Harrowing read

I'm not sure I can say I 'liked' this book as I can't even begin to imagine how it feels to lose a child in such a brutal way, let alone to write about it. The tale is devastatingly sad but a compelling read to see how one psychopathic teenager was finally jailed. It wasn't the best edited book in the world as the narrative was often repetitive but, despite that, it makes chilling and interesting reading. I feel for the author and all her family who have to live without their beautiful daughter.

About the Book...

When The Lost Scrolls ended, it left a gaping hole wide enough to drive another story through. This is the tale that emerged. Part of the impetus in writing it came from "leftovers": bits of research I hadn't been able to include in the original story. Chief among these leftovers was the Legend of the Seven Sleepers. This is a tale found in both Christian myths from the early Middle Ages as well as in the Qu'ran, suggesting it was a tale widely known by the time of Muhammad.

Of course, in my retasking of this myth, it found quite a different expression, and has resurfaced in the third book in the series, The Music of the Spheres (in production).

What I particularly enjoyed about crafting this tale was the weaving together of historical facts and creating a puzzle for my characters to solve. This isn't as easy as it sounds, especially given the constraints of actual history. In fact, I remember the novel come to a screeching halt right around the time the different teams arrived in Bruges, because I had no idea what the actual puzzle would be, and neither could I continue the story without it, because the rest of the plot depended entirely on what the puzzle itself would reveal. I remained stumped for months, and finally moved on to other works until the solution presented itself. Even then, I still found the story a bit thin, and needed to strengthen a few of the newer characters to compensate.

Michael J. Scott writes fiction that doesn't shy away from hard questions or dicey situations. He treats his characters like real people with real flaws who sometimes do wrong and stupid things--especially when they're trying to do the right thing.

His interests range from the erosion of the American family, socio-political unrest in the U.S. that threatens to break into civil war, UFO's, adventures in Biblical and Christian archaeology, dystopias, sword and sorcery fantasy, to getting inside the mind of a serial killer.

What I loved most about this book is the fact that

What I loved most about this book is the fact that, despite an overloaded schedule at the moment, I kept making time to get back into the world of Dr. Munro, Izzy & Sean, Dr. Bryce & the Schaumbergs, the millennia-old corporation, Triprimacon, and Brother Joseph and Nicky. Michael does such a great job of character development and story telling, the reader is compelled to return (or just keep going) to find out what happens next! Several concurrent story lines all leading to one final, exciting conclusion. I love the history told through the story, and I also enjoyed the nod to his next book, Nicholas, in some of the characters' names and locations and stories told here, too. Looking forward to his next Jonathan Munro adventure!

Highly Recommended for both the Travel Addict and the Armchair Traveler

Luke Armstrong’s travelogue, based on his nomadic experiences, is one that anyone with a sense of adventure can appreciate. Not only does he take you to exotic places, where you’ll encounter people from various cultures that you would love to meet yourself, but he also leaves you with thoughts about what a wonderful world we live in.
The quest for something different started when Luke was three, which he relates at the beginning of his book. It was the first time he hit the road. At three! The need to explore is obviously in Luke’s blood, and I’m glad he’s taken the time to share what he’s discovered.
I especially enjoyed the story of the girl in Kenya who wouldn’t go home, his challenges with a goat harp, the Iceland penis museum (you’ve got to read this one), his experience as an insect smuggler, how he handled the dangerous travelers he encountered on a train, his paranoid adventures in Morocco (courtesy of powerful weed), a karaoke convention (who would’ve thought?), a confusing mariachi band that wouldn’t give up, and a tailor extraordinaire in Guatemala. And there is so much more. His humanity shines through in the love life he reveals and the horrors he’s witnessed. He delivers one surprising anecdote after another, with both candor and a sense of humor.
I highly recommend this book for both the travel addict and the armchair traveler regardless of age.

Buy this book - a road map to what travel literature should be

the author is a friend of friends and they recommended it. I assumed it would be amusing but no more. I was wrong - thoroughly blown away. Not only can the guy write and tell a story (Dangerous Strangers on a Train in Kenya is gripping and tense - even though nothing actually "happens") with wit (The Amazing Journey of the Avocado had me actually laughing aloud), but there is a point to each story beyond drawing attention to his own considerable narrative skills. A hike up a mountain in Guatemala becomes an opportunity to see the world from that vantage point. Every adventure is connected to a bigger picture. It is travel as experience, not "look at all the cool places I've been that you haven't" that characterizes so much travel lit. The author even includes an acknowledgement of his own position as a white American (his mantra "I'm sorry: I'm a stupid gringo and everything confuses me" has become my own travel battle cry) and he looks at the limits of the nomadic experience beyond the romance: a paragraph on the melancholia of the aging nomads who have stayed on the road too long and out-traveled their youthful ideals (concluding a reminiscence of deciding to leave an island paradise in Colombia) is nothing short of stunning in its honest eloquence worthy of a writer twice his age. Lovely Read.

Luke's book is hilarious, touching, tense, as well as endlessly and effortlessly readable, and all of it presented if succinct vignettes that draw you in quickly and never overstay their welcome. From selling cigarettes in London, being mauled by a rabid raccoon, arguing with Kenyan police, to fulfilling the dearest wishes of a dead relative, all of the stories have dramatic heft without being heavy handed, and are always buoyed by the author's playfulness and sense of humor. It's also all arranged in a cohesive thematic arc that gives depth to that tremendous variety of stories at hand. Want to laugh? Get scared? Ruminate on the innate connections we make with people and the world around us just by engaging the life that is set before us? Well, you'll do all of that, and then get inspired to get out there and live out loud the way Armstrong has.

About the Author
Born in the famed battle town of Hastings, England, Nathan Dylan Goodwin has always had a passion for writing in one form or another. Having gained a 2:1 degree in Radio, Film and Television studies, Nathan went on to gain a Masters degree in Creative Writing, from Canterbury Christ Church University. Nathan started his writing career with non-fiction, his first book 'Hastings at War' being published in May 2005. This was followed by three further local history books pertaining to the area around his home town of Hastings. His first forays into fiction writing culminated in the publication in 2013 of Hiding the Past (a genealogical crime mystery novel). This was followed in 2014 by the second book in the series, The Lost Ancestor. The first Morton Farrier novella - The Orange Lilies - was published 1st December 2014. In his mid-thirties, Nathan enjoys skiing, reading, genealogy, writing and time with his family and young son. That about sums it up!

The Orange Lilies

I discovered Nathan Dylan Goodwin's The Orange Lilies while browsing the Kindle Unlimited catalog. None of my Goodreads contacts had read the novella and the Amazon reviews weren't particularly detailed, but the premise held promise and I decided to give it shot.

Before I get too far ahead of myself, I want to make a couple of things perfectly clear. The Orange Lilies is book 2.5 of Goodwin's Forensic Genealogist series, but it can be read as a standalone. I know because it's the first I picked up. It's also a bit of a slow starter so don't toss it aside if you aren't captivated by the end of chapter one. Here again folks, I'm speaking from experience.

Despite being a mere one hundred pages in length, the book is filled with several wonderful characters. Charlie, Nellie, Margaret and Morton in particular struck a chord with me. They each enjoy relatively modest face time with the reader, but they feel fresh and original nonetheless.

Goodwin's descriptions of the Western front are brilliant. The author worked far more detail into the piece than I'd expected and I was quite impressed with his realistic portrayal life at the front. From the mud and blood to the mental fatigue and gallows humor of those struggling to survive the trenches, these scenes demonstrated both Goodwin's skill and dedication to authenticity.

The modern day story line is equally captivating. The multi-generational mystery of family secrets took longer for me to appreciate, but as the pieces fell into place, I recognized a growing fascination with the puzzle that represents Morton's personal history.

Highly recommended to fans of both historic and contemporary fiction.

A Liberating Experience.

I loved the prayers, invocations and rituals in this book. well researched my only beef is Lucifer being written from such a patriarchal bent, Lucifer is female going back to Inanna of the Babylonian stories in the Gilgamesh epics she is the Morning star of Venus. I wish women would reclaim Lucifer and not continue with the patriarchal demonetization of her, using the rituals, prayers and invocations in this book has taken my path with Lucifer to another level, working with her is by far the most exciting and astounding experience and trust I have had many on my spiritual path. with Lucifer manifestation happen almost overnight, you actually see tangible results its been mind blowing and liberating.

Rites of Lucifer is a fantastic read full of insight

Rites of Lucifer is a fantastic read full of insight, useful info and invocations of various masks of Lucifer. The book is rather short, at only 111 pages of material, but this is definitely a book I'll read multiple times. Rites of Lucifer is not particularly for beginners however, as you are expected to have some basic knowledge and fundamentals down, such as a basic understanding of the Qliphoth, ritual preparation/conducting and meditation. If you already have some fundamentals in place however, this is a great little book with enough material to practice for some time.

My only gripe is there is no hardcover available for this text, although I assume it's due to how small the volume is. Other than that, 5 stars.
