Rev. Winston A. Keene is a native of St. Andrew, Jamaica. He migrated to the USA some forty-plus years ago and settled in Queens, New York. Rev. W. A. Keene is the proud husband of forty-nine years to his best friend, Elaine; the proud father of six children; proud grandfather of thirteen; a proud great-grandfather of two. Rev. W. A. Keene received his early and higher education both in the island and the USA. He matriculated at the St. Georges College with a degree in architectural drawing, a graduate of Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Palmer). He also holds diplomas and certificates from several biblical institutions. Rev. Keene is an ordained deacon. He was licensed and ordained by Rev. Dr. James S. Allen Sr. to the Gospel Ministry. Rev. W. A. Keene Sr. held the position of assistant to the pastor at the Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church under Pastor J. A. Renwick. Rev. Keene now resides in Aberdeen, North Carolina.

so she could appreciate the great views of my beloved Pacific

I'm a travel junkie, so this book appeared at a highly serendipitous time for me. I had been preparing to drive from Northeast Washington to Southern California, relocating to where I'd been born and raised. As I traveled south, I had the book in the car with me. Each night I'd review my route and consult this comprehensive guide to ensure I didn't miss anything. Since I'm now living in north Orange County, I frequently flip through it when friends visit, seeking places to show them. So I have the McKowens to thank for taking a pal to see Mission San Juan Capistrano, and then heading back up Pacific Coast Highway to Seal Beach, so she could appreciate the great views of my beloved Pacific. With summer coming up and families planning vacations, this would make a great gift to remind parents that there's plenty more in California beyond Disneyland! Wonderful illustrations, too, to whet the appetite!

If you're looking for a quick, indulgent escape over this holiday break, curl up by the fire with Malick!

I just loved Summer Wind. The internal dialog of Mike Malick was like so many loveable guys I know, irresistible despite his neanderthal moments. He's smart and witty, but he's also super sexy and a bit vulnerable. Being a kid of the Grunge era in Seattle made this a really fun read and rooted it in a relateable world that pulled me in from the very start. I loved it even more because it's a spin off of the Lexy Cooper Mystery series. Lexy's character continues to develop and her relationship with Malick is getting really interesting. I think each release by Christa Charter through these books just keeps getting better. I can't wait for the next one!

Great Entertainment, More Excellent Characters

Summer Wind is a great first book from Mike Malick's perspective. Christa Charter does an excellent job giving us a brand new perspective into the world of Lexy Cooper and the aftermath of Lexy 3. Doing it from Mike's perspective is a wonderful way to show us how things appear on the outside while still giving us a brand new mystery to solve. They mystery of who shot Nicky Ware acted as an interesting look at Grunge and the music of the late 90's. I recommend playing some Nirvana while reading. It does a great job to set the mood. If you are a fan of the Lexy Cooper series or just want a fun mystery to solve, check out Summer Wind.

This book is a loose sequel to The Sleepless Nanny and features Mike Malick from the Lexy Cooper series.

Just so you know it's entirely made of plastic, very lightweight, so don't expect to use this as a paperweight. Downton inside is NOT 3-dimensional, more like a diorama with the Abbey in back and four of the main characters up front. Certainly not unpleasing to look at but definitely overpriced even at $10.00. It comes with a diminutive book of well known quotes from some of our favorite Abbey characters.

I got this snow-globe for my wife for Christmas, and she put it on her desk the following Monday where it has sat ever since with the water getting LOWER, and Lower, and lower to the point where it's only just over half full... Pathetic, and NOW it's too late to return... Quite disgusted...

Pronko writes about Japanese culture, art, jazz, society, architecture and politics for Newsweek Japan, The Japan Times, Artscape Japan, as well as other venues. He has appeared on NHK and Nippon Television and runs his own website, Jazz in Japan (jazzinjapan.com). Fascinating Glimpses

Michael Pronko came to Tokyo to teach English, but soon found himself writing about it. And in writing, to pose questions about this stimulating but strange culture and also, perhaps, to answer questions about himself. The 45 short essays in this volume (he has also published a sequel) are each about the length of a newspaper column. They are all well-written, and full of interesting insights. I have never been to Japan, so cannot judge for accuracy, but he sure convinces me.

He opens with a fascinating essay on the ubiquity of maps in Tokyo, for subways, neighborhoods, anything; he writes about the spaces between buildings, their odd shapes, and mixtures of old and new; and he has an entire section on Tokyo as a giant maze. He is fascinated by signs: signs that advertise, signs that negotiate the important transition between outside and inside; signs everywhere that lay out the precise rules for doing almost everything, from enjoying the park to using the toilet, positing a constant dynamic tension between rule-keeping and rule-breaking.

His writing made me think of Adam Gopnik's brilliant FROM PARIS TO THE MOON, the work of another foreign resident with a keen sense of observation. But Gopnik writes at NEW YORKER length; Pronko's much shorter pieces add up eventually to a similar wide view of his city, but it is that much more exhausting to get there, tapas rather than a main course; I would like to see what he could do in a more ample format. Perhaps that was why I so much enjoyed his final section, After Words, a sort of combination of author's biography, acknowledgements, and personal philosophy. He is an interesting guy.

Now convinced that Tokyo should not have been omitted...

I've been to Japan a couple of times. Felt it best to avoid Tokyo, and so I flew directly into Osaka, with easy access thereafter to Kyoto. The latter does contain so much of what is worthwhile in Japan, and on a manageable scale. Tokyo on the other hand, or so I thought, was "trop," just too much, and would have been overwhelming and even incomprehensible.

Michael Pronko has lived in Tokyo for 15 years, teaching American literature, film, music and art at a Japanese university. He is a keen and thoughtful observer. He quotes Gustave Flaubert: "To make anything interesting, you simply have to look at it long enough." And 15 years of looking has provided a wealth of insights into life in Tokyo, which Pronko has broken down into bite-size pieces, in order to provide a mosaic of life there that is comprehensible. There are 48 essays in all, 3-5 pages each, with topics seemingly plucked at random for the "chaos" that is Tokyo.

Indicative of his wry insights, he connects the classic tea ceremony with its seeming antithesis, popping a soft drink out of a vending machine. He notes that one must still perform a "tea ceremony" bow in order to extract the soft drink from the machine. Restaurants feature hanging cloth menus, completed in beautiful calligraphy, in "kanji," of course. Pronko says: "These hanging signs enhance the appetite by highlighting the food, acting as a kind of linguistic condiment. Without reading the signs in Japan, half the beauty of eating is lost." He takes the reader shopping to a grand department store, "Don Quixote's," that seems to have no departments, but rather is a mad jumble that encourages impulsive buying. Bags for carrying objects have an entire hierarchy of importance and social significance. The best places to "people watch"? Train platforms, due to the lack of public space in other areas. As for the ever so brightly lit Pachinko parlors, Pronko concludes that they "...demand an unusual mixture of patience, optimism and compulsiveness." The author, in describing the maps dedicated to the cherry trees, and their famous blossoms, also uses a troika of words to describe them: "beauty, renewal and brevity." Tokyo has no grand vistas... it is literally a-MAZing, the subject of another meditation. He compares it to the Ryoanji in Kyoto, which displays 15 stones, but not all of them can be seen from one place.

A few more topics: the color "pink", and the respective difference in its importance, between Western and Japanese women. Escalators and stairs, and praise for the many small spaces, the nooks and crannies that still exist in this crowded city. There is still the contrast between the glitz and the glitter of chrome, and the old wooden buildings, of which the author says: "The back and forth between the two can be dizzying, but contributes to Tokyo's oddly variegated visual charm."

Like the good English teacher I suppose he is, Pronko "practices what he preaches" by not only writing well overall, but also ending each essay with a pithy one or two sentence summation. For the first time visitor to Japan, or the "repeat offenders," Pronko's essays are an essential "guide book" that should easily double the visitor's appreciation for the continuing "wonder that is Japan." As for my own quirky rating style for books, I reserve an extra star for those which provide a far better service than confirming my opinions; rather, Pronko's book actually changed my mind about Tokyo. 6-stars.

Guide for the caring traveller

One imagines there are two types of tourist. The first type travels to encounter all the comforts of home but in a different landscape, as the founder of Hilton hotels realised and made a fortune. The second type travels to "find out about the people and culture" and "broaden their experience" of the world. Both types are featured in the ads for the billion dollar travel industry.
Michael Pronko's book is more of a sociological study of the mores and behaviour of Japanese urban society and to that extent may be a very useful guide to the prospective employee of any Tokyo Foreign Embassy as well as a detailed guide to the serious traveller.
In my own case, as an Australian of urban upbringing I find such details of life as ascending and descending stairs or elevators a significant ritual in Sydney, where, on elevators, or stairs, one stands or walks to the left to allow those in a hurry to pass to the right, where young people help elderly, or stand aside, or on joining a train, stand back to allow passengers to disembark, and so on. But consider this from Beauty and Chaos page 201:
" The etiquette of moving to the left side (in Tokyo) when taking the escalator so that others can walk faster up the right is hardly ever followed on
the stairs. Stairs remain a site of uncompromising struggle. On crowded stairways, everyone seems to purposely disregard the arrows and lines trying vainly to direct traffic. People tend to push ahead at any angle and look aggravated if they have to step aside. Like some ancient conflict left unresolved, stairs seem to draw out inner frustrations."
Yet, we learn there are a seeming endless number of rules and orders about all aspects of public life. Socializing in private is rare, but common in public. There is a special sweetness and care about returning money, small change, after a purchase. And pauses in conversation are a special sign of polite and caring - beware those of Italian, Jewish or Australian heritage where conversation overlapping is a joyful norm n'est ce pas?
In short, Beauty and Chaos is a guide for the serious traveller, written with charm and grace and understanding.

Mr Pettigrew scores highly when noting the finer points of Atwill’s performances

Think you know the Lionel Atwill story? Think you are familiar with the key performances of this

unique actor? Think again! Neil Pettigrew has uncovered a wealth of previously unpublished

material detailing Atwill’s life, films and theatrical career which adds immeasurably to the sterling

research already published by Greg Mank and others. “The Exquisite Villain” covers Atwill’s early life

and stage career in greater detail than ever before, and if you want to know the truth behind those

infamous court cases, it is all laid out here. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a straightforward

“Films of...” style book, this volume is equally indispensible. Each film has its own chapter covering

plot points, cast and production detail, and presents many new nuggets of information. Mr

Pettigrew scores highly when noting the finer points of Atwill’s performances, where the actor

apparently drew upon his own character and experiences. The book is illustrated throughout with

numerous rare stills, stage photos and early advertising material which has not seen the light of day

since its original publication. I have no hesitation in recommending “The Exquisite Villain” to every

fan of Lionel Atwill and classic horror, anyone interested in Hollywood’s golden era, or any student

of 20th Century theatre.

Justice for Atwill

At last someone has written a biography of one of the great characters of the classic horror films, there was previously 'Hollywood's Maddest Doctors' another must have for horror fans, but there Atwill had to share with Colin Clive & George Zucco, both of whom also merit their own book.
Here Atwill has center stage, which is appropriate, as the majority of his career was in fact on the stage, both in his hometown of London and Broadway N.York, the author has done a great job of recreating his long and mostly very successful stage career, in which he did a lot more than just act, but it is the films for which he will be remembered, here too there is a coverage of his life and involvement in every film he ever made, and all this is woven around his sometimes complex private life. Then there is separately a complete filmography, every film gets a comprehensive review, the author has managed to see all of Atwill's sound films, there is only one extant silent that he could not get access to.
Overall this is fortunately a wonderful book, as it's unlikely another will be written on Atwill, that can be unreservedly recommended to all horror fans, and indeed anyone interested in the process of stage stars going to hollywood when the talking pictures came in.
Criticism, 1) Why did we have to wait till now for a book on the great man, & 2) The author doesn't like Fog Island (1945)! well as they say 'nobody's perfect'

"He's a great actor who wants to be a film star."

I’m sure I am not alone when hearing the name Lionel Atwill with limiting my view of this actor to the horror thrillers of the 1930s and 40s. How wrong can you be?
At last, here is a book which dismisses this narrow view and delves deep to reveal an actor who fell in love with the movies and left behind a headlining career in the theatre. Author Pettigrew should be congratulated for bringing to light the talent of an actor whose star was dimmed rather than given the scope to shine in the film world. In fact, this is the question that probably runs through the readers head more than any other; why did Atwill abandon his successful stage career to become, at best, a supporting film actor?
The sad truth is that there is no visual record of Atwill at his peak on the stage in England and America. All that remains are fleeting examples of the power he could exude when given a film role to match his talent. Pettigrew goes to great pains to show that Atwill was a great actor, but also reminds us to look closely at his screen persona that hints at a darker side, one which would eventually destroy his career.
It is obvious on every page that author Pettigrew had a passion for his subject matter, and we can only imagine the hours he spent scouring mounds of archive material to fill in Atwill’s forgotten past. This research also extended to the illustrative material featured on every page, much that hasn’t seen the light of day since its contemporary use. For me the greatest achievement of the book is for creating the urge to seek out many of the films mentioned in the book, if only to observe the Atwill stare, a characteristic given much prominence in Pettigrew’s text.
For anyone who loves stage and film history, yes, even those with a narrow view, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
