I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this little book. I feel I could have written it myself. Verna Cole Mitchell is a few years younger than I but captures memories of her childhood so perfectly in this book that I simply couldn't stop reading it once I started. We grew up in that era when one-room school houses were common, when churning ice-cream was the most exciting event of the week, when our mothers ironed our starched dresses and fathers hated to clean out the cellar because "they'd just get all messed up again anyway!" Verna, in free verse, brings to light some vignettes of her childhood that produce a loud guffaw from her readers, simply because we've all experienced the embarrassment of our brothers, the strict parenting by loving mothers and fathers, yet the overwhelming sense of being cared for, protected, and prodded to do better after each report card. This small book would make a PERFECT stocking stuffer for Christmas, a great gift for a friend needing to smile in a hospital bed, a grandparent who still longs for "the good old days of yesteryear." It has something for everyone, regardless of age, and it's inexpensive price makes it possible to give a copy to everyone who likes to remember their childhood with fondness. As an English teacher all her adult life, Verna brings to all of her books the professional quality we all expect and enjoy. I ADORE this little book!

A fun read!

The Bible says, "A merry heart does good like medicine." Well, you will definitely have a merry heart after reading Verna's book, "Sipping Memories from A Cup of Childhood." I found myself laughing aloud over and over again. As a "pastor's kid" myself, I could relate to many of her stories. Thanks, Verna, for the laughs and for "jogging my memory" with your book. I will look forward to more!

a real live 1940's American girl

Enjoy these snapshots from a real live American girl growing up in the 1940's. Watch her roller skate like Sonja Henie, experience her alarm when war times sirens sound, sit cross-legged on the kitchen floor and eat juicy tomatoes while her Mom cans victory garden produce. This 1940's American girl is a preacher's daughter with a heart of gold. Her name is Verna Jean.
