Ieyasu comes to the greatest difficulty of his life

"Path of the Assassin, Volume 6: Life's Greatest Difficulty" consists mostly of the single epic story that gives the volume its title. Things are going well for Ieyasu, who it should be remembered is only 22-years-old at this point in his journey towards becoming Shogun and only now beginning to mull over taking the name Tokugawa. Meanwhile, Hatori Hanzo and Tsukumo have been away from their master, battling the ninja Kite Kato. Then Ieyasu comes to the event that he would speak of later as being the greatst difficulty of his life. Ieyasu had a fort built in Sasaki by Yahgi River, and now that it is completed he sets out to get some rice to stockpile at the fort, unaware that this simple act will stir up insurrections all over Mikawa, threatening not only his power but also his very life.

This classic samurai series from writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goecki Kojima, originally published in Japan under the title "Hanzo no Mon," is being published in 15 volumes by Dark Horse. Because of its focus on Ieyasu and Hanzo, this magna is more historical in nature than either "Lone Wolf & Cub" or "Samurai Executioner." At this point we are in the early 1560s, as Ieyasu battles the military forces of the Mikawa Monto, a group of warrior monks, who refused to obey his orders. Again the relationship between master and servant is defined as the difference between strategy and tactics: as the insurrections begin, Ieyasu sees the big picture, and knows it is up to Hanzo to do something to make the clogged river flow again (Remember, the magna is described as being about "Lifelong friends, with the same dreams, striving to grow into a rising river"). But this time, when the stakes are the highest they have been so far, Hanzo finds his efforts backfiring. In addition to the main plotline, Iyesau's wife sends her husband a strange message and Hanzo meets up again with Toma Eno, another suppa, who makes a strange request. Both of these sequences remind us that this story is far from over, although since Iyesau was 60 when he was named Shogun by the Emperor, I have to assume this magna will end decades short of that pivotal moment in Japanese history.

The second story here, "Changing Countenance," either constitutes an epilogue to this "Chapter on Shogyo Mujo," or is an interlude before the next story. It is not until Path of the Assassin Volume 7, Center of the World comes out in a couple of months that we will learn if the chapter continues or if Koike and Kojima are beginning the next one. A young girl wants to plead upon her death for Ieyasu to come and visit her dying father, a nameless, small "ashigaru" (foot solider of medieval Japan), who has a lesson to teach his master regarding the truth that can be read in the faces of men. The title comes from a series of masks the dying man has carved, to illustrate his point. Whether this presages specific events to come or is just a philosophical point raised in general, remains to be seen.

This pocket-sized magna format is oriented in the right-to-left reading format used by the creators, and you should have no problem with this approach by the time you are this far into the series. However, I wish I knew more about how these stories were originally published in Japan. A 282 page story in an American comic is going to run pretty much for a year divided into issues containing the same number of pages, unless it is published as a graphic novel. But "Life's Greatest Difficulty" is presented as just one giant story, even though there are clearly "episodes" within the framework of the larger narrative. When a particular "chapter" is broken into two parts in these Dark Horse volumes, ending one volume and beginning the next, I have assumed that these were artificial breaks, but I really do not know. Dark Horse could just be following what Koike and Kojima did for all I know. I am not complaining, because without the strictures of usual comic books, each of these stories is as long as Koike and Kojima need them to be, a fact amply demonstrated by the two stories in this particular volume.

I've been a long time collecter or almost everything that Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima have done, even some books and novels that were never released in the USA or translated into English. Their creative story lines and tradtional style of graphics are just outstanding!

A unique blend of action, politics and philosphy

If you haven't picked up this series yet, START! ...but don't start here. Go back to volume 1. Forget what you think about Japanese manga, and put aside comparisons to Koike's more famous work, "Lone Wolf and Cub" (written before this series) Path of the Assassin is a rare balance of action and insight into Japanese history, politics and samurai culture typical for Koike, but unique to "action" manga. Dont' get me wrong, nothing dazzles like a good super ninja story, and Koike keeps it rolling, but this ninja tale precedes a lot of later ninja tales (this one written in the 1970's) and has no direct successors except Koike himself. Later action manga might be splashier and depend on stereotypes and over top violence, but early Koike and Kojima cannot be beat for believable, human stories that are profound intellectually and emotionally, and always visually compelling. It is amazing to me that this complex story of medieval Japan is made comprehensible to Western readers simply by its great characterization. I know I don't truly understand Japanese culture, but Koike makes me think I do. Highly recommended.

Easy reading but not boring

This little book cleared up a lot of my questions about the “end times”. The research is credible with none of usual hype; everything can be verified with Google searches of star and planet charts. Easy reading but not boring; looking forward to his second book.

Thought provoking

I study many end times related themes and while searching for more research information on amazon books I came across this book by an author I had no prior knowledge of. He presents his material well and presented some new material and interpretations I have not come across before. I think he may be right on on dome things and a few other points who can say for certain until things work themselves out according to God's own timetable. I'm hoping we don't have that much time left in the world as I for one am ready to go! It is very worthwhile reading and I highly recommend it to others and plan to share with my family and encourage them to read as well. I have always wondered what the sign of the son of man referred to. Could it be referring to this particular formation referred to in the book of revelation described so well in this book?

Great for any traveler

This is a well-made notebook/journal. It is bound so the pages DON'T fall out easily. In fact, the pages are NOT perforated at the inner edge to make it easy for them to be torn out of the notebook.

The pages are a nice quality paper, lined on both sides with grey lines to make it easier to write in straight lines plus the pages are numbered bottom center. There is a St. Augustine quote "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page." on the first page of the notebook otherwise the pages are blank other than the lines.

I am using this as a travel journal to keep track of the trips we take in our new travel trailer. It is the perfect size (6"x9") to either keep in a cupboard in the trailer out of the way or in my purse. It doesn't take up much room.

The graphics showing an old-time map are classy looking and the cover has kind of a slick finish (without being shiny) that make it easy to wipe off.

Nice journal

This is a small (6” X 9”) paperback journal. The cover is a world map print design, and the inside consists of 140 ruled pages. It’s small enough to slip into a purse or backpack, and the lines are spaced far enough apart to write easily. Although I would prefer a ring-binder so the pages would lie flat, making it easier to write in the book, it’s well-made and attractive.

Overall, I like it and I like the quote in the beginning of the journal. I will say it's a bit flimsy, in the sense that the cover/back are not super strong and will bend, but overall it's really neat and well designed. Has more of college-line/ruled so it's nice to write in as opposed to other journals where the lines are really close together.

Fabulous!

The enchanting matchmaker Lauren Holbrook is back, better than ever in the sequel to the brilliant Missmatch!

Riding the wave of her successful pairing of her work colleague and Bible Study leader, Lauren sets her sights on her hapless single friends, confident she can lead them into their happily ever after.

While consuming copious amounts of coffee and cheesecake, Lauren plots to bring her favourite barrista, Shawn into both wedded bliss with newcomer, Hallie and belief in God, preferably in reverse order!

Lauren's life is suddenly complicated when her widowed Dad announces he is off to a singles retreat, Meet Your Match in Michigan, construction worker Ryan Palmer causes flutters in her stomach when he smiles and then there is Brandon Knox, her best buddy in the whole world without a girl of his own ~ what's a girl to do?!

Erynn Mangum has done it again! Rematch is wonderful, replete with sparkling wit, gregarious and uplifting characters and a story that will leave you with a happy heart. Lauren's stellar voice continues to shine brightly and despite her meddling, you can't help but love her. Her naivety in her own love life is delightful and I can't wait to see how Erynn resolves that. Lauren's friends and family are just as appealing each epitomising integrity yet with enough foibles to be realistic. The final scene is a treasure ~ a secret mission with code names Vizzini and Inigo was the icing on the cake! All that was left for me to do was close the book and watch Pride & Prejudice, which I did. Read Rematch and you will understand why! This is one of those unique books that can be read and enjoyed by anyone, from the teen years and beyond!

It Is All About Coffee

"It began with a scowl," and so it should, it would seem, as the coffee supply has mysteriously disappeared. Coffee, the reader will quickly discover is the life giving for Erynn Mangum's alter ego Lauren Holbrook. I have never seen the word coffee used so many times in one novel.

I approached this novel cautiously. It is a Chick Lit novel and there are many of the typical things that you expect to find in the genre. Knowing that some people enjoy the genre more than I, I took this into account as I opened the cover. As supper sizzled in a skillet on the stove I began to read, making it through three chapters by the time I sat down to eat a hamburger and Pringles.

Four hours later, I finished the book. Most of the book is dialog. Other than that, the book is written in first person present tense. Overall, the book is very believable and I even laughed at a few things. In this book, Laurie continues her quest to unite singles into couples, but she becomes concerned about the possibility of her nearly fifty-year-old father getting married. That issue is the major conflict in the book. The rest is straightforward. Laurie sees a couple that needs to be matched up and she gets them together with little to no conflict. So, in looking at how the main character is changed by the events of the story, it is an internal struggle for Laurie and her view of her relationship with her father.

There is one thing that this novel does very well. It does not go out of its way in an attempt to make it a Christian novel. Yes, there are Christian elements to it, but the reader is not left with the feeling that the author wrote a non-Christian novel and then added the Christian stuff to it.

The book isn't perfect. There were a few actions by some of the characters that seemed to be used more frequently than they should have been. I won't ruin the book for everyone by saying what they were. Other people may not be a nitpicky as I am.

I can't be too hard on this book, there were some very marked similarities between this book and my own book, Searching for Mom. Lauren and Sara have both lost a mother, though they have different opinions about this. Both are matchmakers, of sorts. Even some of the book and movie references are the same. So it I go too far with my criticism I will probably just end up criticizing myself.

Lauren and her friends are a riot!

Erynn Mangum has delivered another winner! Lauren and all her friends are back in this second installment in the Lauren Holbrook trilogy. There's more banter, more coffee, more chocolate, and yes, of course there is more matchmaking to be done!

One (of the many) things I really enjoyed is the sibling relationships that are shown. There are several pairs of siblings in Lauren's circle of friends, and Lauren's two sisters also have a part in the story. All of these relationships translate so well onto paper, with all the craziness, care, and teasing of close brothers and sisters. It's this exact family dynamic that is missing from many books today, but thankfully this series has it in spades!

Being the middle book in the trilogy, it's becoming subtly obvious that Ryan's feelings for Lauren are the long-term kind, but ironically, Lauren, the matchmaker extraordinaire, simply can't see it. Though she likes hanging out with Ryan and dating in their somewhat casual way, she doesn't know exactly where they stand. Ryan is so sweet to her, and it's just so much fun to watch his efforts and her cluelessness.

As a Christian, I know that God is sovereign and is the author of any future relationships I may have, however, I sort of hope my happy ending is written in the style of an Erynn Mangum novel. :) There's just so much to like about her characters. If you like chick-lit and haven't yet read this series, what are you waiting for!?
