Jesus Never Existed: An Introduction to the Ultimate Heresy, by Kenneth Humphreys

Even among modern atheists, a fragile consensus holds that Jesus was at least a real person, whose historical presence, though embellished, has been reliably established in the order of disinterested scholarship. Whether he is envisioned as peace-loving rabbinical sage or as a militant prophet of doom, this man called Jesus is widely assumed to have had an important, even a profound, impact on the course of world history.

But in the early years of the 21st century a radical though not particularly new thesis has become increasingly difficult to ignore. This thesis, as it is argued over and disseminated across the Internet and made accessible in a rapidly growing number of books, threatens to displace the regnant historiographical paradigm with a simple but devastating proposition: that Jesus never existed at all!

In the space of this hard-hitting monograph and supplemental interview, dissident scholar Kenneth Humphreys interrogates the biblical and historical evidence to offer this concise and pithy exposition of a fringe idea whose time has come. Not content to merely poke holes in tall tales from antiquity, Humphreys presents a surprisingly straightforward case that Jesus, thought by millions of naive believers to have been God incarnate, or at least the Son of God, was not even a man.

Until now, most scholars of religion have, at least publicly, been content to repeat the safe and conciliatory assurance that a Jesus probably existed. But we may well be approaching a tipping point when those same scholars, confronted with powerful evidence and an inquisitive public, will summon the courage to aver that Jesus probably never existed after all.

Having devoted much of his life to the careful study of ancient history, Humphreys harbors no doubt: Jesus, the non-existent son of a non-existent father, will soon be consigned to a place among his ancestors Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses in the realm of mythology, not history.

Let this be your introduction to the ultimate heresy!

Finally, a real study of Jesus and his history!
By Hui Shen ben Israel
JESUS NEVER EXISTED: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ULTIMATE HERESY by Kenneth Humphreys (2014, Nine-Banded Books, and no this is not a Holocaust-denying press, 126 pages) is a simple yet stunning study of a subject seemingly too frightening for most of the world to consider. Humphreys, an admirable scholar of Mithraism, makes an excellent case that the Jesus of the Christian religion never existed, nor could he have existed. And a warning up front: this book is not Humphreys' full scholarly tome of the same title. It is unavailable on amazon but you can get it at Humphreys' website. Still, this book is excellent for starters, if you are like me and have only just discovered Humphreys' work. It is a pity he has chosen to take a totally anti-Semitic stance in the course of his work, so I warn you of that as well.

HILARIOUS IRONY: I could not resist. As of today, 8 June 2015, this review has 12 out of 13 votes. Know what that means? There's a JUDAS out there somewhere!! :) Told you I couldn't resist!

A troll has inspired me to pause here and make a few remarks. What I have read of Humphreys' work satisfies me that he IS a scholar of Mithraism worthy of consideration. What he writes is in agreement with the field, and I say that your publication is what matters, not a degree (which can be purchased but then are also given away for free sometimes), not a following (Charles Manson had a huge following). It is what one publishes that matters. Humphreys has clearly studied the work of the likes of archaeologist Dr. Constantino Politis, a Mithraic expert who specializes in early Christians.

Humphreys' approach is deceptively simple because I have seen that the world cannot grasp its complexity. He argues (and proves) that Christianity is neo-Mithraism, thus rendering a historical Jesus highly improbable. He also has a stunning way of demonstrating the errors of the New Testament, mostly using the New Testament itself. Humphreys uses that very fact to posit that the entire thing is the literary invention of some meddling goofballs.

This serious historical field of study is nothing new. Christianity-as-Mithraism is a neglected historical field all its own. That fact of incompetence is only reinforced by the New Testament authors' lack of knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures. Since I happen to be a part of the post-mid twentieth century scholarly community that worked the field, I can tell you Humphreys is worth reading. He is a scholar as far as I am concerned, and lays out a well-worded argument while acknowledging his intellectual forbears. Sadly, this little book of his is an "interview", with virtually zero references or sources included beyond Humphreys' interview dialogue.

Humphreys is part of the movement that argues there was no such personage as Jesus. (As Bertrand Russell pointed out, if there was a Jesus, we know nothing factual about him.) Here it's Christianity as a Roman-friendly new Mithraic sensibility. Humphreys clings to the absolutist view that the existence of a personage like Jesus is an impossibility--I disagree because Jewish records speak of four individuals (Eleazar ben Hyrcanus, Rabbi ben Stada, "Yeshu" ben Pantera and even the unfortunate Yehoshua ben Abbas, a/k/a Jesus Barabbas) who really existed and were probably added to the instant soup mix that gave us the modern Jesus. With Humphreys the absolutist view that Jesus never existed is a bit overdone, since every other fellow in ancient Judea was named Yehoshua, and every other Yehoshua was a rabbi!

What stuns and hurts me is we Jews never enter into this fray. We could easily refute the pagan Gospels in minutes with solid facts. Instead, we let Humphreys do it and his shortcoming is his unabashed anti-Semitism. Instead of talking and publishing, we Jews wait for Christians to crumble on their own--and then the religion only gets stronger in its deceit. This is a beef I have contra Humphreys: he dismisses the Hebrew bible with an unfortunate, cavalier lack of understanding typical of atheists, when the Hebrew bible serves in many cases as a good historical record. He could have used Old Testament knowledge to easily refute the Gospels and New Testament. Yet I can never begrudge him his tone. He did coin the phrase "mandarins of orthodoxy" which I love. Can I steal it now and again, Humph? If you promise to stop being anti-Semitic, that is.

Truth is truth and I never had a problem with it being expressed spiritually. Humphreys, with his arsenal of facts against the historic validity of the Gospels, gives a refreshing in-depth evaluation of Mithraism's evolution into the Christian religion. Any way you look at it, Humphreys contributes a valuable body of work. As long as you don't mind the angry atheistic screed which Humphreys cannot seem to help. That screed is something I can appreciate, and I do not blame him for it. He is one of those who would be happy if the world were free of religion. Sometimes I feel the same, but I am a Jew, whether I like it or not. Unlike Humphreys, I am not against people because of who they are or even what they believe. I am against wrong actions, which even a child can tell from right actions.

Let me indicate, Humphreys has an excellent website, titled the same as his book. In fact his book project is really secondary to the site, but he has done such a marvelous job with the books. You might just learn everything you need to know about his thesis by visiting his website and that won't cost a penny. Finally there is someone qualified, angry and ready to challenge Christian complacency in their belief of a comic book Mithraic superhero who is nothing more than a skewed retread of the Hercules story. I am not surprised it takes a "crazy" atheist to do the right thing. Look at the lifework of Madeline Murray O'Hair (and her ex-husband Bill Murray, who got Christianity out of the public school system).

Humphrey's major tome on the subject, his 2014 book JESUS NEVER EXISTED: THE TRAGIC FABRICATION OF A SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD (unavailable as yet on amazon) was published by the same press as this book under review. At 533 pages, it neatly covers Humphreys' main arguments, and is updated as compared to the heavy volume of articles on his website. If it wasn't so costly for me at $30, I'd waste no time in buying it. Humphreys published an earlier version of it, but it has evidently gone out of print.

GOOD ADVICE: If you want to know "the rest of the story", viz., where this fictional character called Jesus came from, please read the great Acharya D. M. Murdoch's beautiful scholastic work Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection.

A profound and convincing argument
By Jaromir Benesch
Although I understand from the first positive review below that the book is based on a conisderably longer book/website with scholarly apparatus this is a short (c100 page) essay summarizing the arguments against the actual existence of an historical Jesus. I found it extremely convincing! It sent me back to the work of Bart Ehrman, whom I understood to be the most recent scholarly defender of an historical Jesus which I then thought was highly UNconvincing. Briefly stated, Humphreys argues that there is no contemporary reference to Jesus, that the place of his supposed birth, Nazareth was not a settled site until long after Jesus' life, that there is no mention in biblical stories of the main historical places in Galilee where Jesus could have preached. There is no record of crucifiction of anyone like Jesus in the records of contemporary Roman/Jewish writings. There is also a description of the four canonical gospels showing how "Mark's" original story is later embroidered by Mathew, Luke and John (that is not new..but note Mark never mentions a virgin birth or return after death) More original is the critique of Paul's letters. Archaeological evidence of Jesus is also lacking. For those readers who are concerned, I do hold a PhD in History and am Emeritus Professor from a major university. This is NOT my field of study, but I believe I am capable of sound evaluations of historical theses. I think that Humphreys occasionally does a disservice to his arguments by snide and sarcastic criticism of Christian history, but that does not invalidate his basic thesis. His work should clearly shift the burden of proof to Christian scholars to provide some solid evidence that there was an historical Jesus. Until that time I would hope that textbook writers stop assuming Jesus existed and treat his story as a myth.

Confused reviewers because merging to two different books.
By Kevin I. Slaughter
UPDATE 01-03-15: It seems Amazon has disentangled the two books!
-------
WARNING: Currently TWO DIFFERENT BOOKS have had the reviews merged. Amazon has merged the reviews/listing from the 2014 title "Jesus Never Existed: An Introduction to the Ultimate Heresy" by Nine-Banded Books and the 2005 title "Jesus Never Existed" published by Historical Review Press. Both books are by Kenneth Humphries, but the first is a 140 page "introduction" and the latter is a 500+ page book.
Reviews here prior to November of 2014 are for previous books, not the Nine-Banded Books title.
I have not read the full 500+ page text, but I have read the 9BB "introduction" and found it to be a quick, approachable and fascinating introduction to the mythicism of Jesus.

Memoirs of a Mujahed: Algeria's Struggle for Freedom, 1945-1962, by Mr. Hamou Amirouche

"Memoirs of a Mujahed" is the first book published in English by an academic who fought in the Algerian war of independence. It is an adaptation of the author's best seller, "Akfadou, Un An avec le Colonel Amirouche", published in French in 2009 by Casbah Editions, Algiers. Although these memoirs target the public at large, academics, students of history and Islamist ideology, of asymmetric, psychological, and guerrilla warfare, as well as political sociologists will find it valuable. When the author was seven years old, he saw his father, a nationalist activist, savagely beaten and incarcerated by French troops. A burning hatred of colonialism and the French, sparked by that appalling incident, ignited his first flickers of political awareness. The book combines a harrowing personal narrative with history, politics, and ethnography. It briefly addresses the turmoil of prewar nationalist activism before relating the tragic though exhilarating war events he lived or witnessed as a guerrilla fighter. Sent by the Revolutionary Provisional Government to the US, one month before the end of the war, he describes with a broken heart Algeria's bittersweet independence accompanied by violence unleashed by the race to take power. Attending Georgetown, Wesleyan and Colorado Universities, he analyses an arduous cultural adjustment and the discovery that the quality of leadership, and not natural wealth, constitutes the decisive factor in a country's greatness. Looking back with dismay at Algeria’s missed opportunities since 1962, the work devotes a portion of the epilogue to a revolution hijacked by non-revolutionaries who led the country into a new Algerian war, prompting the inescapable questions: What went wrong? Has a different episode of violence dawned in Algeria, or did the previous one never end?

citing the dire conditions of the indigenous people like him. A case in point is his watching ...
By Rabah Seffal
This is the first book written in English by a former revolutionary fighter about Algeria's war for independence from France, his country's colonizer. Unfortunately, it will probably the last one written in English, as very few of the former fighters can write prose in Shakespeare's language.

Hamou tells us about growing up in Algeria under French occupation, citing the dire conditions of the indigenous people like him and his family. A case in point is his watching from a window, at the age of seven, his father being tortured by French soldiers. Such very descriptive scenes magically draw us into the author's world, be it family, village, or school. We then follow Hamou as he attempts, unsuccessfully at first, to join the resistance fighters and waits patiently for the call to arms. When he does, he does it under the leadership of Colonel Amirouche (no family relation to the author), one of Algeria's most famous revolutionary leaders.

In the very last few pages, the author analyses the political development of post-independent Algeria, including the rise of fundamentalism, and he shares its effects on his life with his American wife when they lived there.

Hamou provides detailed descriptions of the fighters' strategy to defeat a NATO power and the unfaltering support of the rural population. His story is fascinating with facts, interwoven with humor, and transpiring with humanity. It reminds us that those who have skin in the game tell the best stories.

Revolutions, colonialism, injustice, and discrimination, all intertwined in a personal journey of a young Berber from the Atlas Mountains, are the main themes in this book.

Amirouche's detailed account helped me better understand the history of Algeria and its people
By J H Cox
This first person account of Hamou Amirouche's experience as a freedom fighter in Algeria's war of independence against the French, is an extraordinary combination of profoundly personal experiences and well-researched facts. Amirouche's detailed account helped me better understand the history of Algeria and its people, as well as the evolution of both the struggle for independence from the French and the recent civil war. Though Amirouche's focus is on Algeria and the experience of the Algerian people, the struggle, problems and issues he writes about are relevant in many parts of the world today where "colonialism" is still a defacto reality or where a battle for independence has ultimately resolved into factional power struggles. The Algerian experience of the past 50 years in Amirouche's capable hands, provides us with an excellent case study in the many and complex issues facing North Africa as well as the Middle East today. This is well worth the read!

On a personal side, I have known Amirouche and his wife, Elizabeth, for quite a number of years since they left Algeria and came the United States to seek safety. Though I have heard Amirouche speak many times about having been in the war, and on the socio/political aspects of the rise of muslim fundamentalism and jihad, it was with great interest that I read about his life in Algeria and his personal evolution from the child of a blacksmith living in an isolated, mountainous Berber village to the educated and sophisticated man he is today. As with his march across the mountains and desert to Tunisia, it is an extraordinary journey.

A last note. Though Amirouche received input and assistance from others in the translation and editing of Memoirs of a Mujahed, there are places where either the translation or the sequence of events make certain passages awkward. However, given the depth and complexity of the book and experiences depicted, and facts cited, these are minor considerations.

A scholar's View of The Algerian War of Independence
By barbarakapner
In 1962 eight years of savage warfare ended with France granting independence to Algeria after 132 of colonial occupation. The battle against foreign domination had been won, but the ethos of the nation remains in flux thwarting the promise of full economic and democratic development.
Hamou Amirouche, in what is likely to be seen as a seminal work, has captured the agony of the Algerian struggle for independence and the betrayal of those who gave, or risked their lives so that their fellow countrymen might become masters of their own destiny. Amirouche's memoir is a metaphor of that struggle and betrayal.
Born in a Kabylia village, the son of a politically active blacksmith father, his psyche was prepared for participation in the revolution at the age of seven when he watched his father beaten and humiliated by French troops and their Moroccan mercenaries.
Amirouche, with just a second grade education became the secretary to Colonel Amirouche( no relation to the author), following him on almost daily treks to avoid capture by the French. Colonel Amirouche is portrayed as a hero who if he had survived the war might have lead the nation in a more positive direction following independence.
Hamou Amirouche, after a monumental trek across much of Algeria went on to receive a high school education in Tunisia and eventually a Phd in America. Readers will find his life a metaphor for Algeria's struggles over the last 50 years. Those who wish to understand the Algerian war of independence and the contemporary nation will find that "Memoir's of a Mujahed" provides a wonderfully readable basis for those understandings.

The EmporiumCalifornias Largest, Americas Grandest Storewas a major shopping destination on San Franciscos Market Street for a century, from 1896 to 1996. Shoppers flocked to the mid-price store with its beautiful dome and bandstand. Patrons could find anything at the Emporium, from jewelry to stoves, and it was a meeting place for friends to enjoy tea while listening to the Emporium Orchestra. Founded as the Emporium and Golden Rule Bazaar, the store flourished until the disastrous 1906 earthquake. Once it reopened in 1908, it dominated shopping downtown until mid-century. Many San Franciscans remember with great nostalgia the Christmas Carnival on the roof, complete with slides, a skating rink, and a train. Santa always arrived in grand style with a big parade down Market Street. After World War II, the Emporium, which had merged with H.C. Capwell & Co. in the late 1920s, began its push and opened branch stores throughout the San Francisco Bay area. However, as competition increased, the companys financial situation worsened, and the Emporium name was no more in 1996.

Great book for anyone who lived in San Francisco between 1896 and 1995
By Frank Dunnigan
The author tells the story of San Francisco's classic department store from its 19th century beginnings, through decades of popularity and suburban expansion, to its difficult years and eventual closure. Throughout the book are hundreds of iconic photos, many from private collections, showing various aspects of this retail giant over the course of 100 years: exterior and interior shots, employee images, newspaper advertising and brochures, plus the store's annual rooftop Christmas pageant. It's a highly enjoyable walk down memory lane.

Greetings from Santa and me, when the Big E was one of the great department store chains.
By Anthony B. Ford
This was a nostalgic look back at the Big E. I was born in the early 50s in Palo Alto, CA, and the author used a picture of me with Santa at the Emporium when I was two, so it was guaranteed I'd like it (just a personal plug here). Very interesting history of the Emporium stores from their beginning until they finally closed their doors. If you grew up in the 50s, particularly the San Francisco Bay Area, the Emporium was the store to go to, especially at Christmas. The one closest to me, near Stanford University, had a window display with squirrel monkeys in it. It was a must-see for my brother and me whenever we went to the Stanford Shopping Center (they didn't call them malls back then, I don't think).

If you are interested in the history of this upper-level department store chain, and/or remember shopping there and wondering what happened to them, this is definitely worth purchasing.

Department Store Collector
By Andrew
As a collector of books on Department Store History, I found this book to be good but not great. The time frame between 1906 to the 1950s is very well covered. After that, the book has very limited information leading up to the 1996 flagship closing. Though there is an abundance of photos, some descriptions don't relate to the photo. I wanted to know more about what made The Emporium so special & unique, especially from people that worked behind the scenes at the store.

Prescription: Murder! Volume 3: Authentic Cases From the Files of Alan Hynd, by Alan Hynd

The final volume of the Prescription: Murder! series.

From the files and pen of world renowned true crime writer Alan Hynd (1903 - 1974) comes the final installment of deliciously dark true murder cases of the first half of the 20th Century. These stories, the third of these three short collections, are unified by a single theme: they all involve physicians. And not for the autopsy, but as perpetrators or accused perpetrators. You may never see your family care giver again in the same light.

Told in the characteristic wry, anecdotal reportorial style that made Alan Hynd famous in his day (two wartime best sellers in 1943, contributions to The Reader's Digest, Colliers, Coronet, The Saturday Evening Post, True, Liberty, The American Mercury and almost every true detective magazine in print) these tales will have you cringing one minute, laughing the next, and gasping in shock a moment later. Truly, no one could make up classics like these.

We meet here the notorious Dr. Cream, a twitchy-eyed psychotic with a yen for prostitutes, a Philadelphia chiropractor whose girlfriend lost her head, and Marcel Petiot, whose patients payed their own way out of this world. Then as a bonus, get to know (from a safe distance) "Lethal Louise," the black widow of California, and Adolf Luetgert of Chicago, whose sausage-making plant was put to extracurricular uses.

This is not for the faint of heart.

True crime is always farther out there than fiction.

More Mayhem

This third in the series was especially murderous. Thinking that the past was more mundane compared to today is wrong. There were sick people long ago.

Murder with a sense of humor
By Purple Passion
The last installment in the Prescription: Murder series by Alan Hynd. Mr. Hynd's witty sense of humor are the highlights of this series making it seem as if he's sitting in the room telling you the story. Although the subject matter is truly gruesome, it was an enjoyable read.

True crime from the past
By B. Mckee
I think I enjoyed this book slightly less than the first two volumes. Perhaps that was because I already knew about a couple of the stories.

These crime stories are well-written and very comfortable to read. The facts are presented with no window dressing. I did count 14 errors; one photo was captioned as Dr. Belshaw when Belshaw was the detective.

I will look for other books by this author because I like his writing style in reporting crime stories.

This is a real page turner!
By Ria Voss
His Perfect Legacy kept me guessing till the very end! Detective Latimer has his hands full trying to solve the mysteries of the deaths in this rich, spoiled, self seeking family! The characters in this mystery were so dysfunctional and they had me on the edge of my seat as I read. I loved all 3 of the books and I hate to see this trilogy come to an end!

Another great read
By CoraLee
I enjoyed the third of the trilogy as much as the first two. She does a great job with the story and keeping my interest.
I enjoy not having graphic killings, sex, and foul language.
The only negative I would say is there are quite a few editing errors. More attention should be paid to that part, but the writing and mystery is great.

Very intriguing murder mystery - couldn't put it down
By Ann Mackie
I read all 3 books in this trilogy and I couldn't put them down. Barbara has a way of writing so you really can't figure out who the perpetrator is and you're kept guessing all the way to the end. The plot is intriguing with twists and turns and the characters are very interesting. I'm sad that this is the last book.

Eastward to Tartary, Robert Kaplan's first book to focus on a single region since his bestselling Balkan Ghosts, introduces readers to an explosive and little-known part of the world destined to become a tinderbox of the future.

Kaplan takes us on a spellbinding journey into the heart of a volatile region, stretching from Hungary and Romania to the far shores of the oil-rich Caspian Sea. Through dramatic stories of unforgettable characters, Kaplan illuminates the tragic history of this unstable area that he describes as the new fault line between East and West. He ventures from Turkey, Syria, and Israel to the turbulent countries of the Caucasus, from the newly rich city of Baku to the deserts of Turkmenistan and the killing fields of Armenia. The result is must reading for anyone concerned about the state of our world in the decades to come.

Travels around ideological geography
By J. Michael Cole
This latest effort by renown travel journalist Robert D. Kaplan is, as should be expected from him, a timely, incisive and at times alarming look at the "ideological geography" which is bound to create conflict and instability-the likes of which we have seen in the Balkans-in years to come. This is a book that dares to go to places where the electronic media has very little (if any) interest in. Besides presenting us with places we'd heard very little about, Mr. Kaplan clearly shows us how the old imperialistic foundations, like plate tectonics, are sometimes coming back to haunt the region (this is something he'd pointed in The Ends of the Earth). The fear of Russian "hegemony" is palpable, and oftentimes the urge for Western capitalism enters in conflict with age-old ideologies which are still very present today.
The book also leads us to understand that the "democracy at all cost" approach, so much vaunted by the West, is more often than not the wrong way of assisting countries which for decades found themselves under the unforgiving rule of totalitarianism, with no democratic foundations to start with. Failure to grasp this reality leads to a widening gap between the population and the few cronies who, opportunistic as they are, were able to seize the various help packages that were injected (blindly) into the region after the fall of communism (and other forms of totalitarianism, such as the Ottoman Empire). What, Kaplan asks, is the solution, then? Jordan, he argues, is a good place to start. But again, one country, however stable, cannot dissociate itself from regional currents; and in the Middle East, as in the other places Kaplan visits in this book, instability, fueled by the striated periods of history-Assyrian, Byzantine, Ottoman, etc-is an ever-present danger. One political earthquake (in an earthquake-prone region) could lead to a "domino-like" chain reaction which, it is almost certain, would affect several countries. One could argue that this is where the "real" historical "civilizations," to use Samuel Huntington's theme,-age-old "alliances,"-would reemerge. The places are also filled with many unknowns (and probably unknown unknowns as well). In the Caucasus, the fall of communism created a void which sucks in whatever ideology is fit to fill that void. Which one(s) will? One can feel the nostalgia for the days under Stalin. A very preoccupying symptom. In the Middle East, what will happen after Saddam Hussein either dies or is thrown out, or Syria loses its "avuncular" grip on Lebanon? These, and many others, are some questions you will encounter in this book.
Eastward to Taratry tackles the age-old questions, much debated by historians, scientists and pundits, of religion versus history, and nationalism versus globalism. In a region which has yet to find firm ground to stand on, where few people are extremely rich and most live in poverty, the questions of "market economy" and Western principles of equality and democracy are very far from most people's minds. Thanks to years of repression, geographical distance, scant media attention and misappropriated help from the West and the EU, what matters, for the moment, is putting food on the table, and whoever provides these very basic needs-whether he be a Stalin or a Shevardnadze-will be welcomed open-armed by the population. Let's not kid ourselves: we'd do likewise. Of course there is a marked hankering for a sense of belonging to the West; countries like Romania, which find themselves straddling the ideological faultline between East and West, would give anything to join the ranks of NATO and the European Community, and this is very telling. This line, between East and West, is very real (whether it should even exist is another question), and one must ask whether it ought to be the responsibility of the West (i.e., NATO, the EC) to choose which countries (Hungary? Romania? Bulgaria?) will join the ranks of Western countries and who will be left "behind" in the East. These power politics belong to the elite, the educated, the leaders. What about the people in the streets, who can barely eke out a living but who will suffer the consequences of such political decisions, Kaplan asks?
A great book, well-written, which answers a few questions but asks many more. This is a guide to a region which could feasibly make the news in the future, and unless we start investing politically and intellectually in it immediately, this is a region which most assuredly will cause NATO, the UN and pretty much the rest of the world many a headache. Perhaps this is our best chance to test the principles of preventive diplomacy; the conflicts aren't here yet (at least, not in the real sense of the word), but the sings are. The seismographic needles are quaking a little... The signs are here. Can we avoid a major earthquake? Maybe. A better understanding of the region, which is what this book offers, is a good start.

Willing and able to tell it like it is!
By L. Feld
In "Eastward to Tartary," Robert Kaplan, author of the classic "Balkan Ghosts" and several other excellent books, doesn't sugarcoat things, that's for sure, as he explores the "New Near East" (the corpses of two major empires -- the Ottoman and the Soviet) and writes back to inform us how the rotting is going. Personally, I think we should all be thankful to Kaplan for traveling to some of these hellholes and reporting back to us so, if for nothing else, so WE don't have to go there ourselves (just kidding)! We are also lucky that Kaplan, with his keen eye, tenacity, persistence, courage, and fine journalistic skills, is there to give us the uncomfortable truths that most of us would prefer to ignore or gloss over. As Kaplan modestly puts it, his goal is to "discover the obvious" - obvious, though, only if you are willing (and skillful enough) to really look for it, and most Western journalists aren't willing or able. Luckily for us, Kaplan is both!
"Eastward to Tartary" is bracing, as have been all of Kaplan's books, and not for the weak of stomach! Whether or not you like what he has to say, you have to admit that Kaplan has vast knowledge and wisdom and cuts right to the chase - no bull. Reading Kaplan, I kept thinking: this guy is the anti-Friedman! No cloying cuteness, no wonders of globalization for Kaplan, and no rhapsodizing over the wonders of shopping malls and McDonalds either. Thank goodness! Instead, Kaplan writes clearly, brutally honestly, without sentimentality, glibness, or cuteness. Kaplan is NOT an optimist, and I mean this as a compliment. Instead, Kaplan is a clear-eyed realist, and, as Michael Ignatieff calls him, a "travel writer from hell" (that's a compliment, too, by the way!) Many Americans, steeped in naïve, mushy, rose-colored, and even dangerous optimism, would probably call him a pessimist by way of dismissing him because they don't WANT to believe what he has to say. But just because Kaplan is a disturbing messenger, that doesn't mean that we should shoot him (metaphorically speaking, of course)! As Kaplan himself puts it, "a viewpoint is not necessarily inaccurate because it happens to be morally risky or pessimistic, especially if it helps explain phenomena that are otherwise unexplainable."
Kaplan's stress on the salience of history is a jarring contrast with mainstream American thought, which tends strongly towards the "history is bunk" school. Kaplan also disillusions us of the mushy notion that if only everyone could be globalized, then everyone would be peaceful liberal democrats and we'd be at the "end of history". NOT!
Kaplan is successful in part because of HOW he travels - slowly, by land or sea, mainly. As he puts it, "the essence of travel was to slow the passage of time. One could fly...but "flying from place to place encourages abstractions, whereas land travel brings one face-to-face with basic, sometimes unpleasant truths. I preferred to travel by second-class car and stay in cheap hotels...[because] it allowed me to go on learning."
So what does Kaplan learn? That "national character" matters. That "absurd personality cults" are alive and well in many of these places. That "the idea that the Internet and other technologies annihilates distances is a half-truth." That communism/ authoritarianism are not NECESSARILY all bad (at least they provided pensions, schooling, and social peace), and that liberal democracy/capitalism/free markets are not NECESSARILY all good or an end in and of themselves (especially if it's the local thugs and Mafiosi who benefit). That nothing is "determined in advance," but that leadership, history and geography (the "olive trees" in Friedman's formulation) DO matter. That the West probably could "never muster" the "sheer appetite for power" necessary to remake this part of the world. That "morality is a funny thing," and that sometimes the former "idealistic dissident" can end up destroying his country, while the ex-communist hack or secret policeman can end up saving it. That irredentism (Azeri, Turkmen, etc.) is alive and well at the start of the 21st century. That it may be only "the impermanence of bad governments" that gives one any hope at all for many of these places. That, in many of the places that he visits, Western influence extends for only a few blocks in the capital city, while the countryside is ruled by gangs and thugs, with only the faintest sign of the West. That there are plenty of rootless, unemployed, disoriented young men out there just ripe for the picking of terrorist groups, religious fanatics, mafias, and nationalistic armies. And that ecological and cultural devastation are long-lasting consequences of the collapse the Soviet Union.
So what does Kaplan recommend that we DO about this screwed-up part of the world? It's hard to tell...maybe he doesn't really know. Or, maybe, Kaplan is a specialist - he calls `em like he sees `em, but leaves it to other specialists to figure out what to do with `em! Anyway, MY recommendation is that you read this book, if you want to understand the world we live in today, and, most likely, it's future...

The Master of Political and Historical Insights
By doomsdayer520
I have read several of Kaplan's books and he continues his winning streak in this one. Unlike many travel writers who merely offer westernized descriptions of people and scenery in places that are already well known, Kaplan covers areas that most of us in the western world are unfamiliar with. Interesting places in this book include Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan. He also focuses on history and politics, and has remarkable insights into the possible futures of the regions he visits, and how the past influences the present and future to a much greater extent than in the West. Some key insights offered by Kaplan here include the notion that Europe is currently splitting into regions that are eerily similar to the Ottoman and Holy Roman empires of ancient times, with the collapse of communism and the weakening of NATO. Kaplan also predicts that the next Yugoslavia-style bloodbath, which will drag in the rest of the world, will occur in the Caucasus region (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan). Tellingly, Chechnya is not too far away. Kaplan knows what he's talking about, as he predicted the Yugoslavia disaster back in the late 1980's. And throughout the book Kaplan proves that the collapse of communism and the rise of so-called democracy is only a good thing at a high level of international politics. But for millions and millions of regular people, life has become far more dangerous and miserable.
Since the portion of this book covering Romania and Bulgaria is meant as a sequel to Kaplan's earlier "Balkan Ghosts," and since some of the other areas covered are also featured in "The Ends of the Earth," this book is slightly weaker than those two masterpieces. Kaplan also occasionally stumbles into cultural arrogance when dealing with non-Western people and politics. However, these are slight weaknesses in a very strong book that offers highly enlightening insights into the history and peoples in areas that Americans should stop ignoring.

Rich, Short, and Essential
By Rocky Raccoon
Tackling the subject of loving God, (St.) Bernard of Clairvoux, 'On Loving God' reaches such depths comparable to (St.) Teresa of Avila's Interior Castle (Dover Thrift Editions) in a shorter space and time. Ecumenical, the book has a wide Christian appeal, for his proofs are mainly from scripture, and the thrust is as accessible to most readers as Thomas Kempis's classic, The Imitation of Christ (Paraclete Essentials). In this book, he progresses persuasively to each level of potential growth we have to love God Himself.

He explains the problems that keep us away from our progress with our love of God, and he elaborates thoroughly the differences between the spirit and the flesh, using several psalms, Paul's letters, and other biblical books from Genesis to Job.

Resourceful, rich, and rewarding, 'On Loving God' can be completed in a few sittings, but also be enough to pause and reflect upon for many additional hours to come.

Written by a holy monk - a few hundred years ago

I believe St. Bernard was a very holy monk and can teach through his writings
how to find and learn to love God most fervently.

Love of God
By Ted Bergin
St Bernard talks of four levels of Loving God, with the fourth & highest level related to loving self not at all, save to please God. But best fruit is the insight that the Song of Solomon relates to the love of a soul for God. It is a celestial love story, rather than a corporeal romance between two young lovers. I must confess to having thought the Song of Solomon related to this world. St Bernard casts new light on God's love and how a Christian should return that love.
