The EmporiumCalifornias Largest, Americas Grandest Storewas a major shopping destination on San Franciscos Market Street for a century, from 1896 to 1996. Shoppers flocked to the mid-price store with its beautiful dome and bandstand. Patrons could find anything at the Emporium, from jewelry to stoves, and it was a meeting place for friends to enjoy tea while listening to the Emporium Orchestra. Founded as the Emporium and Golden Rule Bazaar, the store flourished until the disastrous 1906 earthquake. Once it reopened in 1908, it dominated shopping downtown until mid-century. Many San Franciscans remember with great nostalgia the Christmas Carnival on the roof, complete with slides, a skating rink, and a train. Santa always arrived in grand style with a big parade down Market Street. After World War II, the Emporium, which had merged with H.C. Capwell & Co. in the late 1920s, began its push and opened branch stores throughout the San Francisco Bay area. However, as competition increased, the companys financial situation worsened, and the Emporium name was no more in 1996.

Author and freelance writer Anne Evers Hitz, a descendant of one of the Emporiums founders, has gathered together images from libraries and private collections to tell the Emporium story.

Great book for anyone who lived in San Francisco between 1896 and 1995

The author tells the story of San Francisco's classic department store from its 19th century beginnings, through decades of popularity and suburban expansion, to its difficult years and eventual closure. Throughout the book are hundreds of iconic photos, many from private collections, showing various aspects of this retail giant over the course of 100 years: exterior and interior shots, employee images, newspaper advertising and brochures, plus the store's annual rooftop Christmas pageant. It's a highly enjoyable walk down memory lane.

Greetings from Santa and me, when the Big E was one of the great department store chains.

This was a nostalgic look back at the Big E. I was born in the early 50s in Palo Alto, CA, and the author used a picture of me with Santa at the Emporium when I was two, so it was guaranteed I'd like it (just a personal plug here). Very interesting history of the Emporium stores from their beginning until they finally closed their doors. If you grew up in the 50s, particularly the San Francisco Bay Area, the Emporium was the store to go to, especially at Christmas. The one closest to me, near Stanford University, had a window display with squirrel monkeys in it. It was a must-see for my brother and me whenever we went to the Stanford Shopping Center (they didn't call them malls back then, I don't think).
If you are interested in the history of this upper-level department store chain, and/or remember shopping there and wondering what happened to them, this is definitely worth purchasing.

Department Store Collector

As a collector of books on Department Store History, I found this book to be good but not great. The time frame between 1906 to the 1950s is very well covered. After that, the book has very limited information leading up to the 1996 flagship closing. Though there is an abundance of photos, some descriptions don't relate to the photo. I wanted to know more about what made The Emporium so special & unique, especially from people that worked behind the scenes at the store.
