Though Joe Abbate suffers from agoraphobia, he has no fear of facing and reclaiming his truth. His memoir of coming to the aid of his parents when his father recovers from heart surgery will tug warmly at your heart AND make you laugh at family life at its rawest. Joe bravely remembers the hardest parts of growing up with a father who never could show his love, and then shows us all how he gave, and kept giving, his own love. This book inspired me to look at my own relationship with my father.

Excellent writing, I couldn't put it down

Just got done reading Joe's book God's Only Mistake: Becoming a Man in My Father's Eyes, he has captured his Dad perfectly and his story telling left me feeling a thousand different feelings. Excellent writing, I couldn't put it down!

What a great read. I spent many nights reading

This book can only be five stars. What a great read. I spent many nights reading, trying to keep my eyes open because I didn't want to stop reading. I laughed wholeheartedly at some of Joe's comments about his stay with his dad. I will also say that just as easily I cried over a few. Things are definitely passed on to our children. They will have to go against the grain to correct what they can and other things will silently slip on to our children, unknowingly, for them to deal with. I loved this book. Please read this book. You will be a better human being for gaining the knowledge that Joe Jr acquired at the end of the book, from his STAY with is dad.
