This compact (256 pages) guide is written by a long-time resident of "Sin City", a much-respected journalist with a trained eye for top values and remarkable bargains, comfortable hotels and delightful meals, both on and off "The Strip". He wittily describes the gambling hereabouts, but also the options for visitors with less interest in gambling: the theaters, museums, stores and attractions, the out-of-town visits, the nearby natural wonders. With fold-out map, yet for only $10.95, this is a remarkable guidebook buy.

About the Author
Rick Garman began visiting Las Vegas as soon as he was old enough to not be barred from doing so by pesky things like laws. He has been writing about the city for over fifteen years, when he co-authored Frommer's Las Vegas with his best friend, Mary Herczog. He went on to create Vegas4Visitors.com, one of the most respected Las Vegas travel resources on the Web, and has appeared in various outlets as a self-proclaimed Vegas expert, although much of that expertise has been gained sitting at a slot machine with a glazed look in his eye while mumbling incoherently to himself. Rick was honored to return to the Frommer fold in 2010 after Mary passed away after a long struggle with breast cancer. He dedicates this book to her memory. Rick splits his time between Los Angeles, CA and Las Vegas, NV.

What happens in Vegas...
By Jen
Very dry but informative about the what to see, where to stay, and what to do while in Vegas. Could be made better by focusing on those wishing to have a family vacation (traveling dance competition) in the adult playground of the world. Would have appreciated more photographs as well.

I was not impressed with this guide. It didn't give a good overview of the information that I needed. Usually I like Frommer's. I can't recommend this one. Maybe it tried to do too much in a few pages.

The Happiest People in the World: A Novel, by Brock Clarke

“[A] dark and funny satire . . . Infidelities, secret identities and double-crosses . . . Reflects the absurdity of any country obsessed with spying on its own people.” —The Wall Street Journal

Take the format of a spy thriller, shape it around real-life incidents involving international terrorism, leaven it with dark, dry humor, toss in a love rectangle, give everybody a gun, and let everything play out in the outer reaches of upstate New York--there you have an idea of Brock Clarke’s new novel. Filled with wonder and anger in almost equal parts,The Happiest People in the World is a ripped-from-the-headlines tale of paranoia and the all-American obsession with security and the conspiracies that threaten it.

“A literary first: a book that feels like the love child of Saul Bellow and Hogan’s Heroes, full of authorial cartwheels of comedy and profundity.” —GQ

“The Happiest People in the World begins with a raucous bar scene featuring party streamers, smoke, prone bodies, spilled fluids and a stuffed moose with a surveillance camera in its left eye . . . [Clarke has] success in dreaming up oddball originals that have instant appeal.” —Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“[Clarke] creates books that taste like delicious cuts of absurdity marbled with erudition.” —The Washington Post

“A whiz-bang spy satire bundled in an edgy tale of redemption . . . His comedy of errors is impossible to put down.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

“A darkly hilarious novel . . . The writing is clever, the dialogue snappy and understated, and the effect is as pleasantly unsettling as anything Kurt Vonnegut Jr. ever wrote.” —The Portland Sun

“A zany and fast-paced book that explores the myriad ways people of all nations make themselves and others unhappy.” —Chicago Tribune, Printer’s Row

“Ranks among the funniest and most relevant social satires I’ve read . . . It might just make you the happiest reader in the world.” —The Dallas Morning News

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, November 2014: It’s long been a credo of mine: any story that begins with a stuffed moose head on the wall of an upstate bar, a spy camera embedded in its eye looking down on a sprawl of gunshot victims… well, attention must be paid. And my attention to Brock Clarke’s weird, wise and witty fifth novel, The Happiest People in the World, never wavered. In a nutshell, sort of: a Danish cartoonist named Jens unwisely draws a cartoon of the Prophet, making him an assassin’s target and prompting the CIA to relocate him to America, where he poses as a high school guidance counselor in a small, strange New York town. That’s where the story gets truly bizarre, often hilariously so. I’m no fan of the term “laugh out loud,” but I did audibly chuckle, a lot. (Example: “it’s all good” really is “the most idiotic expression on the planet.”) Without giving too much away: Jens (now known as Henry) works for Matthew (the school principal), both nursing secrets, both victims of lies. But beneath the convoluted entanglements of small town love and small town spies—veering too close to madcap at times—there’s a deceptively touching story of flawed men who aren’t quite sure how to be fathers, husbands, or men. Or happy. --Neal Thompson

Review

“A literary first: a book that feels like the love child of Saul Bellow and Hogan’s Heroes, full of authorial cartwheels of comedy and profundity.” —GQ

“[Clarke knows] how to get a novel off to a snorting good start . . . The Happiest People in the World begins with a raucous bar scene featuring party streamers, smoke, prone bodies, spilled fluids and a stuffed moose with a surveillance camera in its left eye . . . [Clarke has] success in dreaming up oddball originals that have instant appeal.” —Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“The funniest and smartest novel I have read in years. Yes! I thought, as I read these pages. That’s how you write a good book.” —Hannah Tinti, author The Good Thief

“[Clarke] creates books that taste like delicious cuts of absurdity marbled with erudition.” —The Washington Post

“[The Happiest People in the World] is relentlessly, and often hilariously, wrong on purpose. Brock Clarke . . . has never shied away from the ridiculous plot twist or the implausible personality quirk. And this new book is packed with them: Indeed, it is built almost entirely out of them. There is essentially nothing in it that, removed from context, makes any sense. Not that you would want it to . . . I can think of no other contemporary novel so preoccupied with the nature of familial love and romantic longing, and no other in which people are so concerned with their own obligations, and so far from comprehending what they actually are.” —The New York Times Book Review

“A zany and fast-paced book that explores the myriad ways people of all nations make themselves and others unhappy . . . Clarke's comedy is complex and packed with big ideas, but also wonderful sentences . . . This book is a goofball, but a goofball with an edge; its humor and quirkiness are not ends in themselves, but doors that Clarke uses to open the view out onto a bigger vista: the span of America, unto itself, and in relation to the world.” —Chicago Tribune’s Printers Row

“A whiz-bang spy satire bundled in an edgy tale of redemption . . . Clarke dazzles with a dizzying study in extremes, cruising at warp speed between bleak and optimistic, laugh-out-loud funny and unbearable sadness. His comedy of errors is impossible to put down.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Brock Clarke's hilarious new novel starts out in rural Denmark, then takes us someplace really foreign and utterly weird: upstate New York. The parallel universe Clarke creates there is both our world and not, and like his baffled, yearning characters, we navigate it with surprise and wonder.” —Richard Russo, author of Elsewhere

“[A] dark and funny satire . . . The ridiculous confusion of infidelities, secret identities and double-crosses that plays out reflects the absurdity of any country obsessed with spying on its own people.” —The Wall Street Journal

“Murder, arson, adultery, drugging and drinking, cruel politics--reading a book crammed with such activities can make the timid and yearning among us feel like the happiest people in the world.” —Edith Pearlman, author of Binocular Vision

“If the literary category of ‘mordant fable’ exists at all, it may be because Brock Clarke invented it. The Happiest People in the World is everything we fans have come to love from a Clarke novel: playful and deliriously skewed, and somehow balancing between genuinely great-hearted and gloriously weird.” —Lauren Groff, author of Arcadia

“Brock Clarke has long been one of my favorite writers, and this novel, good lord, is his best one yet. In The Happiest People in the World, Clarke portrays, with terrifying accuracy, the lives of people who constantly ruin things without ever quite understanding why or how, which eventually gives way to a strange kind of invulnerability. There is no writer who does this better than him, creating that wonderful mixture of unexpected, sharp comedy and genuine empathy. The Danes may be the happiest people in the world, but you can easily join those ranks by simply reading this amazing book.” —Kevin Wilson, author of The Family Fang

Interesting, but much too stage-managed
By James Mowry
A Danish cartoonist, presumed dead and on the run after drawing a picture of Mohamed at his editor's behest, after which his house was burned down, takes refuge in upstate New York. Things ensue. While there is a lot to like about this book--the way the characters are drawn, the well-depicted settings, some sharp observations, particularly about marriage, there is also a manipulative aspect to the whole proceedings as the author brings the cast of characters back together for the climax. This is a pleasurable read, but the book only has a few moments of genuine humor, and is occasionally awkward in its prose. The author also has the hugely annoying habit of foreshadowing everything with phrases like, "that was the last time so-in-so would do such-and-such." That habit gets pretty annoying, and together with the book's ending, which doesn't really deliver the emotional payoff the author is perhaps trying for, it leaves this reader a bit cold. It's like looking at a painting that is well drawn--far beyond our own ability to do so--but still comes across as untrue to life. Your mileage may vary.

More Novel than most Novels!
By Lance Cromwell
"The moose head was fixed to the wall, the microphone in its mouth was broken, but the camera in its left eye was working just fine, and as far as the moose head could see, this was just another Friday night in the Lumber Lodge! Perhaps even more Friday night than most Friday nights." Thus begins the wild, excellent, wicked~smart ride that is The Happiest People In The World, and this is anything but "just another" Novel... it is quite definitely more Novel than most Novels.

Clarke's most recent work is certainly a book that can hold contradictions, beautifully: It is a lightning fast read, but one that will encourage multiple readings... it is at once a sort of spy novel(but also, not), a playful romp, a darkly & deeply funny literary work, and underneath the fast-paced narrative, a quiet, heart-breaking meditation on the complicated, interlaced relationships that us humans find ourselves in, day~in and day~out. Happiest People is a snapshot of American Culture, as seen by both outsiders of the 'from another country' type, and by the outsiders that are from within this country (which is most of us who vote(or don't) by ballot, or by creative endeavor, or by good hard labor or one kind or another), the policy non-makers, the trend non-setters, the mass of people who are not on the inside, if such a thing exists.

On one level, this novel could be suggesting that there is no inside, nobody in-the-know, and that all that we see happening around us, and all that we are personally enveloped in, is a hodge podge of splinter groups acting out their lives along vectors that are sometimes lonely, often paranoid, and sometimes crash into others; and this at every level: government, education, in our homes. A horde of everyday people who have, as Aldous Huxley wrote, "failed to take into account man’s almost infinite appetite for distractions" and who will more frequently than not, ruin ourselves in the name of Love. And as sad as that may be, it is pretty damn funny, too, seen in the right light. Like, say, the light of the Lumber Lodge on a Friday night! Brock Clarke shows us to be the broken, but working (sort of) beings that we are, who see what we think we see, and react accordingly.

Were I to set to making a Super Smoothie! of writing that would begin to get at Clarke's creation here, i would have to throw in some (maybe all of) George Saunders for sure, some John le Carré, some Russell Banks, Richard Russo, David Foster Wallace, Alice Munro, Kurt Vonnegut, Andre Dubus, Tobias Wolff, Andrea Barrett, Joanna Scott, John Irving, David Sedaris, a dollop of Christopher Buckley, 5 or 6 stories from The Brothers Grimm, a bunch of Tony Hoagland poems, and a solid handful of pages from Them, by Jon Ronson; A House In The Sky, by Amanda Lindhout and Sara Corbett; and Driving Mr. Albert, by Mike Paterniti. That's where i'd start, anyway... No doubt, i'd have to work a long time, and throw in a great many more works to really get at the subtlety, complexity, and sheer tastiness of The Happiest People In The World.

Like many people who are gifted, but then add to that gift by working really hard, Clarke makes an incredibly layered, complicated work seem effortless, and as such it is easy to read and fun, but thought-provoking, and poignant as well. No small feat, that. This is a book that I have already recommended widely to my friends, but feel it is one to be recommended widely to all of the reading public.

Do yourself a huge favor and get a hold of The Happiest People In The World!
Enjoy....

What's So Funny?
By William Wilson
It’s difficult to write a book, apparently set in the real world, which makes you care about its central characters while putting them in ludicrously implausible situations. Brock Clarke seems to have tried but hasn’t succeeded here. All would be forgiven if he injected some more humor into the proceedings. The back cover blurbs would lead you to believe that this is a humorous romp. Now, I think I enjoy quirky humor as much as anyone, but the only time I laughed out loud reading this book was when Clarke repeated an old Monty Python line (“Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries,” since you asked). The characters in this book aren’t funny; they’re pathetic, violent, and strange.

Strange, haunting, powerful and highly recommended.
By Madame Noir
Joe R. Lansdale an award-winning novelist and is best known for his hard-hitting, dark yet humorous mysteries, suspense, horror, dark crime, sci-fi books and stories. He’s also written for comics and several of his novels have been adapted for films. Truly, a man for all genres.

Daniele Serra is an award-winning artist who illustrates comics, graphic novels and book covers. He’s just illustrated Clive Barker’s Hellraiser Bestiary #4 (with a story by Lela Gwenn) and a book of his extraordinary artwork, "Veins and Skulls" (December 15, 2013), is available on Amazon, published by SST Publications.

Brutal and beautiful. These were the two words that leaped into my mind as I read "I Tell You It’s Love". Lansdale and Serra have teamed up to produce a poetic and atmospheric graphic novel about the sickness of the soul that ordinary people call love, but what do psychopaths call it? In the end, our narrator and his object of lust Gloria seek out the ultimate in sensual suffering (at least for one of them), although our anti-hero still proclaims: “I tell you it’s love.” It might be love, but it's love amongst the damned.

This is a graphic novel that you’ll want to revisit again and again. The sinister and sinuous drawings hold secrets that you discover with each reading. Strange, haunting, powerful and highly recommended.

Blessed Chaos: A Journey through Instant Motherhood, by Ashley Wells

“What was it like going from no children to four children in an instant?”

Ashley Wells has answered this question countless times. Ashley, and her husband Michael, were licensed to accept a placement of up to four children aged eight and younger into their home through their local foster care system. They didn't realize these parameters would exactly describe the children God would bring into their lives.

In April 2012, after ninety minutes to prepare, Ashley and Michael became the parents of an eight-year-old boy, five-year-old girl, thirteen-month-old girl, and a two-and-a-half-week-old baby boy. Their journey included the typical “roller coaster” ride of emotions and setbacks, yet through God’s grace they persevered in the journey. On November 22, 2013 Michael and Ashley welcomed these four children into their family forever through adoption.

Releasing on their one-year adoption anniversary, Blessed Chaos: A Journey through Instant Motherhood is an inspiring memoir documenting Ashley's journey becoming a mother through foster care adoption and the lessons she learned along the way.

Blessed Chaos is written with the prayer to encourage women in the midst of their chaos, enlighten readers on the foster adoption process, and inspire people to think about how they are called to support foster children and foster parents.

Excellent, heartfelt story
By Betsy H
Several weeks ago I bought a copy of Blessed Chaos. This book had been on my radar since it was published last year. Blessed Chaos chronicles Ashley's story of how she and her husband became foster parents and suddenly had four children.

This is a heartfelt story, and I often wiped tears from my eyes as I read. Especially as I read it through the eyes of one who has faced the long, hard, wait of infertility, my heart ached knowing that adoption is also often a long, hard, wait. Adoption through foster care isn’t easy, and it’s not a quick fix to childlessness. However, my admiration is great for Ashley and her husband Michael – not only did they work hard to transition four children into their home where they lovingly parent them, but Ashley also works hard to encourage other adoptive and foster parents.

Even though their journey hasn’t been easy, Blessed Chaos demonstrates that God is good, and He is faithful. This is a story worth reading: a story of a God who puts the barren woman in her home as the happy mother of children, because He is able!

well written and wonderfully honest. I can draw many similarities between Ashley ...
By Sandy L Carpenter
Just finished this book and found it heartfelt, well written and wonderfully honest. I can draw many similarities between Ashley and her husband's journey and our own. Definitely a good read for anyone going through this process or considering it. The author is great about being honest when it comes to how hard fostering and adopting are but also how it is so worth it. She also speaks of her own feelings throughout the process and how things are not suddenly perfect once the kids are officially adopted. Great read. Blessings to this family.

A must-read for anyone involved in foster care!
By Kristin Petersen
Blessed Chaos is so beautifully and honestly written. My husband and I have been fostering for several years and could so easily identify with the situations Ashley writes about. I love how open she is with the struggles she faced and how she and her family worked through them.

This story is greatly encouraging to those currently in the midst of their own foster-adoption chaos and would be a great preparation tool for those considering or just beginning a foster journey.

Dead Scary.
By Liz Barnsley
First things first. If you have not then READ GIRL 4 FIRST. And The Two. And you should. If you havent. There may be spoilers ahead for the first two novels.

Here we go….

Detective Inspector January David doesn’t love me.

He loves his missing sister. He loves his job.

But he doesn’t love me. Not in the way he should.

I am his wife. I am still his wife.

And I will do anything for him.

No matter what I have to sacrifice.

So the third outing for January David, finds him coming to the end of the sabbatical enforced upon him after the events of “The Two”. Meanwhile a missing young girl is found dead, another murder victim begins to tell us her tale…and January will soon find himself caught up in the tangled web being weaved by our favourite psychotic killer once more…oh but which psychotic killer do you refer to I hear you ask? Well take your pick. The wonderfully drawn Eames or the enigmatic and dangerous Audrey David? Well, we will see…

What you get with this series of novels is Murder, Magic and Mayhem. A hint of the supernatural and a touch of fear. Or in my case a screaming case of the heebie jeebies. Every time. Every single time. Why? No idea – its all in the writing my friends.

Will Carver writes with a very quirky style – it is unique and very much his own. He uses multiple points of view to great effect – you hear from January, from Audrey, from Eames and from the victims, all interspersed with bridges from one to the other…a flowing and intelligent narrative that tells you everything you need to know whilst keeping it secret at the same time. Inventive writing indeed. It won’t work for everyone – but if you love a story that takes you “outside the box” then this is perfect for you.

As I was drawn inexorably towards yet another brain bending conclusion (yes, you will not get molly coddled here folks) I was at turns terrified, absorbed, captivated and entertained – as usual a perfect combination. This is perhaps my favourite of the three – because now the mythology and mystery at the heart of these novels is ingrained. I’m right there. I know what to expect and yet I am always, always taken aback. Perhaps I should say I have learned to expect the unexpected…

I adore this series in the same way that I adore John Connolly’s “Charlie Parker” series – because they are surprising, delightful, downright scary and utterly fascinating. Kudos.

mystery and supernatural
By L. .G. avid reader
I have now read all 3 January David novels (plus the short bridge book). I sometimes lose what time or when something is occurring - but I do enjoy the books. There is always a sprinkling of the supernatural - amid the crimes. Cool!
In this novel, January is on leave and goes to New York when an "Eames type murder" happens in New York. Audrey is back in the story. I think I'm ready for Audrey to be out of the story - but I can tell she will be back again... *sigh*. I really like Paulson and January working together. I am also ready for Murphy to get his "comeuppance". Have I mentioned before that I do not like stories where the main character has plots against him - especially by powerful people. Murphy may have been put in his place - and I do hope so

Something Rich and Strange: Selected Stories, by Ron Rash

From the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling award-winning author of Serena and The Cove, thirty of his finest short stories, collected in one volume.

No one captures the complexities of Appalachia—a rugged, brutal landscape of exquisite beauty—as evocatively and indelibly as author and poet Ron Rash. Winner of the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, two O Henry prizes, and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, Rash brilliantly illuminates the tensions between the traditional and the modern, the old and new south, tenderness and violence, man and nature. Though the focus is regional, the themes of Rash’s work are universal, striking an emotional chord that resonates deep within each of our lives.

Something Rich and Strange showcases this revered master’s artistry and craftsmanship in thirty stories culled from his previously published collections Nothing Gold Can Stay, Burning Bright, Chemistry, and The Night New Jesus Fell to Earth. Each work of short fiction demonstrates Rash’s dazzling ability to evoke the heart and soul of this land and its people—men and women inexorably tethered to the geography that defines and shapes them. Filled with suspense and myth, hope and heartbreak, told in language that flows like “shimmering, liquid poetry” (Atlanta Journal Constitution), Something Rich and Strange is an iconic work from an American literary virtuoso.

Review
''These stories describe a hardscrabble landscape streaked with violence that, in Rash's telling, is graphic but never gratuitous . . . These superbly suspenseful stories evoke a world of hurt, but what makes them so deeply satisfying is that they enlarge our capacity for empathy.'' --Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

''Elegantly sophisticated work . . . Mr. Rash certainly knows how to rivet attention.'' --New York Times, praise for the author

''One of the foremost chroniclers of that mythic uber-America known as the South.'' --Washington Post, praise for the author

''[Rash's] starkly beautiful prose has mapped the heart and soul of southern Appalachia in a way few writers of his generation can match.'' --Atlanta Journal-Constitution, praise for the author

Each and all of the selections in SOMETHING RICH AND STRANGE should be savored slowly and reread.
By Bookreporter
If this was a perfect world, there would be a book by Ron Rash in the home of every reading family in the United States. Actually, given the man’s output --- five novels, four volumes of poetry and several short story collections --- a dedicated shelf would be more appropriate. I was reminded of how he towers above many of his contemporaries when I began reading SOMETHING RICH AND STRANGE, a very generous collection of 34 of his short stories. Thirty-two are culled from previously published collections, while the remaining two are seeing publication in book form for the first time.

Rash is an author’s author. His stories, set in the American South along a timeline that begins during the Civil War and stretches through this afternoon, are shot through with a pristine and often deadly beauty that deserve to be preserved under glass as sterling examples to the fledgling writer and veteran author of how the task, duty and, yes, privilege of storytelling is properly done.

Rash, whose work has earned multiple academic and literary awards, writes primarily of the poor. These are victims of whim and circumstance, and those whose lives are changed forever by a moment’s impulse built upon the shifting sands of poor judgment. The results, more often than not, are stark and unyielding. I have a well-thumbed edition of Rash’s NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY, a collection of short stories that I always keep at the ready. A number of the stories in SOMETHING RICH AND STRANGE are taken from that collection, including the title story, about the lives changed by a young girl’s fateful swim in a fast-moving creek. I have read the story about 15 times over the years, and did so again here. I know what happens, yet I kept hoping somehow that the result would be different this time --- and still screamed when it was not.

“Hard Times,” which opens this wondrous collection, is very faintly a mystery of sorts, and a tragedy from beginning to end. The last words of the story, which is set against the stark southern poverty of the Great Depression and deals with a seemingly minor theft, will haunt you until the end of your days. Time and again, Rash hits that sweet spot where language is most beautiful and events are most painful. He also throws in just a bit of lagniappe to set it off and make it memorable. Such is the case in “Lincolnites,” which, as the title might suggest, is set during the closing days of the U.S. Civil War. A woman waiting for her soldier husband to return home finds herself confronted with a rough and dangerous choice. What is going to happen is almost obvious; it is the manner in which it occurs, in addition to Rash’s wonderful telling of the tale, that sticks in one’s mind.

Not all of the stories are entirely tragic. Some are bittersweet. In “Love and Pain in the New South,” a husband and wife on the brink of divorce contemplate each other across a kitchen table, with divorce papers creating a barrier between them, that the husband tries one last time to breach. And there is a bit of droll humor in “The Night the New Jesus Fell to Earth,” in which a shady used car dealer intersects advertising with Christ’s passion to create an almost unthinkable new low. Most of the stories, though, are distilled in sadness, particularly “The Corpse Bird,” in which the knowledge of folklore gleaned from a man’s past is utilized to save a little girl’s life. Possibly. We’ll never know.

Do I have a favorite story from SOMETHING RICH AND STRANGE? I might answer “No.” That’s not entirely accurate; it keeps changing, and so quickly that there is no point in mentioning one over another. Each and all of the selections in this volume should be savored slowly and reread. And if someone is looking to make a dramatic television anthology of one-episode stories, there are 34 here with which you can start.

Spectacular.

Something Rich and Strange is Ron Rash's latest collection of short stories. He expertly captures the hardscrabble life and physical landscape of North Carolina, often in the region of Boone. Each story is unique, poignant and never ordinary. These vignettes of ordinary people living on the cusp of folklore and modernity have captured my heart and imagination.

Most of these stories aren't new; I've already read many in Nothing Gold Can Stay, but I have found that they stick with me long afterwards I’m done reading. While reading this particular collection several themes resonated deeply with me: stories set during the Civil War with the beautiful yet savage imagery (“Lincolnites”, “Where the Map Ends”, “The Dowry”); stories which portray the horrors of Methamphetamines (“The Ascent”, “Back of Beyond”, “Those Who Are Dead Are Only Now Forgiven”); and stories that reveal how one decision can have devastating effects (“Night Hawks”, “Into the Gorge”, ”Falling Star”).

My favorite story from Rash continues to be “The Trusty” about the escape of a chain gang prisoner. The ambiguous ending continues to haunt me today.

I've read a couple of Rash’s novels, but I prefer his short stories where I believe he really shines.

Tragic is as tragic does
By Uncle Long Hair
I find the stories reasonably engaging and the writing is sparse and efficient. The dialogue is well-written and reflects mannerisms of the Appalachian culture, ranging from Civil War era to the present, that is the backdrop for the stories.

However the writing is not as rich in historical detail as for example Charles Frazier's (i.e. "Cold Mountain") and does not really transport me there. There is so much to draw from in this culture and era that is uniquely American and evocative and I feel that Ron Rash's soup is a bit thin.

Each story has a different emotional "punch" and almost all of the stories are tragic in some way. While hard times and Appalachia go together like corn bread and beans, after reading the first 10 or so stories you know how the rest of them are going to end because they all have the same theme. With the endings nearly a forgone conclusion, I find that the writing itself doesn't always quite deliver.

Overall a very solid collection of American short stories and well worth the read.
