The Stranger Box, by Pamela Cuming

Set in New York City and Los Angeles between August 1999 and November 2001, The Stranger Box is a fast-paced psychological thriller. It is the story of a mother and a daughter caught like two white dwarf stars in separate orbits, destined to collide. Though she does everything in her considerable power to insure the child never finds out who she is, the vain and self-obsessed Katherine Blair is unable to change the course of her destiny or evade Eden, the resourceful daughter whose pursuit is fueled by the desire for revenge and the determination to steal the family that has been denied her. Eden’s sometimes tortured and always tumultuous journey is the focal point of this story of abandonment and revenge. Her character and beliefs regarding right and wrong, and good and evil are influenced not only by her Jewish adoptive mother, but by their housekeeper, Leila, a young Voodoo priestess from Haiti. It’s Leila who gives Eden her first Stranger Box, and teaches her to keep it filled with things that will protect her from others who would do her harm. Under her tutelage, Eden learns to worship the Iwa, and begins to master the art of using plants and herbs to heal and to punish. Fascinated by the black magic as well as the white magic that characterizes the Voodoo religion, Eden becomes intrigued with the notion of zombies. At a Voodoo ceremony, she witness a possession and encounter an opportunity to steal a jar of the powder used to create a zombie. Eden’s burgeoning fascination with all things Voodoo comes to an end when Leila is forced to leave the family’s employ and return to Haiti because of the sexual advances of Eden’s adoptive father. Eden's journey becomes more tumultuous as tragedy strikes and her adoptive family disintegrates, forcing her onto the streets and into the arms of a disciple of Satan. The tension between good and evil is reminiscent of Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley series. The portrayal of the consequences of intense negative emotion on the outcome of a family drama is suggestive of Ian McEwan’s Atonement. Eden’s resilience, and her ability to emerge as a strong and resourceful adult inspite of a disastrous childhood brings to mind Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander. Among the many early readers of the book was R.W. Goodwin, Executive Producer of The X-Files. He reflected the opinion of many when he said, “The Stranger Box is a real page-turner. Eden is right. Trust no one.”To tell more would destroy the tension and ruin the surprise.

Review
Five Stars! A real gripping thriller...draws the reader right in and envelops them in the story, not letting go until it's over. I found myself right in there, living Eden's life and was disappointed that it had to end! Excellent story, brilliantly written and a great storyline.  Readers' Favorite Reviewer

"While this story isn't the most cheerful, it's hard to deny the fact that the author successfully pulls you into Eden's world and shows the reader the good, the bad, and the downright ugly parts of human life. Cuming forces the reader outside of their comfort zone, making this a compelling and thought-provoking read." 4 stars  The Self Publishing Review

The power of this book--an undeniable page-turner--comes from the sheer unpredictability of the storyline. The author incorporates a wide variety of narrative elements (Voodoo, Buddhism, the nature of evil, abandonment, abuse, etc.) that leads readers to a virtual precipice at novel's end--and the last plot twist pushes them off of that cliff.
The writing style is intelligent, insightful, and intimate; Eden becomes real in these pages, and her painful rebirth is both heartrending and heart-warming.

About the Author
After graduating from Smith College, Pam embarked on what would become multi-faceted career during which she would advise leaders of American corporations, Wall Street financiers, directors of non-profits, and medical practitioners on the human dimensions of their enterprises. Now, she is enjoying living on a mountaintop in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, and sharing her insights through the printed word. As is apparent in her new novel, The Stranger Box, she enjoys creating characters who are courageous, resourceful and, true to human nature, embody both good and evil. Though brave and bold, her heroines are capable of creating their own worst obstacles. Though gallant, her heroes can be stubborn, narrow-minded and blind to the impact they are having on themselves and others. Regardless, they are willing to take risks even when the stakes are high and the odds are against them. They share her belief as expressed by Helen Keller, "Life is an adventure or nothing at all."  Learn more and communicate with her on her website: pamcuming.com

Rich philosophical exploration of the nature of good and evil
By Steven Staves
There is much more to this book than a rich storyline. Eden, a complex character, is the vehicle the author uses to explore the nature of good versus evil. Born into difficult circumstances, abandoned by a narcissistic mother, Eden's life is a series of challenges which teach her to stand up for herself. She rejects the role of child/victim and reinvents herself as a warrior woman. She learns to take matters into her own hands and to make her own rules. But this path pulls her into the angry role of avenger meting out of punishment to those who have crossed her. She also dabbles in amorality which breathes the same air as immorality. Along the way, she meets characters who explore man's historic quest to understand the nature of good versus evil. She draws insights from the various traditions: Christianity, Buddhism, the great philosophers and literary Giants, even from Satanism, shamanism and Voodoo. Eden wanders down paths that lead her into difficult realms but ultimately she allows the power of love to draw her away from the abyss. She finds a way to reconcile forgiveness with her need to be true to herself as warrior woman.

> Each character of the Stranger Box is carefully crafted to represent a metaphor for the various aspects of good and evil. The storyline hooks us in by using modern situations to illustrate abstract ethical conundrums. We can relate. At times the coincidences seem improbable, but these are forgiven when we remember this book is really a mythical quest for answers to some of life's big questions. Eden's journey raises much food for thought. Bravo!

Compelling & Captivating....
By MY
An extremely compelling and subconsciously stirring read. I highly encourage, even the casual reader seeking an intellectually stimulating novel to buy this - I can assure you that you will find it to be a captivating page turner. Brings about some very vivid images of a city that is near and dear to me as well, but I shall not give away any more about this hidden treasure in the literary world of fiction. Better still - buy this as stocking stuffers for this coming holiday season - I have already and will sure to surprise my friends. I hope you find it as gratifying as I have....

--An original and highly imaginative narrative

Eden, the canny protagonist of the story, confronts her orphaned past. Resolute and resourceful, her quest to exact revenge against her mother for abandoning her as an infant, leads to intriguing encounters and extraordinary entanglements ( Dickens would approve).

--Suspenseful and surprising 'till the last page
