Lays groundwork for deeper exploration.

Although I'm not necessarily into handmade jewelry I picked it up to learn more about niche in general plus i know a few people who i was considering giving a handmade jewelry set too.

The most valuable section of the book is how it describes the tools needed to get the jobs done. The chapters are illustrated and I found this helpful because some of the tools mentioned by the book to make earrings are things I never heard of such as nippers and chain nose pliers. The images helped me to realize that there were a lot more things which are needed besides a jewelry set itself.

I would definitely recommend this book as a base foundation introduction to give as gift with a full on jewelry making set and tools for any person who is looking for a new hobby.

I love this book! It's chock full of creative and cute ideas to make handmade jewelry as gifts or just for yourself! I'm looking forward to trying out some of the designs. Author Allison Keys shares techniques for creating beautiful beaded necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and hair accessories. If you or someone you know is crafty and is interested in making jewelry, I'd definitely recommend this book.

Pete Dexter is the author of the National Book Award–winning novel Paris Trout as well as Spooner, Paper Trails, God’s Pocket, Deadwood, Brotherly Love, and Train. He has been a columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News and the Sacramento Bee, and has contributed to many magazines, including Esquire, Sports Illustrated, and Playboy. His screenplays include Rush and Mulholland Falls. Dexter was born in Michigan and raised in Georgia, Illinois, and eastern South Dakota. He lives on an island off the coast of Washington.

Dexter's First

Pete Dexter is not my favorite columnist, yet I do not know him as one. My first Dexter novel, Spooner, had my attention and over for his style from page one. God's Pocket is his first novel and in some areas you can feel the choppiness. Nevertheless, a romantic tragedy I would recommend to anyone.

I liked this book,Dexter's first, better than his National Book Award winning "Paris Trout". The characters were fully developed and tension was maintained throughout. Pathos and humor dominate this book which is a fast read.

My Sojourn in Paradise is a story about perseverance, love and faith. The writer draws you in with tales of her childhood growing up on the beautiful island of Jamaica. The challenges she faced may be unique to her surroundings but the lessons learned are universal. It has inspired my life and drawn me closer to my purpose. Highly recommended!

In 1960 Harry, now a junior in high school struggles to fit in. He is attracted to several girls but too shy to ask them out. Instead, he concentrates on responsibilities at home, in school, at his church, and at after-school jobs while he really longs for greater independence. He reaches a turning point when his French teacher persuades him to apply for a summer student exchange program that might enable him to travel to France. Still struggling to improve his academic performance, he applies and builds his hopes on acceptance. Eventually a host family in Germany rather than France welcomes him. Harry buys a transcontinental bus ticket to Montreal and sets out on a great adventure. He boards a ship with hundreds of other young Americans headed to host families in Europe. During his odyssey across the United States he talks with several interesting strangers. In discussions with them and with students onboard the ship he realizes he is on a much grander journey to see a more interesting world than he had ever imagined. Along the way he becomes more aware and sure of his feelings towards strangers and some of the young women he encounters in school and during his voyage to Europe. He anticipates that the summer will be a turning point in his life. This fictionalized autobiography tells the story of a young man setting out to meet challenges and opportunities that the world offers him in a way that will change him forever.

An Honest and Thoughtful Coming of Age Tale

This complex and exquisitely detailed third person novel, is the fictionalized version of the coming of age of author Bruce Byers, a career Foreign Service officer, who has served his country at diplomatic posts overseas for almost three decades. Protagonist Harry Forth, who is born during WWII and who must endure the challenges of early adolescence in the conformist post-war fifties, is the dutiful son of an Air Force officer, an active Boy Scout, a regular churchgoer and a good student. His perspective on life is changed forever following a single night when he is stranded with his father and brother in the New Mexico desert during a snowstorm. Thanks to Byers’ personal journals, which have provided the spine and many of the intimate scenes in this odyssean American novel, we are treated to a moving tale that is at times deeply personal, while also chronicling in great detail the daily routines of home life and an extraordinary, solo, cross-country journey that takes place during an anodyne era that is almost impossible for young people of today’s generation to imagine. Female readers will enjoy tracking Harry’s growing realization that some women may actually be more intelligent than men—still a radical idea in the fifties and early sixties. This honest and thoughtful tale will teach, entertain and leave readers with an appreciation for the importance of being willing to experience life far outside your comfort zone.

An exciting, personal insight into the process of cultural understanding.

This fictionalized memoir is an account that will stir the soul of any person who has devoted serious time and energy to learning a foreign language and culture. Byers’ stories of love and uncertainty with women transcend the routine descriptions he makes of adolescent life. They remind us that the journey of cultural identification requires us to forget, to leave behind our mother (tongue) so that we can find it again in an unexpected, new formulation expanding our sense of self and others. Harry’s journey is just such an adventure: he is a “semionaut” searching for meaning in the binary age of the Cold War. His transition to adulthood is, in the end, profoundly marked by his intercultural experience in Germany.

Byers’ work demonstrates the positive impact that exposure to foreign environments can have on youth populations. True to his Foreign Service career, his novel is a testament to the value of educational exchanges in the name of mutual understanding between nations. Highly recommended for middle and high school students planning to study abroad in college, and anyone interested in the psychology behind cultural fluency.

Covers the waterfront

There's more to Northwest seafood than salmon, halibut, spot prawns, manila clams, Penn Cove mussels, oysters, geoduck, and...seriously, I could go on for another twelve species without covering anywhere near the ground that Karen does in this book. What I love about Seafood Lover's Pacific Northwest is how it ventures into so many corners of our region's seafood culture. It features high-end restaurants, seaside shacks, clam digging, festivals, fishmongers, and public markets. Above all, Seafood Lover's PNW is inclusive: in addition to the "catch it, steam it, and serve it," you'll read about (and want to visit) great seafood dishes at Peruvian, Chinese, French, Cajun, and (especially) Japanese restaurants.

In other words, this book is exactly what it says. Non-northwesterners, prepare to get jealous all over again. And did I mention recipes?

Tempting travel ideas and approachable recipes!

As a resident of the Pacific Northwest for more than seven years, I am embarrassed to say how little I knew about the sea creatures that live here and how to eat them. In a clear and friendly way, this book gives me a guide to the delicious seafood in my own backyard. I'd buy it just for the definitions and the recipes, but it's also a to-do list for day trips. It highlights the best places to visit for food and views. Definitely a great gift for someone who just moved to the Pacific Northwest, or like me, has been neglecting the amazing restaurants and other destinations we have around here. One warning: Don't read this when you're hungry. You will find yourself craving delicious seafood just a few pages in.

Useful & Entertaining for PNW Travel

My family and I travel a lot around the Pacific Northwest and we're going to keep this book in our car along with our hiking book because it's that useful. It has tons of great restaurant recommendations, recipes and off-the-beaten-path tips you wouldn't get on say Yelp or Foursquare. You don't have to be a foodie to find it useful, you just have to like seafood and local charm.

Diamonds Are EVERYBODY'S Best Friend

I read excerpts and snippets of this book leading up to it's release so my expectations were already set high and so was my anticipation for it and I have to say Rio Jonz did NOT disappoint.

A handfull of renegade hookers, a dead "john"..... a live "John" and his son, a fresh out pimp thats not a pimp and a bag full of diamonds all put in the pot together makes for an awesome read.

Its a great story about Loyalty, Love, Addiction, sibling rivalry and Greed.

I can't wait to see whats next.

Inspired by his own uncle's evangelistic outlook and the humanitarian outlook of his wife's family, Drs. KE and Leyamma Mathew couldn't escape accepting volunteerism as their life's philosophy. Thus it was easy for the author to reminisce and to weave the life story of PC George and Leyamma by providing most accurate information. This book will be a good guide in understanding the original concepts of volunteerism and its far reaching and broad effects. To those who consider themselves as unworthy in spite of owning immense material worth, this book will enlighten them the value of helping others that complements self worthiness. As a small Sunday School boy, I remember putting a pinch of rice in a bucket along with other students to sustain the members of this adult orphanage five decades ago. Rice was pooled from different areas irrespective of its type of genetic make up. A must read book by all diaspora youths. It is not often that a pure, sweet book comes along that captivates you, and at the same time makes you ask, “What difference am I making in the lives of others?” In Orphans of Mundakapadam, you enter the hearts and passion of two orphan siblings who dedicate their entire lives to serving the poor and other orphans. P.C. George and his sister, Leyamma, live out their Christian faith in Kerala, India ministering with love, compassion, and great respect for those who have nowhere else to turn. This book will breathe fresh life into you regardless of your age or status.
