About the Author
Marcia McMullen is a writer, researcher and author. Inspired by outstanding mentors she became fascinated by the reach of key relationships and connecting elements and their influence on the personal narrative. Her first book, Because You Believed in Me: Mentors and Protégés Who Shaped Our World (Andrews McMeel 2002) is a collection of mentoring stories from history. Those rich stories from history were the inspiration for collecting contemporary stories.

Inspiring others through mentoring and storytelling

“Because You Believed in Me” is one of those books you buy and then you keep buying to give to friends, co-workers, interns, and family. It’s that inspiring, and a sweet little book.
In her second book (the first equally precious!) Ms. McMullen has reached out too many contemporary role models today: writers, artists, industry leaders and innovative disruptors, and asked them to share a story of mentoring from their life. I began reading it with a curiosity, and then began to see similar patterns in my life. This kind of storytelling is what we need more of – inspiring and humble.
An inspiring story of Bill Gates Sr., who was mentored by a childhood friend and his father, who taught both the boys lessons through boy scouts and life-work, of patience in being present as a young man, doing your job well and expanded the idea of mentorship to be not just the typical 1x1 guiding relationship, but as a simple person who made a difference in people’s lives. His mentor was a visionary, who had great ideas and made them happen brining all the “the boys” long as witness. Another favorite of mine, is Richard Saul Wurman (whom I’ve admired for decades as a young artist and innovator myself). He shared his story also of many mentors, and called out how a lack of judgement from all and permission to be curious gave him a way to navigate his amazing thoughts and life seeing how everything connects with everything else. This book is one I find myself reaching for over and over again, when I have a moment to be thoughtful, and when I want to inspire others to mentor themselves, or look for the mentors in their lives.

As Relevant Today as Ever: Wonderful, Historical Lessons on Mentorship

Mentorship is not a new concept – the idea of a person being open to the lessons handed down from great “teachers” is age old. As such, this wonderful collection of mentoring stories from history is both informative and inspiring. Because You Believed in Me is a perfect book for life-long learners interested in history, mentoring others and being mentored -- read it yourself; share it with your colleagues, family and friends!

A great collection of inspiring stories!

This is wonderful companion to Marcia's previous book and continues the journey of inspiring stories that underscore the importance of mentorship. Having been involved in several mentor programs in my career, this book is a "must have" for my bookshelf. The stories are both inspiring and impressive. It's the perfect book to inspire anyone who is interested in becoming a mentor.
