Former beatnik, former member of novelist Ken Kesey’s famed Merry Band of Pranksters, retired journalist and one-time Executive Editor of Larry Flynt’s notorious Hustler Magazine, Lee Quarnstrom has jammed a lot of living into just one life! Now available, his memoir “WHEN I WAS A DYNAMITER, or How a Nice Catholic Boy Became a Merry Prankster, a Pornographer and a Bridegroom Seven Times,” is several fascinating, adventurous autobiographies packed into one. Quarnstrom left home when, he claims, he discovered that his mother was the world’s worst cook. Apparently seeking edible sustenance as well as excitement, he thumbed rides back and forth and up and down across the country – and Mexico – living and loving in some of the capitals of bohemia. His journalistic career started at age 19 when he covered the classic “Front Page” cops and robbers beats at the City News Bureau of Chicago. His stops as a post-Beat Generation, pre-Hippie beatnik included sojourns in San Francisco, Greenwich Village, Seattle, Mexico City and Kesey’s remote home in the Santa Cruz Mountains above the Bay Area. Writing about his peripatetic lifetime, Quarnstrom tells of rubbing shoulders and making friends with a wide spectrum of well-known writers and artists – such as Paul Krassner, founder and editor of The Realist, the late Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, poet Allen Ginsburg, death-and-dying spiritual counselor Stephen Levine, musicians such as Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia, and Neal Cassady, hero of several Jack Kerouac novels and driver of “Further,” Kesey’s psychedelically painted old school bus. “WHEN I WAS A DYNAMITER” also recounts his ongoing sorrow since the 1982 fatal shooting of his 18-year-old son, Eric, near some of the San Francisco beatnik bars where Quarnstrom had hung out with other writers and artists and musicians. Lee Quarnstrom has asked his wife to order just one memorial word on his gravestone – Beatnik. Born in a small Washington lumber mill town and raised for the most part there and in Chicago, Quarnstrom moved to the Bay Area in the mid-1960s in time to join the Merry Band of Pranksters, the acid-fueled crew aboard author Ken Kesey’s psychedelically painted bus with “Further” as its destination and a warning across its rear: “Caution, Weird Load.” With the musical Grateful Dead in tow, the Pranksters brought psychedelia to the west coast with their famed Acid Tests! Prior to his move to California, Quarnstrom was a young Chicago newspaperman in the final days of the Windy City’s old-time, “Front Page” journalism. Lucky enough to have read Jack Kerouac’s ON THE ROAD before freeways replaced two-lane blacktop roads, he began years of wandering by sticking out his thumb and hitching rides back and forth and up and down around the country. Stops along the way included New York City, Mexico City, Seattle, a remote redwood canyon in the Santa Cruz Mountains, nearby Santa Cruz, and Los Angeles, where he was Executive Editor of the notorious smut magazine, Hustler. Quarnstrom did, in fact, spend one summer felling tall trees and blasting boulders as Assistant Dynamiter on an Olympic National Park trail crew. And the woman he’s asked to describe him on that tombstone is indeed his seventh wife.

Beatniks, Merry Pranskters, Electric Kool-Aid ... Get Ready for the Adventure!

If you're a fan of Beatniks, Merry Pranksters, the '60s, excellent memoir, or LSD (no questions asked), then I truly hope you will buy this book. Author Lee Quarnstrom, writes about his adventures with Ken Kesey, Ram Dass, Paul Krassner, Hunter S. Thompson, Allen Ginsburg, Stephen Levine, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia, Neal Cassady, and more. Lucky for us, Lee Quarnstrom has an amazing gift for storytelling and hasn't forgotten a thing along the way.

Psychedelic memoir

Lee Quarnstrom is a journalist by profession and a story-teller by inclination. His memoir is a wonderful summation of his life and times, especially the 1950s and 1960s, a summation that he gives us in the form of well-narrated stories.

A small town kid, originally from what was then a somewhat isolated Pacific Northwest, Lee became the editor-in-chief of his student newspaper at one of the best public high schools in the country. Though in years to come, he found his attention often diverted by one picaresque adventure after another, he never looked back, culminating his career as reporter, columnist, and editor of the San Jose Mercury News.

But it's mainly those diversions, those amazing adventures, that Lee looks back on fondly now, and that make his memoir so entertaining. As an early member of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters, Lee describes the group's experimentation with LSD back before it occurred to the government to outlaw it. Dabbling in other consciousness-expanding drugs followed, and Kesey, Quarnstrom, and associates appear to have lived for several years in a psychedelic haze - surrounded by the comings and goings of aging "beatniks" like Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady, by the ever-changing cast of the Merry Pranksters themselves, and by members of bands such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and other Bay Area-based, late 60s musical groups - with occasional cameo appearances by the Hells Angels, for added excitement.

Lee lived in New York City, when Gotham was an edgy place for a blond, skinny, Scandinavian boy to hang out, and he lived in Mexico City during its brief period as a bohemian mecca south of the border. He did grunt work for news services. He delivered mail. He built national park trails. He worked as a self-proclaimed pornographer, editing Hustler magazine, hanging out with its owner Larry Flynt (and many Hustler "models") and with gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson.

He's had seven wives. He lost his only child, an 18-year-old son, to a street shooting - a loss whose grief haunts many pages of the book. Lee's no drug-addled "naif." He's been around the block a few times. But he knew what he was doing. And he knows where he's been.

Despite his dabbling in numerous activities that might well raise eyebrows in Topeka, Kansas, Lee's often breathtaking stories are told in the voice of a decent human being. Although Ken Kesey's friends and hangers-on at times sound like frat boys in a long-running party run amok, Lee shows us the excitement and joys of his participation in the beat and hippie culture of those days, without losing his ability to stand aside on occasion with his eyebrows raised ironically.

"When I Was a Dynamiter" may be one of the best and most readable pictures to date of an important era in America's cultural and literary history, written by a man who recalls it first hand and has the ability to recount his recollections in strong, expressive English. The book also offers a fine picture of an unusual life - one lived wide open to experience and observed with unflinching self-awareness.

KIRKUS BOOK REVIEW An impressive follow-up to Slayback’s (Boys, Bumps & Blood, 2013) debut memoir. The author picks up right where his first autobiography left off, in the fall of 1952. At the age of 14, he was shuttled from Duluth, Minnesota, to Lansing, Michigan, while his father headed to Florida. Such trips had been part of their regular routine ever since the author’s mother died; this time, he was left in the care of his married older sister, Lorna. Yet as heartbreaking as it was for the author to hear his father abruptly tell him to “learn to be happy on your own,” it hardly sets the tone for the remainder of the memoir. Instead, the author was resilient, throwing himself into a quest for happiness and contentment; he immersed himself in archery, bodybuilding and bow-hunting, among other things. His diligence with schoolwork eventually allowed him to go to college. There, he enjoyed , for a short time, pole vaulting, spent productive time on a horse ranch and met a steady procession of women. This improved effort is sure to delight readers of heartfelt, folksy autobiographies. Slayback writes with sincerity, imparting vignettes from his life with urgency, as if committing them to paper might relieve the pain or sorrow he encountered in his early youth. His love of Michigan particularly shines through (“Fall in Michigan is football season....In every city, town, or village, it’s in the air, the fresh, brisk, warm, sunny air of day, coupled with the slight bite of cool air in the evening”). He just as clearly describes his time spent learning to rope calves in a rodeo as he does a spicy boat trip to Cuba. The memoir’s cheeky title, though, belies the emotional, introspective landscape of the author’s life. Overall, Slayback relates his adventuresome life with gusto and reflection. A delightful second memoir that’s more engaging and contemplative than the first.

I found book two of the Boys to Babes series, “Babes, Booze & Biceps” intriguing in a number of ways. How could someone, who could almost be considered a throw-away-child, raised in such a non-traditional way, become so accomplished in so many areas of his life? It had to be a combination of brains, guts, determination, and a drive to succeed at any cost.
“Babes…” begins with Paul’s move to Michigan at the ripe old age of fourteen never to return to live with his father again in Minnesota. The book shows Paul’s progression from boyhood to manhood and a fierce independence. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Paul is on-his-own by the age of sixteen working to support himself, going to school, and excelling in athletics. The book takes us through his high school and college years in spellbinding detail.
The quantity and quality of his experiences along with his ability to network with people I think are exceptional when you consider the author’s background which was demonstrated so beautifully in book one, “Boys, Bumps & Blood.” I highly recommend both.

Suburban mayhem

A series of murders leaves Chester County, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia, holding its collective breath. Meanwhile, hard-working Detective Spagnola struggles to solve the deaths. The local flavor, along with the mastery of the subject matter, is what distinguishes his book from the routine crime drama. There is nary a pause or a lull in the action as Spags tries to beat the murderer to the next punch. This is a fresh, well-written, and engrossing crime drama that is well worth your time.

A must-read!

In my opinion Ollie's Dilemma is even better than Leo's Redemption, the author's first novel. When we meet him, Ollie is a paradox of sorts: local lawyer and "pillar of the community" but with a rakish past; loyal as the day is long to his friends and associates but never able to commit to a romantic relationship as an adult. In short, a flawed human being, as we all are. When a daughter he never knew about surfaces in his life suddenly, Ollie is forced to make some decisions he probably never contemplated as a younger man. We find out fairly early in the story why Ollie is the man he is, though; the wounds of his past bleed through every bandage or tourniquet he tries to apply - drink, workaholism, emotional detachment. The main intrigue of the story, however, is that the town is facing a rash of odd and increasingly violent crimes, and a shadowy figure emerges as the perpetrator. Ollie becomes involved, in some ways by choice but also for some reasons he doesn't even fathom until much later. He must unravel the mystery in order to protect those he loves and redeem himself from the horror and guilt of his past. Overall, a great and quick read because you will not want to put it down!

A well-written tale that will keep the pages turning!

In his follow up to Leo's Redemption, Scarbary introduces a new cast of characters who's lives are intertwined in ways no one could imagine. The writing is clean and crisp. The dialogue moves the story forward. A great second offering!

Ollie Tucker, an aging lawyer, has many regrets. He drinks too much, he never settled down, life and the practice of law have lost their appeal. Then everything changes with the arrival of Holly, a girl claiming to be his daughter. Scarbary weaves the past and the present into a tale full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end. A great read. Highly recommended. 5 stars well-deserved stars!

A Recipe You'll Enjoy

In the first chapter, start with an aging lawyer who is confronted by his daughter—the unknown product of an affair many years ago. Nothing new, a reader might be tempted to think. But, all good recipes have to start with an ordinary and reliable stock. It’s the other ingredients and the technique that make the end product stand out from the rest.

Now, stir in an unreliable old friend charged with bizarre burglaries. Add a good measure of painful events from the lawyer’s past. Thoroughly mix the ingredients in the bowl of a small southern town, simmer for three hundred sixty pages, and you’ve got a tasty dish, one guaranteed to please.

This is the recipe for Otis Scarbary’s latest novel, Ollie’s Dilemma. While his first book was impressive for a debut novel, this one is even better. The characters are more complex and the story is richer. Frankie is genuine and colorful—in her scenes, she steals the show. The development of the relationship between Ollie and his daughter is authentic, with a roller-coaster of emotions and obstacles.

Scarbary once again spins a good story, maintaining the tension and gathering momentum along the way. It entices the reader to think they’ve got it figured out, but don’t be so sure. This book is a great read, and one that I can easily recommend.

Fifteen years later, she decided to allow her inner creative genius loose and began writing. She has been an avid reader her entire life, with a special love for mysteries, so she thought it fitting to make her first novel one of suspense. Growing up as an Army brat, she has lived in several states and foreign countries. To this day, she enjoys traveling to new places and experiencing new cultures. When at home she is likely to be found enjoying a few extreme sports, such as: rock climbing, scuba diving, or whitewater rafting. Her willingness to enter into activities of mortal peril is balanced by her commitment to ensure the quality of life for animals through her service with various dog rescue organizations. She now lives in Middle Tennessee with her three dogs, Ginny, Holly and Luna.

I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK FOR AN HONEST REVIEW AND THIS IS MY HONEST OPINION .... OVER 18 READING.....
Charlene Stephens could barely move because her husband, Hank, had broken her two ribs, that's when she found out she was pregnant. She couldn't fight for herself but could for her unborn baby. She got help and left, not to be heard from again.
26 years later
Katie Freeman has been with the FBI for 3 years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and has just been transferred to Nashville, Tennessee and assigned to her new partner Michael Powell. Michael gave her four cold cases to review or see if she could figure anything out about them in her spare time. Katie was very sheltered all her life, till she left home at 18 to go to collage for her 3 year, that was 7 years ago. She has not talk to or seen her mother since, and doesn't know about any other family, any where BUT she knows not to talk about her past. First major case is someone killing women after inhumanly tortured them.Michael loves the way Katie's mind works when figuring out what happen,where est to go next. He likes her and she likes him but neither date co-workers so they become friends. He slowly learns more about her past..till finally she tells him a lot but not all.They eventually catch the killer but they have a lot happen while they figure out who is doing it but more importantly why. This is a great story line. I loved it and couldn't wait for more, if fact I started it right after I finished this book. And I hope there will be more stories about Katie and Micheal. In the files he gave he gave her the first day she will find a secret that she never would have dreamed of.

A well-written mystery that will keep you hooked till the very end!

For a debut mystery novel by a new author, this was a great read! With engaging characters and a plot that kept me guessing until the end, I found I couldn't put this book down. Very well written! I look forward to seeing the next Katie Freeman Mystery.

This book really kept me engaged... I found it difficult to stop reading... I finished it in a few hours. While there were a few unanswered question about the main character, I think it was a intentionally done to keep it open for future novels.
