Outstanding. A must read.

I have to agree with another reviewer, that " A Year In Vietnam 1964" was a page turner. Many remember the prior year having lost President Kennedy. Collage campuses here at home were in turmoil. I don't know of many people that would voluntarily enter a war zone, but the author Doris Gracy, knocks this one out of the park.
She decided to travel to Saigon with her husband Frank who was an Air Force pilot and just the thought of living in an active war zone, in a foreign land, had to be unnerving. While the learning curve may have been steep, the author weaves a story of daily life and it became apparent early on that there was to be a bond created with the wonderful people of Vietnam and those people that the author eventually began to work with as Ms. Gracy was a microbiologist who had volunteered to work at the laboratory at Cho Ray Hospital.
Many have tried to write about their travels off the beaten path in distant lands, but none of the books that I have read on life in Vietnam during this period even come close to the first hand experience of actually living in country and it is to the authors credit that having had this first hand experience makes all the difference in bringing this tumultuous time into clear focus along with the many stories and pictures of this bygone era.
For those who have an interest in journeying back in time to one of the most protracted wars of the 20th century, Ms. Gracy will take the reader into the heart and soul of a country as well as its people and this story should be a must read for anyone interested in learning about Vietnam in the 1960's through first hand experience.

Open your mind and heart

Step back into the turbulent 60's as you envision a determined protagonist (Doris Gracy) entering the culture of Saigon in 1964. The Vietnam war is raging but her determination to embrace the culture and it's warm people while observing the truth all around her. This story is riveting from the first page. The writer's first hand account of a time when she absorbed the culture around her and reported what she truly saw back home to her United States Senator. Her letter about her observations in Vietnam were read aloud and recorded on the Congressional record. Take the journey with her and open your heart and mind to the world as she encountered it. This is a real page turner and a must read.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in Asia, that land shrouded in mystery and romanticized in adventure novels? Well, Doris Gracy can tell you -- and she does so in her book, "A Year in Vietnam."

Doris went to Vietnam to be with her Husband, Frank Gracy, a U.S. Air Force pilot deployed to Vietnam in 1964. Doris resided in an apartment in Saigon at her own expense. She shared her apartment with Frank when he was not flying missions or restricted to Bien Hoa Air Base, his base of operations.

Doris didn't merely live in Vietnam; she was an active participant in life as it was lived in Saigon. She merged wholeheartedly with the population and forged many new friendships. Being an experienced microbiologist, she even volunteered to work in the laboratory at Cho Ray Hospital. (Fortunately the head of the laboratory had studied in Canada and spoke English.) How better to immerse herself in Vietnamese life?

Doris' also developed friendships with other American families that were living in "Nam." Some of those friendships have endured to the present. In fact, the young children who were in those families have now, as adults, formed a group called "Saigon Kids" with plans to revisit Nam. Evidently, they feel that their Nam experience was sufficiently interesting and rewarding to warrant a return to some of their old haunts.

Doris' interests weren't limited to Vietnamese life and culture while she was in Nam. She couldn't ignore the war being fought there. Doris was disturbed by the way the U. S. was fighting the war in Vietnam. She noted inconsistencies and unnecessary duplication. This prompted her to write a letter to her Senator in which she clearly expressed her concerns. Her Senator thought enough of her assessment to read her letter on the floor of the Senate and have it recorded.

Her book has special meaning for me because I was in Vietnam four years after she left. I was there for four months as a civilian employee of the U. S. Air Force on assignment to Saigon. Our paths eventually crossed years later in Hawaii. We became friends and I had the privilege to read her book when it was initially self-published prior to appearing on Amazon.

Doris' book brought up many memories of my own adventures in Vietnam. It turns out that Doris and I had many of the same experiences, visited many of the same places, and developed the same affinity and affection for the Vietnamese people. Today, I am gratified to see a Vietnamese actress on TV, meet a Vietnamese hair stylist in the salon where I have my hair cut, and wear shirts bearing the label "Made in Vietnam."

Doris is an accomplished writer. Her book vividly brings her experiences to life. It is not written in the stilted, uninspired style of a travel brochure. With Doris doing the writing, you feel as if you are there with her! So, if new experiences appeal to you and you are intrigued by an opportunity to peek behind the cultural curtains that shield a guarded society, then "A Year in Vietnam" will delight you.

About the Author
Juana speaks to women's groups and churches with her story and seminar on order, home life, and time management for busy Christian mothers. Formerly a National Account Manager with Xerox Corporation, she left the work force to be a stay-at-home mom and homeschooled her children. Juana's experience in both business and homeschooling gives her an excellent background to understand and help other busy moms. Juana, her husband, Terry, and their four children live in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Common Sense Advice For Struggling Couples

** I was provided a free copy of this book from Ambassador International in return for an honest review.**

Christian homemaker, homeschool teacher and motivational speaker Juana Mikels shares her story of a time early on in her marriage when she was feeling disillusioned with the man she chose, feeling that maybe she chose hastily. Triggered by meeting attractive, charismatic men at a work conference who only seem to make her husband back at home look that much more bland and unappealing, she decides to leave her marriage, thinking that perhaps by separating from her husband and starting over, she'll find her "true soulmate". Classic case of grass looking greener on the other side. But you know what they say to that. If the grass looks greener on the other side, you need to water your own lawn.

During the separation, while neither Juana or her husband could bring themselves to start divorce proceedings, Juana embarks on a journey of discovering her Christian faith. She immerses herself in her religion and finds strength in that to take on whatever challenges & ramifications her decisions have brought about. Juana starts her journey with a list of all the things she finds wrong about her husband, things she convinces herself means he's the wrong man for her. In the process of learning to be truthful with herself and with her God, she finds that faults and all, she truly loves the man she married after all. It's only natural for marriage, bogged down by general hectic schedules and life stresses, to have romantically stagnate moments here and there. Juana learns that the right path is not to give up on your spouse when the romantic fizzies go flat, but to work to reinvigorate what you initially fell in love with, and she uses the story of her path to finding stability again in her marriage and her faith to help other struggling couples in a similar situation.

Juana writes in a conversational tone which I found very easy to read, and while she does offer food for thought, I can't say that I agreed with or loved everything she had to say {For example, I just can't get behind the whole "serving Christ by giving up my right to myself" line of thought she brings up -- To me, that sounds like not honoring yourself, which seems disrespectful not only to oneself, but a person's Creator}. In fact, much of what she brings up as kinds of "revelation moments" seemed pretty common sense to me. Is it really a revelation to discover men and women think and interpret things differently, and that we should take that into account when working through disagreements with our partners? Or being considerate of others should be made into a way of life?! This was a profound discovery for her? That just stumped me.

One of the parts of her story I was most intrigued by was her sharing her personal struggles with discovering "the gentle and quiet spirit" that the Bible says is supposed to be most pleasing to man and God. I admired her pursuit of tapping into this side of her (or at least attempting to) but was baffled at her reasoning that the reason she struggled to embrace a nature gentle and quiet in spirit was because she was dominated by an "independent, driven spirit". The two are not mutually exclusive! You can, in fact, be gentle and quiet yet independent and driven all at once!

I also struggled to sympathize with either Juana or her husband Terry. Sure, as an outsider reading this book, it may be easy to judge -- but as an impartial observer, I was just stunned at some of the shockingly bad moments of judgmental behavior and miscommunication between them. Yes, Juana did jump to conclusions pretty hastily -- assuming that her husband was not "the one" for her because he asked her to not be so slovenly in nature. But some of Terry's reactions to Juana's words or behaviors seemed over the top as well, at times almost controlling. And while I understand Juana seriously emotionally hurt him with her actions, I thought Terry's flip-flopping during their initial attempts at reconciliation seemed especially hurtful to continually put his wife through. For much of Juana's story I was thinking "Wow, these two actually stuck it out?!"

I'm glad to see that it looks like Juana and her mister worked it out and found faith in the process, but in the end I was not enamored with this story and did not take away much for reference in years to come. That's not to say Juana's story won't be resonating with someone else though --- perhaps there were just too few commonalities between my marriage situation and hers for her message to really speak to me on a deep level. I do appreciate her bravery though, in putting her marriage, flaws and all, out there with the honest intent of hopefully helping other struggling couples out there. Also, my thanks to Ambassador International for the opportunity to check out this upcoming release.

Before cracking open the book I took note of the gorgeous cover and was impressed by the endorsement from author and former missionary, Elisabeth Elliot.

When we meet Juana she is single and looking, then she meets Terry. They fall head over heels in love with one another, get married and begin living the American dream: college sweethearts, successful careers, nice cars, building a house together...what more could they want? But when the work week ends and they wake up to the weekend, Juana usually finds herself in the house alone in tears. Something is missing. She tells Terry time after time how she feels, yet because he doesn't feel the same, he chalks it up to being her issue. Reaching the conclusion the grass might be greener on the other side, Juana walks out.

Had she married the wrong guy?
Did "Mr. Right" exist?
She couldn't wait to find out!

Before long a gentleman did come along, but not who she thought she was looking for. To her surprise, she meets Jesus. Up to that point she hadn't known there was a God who cared about the important decisions in her life, who wanted a personal relationship with her. She believed it was up to her to do everything right.

Choosing Him All Over Again is Juana's story about romance and redemption. In midst of the waiting and hoping that her husband would take her back, she immersed herself in the Word and Christian fellowship. Chapter after chapter she shares the details of her separation and the work God did to grow her through prayer, thought processes, conversations and decisions. In trying times He taught her what a life in Christ should look like:

> how to pray
> trusting God with the outcome
> what it means to have a servants heart
> the roles of husbands and wives
> recognizing her sin and repenting
> fasting and praying for her marriage
> learning to filter the voices of naysayers
> preparing for opposition
> obeying God

As a new believer, Juana soaked up everything the Lord poured into her. She faced temptations and setbacks head on, with courage. Her honest look at the past sins in her marriage challenged me to examine my own. Her emphasis through scripture to truly die to your selfish desires and serve others selflessly with love, had my attention.

Hundreds of pages are devoted to the details of Juana's experiences leading up to her reconciliation with Terry, with viable lessons learned along the way. Most importantly, Christ takes center stage in her story. Though I must admit when the moment God moved to restore her marriage came about in the story, it felt a bit anti-climactic. Not because of how it came about, but because after all the waiting and hoping, only a paragraph or so was devoted to their triumph. I had hoped to read much more about the healing work the Lord did on the backside.

Nonetheless, Juana goes on to share more lessons learned along the way (many from her mentor Elisabeth Elliot), what life looked like living married as believers, advice for those still single or separated, insightful checkpoints to refresh your marriage, and a helpful prayer guide she has used for the twenty-some years since.

As I prayerfully pondered what to include in this post, I was reminded how often we give up the fight too soon. How we get impatient with God and choose to do things our own way out of frustration or desperation instead of waiting on Him. Juana made the hard choice to wait.

Regardless of the opinions of others, she chose to believe God and wait on His timing. Those who give up too soon miss out on the "suddenly's". In God's Word He often shows up "suddenly" and acts on behalf of His children; He comes out of nowhere and does that which is least expected. If we remain patient in the waiting while trusting Him we learn to persevere, which in God's economy develops our character, and increases our hope. He's doing that in my life, and He did it in Juana's. She waited patiently for the Lord, long beyond the time most would give up, and one day He moved "suddenly". Her marriage was restored.

Why Choosing Him All Over Again by Juana Mikels is Important

There once was a woman named Juana Mikels and she recently shared a story with me. Well, not just me, but it sure felt like it was for me. Her story was in the form of a book. A story that is raw, deep, and true. These are the effect her words had on me as I read Juana’s story.

Choosing Him All Over Again is a story about being lost, then being found, then finding redemption. It is a story about love, Jesus, and salvation. It is about marriage, hope, and truth.

The world has such a skewed version of marriage. The world (the devil) sees marriage as a means to an end, selfishness is his end game. But the God says differently. He says that marriage is selfless and service to your spouse.

The world says that if your marriage is too hard, you can throw it away with a divorce. But God says it is fixable and an institution to be honored. The Bible also says that as you serve one another and keep Christ as the focal point and guiding light, you can make the “too hard” marriage into a marriage that glorifies Him.

In Choosing Him All Over Again we are brought into Juana’s world as she comes thought one of the hardest times in her life, a marriage that is broken and seemly broken beyond repair, she comes from no Jesus to the point of More Jesus and Less of Herself.

As you read Juana’s story you will see that the road often travelled is full of bumps, bruises, and misunderstandings. As you get further into her story you will see that as Juana grows as a Christian just how mightily and amazingly Christ can influence your marriage.

If your marriage is on shaky ground, broken, full of discontent, anger, or anything that just doesn’t feel right, I urge you to pick up your copy of Juana’s book, Choosing Him All Over Again today. Honestly, even if your marriage seems spot on, grab your copy anyway, it is an incredibly encouraging book for any marriage.

You will have your eyes opened about things in your marriage. Things that you deemed acceptable, well, you might think differently after reading this book.

I have been truly blessed and encouraged with the words Juana has written.

God seriously can do the impossible. Juana proves that in her book.

Save your money, browse through your home knitting books instead

A complete waste of three bucks. The book does not match the description, is not for the "advanced" knitter, and is a collection of patterns I've seen elsewhere. The sample available for download is much more promising than the actual book. Part of it is a stitch dictionary, there are patterns for some 1970's looking garb,, and there is some explanation of steeking, entrelac, and other things we've all seen in a hundred other books.

While it was inexpensive, it was still a disappointment. From the description I was hoping for clever, helpful, advanced. This book is none of those. Sorry to be so harsh, but I get tired of being misled, even for three dollars.

A great advanced knitting resource!

I bought this book for my sister as she is very into her knitting, however on looking through it I found myself really interested too. There are a lot of images and even recommended youtube videos that I found really helpful. If you’re wanting to ‘step it up’ with your knitting then this is a great guide. It breaks down a range of advanced techniques very clearly, and focuses on clearly communicating the pattern behind the technique. The book also gives great tips for how to make the most of them; like making sure to using contrasting colours on a two-colour brioche stitch, but not necessarily on some other stitches. A great advanced knitting resource!

This Ain't Your Grandmaw's knittin'

This advanced knitting book has great instruction and pictures so that anyone can make wonderful patterns easily! Be ready to learn intricate design and great techniques for intarsia, enterlac, and creating a mitered squares technique. Read the book more than once and be sure to check out the various resources included for further knitting information. Learn steeking, the art of cutting-YES-cutting your stitches to create some amazing designs.Though the book says it's Knitting for Experts, it's so thorough that anyone can learn it. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Dr. John Edwin DeVore graduated from West Point with a BS degree; earned an MA in religious studies from Naropa University; an MBA and a PhD in human communication studies from the University of Denver; and an associate degree in business (golf management) from the Golf Academy of America. He served eight years in the United States Army, including two years of combat during the Vietnam War. His decorations include the Combat Infantryman's Badge, three Bronze Star Medals, two Air Medals, two Army Commendation Ribbons, three Vietnamese Gallantry Crosses, and the Vietnamese Staff Medal of Honor. John's civilian career spanned twenty-seven years as a corporate executive and a consultant. He is a student of life and is a spouse, a dad, a grandpa, an author, a golfer, and pianist.

Reflections On A Well Lived Life

West Point grad, decorated warrior, several Ph.D's and a successful business career as a vice president for a multi-national Corporation, this is the man all our mothers hoped we would grow up to be. But, "Sitting in the Flames," isn't just another self congratulatory autobiography by a successful, self-satisfied American. Instead, DeVore uses his own life and experiences to investigate the Vietnam War and its causes and examine the cultural myths that are leading our country into a belief that militarism and war are the only road to peace and freedom. If you are a Vietnam veteran, as I am, read this book. If you are on active duty, have a friend or relative on active duty, read this book. If you are a young person embarking on a career and have no plans to participate in the military, but want to understand how to avoid the pitfalls of "group thought", read this book. And finally, if you're older, retired and tired of playing golf everyday and tending to a garden and want to reinvigorate your life, read this book. The simple steps set forth in, "Sitting in the Flames," won't in and of themselves change your life, but they will help you understand your own thought processes which guide your life, and that is surely a first step to change.

Sitting in the Flames is offered to those who long for a breath of hope, freedom and peace amidst the harsh reality of runaway consumption; of the myth of war; of environmental degradation; and of our cultural conditioning that nourishes what one believes, as opposed to how one behaves. This book really touched me. Dr. John DeVore went back in time and relived his two tours of Viet Nam and came to terms with himself. The learning was that you need to sit in your own personal Viet Nam wars and traumas to be able to move forward and help others to overcome their own personal wars. This is truly a remarkable book for anyone who's fought in a war or knows someone who's fought in a war. This book has everything that it needs to start your own journey to healing.

The book is well written -- it flows nicely -- isn't complicated

The book is well written -- it flows nicely -- isn't complicated. I really liked the format -- made it an easy read. The author deftly weaves the reality of his stroke with his spirituality that saw him through his experience. He pulls no punches about what he endured with his stroke..it can be graphic at times........but the element of hope always shines through. The author is correct, the principles of his book can apply to almost any unexpected journey in our lives.

Worthwhile reading for any too busy person

This very personal book is written by a minister whose life was changed by a stroke and heart attack in the midst of a successful ministerial career. His description of the signs of its onset is gripping. (Lee includes an appendix of signs of impending stroke that is worth the price of the book.) Using many scripture passages and devotional thoughts, Lee walks us through his rehabilitation, the support of his church, and the moment when he had to be let go as pastor so the church could go on. He includes several bios of Bible people and has the text of several gospel songs he wrote with a friend in his youth to illustrate life's lessons
This book is touching, challenging to read, and rich in spiritual and health resources. The subtitle "Beating the Odds to Become a Walking Miracle" is a good summary

Our story is set in the not-too-distant future. Muslims have succeeded in becoming the majority of several European populations, adding to their dominance in the Middle East. The collision of these forces is predictable, the fallout is anything but.

Blake Kershaw, native son of Virginia, joined the Army out of high school and pushed through years of training to join the elite Special Forces. After recovering from multiple injuries acquired in the Hindu Kush, he pursued college to advance his career. Blake’s character and refined skills make him a choice recruit for agencies operating at the leading edge of the war on terror.

The Sodality, (operating publically as Global Reparations, an NGO) was formed by a small group of mostly American retired military leaders, businessmen, politicians, and ministers. What started as a loose connection of friends and colleagues crystallized into a powerful network dedicated to fighting the onslaught of global jihad and those conspiring with them for their own agendas.

Based in the Czech Republic with facilities in fifteen locations worldwide, the Sodality runs missions ranging from sabotaging terrorist finances and supply lines to assassinations of terrorist leaders. Their formation and activities were inspired by relentless attacks on a constitutional republic, attacks on the West, and fecklessness government leaders.

Omar, born and raised in Lebanon is rescued and taken in by the Muslim Brotherhood at the age of seven. His intelligence and strength flourish under the tutelage of a powerful and well-connected jihadist. The lessons learned at the feet of his mother and father inculcates Omar with a deep understanding of Islam and hatred for anyone outside the faith, especially the Zionists and their allies.

His dedication and training rewards Omar with favor from his superiors and ascension through the ranks. He becomes the go-to guy for the most important and dangerous missions, including arms transfers, kidnappings, assassinations, and incursion assaults.

The OISC: Organization of Islamic Sura Councils, an international assemblage of Islamic leaders in religion, business, and politics from fifty-seven nations formed to coordinate the myriad jihadist groups toward a global caliphate. Though it seems to the outside world Islam is united, a deep division followed the death of Mohammad and the struggle over who would take the reins of power. The world media is helpful in limiting the exposure of the violence between the factions and the resulting alliances connecting governments and sects.

As the spread of the Muslim religion accelerates toward dominance, the war between Sunnis and Shi’as is subjugated to the common desire to destroy Israel and America. They can divide the world between them after the Great Satan is obliterated.

As Omar’s accomplishments compile, he moves closer to the OISC power base. He lusts after greater recognition and ascension to the upper echelons of the council. His pursuit also makes him a target in the sites of the Sodality.

The paths of our main characters are destined to cross and when they do, a series of events are ignited neither could predict nor want. The ultimate result of their conflict will take our readers by surprise.

Global Reparations approaches Blake Kershaw when he leaves the military after an assignment with Delta Force. Because he remained officially dead according to public record, he was the ideal choice to carry out precise missions against jihadist targets. Omar is the enticement used to recruit Blake and becomes his singular obsession. Battle, as they say, is always a fluid environment and in this case Blake finds it’s also toxic. The skewed outcome of their war sets a series of plotlines in motion which reach a climax of mangled relationships and purposes.

THE REAL ISLAMIC THREAT TO AMERICA

This work exposes the genuine threat of Islam.
This work should be read by government executives, legislators, and judiciary at all levels.
The threat is growing every day and has been pretty much ignored by presidents for the last quarter century.
The complete infiltration of our national government including the military is well underway.
I pray that this novel will help awaken the American Sleeping Giant that is the American people as Pearl Harbor awoke America 73 years ago.

A great read

I prefer writers who have been in the "arena." If you've been there then you need to prove you can't write. If you haven't been on the Frontlines prove to me you know your subject. These two authors have been there and their writing reflects that. There is a lot of truth in this fictional account of a world in the not too distant future. Gentlemen, thanks for the read. I hope there is more to come!

Interesting behind the scenes look at some of what is actually going on today in fiction form

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It is obvious they have some inside information about what is going on behind the scenes; some of which is quite troubling (assault on and removal of biblical Christians from our military) and some encouraging ( a remnant of the committed). I wasn't expecting it to be on par with some of my very favorite authors and it wasn't, but the realism and timeliness and authenticity of the plot and story made it well worth the read. I was finished the day after I started it.

Trying it OUt

My granddaughter is on the Autism Spectrum and is developmentally delayed. She loves her LPS items. Since she has difficulty with reading I am thinking that she is really going to enjoy the comic book type delivery of the stories. I know that as children my sisters and I read comics all the time and they really helped us to become better readers. I'm hoping that will work in this instance too. But I can't report on that as I bought this as part of her Christmas present. I can say that the paper is quality and so is the cover. This is not a comic, but a book. Pictures are not full color though. Very limited in color schemes. Old comics were better in that department. But the book is built to last and withstand lots of readings. All in all I'm pleased.

Amazing comic! This comic is a set of five fun and enjoyable stories from the epic LPS franchise, and it is terrific! The characters are great, amusing, and just like how they are from the TV show, which is great. The stories are interesting, fun and very exciting to read through! Not to mention the illustrations are very cool! Amazing comic! Can't wait for more brilliant LPS comics like this one!
