About the Author
Michael Lion spent the bulk of his youth voluntarily associating with people of whom his parents disapproved, in places they would not have been caught dead, working jobs that required strange hours and the occasional violation of constitutional rights. He cannot explain his attraction to these darker elements of society any more than heroin addicts can explain why they enjoy throwing up. All he knows for sure is, if you want happiness, spend your time in the daylight. But if you want honesty, it’s to be found after the sun goes down.

Intoxicating noir

Bird is a shady a mix of investigator, informant and bodyguard, well known in the darker corners of 1990s LA. He is accosted one night in a bar by a man looking for help to find his missing daughter. He is, apparently, a normal guy, which in Bird's world makes him distinctly abnormal. When the man is abruptly shot down, Bird decides to search for his daughter, although clearly all hope of a fee has died with the father.
Bird's status is ambiguous. He helps the police when it suits him, but he isn't an official informant. He deals with pimps and gangsters. He keeps his secrets. Even in his contact with officialdom he always somehow avoids giving up his real name.
Lion has been compared to Raymond Chandler and in many ways this is classic noir. There's a protagonist with a past. The writing is stylised and stylish. LA is lovingly recreated, from clubs to coffeehouses to the inside of a police cell. But it has its own style. The 90s setting gives it a disconcerting not-quite-contemporary feel - you think it's `now' till you're brought up short by the smoking in bars or the Polaroid shots which Bird relies on in his search for the missing woman.
Like Chandler, all the characters are sharply drawn, from DS Luzana Cazares, `owner of some incredibly ugly sport coats' to Jack, the vigilante who `came from a long line of people who'd stuck their hands out to stray dogs and wound up missing a finger'. Even the pimp has a philanthropic bent. It's dark but somehow both playful and poignant. Bird is a character you can care about.
The plot is fast and well crafted. The missing woman remains, in true noir style, enigmatic right to the end. Is she victim or villain? And just when all the loose ends are neatly tied, there's a twist in Bird's own life that perfectly sets up the next book. I can't wait.

The Forgotten Addiction

I found this book looking for new authors and it was a good read. The plot was well written and the characters are real. We meet Bird, a bit shady but likable. He knows some not so great people but is still known to help the police sometimes and he is likable. You care what happens to him and those he cares about. He is trying to find a missing girl and at times it seems the more he finds out the more lost he is. There are plenty of twists and turns that kept my interest until the end.
The only complaint I had with this book is I wish it would have noted this was the sequel to The Butcher's Granddaughter. This is a stand alone but things from the past are brought up and not having read the previous book I did not know what happened before. I think this could be more enjoyable book and I would have understood Bird and his thoughts and actions more if I would have read The Butcher's Granddaughter first.
I would recommend this to others, only saying you may want to read the other book first, but it is still a good read and a complete novel by itself.

Old School PI with a Twist

The Forgotten Addiction is a follow-up to Lion’s first book The Butcher’s Granddaughter. The book centers on Bird, a private eye as he attempts to find answers to the disappearance of a young girl. Every avenue he pursues in his quest seems to lead to the death of another person connected to the missing girl.
I liked the old school vibe that comes from the book. Bird is a unique character, a PI who isn’t cut from the traditional cloth, but still has the strong sense of justice that comes through as he risks his life to find the missing girl and find justice for her.
I thought the book was a good read, perhaps slow in spots, but one that kept me engaged. There is a dark tone to the book and fits into the catalogue New Pulp Press has put out in the past. Bravo to Lion on another quality book.
