A comic book that inspired generations

As time goes on, it seems likely that British comic creator Alan Moore ("The Watchmen," "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen") named his comic book publishing company "America's Best Comics" as a direct homage to this Nedor/Standard golden age publication. When Alex Ross launched his "Project Superpowers" epic creation, he featured The Fighting Yank, The Black Terror and Miss Masque, all from the original America's Best Comics book, as pivotal characters in his ambitious, epic story (which continues into 2015 with the Black Terror title, "Blackcross," written by the equally admired Warren Ellis). It is an atypically terrific golden age book whose quality actually improved as it carried on. Indeed, the higher the number, the better the art -- a singular phenomenon in the world of comic book publishing. If Marvel Comics hadn't had Dr. Strange in its stable of characters, it's likely Doc Strange would also have been among the revived classic superheroes. It is to the credit of Golden Age Reprints (a.k.a. UP History & Hobby) and Amazon that so many of these highly collectible books are part of their offerings. This discerning move rates a big "Thank You" from this fan of the genre.

Un libro valiente sobre un caso en Guatemala que sigue impune

Tal como dice la descripción de este libro, "se lee de un tirón". Esta es la historia de Khalil Musa, un hombre admirable de cuna sencilla que llegó muy joven de Líbano a Guatemala buscando mejores oportunidades. Dedicó su vida al trabajo duro y honesto, y con los años logró establecer una poderosa empresa textil en el país. La disciplina y entrega personal al trabajo, la forma humana y cálida con la que trató siempre a sus trabajadores y socios, y su vocación de servicio le garantizaron un éxito continuo que luego extendió a cargos directivos en distintas entidades nacionales.

Escrito por su hija, Aziza, este libro cuenta el origen y el trayecto de Khalil hasta el día que fue brutalmente asesinado junto a su hija, Marjorie. En uno de los períodos más negros de corrupción e impunidad de Guatemala, el asesinato de Khalil y Marjorie Musa desencadenó una serie de eventos que hizo tambalear al gobierno y despertó el civismo de la nación entera. Aunque sí se logró identificar a los culpables, nunca se hizo justicia debido al enviciado sistema legal y político del país. Es un caso que llora sangre.

La narración de Aziza Musa se lee fácilmente: es amena y fluida, y describe con sencillez los recuerdos de un padre ejemplar. Recomiendo mucho este libro, porque en él Aziza tiene el valor de explicar los pasos que se dieron para que esta historia se llevara a cabo y las personas que estuvieron detrás. Desmiente calumnias que fueron oficialmente aceptadas y que en el futuro veremos convertidas en una película que será otro golpe más a una familia que ya sufrió demasiado. Esta es una historia que toca mi corazón porque conozco bien a la familia: fui amiga de Marjorie desde la infancia, y fue duro presenciar su cruel asesinato, seguido de una sarta de calumnias y enredos, y una resolución sin justicia. Es mi deseo que este libro circule lo más posible y que talvez, si soñamos un poco, algún día los autores intelectuales de este crimen reciban su merecido.

En muchos casos de asesinatos públicos y con señalamientos políticos, las investigaciones y noticias del mismo se dan en un período de tiempo largo. Este caso fue así y fue interesante para mi darme cuenta a través de este libro, que este hecho lleva a que las personas pierdan el hilo de la historia dando espacio a que políticos y personas de poder con intereses propios, filtren a traves de los medios conclusiones falsas, pero convenientes para ellos. Tienen además la habilidad de hacerlo tan sutilmente que logran muchas veces que las personas les crean. El libro hila muy bien la vida de Don Khalil Musa y los hechos cercanos a su asesinato, dándole contexto al posible móvil del mismo. A través de esta historia, aunque única pero muy similar a muchas otras, veo lo importante que es hacerse responsable de informarse y apoyar sólo a reporteros y medios de comunicación honorables que no se presten a estas manipulaciones.

This book was an excellent narrative of the life of two people and the family they created and all the people they "picked up" along the way (Always Room For One More). This was a great read and an easy read. You don't have to know these two people to have their story affect you in a very positive way. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

Though Joe Abbate suffers from agoraphobia, he has no fear of facing and reclaiming his truth. His memoir of coming to the aid of his parents when his father recovers from heart surgery will tug warmly at your heart AND make you laugh at family life at its rawest. Joe bravely remembers the hardest parts of growing up with a father who never could show his love, and then shows us all how he gave, and kept giving, his own love. This book inspired me to look at my own relationship with my father.

Just got done reading Joe's book God's Only Mistake: Becoming a Man in My Father's Eyes, he has captured his Dad perfectly and his story telling left me feeling a thousand different feelings. Excellent writing, I couldn't put it down!

What a great read. I spent many nights reading

This book can only be five stars. What a great read. I spent many nights reading, trying to keep my eyes open because I didn't want to stop reading. I laughed wholeheartedly at some of Joe's comments about his stay with his dad. I will also say that just as easily I cried over a few. Things are definitely passed on to our children. They will have to go against the grain to correct what they can and other things will silently slip on to our children, unknowingly, for them to deal with. I loved this book. Please read this book. You will be a better human being for gaining the knowledge that Joe Jr acquired at the end of the book, from his STAY with is dad.

Lays groundwork for deeper exploration.

Although I'm not necessarily into handmade jewelry I picked it up to learn more about niche in general plus i know a few people who i was considering giving a handmade jewelry set too.

The most valuable section of the book is how it describes the tools needed to get the jobs done. The chapters are illustrated and I found this helpful because some of the tools mentioned by the book to make earrings are things I never heard of such as nippers and chain nose pliers. The images helped me to realize that there were a lot more things which are needed besides a jewelry set itself.

I would definitely recommend this book as a base foundation introduction to give as gift with a full on jewelry making set and tools for any person who is looking for a new hobby.

I love this book! It's chock full of creative and cute ideas to make handmade jewelry as gifts or just for yourself! I'm looking forward to trying out some of the designs. Author Allison Keys shares techniques for creating beautiful beaded necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and hair accessories. If you or someone you know is crafty and is interested in making jewelry, I'd definitely recommend this book.
