Was A Realm Of Sexual Depravity Where Murder Was The Last Sin.

Stunned, the police immediately suspected Susan Fassett's husband and surrounded his home. They couldn't have been more wrong. Susan Fassett had been living a secret life, entangled in a passionate web of dominance, lesbian sex, betrayal--and a depraved plan for murder. After detectives untangled a web of secrets and corruption hidden in plain sight, the town of Pleasant Valley would be rocked again when a shocking trial exposed the whole sordid truth. . .

Exactly what I'm looking for in a true crime story
By Laura James
I am really, really surprised by the bad reviews of this book. As a lawyer & very heavy reader of true crime, I am as picky as they come. I read about 100+ books a year. I only write reviews of the best books. I thought this book was very nicely written.

So I received a gigantic pile of brand-new true crime paperbacks for my birthday and cheerily dug in to what I thought would be weeks of good reading. Unfortunately, I got through all of them in less than a week. Almost every book was poorly done. And even that's being generous.

When I read a true crime book, I want to know three things: why, why, and why. Why did the victim make the choices s/he did? Why did the killer do what s/he did? Why did this person end up dead? Some details cast light on these questions. Alas, some authors can compose 300-page books packed with details that don't even come close to answering the fundamental query.

Most writers in the pile bored me to skimming with the wrong details. Who cares to know which brand of camera was used to take the autopsy photos? Apparently some authors think this is such an important point that they dwell on it. Why is it necessary to write two hundred pages about the trial? That's not the story. Who cares where the judge went to law school? What time the trial began? The occupations of each juror? I really don't think any true crime fans want a long, drawn-out account of a trial. (And this is coming from a trial lawyer!)

But there was one book that did not disappoint. Suspenseful, insightful, considered, and aimed at answering the great why, the best book of the bunch, by far, was Deadly Secrets by M. William Phelps. I would call it a fatal love triangle, except I don't think that there was any love involved. The story of a manipulative psychopath, Fred Andros, and the women he destroyed is also a good cure for gullibility (not to mention the seven-year itch).

The next time my DH wants to surprise me with my favorite reading material, I think I'll nudge him with a list of authors - with this one at the top.

disappointed
By maryrose
This book is a great disappointment. I have all of M.William Phelps previous true crime books and really enjoyed them. This one, Deadly Secrets, has no in-depth (because there's nothing to dig into), no suspense, and no interesting story. The whole thing is revealed right at the start and you might as well finish reading at that point because nothing new comes out! Sorry, but I think this one was a rush job just to publish something. It won't stop me looking at his next project, but I won't be recommending this one. Especially considering how much I paid to get it shipped here!

A Cop's Wife! A Crooked Public Official! and the shooter!
By Sylviastel
Dawn Silverheels, Susan Fassett, and Freddy Andros are involved in this complicated scenario of one guy's fantasy. The story is not fiction but true fact. Dawn, the shooter, is intimidated by Freddy Andros to shoot and kill Susan, Freddy's sometimes long-time lover, and unwilling aide in his many corruptive crimes. Susan and Dawn had even lesbian sex with each other to please Freddy despite the women's obvious discomfort in the acts. Freddy was a control freak who used people like Dawn and Susan to commit acts. Susan was scheduled to testify when she was gunned outside a church in upstate New York after choir practice. Freddy being a coward gets Dawn to do his deed and blackmails her with threatening harm to her only son. Susan who was longtime married to a cop in Poughkeepsie had reconciled their relationship and ended her affair with Freddy. But you can't say no to Freddy.

I was quite disappointed by Phelps' latest offering in the true crime genre. He doesn't give as much detail as he normally does in his books. I don't even know if the victim was cremated or interred in a cemetery. I don't even recall reading about her funeral services or maybe I passed over them by mistake. Usually Phelps is a better writer but not this one. He even had access to Dawn which is surprising.
