KIRKUS BOOK REVIEW An impressive follow-up to Slayback’s (Boys, Bumps & Blood, 2013) debut memoir. The author picks up right where his first autobiography left off, in the fall of 1952. At the age of 14, he was shuttled from Duluth, Minnesota, to Lansing, Michigan, while his father headed to Florida. Such trips had been part of their regular routine ever since the author’s mother died; this time, he was left in the care of his married older sister, Lorna. Yet as heartbreaking as it was for the author to hear his father abruptly tell him to “learn to be happy on your own,” it hardly sets the tone for the remainder of the memoir. Instead, the author was resilient, throwing himself into a quest for happiness and contentment; he immersed himself in archery, bodybuilding and bow-hunting, among other things. His diligence with schoolwork eventually allowed him to go to college. There, he enjoyed , for a short time, pole vaulting, spent productive time on a horse ranch and met a steady procession of women. This improved effort is sure to delight readers of heartfelt, folksy autobiographies. Slayback writes with sincerity, imparting vignettes from his life with urgency, as if committing them to paper might relieve the pain or sorrow he encountered in his early youth. His love of Michigan particularly shines through (“Fall in Michigan is football season....In every city, town, or village, it’s in the air, the fresh, brisk, warm, sunny air of day, coupled with the slight bite of cool air in the evening”). He just as clearly describes his time spent learning to rope calves in a rodeo as he does a spicy boat trip to Cuba. The memoir’s cheeky title, though, belies the emotional, introspective landscape of the author’s life. Overall, Slayback relates his adventuresome life with gusto and reflection. A delightful second memoir that’s more engaging and contemplative than the first.

Paul Slayback is an attorney who lives with his wife, Carrie, in Newport Beach, California. Both are active hikers and the author's previous book, Boys, Bumps & Blood, about growing up in northeastern Minnesota in the 1940s, are timeless tales of boyhood from another era.

I found book two of the Boys to Babes series, “Babes, Booze & Biceps” intriguing in a number of ways. How could someone, who could almost be considered a throw-away-child, raised in such a non-traditional way, become so accomplished in so many areas of his life? It had to be a combination of brains, guts, determination, and a drive to succeed at any cost.
“Babes…” begins with Paul’s move to Michigan at the ripe old age of fourteen never to return to live with his father again in Minnesota. The book shows Paul’s progression from boyhood to manhood and a fierce independence. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Paul is on-his-own by the age of sixteen working to support himself, going to school, and excelling in athletics. The book takes us through his high school and college years in spellbinding detail.
The quantity and quality of his experiences along with his ability to network with people I think are exceptional when you consider the author’s background which was demonstrated so beautifully in book one, “Boys, Bumps & Blood.” I highly recommend both.

A Golden memoir that shines from beginning to end!

Once again Paul Slayback is fresh and unabashed as he rolls back the clock in this second work about his life as a Midwestern, hometown boy becoming a man.
The book and the boy-man push forward with determination, skill and sincerity as “Slay” recounts innocent, schoolboy antics with his buddies, adventures with cowboys and Cuba, and conquests with women and sports. Along the way people give the muscled, golden haired Michigan boy a chance and he gives back in kind with his hard work, wit, charm, and loyalty.
These everyday life events of adolescence and young adulthood are seemingly not everyday as they are retold skillfully with action, mystery, and a can’t put it down momentum. The boy-man has a golden touch and so does this raw and warm personal memoir.

A Modern Day, Can't Put Down, Odyssey

“Optimism is a good thing”, says Paul after essentially being orphaned in Michigan at the age of 14. “It’s comfortable, reliable, knocks opponents off their stride.” It’s Paul’s unassuming optimism that takes him on his amazing adventures and makes this book such a good read. Paul is a modern day Odysseus, championing bows and arrows, larger than life strong men, cowboys, and dozens of young women ready to seduce him. This is a captivating story that ensnares you, sweeps you along and leaves you smiling.
