Inner Anarchy: Dethroning God and Jesus to Save Ourselves and the World, by Jim Palmer

One of the great spiritual writers of our times, Jim Palmer, is calling for anarchy – inner anarchy! Since 2005, Palmer has been exploring the terrain of spirituality beyond the mindsets of organized religion, and has written four books, including the widely acclaimed works, Divine Nobodies, and Notes from (Over) the Edge. In his provocative new book Inner Anarchy, Palmer shows how the Christian religion has twisted the true life and message of Jesus, and has preached a powerless gospel that is preventing millions of people from being free. He challenges the reader to inner anarchy, “We must dethrone and tear down the mindsets and ideologies that are ruling our world from within us and taking us further down a road of certain doom.” Whether you are a Christian, Atheist, or whatever religious or spiritual background you may have, Palmer offers a hopeful place for all human beings to explore the possibility of birthing a new reality in our world. He writes, “Jesus announced the inauguration of a new age—the likes of which we have never seen but have dreamed of. His words are compelling and fascinating. He implied that this age is hidden in the human heart and is now ready to be birthed into existence. Jesus said it would come in the midst of great turmoil and would be led not by religious preachers and Bible scholars, but by those who open up their minds, become like a child and trust what is deep inside their hearts.” “Inner Anarchy is not a book; it’s smelling salts.” – Jacob Byrne “An admonition to the Christian church, an invitation to birth a new world, and a challenge to tear down what is ruling us from within.” – Maria Armstrong “…brings God out of the sky to the center of our lives. Inner Anarchy shows the way to the future.” – Jim High “It has changed everything I thought I knew about God.” – Byron Johnson “Remember the sixties? Inner Anarchy could spark a movement that finishes the job!” – Carson Kavanagh “Gritty. Deep. A message to rattle your cage, and change the world.” – Lucas Farrell “... will speak to you at your core and trust the truths that lie within you.” – Reuben Goff

Don't let the subtitle put you off: it's pro-Jesus and God, just not the Augustinian versions we're used to.
By beckdavenport
This book has good news.

First, it upsets my Inner Fundamentalist--"fundamentalism" meaning "my ideas are right and yours are wrong." Fundamentalism is not just for Christians; it's for anti-Christians, Muslims, anti-Muslims, gays, anti-gays, milk drinkers, anti-milk drinkers, etc. This book gave me reason to consider birthing an Inner Accepter.

Second, it asks that you consider respecting, even trusting yourself. My church background emphasized "not leaning on your own understanding" (Prov. 3:5) and remembering that "the heart is deceitful above all things" (Jer. 17:9). Basically, you don't have wisdom inside you, and if some of it somehow attempts to be heard, squash it dead--it can't be trusted.

One of Inner Anarchy's main points is that you can trust yourself. You can listen to what's inside you and consider it valid.
Again, the ghost of my fundamentalist background is screaming that this idea is utter nonsense. That's what hippies and all those no-absolute-truth delusional people think.

But what if denying your own wisdom (it's been shushed for a while; it might take some time to get its gumption to speak up again) is pummeling the piece of the Trinity you've been given? What if the church's emphasis on External Authority (church leaders, the Bible, traditional doctrine) is not a trinity to worship? What if Internal Authority had some say?

And just because I'm in the mood, remind me again of the people Jesus gave the most tongue-lashings to? Was it the sinners, tax collectors, prostitutes? Nope, it was the religious law givers/imposers. Check out Matt. 23 and Luke 11: Woe to the scribes and Pharisees (External Authorities) who tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders.

This book encourages you to take off those heavy burdens and find truth--its yoke is easy and its burden light.

This amazing book will open your eyes to what is beyond ...
By Rachael Kelly
This amazing book will open your eyes to what is beyond the external, and point you towards the power you already possess on the inside, to help your inner anarchist rise up and bring out your natural talents to use in the world. Jim explores ways of using what is inside us to guide us, that everything we need is right there, just waiting for us to grasp it. Jim says it like this:
"So, here's one thing I especially want to get across to people. It's in you... yes... YOU! Your authority is within you. The way, the truth, the life is inside you. Source, Life, Spirit... it flows inside you. You have 100% of it. No person has more of it than you do. The only challenge we have is connecting with it. This is only a challenge because we have been convinced that it's complicated and that there's some special religious or correct spiritual protocol we must figure out and follow in order to connect with this world within us. Okay, I have a set of very important questions to determine if you are really the kind of person who is capable of accessing this heavenly dimension within you. Ready? Okay actually, it's just one question. Here it is: Are you capable of feeling something? Great; you're in! Jesus said it's simple and natural - something a child could do or experience. See the problem here? We are the ones who have complicated and from what I see, our biggest obstacle is that we simply don't trust ourselves. We have to come together and encourage one another to trust and follow what we know through our deepest feelings, which is the life of the Spirit within us. There's no easy way out of this - you're just gonna have to step out and start trusting that voice inside you, and start expressing it in whatever way is most natural for you. This is the kind of inner anarchy we need!"

A Dangerous Book
By Kate Johnson
It’s been a long, long time since I looked inside a book and thought to myself, “This is Dangerous.” A long time. Not since my evangelical days. Since I read it I’ve been trying to decipher why exactly I had that reaction, and how valid it even is. This review is the result - basically my own reaction to reading the book.

The sorts of authors I already have on my shelf – Brian McLaren, Rob Bell, Kathy Escobar, Richard Rohr, Phyllis Tickle – are the ones most conservative/mainstream Christians would declare dangerous. And they might be right. Because those authors are all bridge-builders. Transitionists. They are still operating firmly from within their tradition and making an effort to include and reach out to those people who are still attached to and operating from within that worldview. They want to promote understanding. They are trying to make their new ideas palatable to people stuck in the old view. To make it possible for them to embrace new ideas, the ideas have to be framed as new interpretations of established givens. (The existence of God, for instance). Of course the people inside the traditions don’t see it that way – but the fact that they feel so threatened is because it’s their system these authors are trying to change, as opposed to chucking the whole thing out the window.

In Inner Anarchy, Jim Palmer is not even trying preserve the old. His thoughts are very in-your-face, blatant, even inflammatory. He is throwing out cherished ideas right and left. (No heaven. No sin as traditionally defined. No God-in-the-sky.) This is not the place to come for processing your questions. It probably won’t speak to anyone but those who’ve already walked down that road and thought some of the same thoughts as Jim has written down. Those people will find relief at finally seeing them in print. Other people will just drop the book like it was on fire. For them it will be too much, too far.

Inner Anarchy calls for a revolution, a complete break from and throwing off of organized Christianity and its doctrines in order to embrace what Jim outlines as Jesus’ original message and intent. Enough to make many (most?) Christians uncomfortable. Still, does it really deserve the label Dangerous? The word connotes power of a sort. “Dangerous” implies that enough people are paying attention to you to find you threatening. I’m not sure that’s actually true. After all, most revolutionaries are operating on the fringes, and so mainstream society can just dismiss them as wackos.

For me, I am curious how it will all shake out. There is a place for all these conversations. I have a sneaking suspicion the transitionist/bridge-builders will do more towards actually changing our society’s relationship between spirituality and religion. But I could be wrong. Jim Palmer is adding a useful element to the conversation. I don’t disagree with a lot of what he’s saying; but I don’t necessarily agree with it, either. I feel a lot of the points he makes could quite likely be true; it’s the manner in which he makes them and his end conclusion which don’t quite sit right with me.

In some ways his writing still has that evangelical feel to it, the “I’ve figured this out and now I’m going to convince everyone else” mindset. He wants to overturn the institution of religion completely, but I’m not sure that’s possible or even a good idea. (I’m speaking as someone who left institutional religion a while ago; I have no vested interest in the matter either way.) Organized religion developed as part of civilization. At this point it may be something wired into us. And I’ve seen ample evidence of people putting into practice many of the principles outlined in Jim’s writings while at the same time working within the a framework of organized religion. (Richard Rohr comes first to mind.)

As far as the writing itself – the quality is excellent. The style is concise, easy to read and understand. I don’t completely buy everything Jim is saying here, but I do think his work is a valuable contribution to the conversation.
