DIY with Professional Advice and a Bit of Wisdom

How To Get More For Your Home is a book with a mission: to educate people how to sell their homes in Australia without agents. Apparently, the Australian real-estate market is in the hand of the real-estate agent lobby. Accordingly, we are looking at a contemporary David against Goliath story and that’s already enough reason to like the book, which is paused to disrupt an entire industry.
The book is well structured. The author begins with the history of the Australian real-estate scene and explains why it is what it is. He continues with some myth busting; in particular, the myth that traditional commission sale (the lobbied Goliath) is a must for private sellers. Subsequently, he shows the reader how the real estate scene could be a better place: with agent assisted sales. As far as I can see, agent assisted sales offers the best of both worlds: freedom and safety, saving the private seller time and frustration. How To Get More For Your Home is very transparent about when private sellers need assistance and when not. DIY with professional advice and a bit of wisdom - what more do you need?
Towards the end, the book rolls out a guided sales process like a red carpet and gives many practical tips that I don't want to mention here, because they are the main reasons why you should buy this book. No - I change my mind, I want to mention two: that a seller should put himself into the shoes of the buyer and that a good negotiation aims at win-win. I also like the KISS marketing advice: Keep It Simple Seller.
On an important side note: the author is the founder of the company PropertyNow. PropertyNow promotes agent assistant sales, which means that the book indirectly advertises a company and its services. Having said that it still appears neutral and offers great value for readers who won’t engage PropertyNow.

The book that someone had to write

This book delivers clear and concise arguments based on facts and not fiction, why the traditional sale through a real estate agency is by and large, a colossal waste of the seller's money. In saying that, the author still mentions the circumstance where they can be useful for sellers, for example trying to sell property held in joint ownership as part of a separation.
The content feels current and includes many useful insights into other forms of sales marketing beyond the big real estate portals, like free advertisers or social media that allow for a total private sale, not agent assisted.
I have sold real estate alone in the past and I am in the process of doing it again, hence why I bought the book. While reading it, I felt that a lot of my own experience with selling with or without a full service agent was confirmed, summed up and underpinned with examples and facts. For example I argue against the value of open for inspections for years and could never find the right arguments for my opinion, now this book has delivered them. Open for inspections are nothing but a little get together for tyre kickers and the nosy neighbours, with the sole purpose of creating more sales leads for the agent. In almost all circumstances an utter waste of time. But the book also describes the exceptions and I liked the sneaky idea of piggy bagging on other open for inspections in your street, as advertised by full service real estate agent in your local media....
The last part of the book deals with author’s personal struggle over the last 10 years with the big portals owned by Murdoch and Fairfax and makes fascinating reading. I cross reverenced some of the information by digging up web archives and found everything he says to be the truth or plausible.
It is obvious that the author doesn’t have a lot of friends left in the traditional real estate agent industry. This book will for sure create him even more enemies from the ranks of the Mercedes and Porsche driving agents, they will hate this book.
Yes, the author tries to sell a product (agent assisted private sale) himself with this book, he doesn’t hide this. In fact he is very open about it and gives great advice even for people that will never use his services.
In my opinion the $12 for the book is the best investment any potential real estate seller in Australia can make. Whether you are a first time seller, or already have experience with selling, there is enough in this book for everyone. It’s a gem and I can not recommend it highly enough.

This book is very educational. I know nothing about real estate, I feel if I were to sell my home this book would be of great use. It contains a lot of useful information upon which the average home seller should get the book to become accustomed to. The book contains everything from how the basics of scams, to how to build a trust account, with all the diy required. This book does posses a few flaws however. The book can feel like an advertisement when reading occasionally. I felt like at some points when reading it that it was trying to sell me something. I realize this was not the intent however it did come off as such occasionally.
The book contains a lot of informative information, however it will dabble into bias now and then, mostly towards realestate, however this is to be expected and most likely will agree with the audience, this book attracts. This book can be very useful if at times boring. It didn't keep my attention at points but I felt I needed to keep reading. Though not captivating the book contains knowledge that I feel to be essential for anyone wishing to sell there home.
I recommend this book, even with all its flaws its better then most books within its genre all the while being an informative read. If your wishing to sell your home and your Australian you should pick up this book for it will educate you on what needs to be educated. No book is without flaws this book is not exempt from that, however I think it makes up for in information what it lacks in attention
