ALONE IN A COUNTRY AT WAR: As the young wife of a USAF pilot, the author is not authorized to accompany her husband when he receives orders for Vietnam. She decides to go anyway, on her own, and ends up in the country before her husband. Join her, as she arrives alone, the day after a coup, and in the middle of a cholera epidemic. Accompany her through her fears, challenges, and joys. You will be at her side as she taps into a hidden western culture that seems to flow as an undercurrent beneath the noise and clamor of an over-populated city. You also will witness her interaction with the Vietnamese people, and learn how she developed such a great affection for them and their country.

Outstanding. A must read.

I have to agree with another reviewer, that " A Year In Vietnam 1964" was a page turner. Many remember the prior year having lost President Kennedy. Collage campuses here at home were in turmoil. I don't know of many people that would voluntarily enter a war zone, but the author Doris Gracy, knocks this one out of the park.
She decided to travel to Saigon with her husband Frank who was an Air Force pilot and just the thought of living in an active war zone, in a foreign land, had to be unnerving. While the learning curve may have been steep, the author weaves a story of daily life and it became apparent early on that there was to be a bond created with the wonderful people of Vietnam and those people that the author eventually began to work with as Ms. Gracy was a microbiologist who had volunteered to work at the laboratory at Cho Ray Hospital.
Many have tried to write about their travels off the beaten path in distant lands, but none of the books that I have read on life in Vietnam during this period even come close to the first hand experience of actually living in country and it is to the authors credit that having had this first hand experience makes all the difference in bringing this tumultuous time into clear focus along with the many stories and pictures of this bygone era.
For those who have an interest in journeying back in time to one of the most protracted wars of the 20th century, Ms. Gracy will take the reader into the heart and soul of a country as well as its people and this story should be a must read for anyone interested in learning about Vietnam in the 1960's through first hand experience.

Open your mind and heart

Step back into the turbulent 60's as you envision a determined protagonist (Doris Gracy) entering the culture of Saigon in 1964. The Vietnam war is raging but her determination to embrace the culture and it's warm people while observing the truth all around her. This story is riveting from the first page. The writer's first hand account of a time when she absorbed the culture around her and reported what she truly saw back home to her United States Senator. Her letter about her observations in Vietnam were read aloud and recorded on the Congressional record. Take the journey with her and open your heart and mind to the world as she encountered it. This is a real page turner and a must read.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in Asia, that land shrouded in mystery and romanticized in adventure novels? Well, Doris Gracy can tell you -- and she does so in her book, "A Year in Vietnam."
Doris went to Vietnam to be with her Husband, Frank Gracy, a U.S. Air Force pilot deployed to Vietnam in 1964. Doris resided in an apartment in Saigon at her own expense. She shared her apartment with Frank when he was not flying missions or restricted to Bien Hoa Air Base, his base of operations.
Doris didn't merely live in Vietnam; she was an active participant in life as it was lived in Saigon. She merged wholeheartedly with the population and forged many new friendships. Being an experienced microbiologist, she even volunteered to work in the laboratory at Cho Ray Hospital. (Fortunately the head of the laboratory had studied in Canada and spoke English.) How better to immerse herself in Vietnamese life?
Doris' also developed friendships with other American families that were living in "Nam." Some of those friendships have endured to the present. In fact, the young children who were in those families have now, as adults, formed a group called "Saigon Kids" with plans to revisit Nam. Evidently, they feel that their Nam experience was sufficiently interesting and rewarding to warrant a return to some of their old haunts.
Doris' interests weren't limited to Vietnamese life and culture while she was in Nam. She couldn't ignore the war being fought there. Doris was disturbed by the way the U. S. was fighting the war in Vietnam. She noted inconsistencies and unnecessary duplication. This prompted her to write a letter to her Senator in which she clearly expressed her concerns. Her Senator thought enough of her assessment to read her letter on the floor of the Senate and have it recorded.
Her book has special meaning for me because I was in Vietnam four years after she left. I was there for four months as a civilian employee of the U. S. Air Force on assignment to Saigon. Our paths eventually crossed years later in Hawaii. We became friends and I had the privilege to read her book when it was initially self-published prior to appearing on Amazon.
Doris' book brought up many memories of my own adventures in Vietnam. It turns out that Doris and I had many of the same experiences, visited many of the same places, and developed the same affinity and affection for the Vietnamese people. Today, I am gratified to see a Vietnamese actress on TV, meet a Vietnamese hair stylist in the salon where I have my hair cut, and wear shirts bearing the label "Made in Vietnam."
Doris is an accomplished writer. Her book vividly brings her experiences to life. It is not written in the stilted, uninspired style of a travel brochure. With Doris doing the writing, you feel as if you are there with her! So, if new experiences appeal to you and you are intrigued by an opportunity to peek behind the cultural curtains that shield a guarded society, then "A Year in Vietnam" will delight you.
