For elementary schoolteacher Penny Pound, fitting in has always been a struggle. She’s extremely creative, a little outside the box, and not nearly as curriculum-conscious as her boss would appreciate.
What Penny does have, however, is her pastime as an organist in her Episcopal church. There, she finds solace in the magnificent hymns, escaping from the heartbreaks of everyday life and a home left empty by the absence of her teenage son.
But this story doesn’t start with the joyful melodies of church music. Instead, it begins with the unmistakable call of an emergency siren—as tragedy strikes the home of one of Penny’s students, and an innocent life is lost in a fiery blaze.
It is this siren song that sets in motion a life-changing series of events, as suspicions are exposed and accusations begin to fly about the origins of the deadly inferno. But during this time of great suffering, can the efforts of everyday heroes work to bring peace to a devastated family and their shaken community?
Combining elements of humor, tragedy, romance, and spirituality, the debut novel Siren Song introduces protagonist Penny Pound, who navigates her way through the captivating mysteries that lie within her small town.

Heroes walk among us...
By Kimberly K Murray
For everyone who had "that teacher" - the one who went the extra mile, who helped them believe in themselves, who supported them through a tough time - meet Penny Pound. A richly drawn character, Penny captivated me from the first chapter, but what kept me enthralled throughout the book was the cast of characters around her and a plot that looks unflinchingly into the darkness of human weakness and asks - who will help the innocent? The answer is the same answer it always is, those who serve - firefighters, police officers, teachers, counselors. This is a book that is engaging and entertaining, but more than that, it reminds us that there are heroes among us and that sometimes we have a choice in our daily lives to be that hero.

Book Review: Siren Song—A Penny Pound Mystery by Jo Greenwood
Ms. Greenwood's first mystery is a very engaging novel. The heroine and fledgling detective, Penny Pound, is a divorced mother of an adolescent and a schoolteacher who takes exception to much of what educators believe is the best way to reach and teach children. She is also the church organist, and the daughter of a retired policeman. Penny is naïve enough to be fearless and wears her heart on her sleeve.
As the mystery surrounding a fire at her student's' home gets complicated, Penny's naiveté almost costs her dearly, but–with the help of two of her sympathetic school colleagues and the rector of her church—she prevails.
The Penny Pound character is delightful and fully drawn. The dialogue rings true and, although at the beginning, it seems there is no place for a man or a man's opinion in her life, one comes away with a totally different understanding by the end of the book. And, although Penny's actions sometimes reveal her naiveté to her own peril, she prevails in the end. That is to say, she is flawed as a detective but her instincts and her humanity are sufficient to save the day. I am already awaiting the next Penny Pound mystery so that I can get to know this dedicated teacher, flawed detective, and fearless human being even better. Ms. Greenwood should be proud of this, her first novel; it is a delightful read and a true page-turner.

By Henry
A compelling story, beautifully told.
This is not a novel about super heroes or ingenious sleuths. The leading characters are school teachers, policemen, and firemen. The novel explores how these ordinary people respond to terrible events. The characters are well drawn – flawed yet lovable – and the reader is artfully transported into their world. The plot line is dramatic but realistic. As the characters muddle through to a resolution of the mystery, basic human decency is wonderfully portrayed. Along the way the reader is treated to beautiful language, hilarious quips, and memorable, poignant observations about the best and the worst the humans can do. At the end, one is left wanting to know what happens next to these extraordinary “ordinary” people.
