"Memoirs of a Mujahed" is the first book published in English by an academic who fought in the Algerian war of independence. It is an adaptation of the author's best seller, "Akfadou, Un An avec le Colonel Amirouche", published in French in 2009 by Casbah Editions, Algiers. This is the first book written in English by a former revolutionary fighter about Algeria's war for independence from France, his country's colonizer. Unfortunately, it will probably the last one written in English, as very few of the former fighters can write prose in Shakespeare's language.
Hamou tells us about growing up in Algeria under French occupation, citing the dire conditions of the indigenous people like him and his family. A case in point is his watching from a window, at the age of seven, his father being tortured by French soldiers. Such very descriptive scenes magically draw us into the author's world, be it family, village, or school. We then follow Hamou as he attempts, unsuccessfully at first, to join the resistance fighters and waits patiently for the call to arms. When he does, he does it under the leadership of Colonel Amirouche (no family relation to the author), one of Algeria's most famous revolutionary leaders.
In the very last few pages, the author analyses the political development of post-independent Algeria, including the rise of fundamentalism, and he shares its effects on his life with his American wife when they lived there.
Hamou provides detailed descriptions of the fighters' strategy to defeat a NATO power and the unfaltering support of the rural population. His story is fascinating with facts, interwoven with humor, and transpiring with humanity. It reminds us that those who have skin in the game tell the best stories.
Revolutions, colonialism, injustice, and discrimination, all intertwined in a personal journey of a young Berber from the Atlas Mountains, are the main themes in this book.

Amirouche's detailed account helped me better understand the history of Algeria and its people

This first person account of Hamou Amirouche's experience as a freedom fighter in Algeria's war of independence against the French, is an extraordinary combination of profoundly personal experiences and well-researched facts. Amirouche's detailed account helped me better understand the history of Algeria and its people, as well as the evolution of both the struggle for independence from the French and the recent civil war. Though Amirouche's focus is on Algeria and the experience of the Algerian people, the struggle, problems and issues he writes about are relevant in many parts of the world today where "colonialism" is still a defacto reality or where a battle for independence has ultimately resolved into factional power struggles. The Algerian experience of the past 50 years in Amirouche's capable hands, provides us with an excellent case study in the many and complex issues facing North Africa as well as the Middle East today. This is well worth the read!
On a personal side, I have known Amirouche and his wife, Elizabeth, for quite a number of years since they left Algeria and came the United States to seek safety. Though I have heard Amirouche speak many times about having been in the war, and on the socio/political aspects of the rise of muslim fundamentalism and jihad, it was with great interest that I read about his life in Algeria and his personal evolution from the child of a blacksmith living in an isolated, mountainous Berber village to the educated and sophisticated man he is today. As with his march across the mountains and desert to Tunisia, it is an extraordinary journey.
A last note. Though Amirouche received input and assistance from others in the translation and editing of Memoirs of a Mujahed, there are places where either the translation or the sequence of events make certain passages awkward. However, given the depth and complexity of the book and experiences depicted, and facts cited, these are minor considerations.

A scholar's View of The Algerian War of Independence

In 1962 eight years of savage warfare ended with France granting independence to Algeria after 132 of colonial occupation. The battle against foreign domination had been won, but the ethos of the nation remains in flux thwarting the promise of full economic and democratic development.
Hamou Amirouche, in what is likely to be seen as a seminal work, has captured the agony of the Algerian struggle for independence and the betrayal of those who gave, or risked their lives so that their fellow countrymen might become masters of their own destiny. Amirouche's memoir is a metaphor of that struggle and betrayal.
Born in a Kabylia village, the son of a politically active blacksmith father, his psyche was prepared for participation in the revolution at the age of seven when he watched his father beaten and humiliated by French troops and their Moroccan mercenaries.
Amirouche, with just a second grade education became the secretary to Colonel Amirouche( no relation to the author), following him on almost daily treks to avoid capture by the French. Colonel Amirouche is portrayed as a hero who if he had survived the war might have lead the nation in a more positive direction following independence.
Hamou Amirouche, after a monumental trek across much of Algeria went on to receive a high school education in Tunisia and eventually a Phd in America. Readers will find his life a metaphor for Algeria's struggles over the last 50 years. Those who wish to understand the Algerian war of independence and the contemporary nation will find that "Memoir's of a Mujahed" provides a wonderfully readable basis for those understandings.
