I hope you like "Knife Skills," the first book starring food writer Trudi Wells. Like Trudi, I was raised in California, and I've also worked as a newspaper food writer. So it's natural that readers want to know how much of Trudi's character is sourced from my own life. Did I really once get locked in a restaurant's walk-in freezer while on assignment? And did I really write a joke headline that was accidentally printed in the final edition of our paper? No comment!

Julie Adler is a journalist covering food and drink who also writes a series of cozy culinary mystery novels about the smart-mouthed food writer Trudi Wells. More than anything else, she loves hearing from readers.

Sharp, Funny, and Interesting (In a good way!)

I snatched this book for free and am glad I did because it was a treat to read. The reader gets to watch Trudi, a reporter at a failing newspaper, switch from covering hard news to writing features. As Trudi learns how to dial back the basic who, what, when, where, how, and why so she can write engaging soft fluff about food and restaurants, she's intent on solving a a chef's murder.
Throughout the book, we see Trudi's interactions with her family, police, colleagues, and murder suspects. The book is fast-paced and sharply written with good wit and the right amount of insight into reporting, amateur detective work, police interactions, and relationships (colleagues and family).
I enjoyed Trudi and her mission in this book. I'll most likely read more in this series.

A delicious murder-mystery

A news writer is suddenly transferred to the food section of the California paper for which she works and discovers a dead chef during her first day in her new position. Crafted with a flair for the culinary arts and a ready knowledge of the newsroom, Ms. Adler's story will leave you hungry for more. See what I did there? :) Off to find a decent restaurant - and some fine wine!

Trudi Wells is an excellent cozy mystery heroine who not only develops knife skills and a mean feature on a murdered chef, she steps into the role of reluctant gumshoe naturally. Julie Adler clearly knows restaurants, newspapers, the food industry and her way around a kitchen. Highly recommended.
