Profoundly, yet simply, relieving.

Recently I read something by John Piper in which he made the statement that books don't change us, but that paragraphs and sentences do. I thought that was an interesting thing to note and something that definitely rang true for me in reading this book by Tim Chester. I walked away with all of the encouragement I ever needed to pray in one paragraph in the Introduction of this book. No, it didn't hurt me a bit to read all 171 pages which elaborated on the main point he had to make but I do feel like my prayer life was profoundly changed in that first paragraph. Here's what he said:
"The fact is that the secret of great praying has nothing to do with human effort or skill. Plenty of people would like to think it does because they want to make prayer and achievement. They want to be able to think of themselves as great pray-ers.
But surprising as it may seem, the secret of great praying is this. you need to know three things about God:
1. God the Father loves to hear us pray.
2. God the Son makes every prayer pleasing to God.
3. God the Holy Spirit helps us as we pray."
The words were like a thunder clap in my heart.
I can pray. And so can you. Anytime, any place, with any language you have available to you. Your imperfections are overlooked in light of His perfections. Prayer is a gift and I now, for the first time ever, gratefully receive it.
I can do nothing but recommend this book. If you struggle with prayer at all, I suggest this title to you.

Prayer is worship

With so many prayer books out there and methods on prayer you may ask what makes this one worth my time and investment. Instead of coming up with a new method and lists of what to do, it leads you to the reason for prayer. What prayer is and what it is not. Prayer is worship and a gift in participating in the divine mission to defeat Satan and rescue the lost. Many times prayer becomes something we achieve instead of being what is designed to be …a child depending on the Father.
The focus of this study is the work of Christ and the relationship between the trinity in prayer. God the Father loves to hear us pray-God the Son makes every prayer pleasing to God-God the Holy Spirit helps us as we pray. Prayer is the embodiment or outworking of the gospel. (Kindle loc. 411) We do not grow in prayer but something new and better, but by understanding the gospel better. The better we understand, the more our prayers will be aligned with God’s will. Prayer with the trinity is an invitation to share in the pleasure of the triune God, the delight of the Father in the Son and the Son in the Father through the Holy Spirit.
Prayer can also be difficult and many times we do not understand the difficulties we face. Do we know what drive us? Where our desires lie? Do we think prayer is worth it?
The one insight I received in this is a better understanding of the sovereignty of God and prayer. The question of my part and God’s sovereignty, this is something I have always struggled with. I have to say this is one of the best books on prayer that I have read.

Good content, poor formatting

Good foundational content for understanding prayer. The formatting on the Kindle version is off, which makes it difficult to read at times. For example any bulleted or numbered points get bulleted or numbered twice. I'd recommend the paper version then for someone looking to learn more about why we pray and how to do it.
