A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, by Barbara Unkovic

Barbara Unkovi? is a keen and perceptive observer of the human condition, as her previous award-winning books, including, Moon Walking and Weeds in The Garden of Eden have revealed. A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing could very well have been called 'Prickles amongst the Roses' as Barbara observations here surely suggest. Shortly after the new millennium began, Barbara and her husband Denis underwent the most dramatic sea-change possible. The couple left Australia's Sunshine Coast, their very comfortable lifestyle, and their flourishing coffee importing and roasting business for an entirely different life in a far-off corner of the world. Following Barbara's desire to examine her Croatian heritage in depth, they moved to her grandfather's birthplace, the tiny picturesque village of Ra?i?e on the small island of Korcula off the coast of Croatia. The idyllic appearance of this most beautiful seaside village can be likened to a wonderful rose, an absolutely stunning flower set against the backdrop of the shimmering blue Adriatic. However, this rose has thorns, many, many sharp, vicious thorns to impale the unwary. The rawness of the war has left deep scars in the Croatian psyche. The entrenched communist mindset, extreme nepotism, out of control officialdom and just plain deeply ingrained distrust including fear of foreigners, even fellow Croats from outside the village itself, taints the timeless beauty of this place that Barbara and Denis so wanted to call home. After seven years, the couple no longer live in Ra?i?e, and this book, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing may explain in part why they chose to move on, and perhaps it also offers the reader a cautionary tale of what to expect in any so-called paradise. It's not all doom and gloom however, there is fun, love, great eccentricity to be found here and Barbara, who is an excellent restaurant-trained chef has included some of her favourite recipes from Croatia and her Adriatic and Mediterranean neighbours. A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing is a funny, sometimes disturbing but very entertaining read - yet another excellent slice of the life from Barbara Unkovi?, whose stature as a writer and keen observer of our many very human foibles, continues to grow with each and every book.

Unkovic’s best work to date
By Just R
A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing is by far Unkovic’s best work to date. She has honed her voice and clearly takes the reader through the trials and delights of life in Croatia and France. I particularly liked her sections on Hvar, Mostar, and France. She is extremely open with her feelings and insights, which allows the reader to join in on the experiences with Unkovic.

This was a delight to read.

I just bought some rocket from the market and hope to try out her salad and bread recipes soon.

An easy read and a good book
By zevonsbro
This book is a follow-up to the author’s very entertaining Weeds in the Garden of Eden, which I recommend reading first so as to learn the history and many of the characters involved in this story.
As enjoyable a book as Weeds was, Mrs. Unkovic outdid that effort with the sequel. A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing is a surprisingly entertaining jaunt that changes direction frequently and then subtly zeros in on the book’s main target, the decision to leave or stay on the Croatian island where the couple has spent the last several years living in paradise. Or is it?
The author gives several comical, though almost disturbing accounts of the interaction between the neighboring villagers and the outsiders who are trying to adapt to the new environment. Laughter ensues until the daily grind of the local mentality is no longer funny. A tough decision has to be made and the decision-making process is complicated by bureaucracy and sentimental emotions. Will Barbara and Denis abandon what they’ve worked so hard to achieve for greener pastures? Will they forgo their adopted lifestyle to try another before it becomes too late in life? Not only you discover the answers to these questions, you’ll meet some hysterical characters and enjoy some good laughs along the way. A fun read for all, and the many recipes of the fine Dalmatian cuisine the author includes makes this book a ‘can’t miss.’ This book is also an important read to any westerner considering a move to Croatia and the Adriatic coast.

In that respect this is a sad tale, essentially one of a lost dream
By gshanks
Following on from Weeds in the Garden of Eden, the first book on her Croatian experience, author Barbara Unković continues to offer her wry and often troubled observations on life in a traditional Croatian village.
Seven years as residents in the village of Račišće on the idyllic island of Korčula certainly gives Barbara’s voice both the note of authenticity and definitely the right to comment freely on the sometimes bewildering experiences she and husband Denis shared.
The reader will feel the sheer frustration as Barbara’s dream of living in what at first appeared to be her ancestral paradise turn to dust. In that respect this is a sad tale, essentially one of a lost dream, however, Barbara’s wry humour and palpable sense of astonishment at many of the incidents, people and customs she encountered lifts Wolf far beyond it simply being a tale of woe.
Food plays and important part in Croatian life and indeed those of former restaurateurs, Barbara and her husband, Denis. In an interesting and rather tasty counterpoint to Barbara’s tales, which often revolve around meals or the production, or indeed protection of produce, this keen cook and baker has included both traditional Croatian recipes and several of her own personal favourites. A mixing of the sweet and sometimes sour.
As with Weeds in the Garden of Eden, A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing is an eye-opener with a large CAUTION sign there for anyone contemplating a move to a country where the spectre of the former communist regime still looms large in the national psyche. Family histories (including Barbara’s own), political rivalries, archaic traditions, sheer stupidity coupled with pig-headed bureaucracy, and down-right nastiness are all part of the mix and no one or nothing is spared from Barbara’s pen.
With heavy hearts, Barbara and Denis bade farewell to Croatia in 2012 and in Barbara’s own words as she left the village she loved… ‘I find myself incapable of turning and looking back…. I bid Croatia, the tainted paradise, albeit the country of my roots, a final farewell and move on.’
