This book is a must for all voyaging families.
By Maurice Robertson
This is a great book and dispels the myth that circumnavigation is a cruise. Even the most well-found vessel and experienced crew must still encounter and overcome unexpected hazards; nautical, political and personal. Anne writes honestly and openly about her thoughts regarding the isolation of pre-teenage children and the periodic need to assess finances and schooling. Although written about a journey that ended nearly 30 years ago, nothing has changed to make it easier. Anne has beautifully captured her changing emotions about the venture and the progression from trepidation to confidence and joy in blue water sailing. Her amusing tales of complications involved with arriving in unknown ports, and staying out of harm's way while there, give a realistic insight into the traps that must be avoided to successfully complete the seemingly simple concept of being blown around the world by the wind.

An adventurous circumnavigation, a must read
By Patricia Berwick
I loved this book for its adventures, honesty, and insights. I had a hard time putting it down. For anyone contemplating circumnavigating it is a must. It shows the joys, pitfalls and sorrows of such an adventure. For those of us who haven't been that adventurous it gives a ringside seat to this family's adventures. I recommend this book to people of all ages who are young at heart and love adventure.

Highly recommended

Long yachting voyages often produce a book (not always published) ranging right across the spectrum from the slogging amateur to the ripping yarn, to the full-blown melodrama.
Anne Millen is no Slocum, Conrad, Melville, Hemingway or Junger (well, not quite yet). But she is an under-stater, and that makes her tale of a four and a half year circumnavigation with hubby and two kids, in a boat they built themselves, a terrific read.
I couldn’t put it down and that’s not just because I’ve known Anne and her family for many years. This is by a woman born and raised on an outback Australian farm, who says she could not even swim when her Kiwi husband decided to fulfil his dream and build the ferro-cement hulled ketch Rehuata. It wasn’t quite finished inside when they departed Auckland.
This Is not the boring diary of a sea voyage (such may have been titled More Than a Thousand Yawns). It scuds along in a fair wind chapter to chapter, port to port spiced up with well-chosen bits of poetry and the odd quotation. This is an intelligent, honest account of the dangers, dramas, laughs, wonders and sheer grit required to survive such a journey. It doesn’t dodge the personal issues either, that inevitably arise among a small group in isolation in a confined space.
I was left wondering why she kept her own name and that of the boat, but changed the names of her spouse and kids. There were photos of them!
Maybe it was for legal safety in case she got something wrong or insulted somebody? Why didn’t she just make it a work of fiction then?
Writing anything for public digestion is such hard work. I grovel at the feet of anyone who can start something then finish it, knowing there is no pot of gold at the end of that rainbow. No pot of anything. So it’s a magnificent feat of Anne’s to not only finish the thing but then find a publisher to back her.
I’m keen to read her next one.
