THERE is a fundamental community in the method of human experience which transcends the bounds of space or the limitations of time. When, from the point of view of the race, this process of development is raised to social consciousness, Education comes into being as an organised social process of personal development.

Since it is conditioned on the one hand by the limitations of the so-called educational materials, and since it is clearly dependent, on the other hand, upon the progressive development of philosophical thought, the method of education has had a varied history and has, at different times, emphasised now one and now another aspect of experience. One has but to glance at the history of education in China, in Greece, in medieval Europe, and in present-day America, to realise the great changes that have taken place in the materials of education, and one has only to mention at random such names as Socrates, Milton, Rousseau, and Spencer, to realise that the methods of teaching have differed at least as much in character as in chronology.

The greater emphasis in educational thought has hitherto been placed upon the materials of education or upon special details of educational procedure from a purely formal standpoint, rather than upon the materials in their relation to the process. This tendency has manifested itself in two different ways:

(1) In the course of study, the program, or the curriculum there has been inquiry into the nature of the materials and a reorganisation of these upon the basis of recent psychological study of the needs and capacities of the child.

(2) There has been an attempt to psychologise material, but in such a way that the point of view of the child has tended to prevail over the social aspect of education, and method has been conceived of as something which the teacher can apply to the material she gives the child, instead of being regarded as the very process of interaction between herself and the child and the material, all in one process of experience.

There is, however, in educational thought, as in all other branches of scientific and philosophical inquiry, especially when the materials are in process of reorganization, the tendency to overlook characteristic underlying ideas. It is these very ideas which give significance to the materials by showing their organic interrelation as factors in the experience process, be it individual, social, or racial. It is these dominant ideas of principles which give unity and form to all activity, whether it be in what we call the world of nature or in the world of social action….

My Hero!

Henry Bohl was my father. He told us his war stories over and over. My brother-in-law was so fascinated that he taped interviews with my dad and wrote this book. Jim did a superb job. Our family is so grateful to him for this labor of love. My dad was humbled and pleased with the way the book turned out. Numerous people who have read this book have told me how much they enjoyed it and had no idea anyone could have survived.

What a great read by Mead. Come Back Moo tells the story of his family, but it is also a very well done history of the first half of the 20th Century. The book flows. No extra words here. You'll read it and want to know even more about Moo and Maw, the grandparents who raised the author and his brother. Delightful book. Recommend it to anyone.

Solid Reference

I enjoyed how the SBL spoke from a descriptive, rather than prescriptive, understanding of formatting. It didn't try to invent rules or new patterns, but instead looked for agreement among the styles being used by Bible scholars. This text is a five-star text because it names in clear ways how writers of Bible stuff can better convey meaning and name the way others are informing their thoughts within the text.

When I started checking it, those "couple" turned to "many." The book has moved to my primary, go-to, within-easy-reach shelf.

Great read.

I was given the opportunity to review a book written by Craig & Amy Groeschel; From This Day Forward: Five Commitments to Fail-Proof Your Marriage. This is a wonderfully written book that I have not only enjoyed reading but learned from. Each chapter is written by Craig with an added addition at the end of each chapter written by his wife, Amy. This book is a great manual to help you focus on what a true Christian marriage should be.

I am glad I took the time to read From This Day Forward. I am hoping to strive and improve my own marriage with their helpful hints to a good Christian marriage. I am also hoping to enjoy more of their books in the near future!

Hands down one of the best books on marriage I've ever read. I literally wrote down pages and pages of notes. It took me twice as long to read to book cause I wanted to record so many notes and highlight pages in the book. I love the way Craig writes, it's just like how he talks during his sermons. The best biblical marriage advice out there. This book has been a blessing for myself and my marriage

I had to put it down a few times for things like sleep and work

I actually met C.C. Campbell and her daughter last year and felt an immediate connection. We chatted, and as I result I started to follow her on her website. As soon as I saw her book was out I rushed to buy and download it to my Kindle, knowing that whatever else it might be, it would certainly hold my interest.
Well, that is putting it mildly. I had to put it down a few times for things like sleep and work, but for the most part, I devoured it. This book is full of the kind of details you hope for, but never get on History Channel specials or even in the better-written documentaries. I loved the meticulous bibliography and plentiful citations. Despite the fact that some of her views are likely to upset the apple cart for a few blind believers and be deemed heretical by the American Taliban, they are really VERY common sense. I've always thought of myself as spiritual, and as missing something, but never found answers in any organized religion. I found some sense, but little spiritual comfort, in various philosophies. Now I find an explanation for so much that was lacking when I did my own seeking. What was wrong? Why didn't these things make sense to me? Why couldn't I just believe, and trust? I wanted to so badly. This book shows me why, what was bothering me, what I was unable to articulate or find on my own. This book is so empowering, I can't wait for more. The author's warmth, commitment and understanding of the struggle for spirituality and meaning are apparent. Wherever you may be in your own journey, I think you'll find that her research and wisdom will resonate.

It is a book you will begin and you will not want to put it aside. So, prepare to spend some time immersed in history, religion, spirituality and humanity! This epic tome is an ADVENTURE! The research done on this book is astounding. It covers so much history and data on all religions and brings about a better understanding of our purpose here on Earth. For those who would like to judge the book so quickly by its cover or by what those from the pulpit may be saying about this book, don't sell yourself short! This is a pretty down to earth book guaranteed to enlighten everyone who chooses to read it! You will never look at your life the same. Those years of shame, guilt and down right misery can now be banished with the new knowledge you gain from reading this book. The writer shows so much love and compassion for everyone as she shares her journey filled with her own heartaches and pains in search of answers for all! For women, this is probably the best life lessons you will ever have the opportunity to learn. Read it for yourself, your daughters and all women out in the world! If women are ever to truly feel worthy in our society know that this knowledge can be the key to setting all women free!

Real Women, Real Life Challenges and Successes

Once you start reading an essay in Banking the Bacon, you can't put the book down until you finish the essay--and can't wait to come back and read another. I picked it up intending to just take a peak inside because I was anxious to leave the house and start my day. Instead, I ended up sitting down and reading the first essay, "Becoming Rousseau," which is still my favorite. As a woman, the issues and attitudes presented in these beautifully written essays at times validated me and other times made me think about myself and my various roles in life in new ways. Becoming Rousseau resonated with me the most. If you are a man, reading this essay, and this book, may give you new insight into your wife's soul and even lead you to develop new approaches to true partnership in your marriage--even if you think you've already done that. If you are a woman, it provides a valuable example of how to make meaning in your own life rather than depending on others to define you.

Bringing Home the Bacon

As one of the seven women chosen to appear in this book, I'm biased about my submission, but thoroughly enjoyed the other six as well. The topic is still significant to women as we continue to struggle with lower wages, glass ceilings, and often unfair treatment in the workplace. The essays in this book use authentic situations, sometimes humor, sometimes sadness to address the day-to-day realities balancing traditional roles with bringing home some bacon.

The winning essay Becoming Rousseau gives voice to the struggles and triumphs of becoming our true selves; an inspiring story filled with humor, irony and joy. Ms. Rousseau's story reminds me of my own and fills me with gratitude that I live in a time in history when I can effect change.
