Mr Pettigrew scores highly when noting the finer points of Atwill’s performances

Think you know the Lionel Atwill story? Think you are familiar with the key performances of this
unique actor? Think again! Neil Pettigrew has uncovered a wealth of previously unpublished
material detailing Atwill’s life, films and theatrical career which adds immeasurably to the sterling
research already published by Greg Mank and others. “The Exquisite Villain” covers Atwill’s early life
and stage career in greater detail than ever before, and if you want to know the truth behind those
infamous court cases, it is all laid out here. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a straightforward
“Films of...” style book, this volume is equally indispensible. Each film has its own chapter covering
plot points, cast and production detail, and presents many new nuggets of information. Mr
Pettigrew scores highly when noting the finer points of Atwill’s performances, where the actor
apparently drew upon his own character and experiences. The book is illustrated throughout with
numerous rare stills, stage photos and early advertising material which has not seen the light of day
since its original publication. I have no hesitation in recommending “The Exquisite Villain” to every
fan of Lionel Atwill and classic horror, anyone interested in Hollywood’s golden era, or any student
of 20th Century theatre.

Justice for Atwill

At last someone has written a biography of one of the great characters of the classic horror films, there was previously 'Hollywood's Maddest Doctors' another must have for horror fans, but there Atwill had to share with Colin Clive & George Zucco, both of whom also merit their own book.
Here Atwill has center stage, which is appropriate, as the majority of his career was in fact on the stage, both in his hometown of London and Broadway N.York, the author has done a great job of recreating his long and mostly very successful stage career, in which he did a lot more than just act, but it is the films for which he will be remembered, here too there is a coverage of his life and involvement in every film he ever made, and all this is woven around his sometimes complex private life. Then there is separately a complete filmography, every film gets a comprehensive review, the author has managed to see all of Atwill's sound films, there is only one extant silent that he could not get access to.
Overall this is fortunately a wonderful book, as it's unlikely another will be written on Atwill, that can be unreservedly recommended to all horror fans, and indeed anyone interested in the process of stage stars going to hollywood when the talking pictures came in.
Criticism, 1) Why did we have to wait till now for a book on the great man, & 2) The author doesn't like Fog Island (1945)! well as they say 'nobody's perfect'

"He's a great actor who wants to be a film star."

I’m sure I am not alone when hearing the name Lionel Atwill with limiting my view of this actor to the horror thrillers of the 1930s and 40s. How wrong can you be?
At last, here is a book which dismisses this narrow view and delves deep to reveal an actor who fell in love with the movies and left behind a headlining career in the theatre. Author Pettigrew should be congratulated for bringing to light the talent of an actor whose star was dimmed rather than given the scope to shine in the film world. In fact, this is the question that probably runs through the readers head more than any other; why did Atwill abandon his successful stage career to become, at best, a supporting film actor?
The sad truth is that there is no visual record of Atwill at his peak on the stage in England and America. All that remains are fleeting examples of the power he could exude when given a film role to match his talent. Pettigrew goes to great pains to show that Atwill was a great actor, but also reminds us to look closely at his screen persona that hints at a darker side, one which would eventually destroy his career.
It is obvious on every page that author Pettigrew had a passion for his subject matter, and we can only imagine the hours he spent scouring mounds of archive material to fill in Atwill’s forgotten past. This research also extended to the illustrative material featured on every page, much that hasn’t seen the light of day since its contemporary use. For me the greatest achievement of the book is for creating the urge to seek out many of the films mentioned in the book, if only to observe the Atwill stare, a characteristic given much prominence in Pettigrew’s text.
For anyone who loves stage and film history, yes, even those with a narrow view, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
