AN AFRICAN REALITY STORY

Monkeys In My Garden had my hair standing on end at times! If I didn't know Val and her husband, O'D, I would have thought the book far-fetched and just a bit too incredible. But I do know them, and their dedication to the forest, the environment, and the people they love and support. I had been horrified over the years to hear of some of their very confronting challenges, from being attacked with machetes and AK47's to the spitting cobra in the engine of their car. Val writes beautifully - whether in an email or in this amazing book. If you have ever been to any part of Africa, it is a 'must read' for Westerners who only look on from the outside!

Monkeys in my Garden is a gripping and absorbing story, told with humour even when the author is describing the often hair-raising and life-threatening events she and her husband O'D lived through.
I especially enjoyed the colourful and larger than life characters that more often than not caused havoc in the author's life.
Characters such as the devious and untrustworthy Chuck; Nora Swete, the woman possessed by the Nippa Demon; Black Kitty and Mr. Ying, Mr.
Chang asnd Mr. Deligong, opera singing Chinese wood buyers. And of course, most important of all, the Pixley's much beloved Mozambican partner, Caetano.
Valerie paints a good picture of what one can expect in Mozambique today.
A well written book, well worth reading."

Fascinating and Brilliant

This was a book that describes Valerie Pixley's life in the back of beyond, in central Mozambique. The book is well written (a pleasure to read), with words that simply flow across the page, and the historic events, which pop up in the story, are factual and accurate.
Her journey is harrowing, filled with danger and unexplained happenings and yet her courage, hope and love shine through the pages. And even amongst the continuous challenges Valerie and her husband (O.D) face, there are sweet moments and laughter.
This book is a must read if you have a love for the wonderful wildlife and natural areas of the planet. It opens ones eyes to the harsh realities of life in a third world country, and the sad reality of how destructive wanton greed and corruption is.
A book well worth reading. I am looking forward to the sequel.
