Finally, a real study of Jesus and his history!

JESUS NEVER EXISTED: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ULTIMATE HERESY by Kenneth Humphreys (2014, Nine-Banded Books, and no this is not a Holocaust-denying press, 126 pages) is a simple yet stunning study of a subject seemingly too frightening for most of the world to consider. Humphreys, an admirable scholar of Mithraism, makes an excellent case that the Jesus of the Christian religion never existed, nor could he have existed. And a warning up front: this book is not Humphreys' full scholarly tome of the same title. It is unavailable on amazon but you can get it at Humphreys' website. Still, this book is excellent for starters, if you are like me and have only just discovered Humphreys' work. It is a pity he has chosen to take a totally anti-Semitic stance in the course of his work, so I warn you of that as well.

A troll has inspired me to pause here and make a few remarks. What I have read of Humphreys' work satisfies me that he IS a scholar of Mithraism worthy of consideration. What he writes is in agreement with the field, and I say that your publication is what matters, not a degree (which can be purchased but then are also given away for free sometimes), not a following (Charles Manson had a huge following). It is what one publishes that matters. Humphreys has clearly studied the work of the likes of archaeologist Dr. Constantino Politis, a Mithraic expert who specializes in early Christians.
Humphreys' approach is deceptively simple because I have seen that the world cannot grasp its complexity. He argues (and proves) that Christianity is neo-Mithraism, thus rendering a historical Jesus highly improbable. He also has a stunning way of demonstrating the errors of the New Testament, mostly using the New Testament itself. Humphreys uses that very fact to posit that the entire thing is the literary invention of some meddling goofballs.
This serious historical field of study is nothing new. Christianity-as-Mithraism is a neglected historical field all its own. That fact of incompetence is only reinforced by the New Testament authors' lack of knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures. Since I happen to be a part of the post-mid twentieth century scholarly community that worked the field, I can tell you Humphreys is worth reading. He is a scholar as far as I am concerned, and lays out a well-worded argument while acknowledging his intellectual forbears. Sadly, this little book of his is an "interview", with virtually zero references or sources included beyond Humphreys' interview dialogue.
Humphreys is part of the movement that argues there was no such personage as Jesus. (As Bertrand Russell pointed out, if there was a Jesus, we know nothing factual about him.) Here it's Christianity as a Roman-friendly new Mithraic sensibility. Humphreys clings to the absolutist view that the existence of a personage like Jesus is an impossibility--I disagree because Jewish records speak of four individuals (Eleazar ben Hyrcanus, Rabbi ben Stada, "Yeshu" ben Pantera and even the unfortunate Yehoshua ben Abbas, a/k/a Jesus Barabbas) who really existed and were probably added to the instant soup mix that gave us the modern Jesus. With Humphreys the absolutist view that Jesus never existed is a bit overdone, since every other fellow in ancient Judea was named Yehoshua, and every other Yehoshua was a rabbi!
What stuns and hurts me is we Jews never enter into this fray. We could easily refute the pagan Gospels in minutes with solid facts. Instead, we let Humphreys do it and his shortcoming is his unabashed anti-Semitism. Instead of talking and publishing, we Jews wait for Christians to crumble on their own--and then the religion only gets stronger in its deceit. This is a beef I have contra Humphreys: he dismisses the Hebrew bible with an unfortunate, cavalier lack of understanding typical of atheists, when the Hebrew bible serves in many cases as a good historical record. He could have used Old Testament knowledge to easily refute the Gospels and New Testament. Yet I can never begrudge him his tone. He did coin the phrase "mandarins of orthodoxy" which I love. Can I steal it now and again, Humph? If you promise to stop being anti-Semitic, that is.
Truth is truth and I never had a problem with it being expressed spiritually. Humphreys, with his arsenal of facts against the historic validity of the Gospels, gives a refreshing in-depth evaluation of Mithraism's evolution into the Christian religion. Any way you look at it, Humphreys contributes a valuable body of work. As long as you don't mind the angry atheistic screed which Humphreys cannot seem to help. That screed is something I can appreciate, and I do not blame him for it. He is one of those who would be happy if the world were free of religion. Sometimes I feel the same, but I am a Jew, whether I like it or not. Unlike Humphreys, I am not against people because of who they are or even what they believe. I am against wrong actions, which even a child can tell from right actions.
Let me indicate, Humphreys has an excellent website, titled the same as his book. In fact his book project is really secondary to the site, but he has done such a marvelous job with the books. You might just learn everything you need to know about his thesis by visiting his website and that won't cost a penny. Finally there is someone qualified, angry and ready to challenge Christian complacency in their belief of a comic book Mithraic superhero who is nothing more than a skewed retread of the Hercules story. I am not surprised it takes a "crazy" atheist to do the right thing. Look at the lifework of Madeline Murray O'Hair (and her ex-husband Bill Murray, who got Christianity out of the public school system).
Humphrey's major tome on the subject, his 2014 book JESUS NEVER EXISTED: THE TRAGIC FABRICATION OF A SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD (unavailable as yet on amazon) was published by the same press as this book under review. At 533 pages, it neatly covers Humphreys' main arguments, and is updated as compared to the heavy volume of articles on his website. If it wasn't so costly for me at $30, I'd waste no time in buying it. Humphreys published an earlier version of it, but it has evidently gone out of print.
GOOD ADVICE: If you want to know "the rest of the story", viz., where this fictional character called Jesus came from, please read the great Acharya D. M. Murdoch's beautiful scholastic work Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection.

A profound and convincing argument

Although I understand from the first positive review below that the book is based on a conisderably longer book/website with scholarly apparatus this is a short (c100 page) essay summarizing the arguments against the actual existence of an historical Jesus. I found it extremely convincing! It sent me back to the work of Bart Ehrman, whom I understood to be the most recent scholarly defender of an historical Jesus which I then thought was highly UNconvincing. Briefly stated, Humphreys argues that there is no contemporary reference to Jesus, that the place of his supposed birth, Nazareth was not a settled site until long after Jesus' life, that there is no mention in biblical stories of the main historical places in Galilee where Jesus could have preached. There is no record of crucifiction of anyone like Jesus in the records of contemporary Roman/Jewish writings. There is also a description of the four canonical gospels showing how "Mark's" original story is later embroidered by Mathew, Luke and John (that is not new..but note Mark never mentions a virgin birth or return after death) More original is the critique of Paul's letters. Archaeological evidence of Jesus is also lacking. For those readers who are concerned, I do hold a PhD in History and am Emeritus Professor from a major university. This is NOT my field of study, but I believe I am capable of sound evaluations of historical theses. I think that Humphreys occasionally does a disservice to his arguments by snide and sarcastic criticism of Christian history, but that does not invalidate his basic thesis. His work should clearly shift the burden of proof to Christian scholars to provide some solid evidence that there was an historical Jesus. Until that time I would hope that textbook writers stop assuming Jesus existed and treat his story as a myth.

Confused reviewers because merging to two different books.

WARNING: Currently TWO DIFFERENT BOOKS have had the reviews merged. Amazon has merged the reviews/listing from the 2014 title "Jesus Never Existed: An Introduction to the Ultimate Heresy" by Nine-Banded Books and the 2005 title "Jesus Never Existed" published by Historical Review Press. Both books are by Kenneth Humphries, but the first is a 140 page "introduction" and the latter is a 500+ page book.
Reviews here prior to November of 2014 are for previous books, not the Nine-Banded Books title.
I have not read the full 500+ page text, but I have read the 9BB "introduction" and found it to be a quick, approachable and fascinating introduction to the mythicism of Jesus.
