A rival to Holmes

This Chinese detective in modern Singapore is a treat to rival the best of Sherlock Holmes. I enjoyed every one of the eight whodunits and Zhang’s flair for solving locked-room murders.
My favourite is the one set in England, where homicide spoils a convention of Mystery Writers and fools the local cops. Inspector Zhang helps them unravel the impossible while discovering how ebooks shatter the traditional publishing trade.
It is an added pleasure in these tales when Zhang, an admirer of the Golden Age sleuths, talks about the great whodunit authors of yesteryear.

In case you haven't come across this cop on the beat before, THE EIGHT CURIOUS CASES OF INSPECTOR ZHANG by Stephen Leather introduces you to another ongoing literary hero in his active stable. He joins MI5 operative Dan "Spider" Shepherd and the private investigator of the Dark Side Jack Nightingale.

Inspector Zhang is of the Singapore Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) working out of the Police Cantonment Complex on New Bridge Road.

In the first of the eight chapters, Zhang complains to his faithful sidekick, Sergeant Lee, that the low crime rate in Singapore means that there are too few murders of quality to require his investigatory skills. Bummer! Then, in the remainder of the book, he proceeds to nimbly cope with a veritable crime wave.

Sergeant Lee, though described as one of the CID's most promising sergeants, appears to be nothing more than a stenographer for the taking of notes while Zhang does the heavy lifting. Her character offers little.

Zhang is a great fan of those detective stories featuring Hercule Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, and the heroes of John Dickinson Carr. He dreams of a caseload just like theirs. Perhaps this says more about the author Stephen Leather than Zhang. In any case, Leather has fashioned here eight short mysteries of reasonable cleverness for his hero to solve and Lee to record in her notebook. The eight are nicely distributed in different locales, one even taking place aboard an airliner in flight ‒ a "locked room" mystery if there ever was one.

As a young reader, I started out devouring all the Hardy Boys books, and then graduated to Sherlock Holmes and a smattering of Carr's works. Finally, before drifting away from the genre, I most enjoyed following Denis Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie pursue Fu Manchu around London's foggy East End. (Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu series is nowadays considered oh so politically incorrect because of its stereotyping of the "evil Chinaman." So, the PC point is? I love that Fu annoys some people so much.)

While I read very little in the way of detective fiction anymore (except Jack Nightingale), THE EIGHT CURIOUS CASES OF INSPECTOR ZHANG provided welcome diversion on recent flights to and from Hawaii. It certainly beat the airline's self-adulatory magazine in the seat pocket in front of me. During the chapter "Inspector Zhang and the Dead Thai Gangster," I kept hoping for a body to pitch out of one of the lavatories and Zhang to materialize with the drinks cart to solve the case. But, I guess he doesn't do the Los Angeles to Honolulu run.

I have read all of Stephen Leather's Inspector Zhang books. Inspector Zhang is the Singapore version of Detective Columbo. The books are an easy read and well written. Excellent and definitely one of my favorite authors.

Great introduction to Covenant Theology

If you read God’s word at all you will be confronted with the word “covenant.” It is impossible not to. What is quite possible is to read these references to covenant and completely miss what God is revealing. It is too easy to read through the Bible and see references to “covenant” and just skim through them or dismiss it as an antiquated “Bible” word that has no extensive meaning like “propitiation” or “justified.” :-/

P&R Publishing has released a work that is going to help any who read it to have a better grasp on “covenant” and its implications. Covenants Made Simple by Jonty Rhodes was released in 2013 in the UK but now it is getting a stateside release and it is easy to see why. The subtitle, Understanding God’s Unfolding Promises to His People, is good, but you really need one of those old, three-paragraph, Puritan subtitles to do justice to the scope of this great book. What is a covenant? What role does covenant play in God’s revelation of himself? Of his redemptive purposes? What covenant blessing do we enjoy?

Covenants Made Simple seems to have two main parts. In the first part, Rhodes unpacks what a covenant is and traces the covenant through the biblical storyline from Adam onward. He also lists out the covenant blessings and curses attached to each covenant. These seem to follow the pattern of people, place, and presence, and it is fascinating to see how this pattern fleshes out in each covenant. It is also important to see that “covenant” is not just an aspect of God’s revelation. In many ways, it is the filter through which we view the story. As we read accounts and events we do not read them as unconnected nuggets of information or nice stories. We see them as parts of a whole, interconnected drama in the one unfolding drama of God’s redemptive plan for his covenant people.

After surveying the covenants of Scripture, Rhodes shows the reader how this motif affects core doctrines. Rhodes shows that we enjoy a covenant salvation based on God’s great love, a love that is unconditional, personal, and unstoppable. He then shows that we, the Church, are a covenant people. One body of many bodies, one people from many peoples. He also goes through doctrines associated with this truth (baptism, discipline, and the Supper). Rhodes closes with the idea of a covenant life, how we as covenant people are to respond to God’s truth in our life. We are empowered to obedience by the Holy Spirit of God and educated in how to obey by God’s word. These truths are definitely truths for life and covenant people are called to be faithful people.

The layout of this book is great and the content is rich and simple. This is one of, if not the one, the best introductions to covenant theology that is available. The diagrams are actually helpful(so often diagrams just seem to be decorative). The presentation is warm and personal. This is a tremendous book and I look forward to recommending this to many, many people! Great book!

Excellent introduction to covenantal theology

One word that you often see in the bible, in both testaments is the word covenant. But what exactly is it? And what does covenants have to do with me?

Having read, but not finish “God of Promise: Introducing Covenant Theology” by Michael Horton, owing to my own inability to understand it, when I read the title of this book, it was a book I looked forward to reading.

And this book really makes covenant theology simple to understand. Jonty Rhodes starts the book by highlight a passage spoke by the Lord Jesus “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matt 26:28). Often as we read it, we often miss out the impact of the word, the “blood of the covenant”, as Rhodes puts it, would it really matter if the phrase was blotted out? Of course it matters, unless you don’t see a need for covenantal theology in your belief.

With that introduction, Rhodes then traces throughout the bible to see whether covenantal theology is biblical or just made up by man. Rhodes brings the readers through the major covenants that God made with man, and through it highlights the implications of the covenants, the blessing and curses that comes along with it. Rhodes shows the readers that covenant, if put simply is “an agreement between God and human beings, where God promises blessings if the conditions are kept and threatens curses if the conditions are broken.”.

Rhodes does an excellent job tracing the covenantal theme throughout the whole bible, showing how God relates to us within the covenant that was set with man. As an additional point, this book is thoroughly Presbyterian, I do like the fact that this book is both covenant and reformed (i.e. TULIP), and Rhodes put forth very clearly the rationale the ecclesiology of Presbyterian and a defence for pedo-baptism. Though I am not entirely convinced, I found his points to be made excellently and his presentation of other church structure to be fair and well-represented. Rhodes also added in various figures to illustrate the points of the chapters, which I found them to be excellent summary and showed visually the points he was making in the chapters.

This book would be good for any Presbyterian, especially those who are new to the faith, or a youth in a presbyterian church. For those who are not, this book remains helpful to allow you to grow in your understanding of covenant, and also give you knowledge on the rationale behind the Presbyterians. An simple and easy to read book, but by no means a simplistic book.

The best introduction to covenant theology and salvation by God alone that I have ever read.

I can't say enough good things about this book. This is far and away the most accessible and easy to read introduction to Covenant Theology, a reformed view of salvation by God alone, basics of church government, sacraments, law and gospel, and more. If every pastor read this book, the church would be better for it. If every layman read this book, I have no doubt that their affections for Jesus will be stirred to adoration. As someone who reads a lot of heady theology books, this was truly refreshing and I hope more writers will labor to bring high theology to a more understandable level so that all can enjoy these glorious truths.

This may sound somewhat biased since I am a relative of the author, I do know that many of the events depicted in this book were based on reality and were not contrived. Banana transport or any teamster related transport in the days of post war east coast combined with working at the docks do provide much fodder for this story and others depicting the interaction with those who were considered to be "Connected" and those trying to make a living. This is a quick and enjoyable read .

Takes out all of the guess work

Sam Siv is an author that I am constantly recommending. I have read a huge selection of his books and am never disappointed. I started reading some of his wedding guide books after my boyfriend proposed. I knew that I did not want to hire a wedding planner, but I also knew that I knew absolutely nothing about wedding planning. Sam Siv has basically been my personal wedding planner and I cannot even begin to express how much his books have helped my wedding planning. I have been able to take a deep breath thanks to these books, which break down everything into steps. I am not the kind of person who knows anything about bouquets and therefore I was having a mini melt down over trying to find the perfect bouquet that would fit in perfectly with my wedding. This book took all of the guess work out of finding that perfect bouquet and I could not be happier with the results. If you want a guidebook that is going to feel more like receiving attention from a wedding planner than this is definitely the book (and Sam Siv is definitely the author) that I would recommend.

Weddings: Wedding Bouquets is a helpful guide to help you make certain you cover all the factors necessary when picking out your Big Day flowers! Siv does a great job dotting the "i's" and crossing the "t's."

And when it comes to requiring that visual, once again Sam Siv delivers! The photos really are beautiful and just help you to actually "see" what you might like on your wedding day.

For me I wish he had a nice bouquet of dandelions that didn't wilt within minutes! I know technically they're a weed, but I just LOVE the yellow color.

Bottom line is, this wedding bouquet book gives you everything you need to make certain you pick the perfect bouquet for your day. I highly recommend you read this book and let Siv know know you think. That way he'll know what to write in his next book. Good stuff!

My son found this very boring and useless. He's read every Diary Of A Wimpy Kid book, and has looked at Jeff Kinney's website a few times. This book did not have any information in it that he did not already know.

I had hoped this book might help me prepare for my Holy Land trip but found that it really is a book that has songs, prayers and devotions as you visit each site. On our pilgrimage we were accompanied by a priest and deacon who provided their own songs, prayers and devotions so I found that I didn't need it. I would recommend it if you aren't making the visits with a group. I has also hoped for maps but the ones in the book are somewhat crude.

Our tour guide gave us a "Pilgrim's Map of the Holy Land" and that was an invaluable tool as we traversed the Holy Sites and it also shows in yellow all the towns that Jesus personally visited.

“Letters From a Sailor” is a chronology of actual letters written by my father when he first joined the U.S.Navy, that he sent to his mother and father. This is the story of my father, a young man from a small town in Pennsylvania, who had never ventured outside the states of Pennsylvania and perhaps New Jersey before he joined the Navy. He joined the Navy to see the world and his observations and experiences are factually chronicled through letters he wrote home from 1935 to the beginning of 1937. There are no major sea battles taking place in my book, just day to day experiences of a young man in the U.S. Navy during an interesting period of time. A quick and fun read.

About the Author
Following his retirement from the U.S. Department of State, Nick and his wife, Pat (a multi-media artist) moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where he began a second career as a photographer and a professional diver. Nick continues to work and travel throughout the world, giving him the opportunity to photograph a wide array of countries and peoples and do underwater photography at some of the best dive locations in the world. He is a member of a number of art groups and displays his photography at local galleries in the Myrtle Beach area. Ribbon Winner in the Seacoast Artist Guild’s 2012 & 2014 Fall Art Shows and the 2014 WACG Fall Art Show. Nick’s photography was juried into the 2014 Wilmington Art Show, the 2013 and 2014 WACG Art Shows at the Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, the 2014 Greenvile, SC Artist’s Guild Fall Show, the 2014 Florence Art Alliance’s Fall Show and the 2014 ARTFIELDS Show at Lake City, SC. Nick received an Honorable Mention Award in the 2014 New York Center for Photographic Arts “Animals” Exhibition. He was selected in 2014 to be an Artist-in-Residence for the State of South Carolina State Park Service and recently became a Field Contributor for Nature Photography Magazine. In 2014 Nick published “Masai Mara-A Photographic Safari” and “ Masai Mara Revisited” which are available on Amazon.com. and Presto Books. In 2014 he also published an autobiography entitled “FOR GOD AND COUNTRY” –Memories of a Diplomatic Security Service Special Agent. He has held a number of benefit art shows for the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and continues to promote saving African wildlife and banning the sale of ivory throughout the world.
