Ramesh Shah immigrated to the United States from India in 1967. He spent his career in Quality and Regulatory management in the U.S.A. Ramesh enjoys traveling, reading, walking and photography. He and his wife Mina have two daughters and three grandchildren.

The Perfect Memoir of the American Dream Realized

Ramesh Shah and Richard Graves have given us a perfect memoir--engaging, inspiring, educational, emotional, optimistic, thought-provoking, humorous, and exceptionally well-paced--which should be read by every immigrant and every person who wants to understand the immigrant experience or how fortunate Americans are. Beginning in the tenements of Mumbai, where a young boy sharing a tiny apartment with a large family imagines the impossibility of owning a radio or having a towel of his own or a full glass of milk every morning, this exceptionally well-written story tells of that boy overcoming hardship and crises to come to America, deal with culture shock and homesickness, and become a successful scientist who then shares his dream life in America with his extended family. Told in an honest, humble, conversational, matter-of-fact style without whining, dramatics, or pontificating, this memoir is the tale of the American dream fully realized and accessible. This is by far the best memoir I have ever read and I give it my highest recommendation.

This was a wonderful, fast

This was a wonderful, fast, fluid read. Rather than read about the "general" living conditions of those in poverty in India, Ramish's story brought those conditions to life in a very matter-of-fact way. Life was not described, as you would expect, in a "poor-me" tone of voice, but through the eyes of a loving son and brother who found beauty and hope among squalid living conditions.. This book taught me how the power of a goal and dream can be reached with support, endurance, extreme hard work and perseverance. I learned more about the Jain religion; arranged marriage and the struggles of new immigrants than I had expected. I will recommend this to all my book/story loving colleagues.

Mr. Shah's story is an amazing journey about struggle, perseverance, and the belief that tomorrow will be better than today. It is set against a beautiful backdrop of love, loss, and the challenges of immigrating into a place that has customs and norms that are far different from what he was accustomed to. It is truly inspiring!!
