A Chilling Tale of Love Gone Wrong

This book will chill you to the core. It is a real-life horror story. No demons or zombies, but a situation that has happened to many women ... maybe you or someone you love ... and will again.

Pamela Foster is an amazing writer, and this book is up to her usual high standards. Written in present tense, it conveys an immediacy you won't experience with other novels.

” The Perfect Victim starts out just that way

As a general rule, I don’t care much for psychological thrillers. They move at too slow a pace to earn the moniker thriller for me. We see lots of things engineered to endear us to the protagonist, but the action is a bit glacial for my taste. Plus, so many of them seem built around a premise that makes me want to take the protagonist by the collar and shake them, yelling into their face, “Can’t you see what the f&@k, is going on?!”

The Perfect Victim starts out just that way. Mary Brock is a single mother of an eight-year-old named Michael. Her best friend Anne “buys” her a deputy sheriff at a charity auction. He’s a little over six feet tall, slim, has wavy blond hair, and goes by the name Billy Joe Wilkins. Billy Joe promises Mary the perfect date.

Almost immediately, though, ominous signs begin appearing. Billy Joe calls her every night at home, every day at work. This last is more problematical because she works at a credit union where most of the employees are single mothers like herself, and the credit union isn’t exactly the gem of employers. Personal calls are strictly forbidden.

Too, Billy Joe doesn’t seem to get that dating for a single mother is tough. She’s on a very limited budget—at the book’s beginning she’s wrestling with her son wanting Nike Airs while she has to decide which clothes she can afford to wash this week—and can’t just take off on a whim, as Billy Joe seems to want her to do.

As the book progresses, these signs from Billy Joe become even more ominous, and it is quickly evident that he’s a controlling, abusive, dangerous man who uses his authority as a law enforcement officer to give him personal advantages in his quest to, for all practical purposes, own Mary while getting her to get rid of her son, who he refers to as “the kid.”

And now we arrive at the point that frustrates me about psychological thrillers: why can’t the protagonist see what’s happening? For me, it’s like the old joke about slasher movies: if you’re alone, in the dark, and weird things have been happening, why in the world are you investigating that noise? Why are you going up those stairs? For that matter, why’d you come out here camping in the first place?

The difference in The Prefect Victim is this: Mary finds a dark spot in her that responds to Billy Joe’s domineering ways. She likes the rough sex, likes it when he takes control, bringing her to the point where she’s afraid for her life, then treating her as if she’s a china doll that’ll break at the lightest touch. It seems that, when he perceives he’s frightened her, he backs off, reassures her it’s all fun and games.

With every mercurial rise and fall of Billy Joe’s temperament, Mary finds herself riding the same pattern of crests and troughs, a small boat on a large and violent ocean. She sees the problems but finds herself helpless to change what’s happening. He’s a complete and total ass, but the sex is like nothing she’s ever experienced before and is afraid she never will again. Does that make her shallow? Or does it make her human, just like the rest of us?

If I go any farther, I risk revealing some spoilers, so let me wrap it up this way: by the time you reach the end of Pamela Foster’s The Perfect Victim, you may find yourself wondering what you’d do in a similar situation, and if you’d go down the same dark paths Mary finds herself having to follow.

Because, in the end, what makes us human and vulnerable also lets us win in some horrible situations.

If you're going to shoot, shoot to kill.

Pamela Foster is a brilliant writer. Using intense internalization, terror dripping, fear-scented sense of place, and characterization far above the norm, Foster could write The Three Little Pigs and receive a Pulitzer.
The Perfect Victim is Foster's dark side come out to play and in the opinion of this writer, it's a side she should turn loose more often. Every single woman and mother can identify with the hero, Mary Brock. It's a man's world out there and all of us woman, at one time or another, are perfect victims. But don't piss us off!
Every woman should read this book.
Every woman should carry a gun and know how to use it. And every woman should shoot to kill.

Fascinated by the black magic as well as the white magic that characterizes the Voodoo religion, Eden becomes intrigued with the notion of zombies. At a Voodoo ceremony, she witness a possession and encounter an opportunity to steal a jar of the powder used to create a zombie. Eden’s burgeoning fascination with all things Voodoo comes to an end when Leila is forced to leave the family’s employ and return to Haiti because of the sexual advances of Eden’s adoptive father. Eden's journey becomes more tumultuous as tragedy strikes and her adoptive family disintegrates, forcing her onto the streets and into the arms of a disciple of Satan. The tension between good and evil is reminiscent of Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley series. The portrayal of the consequences of intense negative emotion on the outcome of a family drama is suggestive of Ian McEwan’s Atonement. Eden’s resilience, and her ability to emerge as a strong and resourceful adult inspite of a disastrous childhood brings to mind Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander. Among the many early readers of the book was R.W. Goodwin, Executive Producer of The X-Files. He reflected the opinion of many when he said, “The Stranger Box is a real page-turner. Eden is right. Rich philosophical exploration of the nature of good and evil

There is much more to this book than a rich storyline. Eden, a complex character, is the vehicle the author uses to explore the nature of good versus evil. Born into difficult circumstances, abandoned by a narcissistic mother, Eden's life is a series of challenges which teach her to stand up for herself. She rejects the role of child/victim and reinvents herself as a warrior woman. She learns to take matters into her own hands and to make her own rules. But this path pulls her into the angry role of avenger meting out of punishment to those who have crossed her. She also dabbles in amorality which breathes the same air as immorality. Along the way, she meets characters who explore man's historic quest to understand the nature of good versus evil. She draws insights from the various traditions: Christianity, Buddhism, the great philosophers and literary Giants, even from Satanism, shamanism and Voodoo. Eden wanders down paths that lead her into difficult realms but ultimately she allows the power of love to draw her away from the abyss. She finds a way to reconcile forgiveness with her need to be true to herself as warrior woman.

I highly encourage, even the casual reader seeking an intellectually stimulating novel to buy this - I can assure you that you will find it to be a captivating page turner. Brings about some very vivid images of a city that is near and dear to me as well, but I shall not give away any more about this hidden treasure in the literary world of fiction. Kory's work is very insightful, very practical, and a fun read. While sometimes we try to always "spin" Jesus as the one who carries the sheep with a hundred children running around him, always smiling, and always telling a funny story, Kory reminds us we need to stop, engage ourselves in the teachings of Jesus even when they are quite challenging to our preconceived notions, and allow him to transform us and our misconceptions.

Thought-provoking, stirring, funny and grabs you by the shoulders and gives you a good shake. Rev. Wilcoxson is very opoen, brutally honest and humble - so easy to relate to and not high-brow. The perfect time of year to read this book as we enter Lent and Holy Week. I highly recommend it as a study guide for class sessions or simply uplifting ones mind, heart and awareness to the true Jesus.

Fantastic job by Bolzoni. Just finished Carl Russo's True Crime Travel Guide, so the bar was set high before I commenced reading this one. Throughout the book the courtroom testimony and pentiti interviews, a lot of which have never been translated, are fascinating and at times heartfelt. The pentiti can often get very emotional when discussing their past crimes whether in the court or during interviews. A lot of this book is filled with drama, be it in the courtroom or some small Sicilian town where everyone's emotions are running high. A lot of up to date information as well, Salvatore Lo Piccolo, Gianni Nicchi, Antonio Rotolo, Cuffaro, Cina, and Gaetano Riina are mentioned. You can read about many stories from mafiosi who have repented. For example a chapter is about Gaspare Di Maggio who repented against his paesani, and then they started killing his family members due to his collaboration, then Di Maggio goes into the protection program, and returns to his hometown of San Giuseppe Jato and starts killing local towns people he feels responsible for the murders of his family. That's one of many dramatic stories filled in the book.
A lot of quotes are from the Calderone family from Catania probably used from Pino Arlacchi's great book "Men of Dishonor."

This is a great story of struggle, and finding your way through so much adversity. Also of understanding who brought you through all that you've been through. It was no body but God, and it shows that He apparently has great plans for this young woman. I wish her true story (#trustory) will inspire others and help them get on the right track.
