Michael Clemons (affectionately known as 'Big Mike') is an internationally renowned drummer and producer. A native of Stratford, CT, Mike got his start in music through the support of his mother, Pastor Rosa Clemons, and their church. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, Mike played relentlessly in church, expressing his faith and love for God musically, and believing that more opportunities would eventually come, if he stayed grounded in his faith.
As an entrepreneur, together with his wife Cheryl 'Coko' Clemons, Mike has launched a clothing line as well. In terms of personal health advocacy, Mike has proven through his own hard work that it's possible to gain and maintain a healthy lifestyle, no matter your age or occupation. After several years of being overweight, Mike has lost over 100 pounds and kept it off through a lifestyle change of diet and exercise. His success in becoming physically fit has even led to opportunities to incorporate physical health lessons and demonstrations into his drum and production clinics around the globe.

I feel as though this book really takes you on a journey through the life of Mr. Clemons. It speaks of times with him and others in ways that you can see as you're reading them. It spoke also of situations that excite you as you read about them. And finally, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the "Love Story" embedded within the Journey in which his life is on. After, you've read it once, it will make you think, and quite possibly READ IT AGAIN.

You don't have to be a musician to enjoy Mike's story!

Although Mike Clemons is a critically-acclaimed drummer, I'd say that drumming only makes up about 1/4 of the story. This book is as much about Mike Clemons the brother, entrepreneur, friend and (eventual) husband and father as it is about Mike the musician.

If you're looking for a self-pitying tale of woe about a former fat kid who socks it to his enemies, this is not the book for you. You won't find Mike bemoaning his fatherless childhood or blaming playground bullies for his (sporadic) knucklehead behavior. Nor will you find a name-dropping braggart filled with juicy stories about life on the road, or constantly patting himself on the back about what a great drummer he is. Rather, Mike tells of the support he received from his family and friends, who encouraged his love of music and understood his (good) hustler's spirit.

As Mike the boy becomes Mike the man, you find yourself hoping that Mike asks out the girl he likes...chin-checks the bully making fun of his weight...makes it to his high school graduation...scores a date with the reticent, golden-voiced singer with the crazy nails...gets his health straightened out before it's too late. This is a great book that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys seeing nice guys finishing first.

Awesome testimony ! I recommend this book to the world because we are all battling with some sort of issue and some people think that success comes easy and we want to take the straight road BUT God has a different plan to shape and mold you ... people fail to realize when there's a calling on your life you are hit with all sorts of stones and it makes life a bit harder but when you believe in the most high and follow gods will he will fix and place everything you need in your path if you just obey and have strong faith ! Wonderful message and I feel most people can relate because a lot of people suffer from self insecurity's and you won't know how to love until you can love yourself and have god's love in you.God Bless

This is a good mystery. The story is well thought out and moves right along, but what I liked most were the characters. They are well drawn and people you enjoy spending time with. A very enjoyable book.

Hex Fans Won't Be Disappointed

MINOR Spoilers:

Judging from DC Comics' synopsis of this book, I was expecting a full re-telling of Hex's origin, but that is not the case, here, which is GOOD, because this writing team already told that story (in the "Origins" trade). This one does dive into his past a bit more, but instead of focusing on his abusive father as much, his dying mother is the focus, along with Hex learning for the first time that he has a half brother. It's interesting to see Hex through his brother's eyes, who shares Hex's blood, but is on a completely different path as a preacher.

The book is good, and any recent Hex fan, like myself, will enjoy the story, for sure. However, the art is not for everyone. DeZuniga is Jonah Hex's co-creator and original artist, but I was never a fan of his work, personally. It's too "sketchy" for my taste. Some of his closeups are fantastic, though. So he's quite talented, but for the most part, I'm not a fan. Check out DC Comics' June 3rd post on their blog, The Source for a preview.

Bottom Line: Although I'm not crazy about the art, the writing is still great, and if you're a fan, you should have this in your collection.

Good story, but....

Good story but what has happened to the art? We seem to have gone backwards from the 1970's WEIRD WESTERN TALES to almost a sketchpad rendering of the characters. Give me the old days when they tried to make things look realistic. Still enjoyed the story though.

No Way Back...One Sure success

The `return' of Tony De Zuniga to Jonah Hex is remarkable. Not only has Jonah Hex hit the big screen, but also with that exposure, Hex has developed a significant following too! Hollywood has buzzed with the casting, the story, and the buzz that the heroine created with her portrayal of the love interest.
That brings us to No Way Back. Continuing Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti's run on our anti-hero, they have given readers a back story that is very compelling (and dark too). We have all wondered why Jonah is why he is, now we know. An abusive father, and an abandonment by his mother, will create a certain bitterness in anyone. Add the tomahawk to his face, and the process is complete.

They say that our eyes mirror our souls, and our demeanor reveals our inner `sense'. Jonah Hex is clearly a troubled man. His brother, Joshua Dazzleby, raised by his mother AFTER her abandonment of Jonah, has turned to the Lord for comfort. Both preacher and lawman, he rules Heavens' Gate with grace and strength. Jonah, while bringing the body of his mother for burial, unsettles the town yet prepared them for El Papagayo and his revenge against Jonah Hex's father. This time, the sins of the father are revisited upon the children and those around them. How will Jonah prepare the citizens of peaceful Heaven's Gate for the murderers? Is Hex blood thicker than water?
Firstly, I am pleased to finally learn who Jonah is , and how he became this way. Secondly, the art of Mr DeZuniga (for 140 pages) is awesome! Storywise, Gray and Palmiotti are consistant, yet portray a Hex that Mr Fleischer was unable to in his day. Our version of Hex is that of a man ruled by passions, temptations, and bounties. This is a violent book. This is a disturbing book in many ways. Yet, this is the Jonah Hex that modern readers have resonated with, post 911. As an older reader, I enjoyed the Fleischer/DeZuniga/Ayers tales yet find something that makes me want to read this book. It might be the art, it might be the glimmer of a man that can find redemption yet, or it might be the fact that Jonah Hex is the vigilante we want to be when read about those who prey on our innocent. Imagine a drug dealer supplying kids right in front of Jonah...can't imagine it would be for long. Or, those who beat their wives and children repeatedly...
Once, I suggested a title for a Tim Truman book, I don't Draw Pretty, but Gritty....that describes Jonah Hex. On a side note, even his name suggests a wanderer. Biblically speaking, Jonah ran from God and finally found his peace, perhaps the `Hex' in our case now, is that he will never find peace...Only Mr Fleischer and Joe Orlando might know.
Highly recommended.

An easy-to-follow handbook

This book clearly describes how to set up your sewing machine and begin free-motion stitching, but more than that, it's a guide to enjoying the process. Kimberly Davis begins at the beginning, no previous experience required. She encourages her reader to ignore their "inner critic" and to practice the stitching exercises "with abandon and give yourself the freedom to make an unsightly mess" until you become comfortable with the techniques and with your own style. It was very liberating to realize I indeed have a 'style!' The book is printed in black and white, which is fine for the lessons, but I would have loved to see a few color photos of her finished quilts.

This book is informative, fun to read, and helped me hone the necessary techniques I needed to be successful and produce something worth looking at.

I have read other books on free-motion quilting, and watched a bunch of videos from a bunch of people. I have learned something every time.

But this book shines above them all. The author looks at quilting not just as using the machine, but as using the machine as an extension of being a normal human. She takes into account the way people learn, and the steps you need to start from the beginning and get better. She helps you overcome fears--really. She has many, many tips for making your quilting look better.

I actually did the exercises in the book because they were interesting and fun to do. And they actually helped make my free-motion quilting better! Thank you, Kimberly Davis.

Very well written -- hilarious!! i can actually picture my cats doing these things!!! Plan on getting the follow-up to this book.

Good for Cat Lovers

I got these as gifts for cat lovers. They loved the book. To me the book seems like a clever approach - to see through the eyes of cats. I don't know if anyone else has done this before, probably - but Vernon Coleman does a very good job of this. It makes you think of the cats' side of the world. He knows cats.

A fun read for cat lovers

Very fun... amazing that some people thought it was actually the CAT who wrote it. ;) Pretty darned enjoyable if you are a cat lover.
