Adrift (Adrift Series Book 1), by K.R. Griffiths

For artist Dan Bellamy and his new bride Elaine, a trip on the world's biggest, newest cruise ship represents more than just the honeymoon of a lifetime: it is also a celebration of the progress Dan has made toward beating the agoraphobia that has plagued him since he suffered a horrific knife attack two years earlier.

The ship is a perfect floating paradise, but when Dan spots what he thinks is a body being thrown overboard, he begins to suspect that not everybody aboard the Oceanus is there for a vacation.

Soon, Dan will discover that there are some things worse than murder, and the body he saw is just the beginning. Because something is coming for the passengers on the Oceanus.

Something that isn't supposed to exist...

From the Author
Adrift Q & AWhat can you tell us about Adrift?Adrift, much like my zombie series Wildfire Chronicles, is my take on another of horror's most enduring monsters, but I tried to write it in such a way that what's going on is not immediately obvious to the reader, so I don't want to give too much plot away. How does it compare to your previous work? It's the longest book I've written, and is definitely closer in tone to Wildfire Chronicles than (serial killer horror) Survivor. But where Wildfire aimed to tell an epic tale, the events of Adrift are confined to a single location, and occur across a few hours, so it's intended to be a fast, intense read.Action or horror?Adrift really straddles that line, probably more than any of my previous novels. There's plenty of horror in the story and, I hope, a few scares and scenes of suspense for the reader. After Survivor, which was pretty dark, I wanted to get back to something that featured a hint of the paranormal, which I think makes for a lighter, entertaining read. It's horror without being too heavy or extreme. Will Adrift be the start of a series? That's really up to the readers. Adrift is a self-contained story with a resolution for all the characters, but there is definitely scope for a sequel. It's a fun world to spend time in, and I'd be happy to return to it.

Monstrous luxury cruise - no spoilers
By James Tepper
ADRIFT was my introduction to the work of KR Griffiths. I picked up the Kindle version for $0.99 after reading the advertising blurbs seeing so many glowing reviews and its very high average rating.

ADRIFT is a neoclassic horror-monster story, in which the old creaky mansion has been replaced by the world's largest, newest luxury liner, the "Oceanus", on her maiden voyage. The monsters are, both old and new. You've heard about them before, but not in the way Griffiths imagines them, which throws out just about every single bit of common mythology and replaces them with a totally new backstory.

There are a few main characters, but the principal protagonist is Dan Bellamy, a 20-something survivor of a horrific attack at an ATM in which he was stabbed just above the eye, a penetrating would that entered the brain but thankfully caused no permanent damage other than paralyzing agoraphobia, panic attacks and severe PTSD. This would comes into play in a big way later on. Dan and new bride Elaine board the Oceanus as a once in a lifetime honeymoon celebrating not only their marriage but Dan's great success at therapy that now allows him to control (mostly) his agoraphobia and re-enter life. We also meet Mark Ledger, as wise guy security guard with a penchant for the ladies and mouthing off that has cause him to switch jobs a few times a year. And then there are 4 Rennick brothers who stow away on the ship and are clearly up to no good. The first third of the book is all set up, and then the lights go out and the s**t hits the fan.

The pacing is very fast, and the tension is high, There is blood and guts and gore, lots of it. The writing is pretty good, not lyrical or poetic, but it gets the job done without yanking the reader out of the story. I will definitely give another of Mr. Griffiths' novels a shot. Some other reviewers have complained about a surfeit of typos, but I didn't see them. Either they were British spellings that I am accustomed to or else I was too wrapped up in the story to notice. Either way, I enjoyed ADRIFT and it is a bargain for the price.

So why only 3 stars? Because the entire premise of the novel is built around a plot hole or 2 that are large enough the sail the Oceanus through. No spoilers here, but if you want to know what the problem is (which would constitute a giant spoiler), read my comment that you cannot stumble on accidentally.

Recommended, with the caveat that there is large plot hole.

Horror at Sea
By Connee Davidson
Just like the Titanic, the beautiful cruise ship Oceanus leaves the harbour on her maiden voyage, carrying a few thousand happy travelers. As the ship reaches the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it suddenly loses all power, lighting, radios, and phones, and during the confusion of the passengers, a sinister helicopter flies over the ship and lowers a huge, sealed crate. As the curious group , stare at the crate, it opens and they see a horror like no other, and soon the entire crew and passengers are killed in unspeakable ways, save for a handful of survivors. In a gory and graphic manner, the creatures, now free of their prison, roam the ship, and the fate of those few survivors seems hopeless. I was very anxious to read what the outcome of this book would reveal. Read it and find out for yourselves. Very good and well written story. I will definitely read more books by K.R.Griffiths

~~Click, Click in the Corridors~~
By USN Chief, Ret..VT Town
The maiden voyage of the cruise ship Oceanus should be a miraculous event. However, the four Rennick brothers have been given a mission by their father to complete. Miraculous turns into chaotic within a few hours. The elder Rennick terms it a "calling" of sorts which involves the duty of sons. An ancient extraction must be performed and it has been over a hundred years since one was accomplished. Guess you get the drift now, don't you?

Dan Bellamy and his wife, Elaine are celebrating their honeymoon on the Oceanus. Dan has an acute form of Agoraphobia which is the result of a vicious physical attack with a knife. As a result, poor Dan has suffered panic attacks and seizures. It has been difficult for him to leave his home. So, this honeymoon cruise is definitely out of his Dan's comfort zone but a huge step in his recovery.

The descriptions of the "clickers" are incredible. And, then the clicking of the talons occurs in the corridors of the ship. As one may imagine, there is gore "galore" when the "clickers" begin their deck by deck search.

Many surprises await the reader with every twist and turn through the 17 decks on this new ship. The ending is perfect for this novel of being adrift in the sea.

Most highly recommended.
