What a beautifully written story this is

What a beautifully written story this is! Mandy and her autistic son have been abandoned by her husband. She returns to her home in Louisiana to help her family run the family business, a struggling B&B. I love all the characters in this book. The story draws you in from the first page. The tender way her son and family respond to each other is sweet. Bridger, her first love is also in town for a friend's wedding and to help train mistreated horses. And at just the right moment, her ex-husband shows up threatening to sue for custody. Each character in the story has to trust that God will work everything out for the best. This is a heartwarming story that will make you smile and will bring tears to your eyes.

Delightful Read!

What a delightful read! I was pulled into this story line and the lives of the characters from the very first page. The dialog was written so well that I could all but hear the character's words and their Cajun accents. It is a wonderfully told story of love lost and second chances. The author also tells a touching story that centers around a precious autistic little boy named Daniel. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review. It's a wonderful read not only for the Christmas season but for any time of the year. I definitely look forward to reading other books by this author.

A Cajun Christmas Miracle is a wonderful book. I love Christmas and books about the Christmas season. Louisiana is also one of my favorite setting for a book. I was pulled into this book from the very first page. The characters are believable and the book is very well written. This is my first book by this author, but I look forward to reading more. I highly recommend this book If you are looking for a good clean Christian romance. I received a copy of the book for my honest review. Thanks Marian P. Merritt.

About the Author
My fabulous adventure in Corsica as a teenager has percolated in my brain for decades and has inspired my second novel MOTHER TONGUE, which is available in both Kindle and paperback versions on Amazon. MOTHER TONGUE is upmarket women's fiction with suspense and thriller elements set amid the danger and chaos of the separatist movement in modern-day Corsica. The back story is based on that wild adventure I had at nineteen involving, among other things, trying to sneak two Foreign Legionnaires off of Corsica! My first novel DEGREES OF OBSESSION was published in a Kindle earlier in 2014. The paperback version was first published back in 2005 and has been recently revised. I was born in Chicago, Illinois to a father who was off a few days later to fight the good fight in as a naval officer in WWII and a mother who had graduated from the University of Chicago in Political Science in 1937--quite the feminist before her time. I grew up in La Jolla, California where I mastered the art of body surfing with my girlfriends and the art of the writing from my honors English teacher. I graduated near the top of my class in high school and went on to Stanford University to major in chemistry. Love took priority over Bunsen burners, and I switched to a psychology major, which allowed time to pursue my first real romance (the back-story for "Degrees of Obsession"). I graduated from San Diego State in 1965 and garnered a Masters degree in 1968 and a Doctorate in Psychology in 1970 from the University of Illinois. Over the next forty years I worked as a psychologist. I retired from the nation's largest HMO in 2009 but have recently been lured out of Granny-dom to assume a position as a Mental Health Director of a health plan serving the Medi-Cal population in 14 northern CA counties. In 2001, I got bitten by the fiction and began taking writing classes and participating in professionally led critiquing groups. DEGREES OF OBSESSION was published in 2005. I was thrilled to be asked to promote my novel at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books in 2006 at UCLA. I am the mother two grown children and am devoted to my four grandchildren. I collect antique flamingoes and admit to having a neon flamingo in my bedroom, which makes it look like a pink bordello! I live in the San Francisco Bay area.

The plot is nicely paced, and it is very hard to stop ...

Mother Tongue is a fast-moving novel set in Corsica. The setting is richly described, and made me want to visit the island to see its incredible landscapes and villages first-hand. The plot is nicely paced, and it is very hard to stop reading once the story gets going. The dialogue and characters are very richly developed. All in all, a very nice read. I'm looking forward to more from Karen Stephen.

A great read. Originally intended to read during my fifteen minute breaks at work, I soon discovered that, if I wanted to keep my job, I would have to take this book home and read it because it is just so hard to put down. Wondering how the relationship between Liz and her protagonist, Scafani, would turn out kept me turning the pages. A very good read that does not disappoint.

About the Author
David L. Sloan launched his paranormal career in in 1996, founding one of North America’s first ghost tours in Key West, Florida. He has South Florida’s largest collection of haunted objects, authored a dozen books, studied Santeria and Voodoo, and has dealt first-hand with dark entities and spirit possession. Sloan was instrumental in Robert the Doll’s move from museum storage to permanent display and remains the authority on the haunted history of Key West and The Florida Keys. He is frequently featured on national television and is a regular on several paranormal radio programs. David lives in Key West and operates Sloan’s Ghost Hunt.

Get to know Robert, the real haunted doll

I have visited Robert the Doll at Fort East Martello Museum many times over the years and have heard many versions of his story. I appreciated the way that Mr. Sloan compiled all the rumors and put them up against the facts of Robert's and Gene's (and the entire Otto family) story to give us a complete picture of how a supernatural legend came to be. While Sloan treats his subject(s) with deference, you don't have to be a true believer to enjoy this book.

I subtracted a star because the photos are all in black and white. I suppose that could be because this book is printed on demand. Still, the photos of the gorgeous, historic Artist House in Key West and Robert in his original harlequin state would have had so much more impact had they been in color.

The Definitive Book on Robert

There’s a lot of misinformation on the Internet about Robert the Doll. Author David Sloan sets the story straight. Meticulously researched and written in an engaging and entertaining manner, this book is a complete treatment of one of the world’s most famous “haunted objects.” From the doll’s earliest origins to its current status at the Fort East Martello Museum, Sloan gives the reader a very interesting and satisfying record of Robert’s existence, all the while separating fact from fiction. The best thing is, the facts are just as disturbing, maybe more so, than the fiction. The book is loaded with photos not seen anywhere else, as well as letters to Robert from real people who have asked him to remove curses from their lives. Highly recommended for any fan of the paranormal and real-life mysteries.

The Best Haunted Book, Hand's Down

I am a Key West aficionado who has visited the island countless times over the years. Many times, my family and I have visited Robert at his current home at the East Martello Museum (and always asked his permission prior to taking his photograph) and we’ve been on multiple tours that have retold the stories of Robert and his legend and lore. I have always been fascinated by Robert’s history and I am quick to retell it to any new visitors and encourage a Ghost Hunt and a visit to the museum.

David Sloan has carefully put together the facts behind the myths that surround Robert and the Otto family. Robert’s physical being is thoroughly reviewed in detail. Then, Mr. Sloan walks the reader through Gene Otto’s childhood, how he likely received Robert and through his adulthood when he returned to Key West with his bride, Anne after an extended absence building his career as an artist. Reunited with his childhood doll companion, it was in Key West that rumors and gossip started swirling about Gene Otto and the strange things that seemed happen because of Robert.

The book is interspersed with current stories of strange, haunted occurrences relating to Robert the Doll as well as letters of apology TO Robert the Doll after people have experienced bad luck or relate being “cursed” after visiting him. The author also shares the unfortunate luck he had while trying to write the book. (Even I experienced some of Robert’s mischievousness when I didn’t write this review in a timely enough fashion)
If you love history, ghostly tales, the island of Key West or just reading a good story, I highly recommend this book! Just a word to the wise, never ever make fun of Robert. He doesn’t like it.

Lisa Bailey Bastian’s debut book is a hit!

If you are looking for a fast paced read while traveling or if you are looking for a good book to sweep you away on a rainy day, this is it. It’s amazing that this is the author’s first published book. It is well thought out and the story has a great flow to it. She describes the people and surroundings so well that I could see the story in my mind play out as I turned each page and the dialogue makes you feel like you are in the story itself. The only downside, if there is one, is that it was too short and I did not want the story to end so quickly. I can't wait to see what Lisa's next book is.

Suspenseful and interesting story. Not filled with a bunch of fluff just to add volume and delay the reader from getting to the next piece of the mystery. Very impressed with this first published work from the author. Definitely looking forward to reading more stories from Ms. Bastian.

About the Author
Although Pat Meece Davis is a seventh generation native of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, she has spent most of her adult life in State College, Pennsylvania, except for stints living in the Netherlands and Australia. A graduate of Western Carolina University, she attended graduate school at Penn State University, receiving Master’s and Ph.D. degrees. Because of her lifelong love of words, she turned to full-time fiction writing a few years ago. The Night the Dancing Stopped for young adults is the debut novel in The Nosy Chicks Mysteries series. In addition, two adult mysteries are in the editing process. Deadly Delivery to Amsterdam, a romantic mystery, is partially completed and is her first book to combine her love of writing with international travel. With her six children as adventurous traveling companions, they have visited many stunning locales on this beautiful planet. She is an active member of the North Carolina Writers’ Network (NCWN), Net-West division-NCWN, and the Writers' Guild of Western North Carolina (WGWNC).

The Nosy Chicks are brash and brave

Pat Davis must be a kid at heart. She takes us into the lives of three teenage girls who seem to be bent on solving a murder. Although set in modern day America, in the mountains of NC, this book reminds me of books I read when I was in middle school or high school. The characters, young and older, are fully believable. From the very beginning we become caught up in the escapades of the girls who are spying on young neighbors, newly weds, even though they know this is bad behavior on their part.. The book is for young adults but it held my interest and I recommend it for high school or older. Davis has made a great start into her novel-writing career.

A slightly more advanced Nancy Drew book for the modern teens

A young woman is murdered in an apartment building next to Amy's house. Amy, and her two best friends think of themselves as super sleuths. After all ... they did help solve a smaller robbery case. The local police chief thinks of their help as dangerous and tells them in no uncertain terms to mind their own business. Since Amy has aspirations of becoming an investigative reporter for a newspaper, she and her two BFF's ignore the chief's warning and put themselves in several life threatening situations. This is a fast moving book that makes the readers want to keep turning the pages.

Attacking Ideas for White in the Open Sicilian

Using 32 high-powered game--some classics from Tal and Spassky and some more recent--Yakovich introduces key attacking ideas in the Open Sicilian (1. e5 c5 2. Nf3 ... 3. d4). He presents the material in sections based on black's pawn structure, and within each section presents games that illustrate the key ideas. So the contents are organized like this:

1. Schevinengen Structure (black pawns on d6 and e6, white pawn on e4)
__1.1 Knight sacrifice on d5
__1.2 White pawns on e4/f4
__1.3 White pawns on e4/f3 (English Attack)
__1.4 White g pawn advances to g5 (Keres Attack)
2. Taimanov Structure (black pawns on d7 and e6, white pawns on e4 and f3)
3. Rauzer Structure (black pawns on c6, d5, and e6, white pawn on e4)
4. d6/e5 Structure (black pawns on d6 and e5)
__4.1 White pawns on e4/f3
__4.2 White pawns on e4/f4
5. Dragon Structure (black bishop on g7)
__5.1 Prophylactic advance of white g-pawn
__5.2 White castles long with bishop still on f1
__5.3 White develops bishop to c4 before castling long

Many of these chapters contain further sub-divisions; for example, chapter 4.1 (White pawns on e4/f3 vs. black pawns on d6/e5) covers these subjects:
* "Black creates piece pressure on the queenside, without advancing his a- and b-pawns"
* "Exploiting the weaknesses resulting from the advance of Black's queenside pawns"
* "Mutual pawn storms on the flanks"

Yakovich organizes his material to facilitate maximum learning. Each chapter starts with a summary of the white attacking ideas and the black counterattacking ideas, pointing out which games discuss which ideas. He then presents the games, weaving commentary on dozens of related games into his deep analysis. He typically analyzes all the way to the transition to the endgame (if there is one--many games end with resignation before move 30). The endgames, however, pass without commentary. Finally, he provides a few very helpful conclusions from the games; here's an example from the "knight sacrifice on d5" chapter:

"Regardless of the pawn structure, the knight sacrifice on d5 usually serves the following functions:
A) to remove the black pawn from e6 and so deprive the opponent of the possibility of neutralising the white bishops on d4 and d3 (Game 1), or just on d4 (Game 2), by means of ...e6-e5;
B) to organise a pawn storm on the kingside, with the support of these bishops;
C) to exploit the open e-file to include the heavy pieces in the attack on Black's king.

....

"The decision [on whether to secure the c3 knight's position by playing a2-a3] depends on the concrete features of the position, but in general, White should not play a2-a3 if Black can quickly open the b-file and attack the white king (Game 1), whilst he should do so when it is hard for Black to advance b5-b4 (Game 2)."

While the score of the 32 main games is heavily in white's favor (27.5 - 4.5), when you include the related games the analysis is not quite so biased in white's favor. In fact, the author does present black's counterattacking ideas quite capably (as he should--you need to understand them if you want to play the white pieces well). Yakovich also provides useful commentary on the games, rather than just a database dump. Also nice is the production quality of the book; in particular, the analysis includes ample diagrams (typically 2 and sometimes 3 per page).

My only complaint is that Yakovich does not discuss some popular black continuations in the Najdorf, namely the Poisoned Pawn variation and early black counterattacks (both central and queenside) when white's bishop dark-squared bishop is on e3. If he had included a few more games to discuss these continuations, you would be able to play the many variants of the Open Sicilian with confidence at the club level just having studied this book thoroughly.

If you just want a book to give you a simple-as-possible repertoire, Yakovich's book is probably not going to be your cup of tea. But if you are rated 1600 and up, you would enjoy and benefit from this book in many situations:

* You want to learn some explosive attacking ideas and how they relate to pawn formations and pawn play
* You are looking for something new in your repertoire against the Sicilian and aren't sure which direction you want to go
* You play the Sicilian as black and want to understand the attacking ideas and your counterattacking resources against them

Not your average opening book

This is a good book to supplement your study of the Sicilian Defense.

This book focuses specifically on the IDEAS behind the openings. You are not going to get bored here with computer-generated dumps of endless variations to sort through. My favorite chapter has two games to illustrate the "knight sacrifice" on D5. Very interesting to see how a purely positional sacrifice can eventually win a game (fitting that a famous Mikhail Tal game was chosen to illustrative the lesson!). And then there are chapters that cover various common pawn structures in the Sicilian. What to look for and what to watch out for, etc.. There are plenty of very well annotated games throughout to illustrate - some of the very best annotations I have ever run across - not too much, not too little.... and never boring! The basic concepts outlined here are something you will actually retain in long-term memory. Now I better understand WHY certain variations play out the way they do... Working through this book should come prior to attempting to memorize endless variations.

About the Author
Since 1988, Barbara Bounds and her husband, Raymond, have been the owners and operators of Belspur Oaks Pet Crematory, Inc. Located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, their company has been serving the animal community by offering dignified private cremations, grief support materials, and personalized memorial products. For a number of years, she and her husband have also been involved in a community pet loss grief support group called Bentley’s House. The purpose of this group is to give grieving pet owners an opportunity to share their memories of their pets with other animal lovers in a safe, nonjudgmental, and supportive atmosphere. In helping thousands of grieving pet owners say their final goodbyes to their beloved pets, Barbara noticed that the same questions seem to always be asked: “Do you have pets of your own?” and “Have you ever experienced the passing of a beloved and cherished pet?” So, it was with the recurrence of these questions and the informal sharing of these experiences with her pets that Sneaker and Me came to fruition. Barbara’s hope for this book is twofold. First, she would like the memory of the relationship that she shared with Sneaker to be both inspirational and therapeutic to those who are either considering adopting a shelter cat or experiencing or about to endure the loss of a beloved pet. And second, it carries with it an underlying theme: responsible pet ownership is for the entire life of the pet.

A lovely book which tells a good story with beautiful illustrations.

A great read about a shelter cat who gets adopted into a truly FOREVER HOME!!! If you have a companion animal, want a companion animal, or have recently lost a companion animal...this is a heartwarming story about a true human/animal connection. The phases of Sneaker's life are entertaining and heartwarming. Thank you...I enjoyed reading it : )

Very sweet book with beautiful illustrations.

Really enjoyed the story of the cat that selected her person at the shelter, rather than the other way around. The human/animal bond is as strong as any other, and it was very sweet to read about this one.
