Reverse Your Hangers!

There's nothing more frustrating then getting advice from someone who hasn't walked the walk. Betsy and Warren are the exact opposite of this--having decluttered and simplified their life for their amazing travel journeys (you really need to read their other book Dream-Save-Do, a fascinating and inspiring read, to get the full story).

Even as a reformed packrat I found tons of great ideas to get rid of the things around me just taking up space and not adding anything to my life. And it doesn't have to be a 3 week project, it can be as easy as doing just one of their exercises to get started. I went immediately to my closet and did their "reversed hangers" exercise, and as I was doing it already intuitively knew that about 30% of my shirts and sportcoats are going to end up in the goodwill pile after this experiment is over.

The kitchen pantry and utensil drawers are next!

Great book, easy read, practical advice--thanks guys and hope the journey is going well!

THE How to De-Clutter and Reclaim Your Home Book

I have been doing a bit of research as of late on the actual 'how to's' of decluttering. So many books and resources talk about the benefits of doing it but very few tell you actually 'how to do it'. Getting Rid of It gives you step by step details on not only how to slowly (and comfortably) start sorting through your stuff but how to sell it, donate it and get rid of it through a number of different channels and creative ways. It is the official no more excuses guide to reclaiming your home for clutter. A serious must read for anyone ready to be rid of the clutter.

Don't get rid of this book

There are many books on getting rid of the clutter in your life. The authors have a different take on things. They downsized their lives in order to raise money for the ability to travel the world without having to work.
I hate tag sales, but their suggestions for using Craig's List and eBay to sell unwanted items as soon as you know you don't need/want them anymore were great -- eliminates the clutter immediately and gets some cash in your hand.

He had me at "The Long Run"...

I first found Mishka's work when I was looking for stories of recovery from alcoholism, myself being deep in the throes of it for many years. I found a kindred spirit in him, we shared very similar experiences and almost an unquenchable thirst for alcohol, but a disdain for conventional recovery methods (i.e. AA). I have read that story at least 6 times over the past 2 years, it still inspires me. BUT, the bonus in finding him via that book were the other books. I have read all of his published writings now, and can assure you there is not much else out there with the same raw emotion, subtle humor and downright sadness he manages to capture in his work. This collection allows you the ability to get them all at once for a reasonable price - and trust me, after you read the first you're going to be back buying them all anyways so save yourself some coin - it is the holidays, you know. In fact, buy it for someone FOR the holidays.

Not all of the stories are about addiction and recovery, or about running - but rather funny/sad/scary tales from the never boring life of one Mishka Shubaly.

Ive read each kindle single at least twice and every time find new joy and discoveries

Even though I read all of these when they came out as Kindle Singles, I still had to get the book. Of course the foreword by Jeff Bezos piqued my interest, and there is the part of me that is a "completist" so I wanted to get this collection in print. But mostly it's because these stories hold up so well to re-reading. The turns of phrase, the way his words make you examine your own psyche, and the powerful depths he mines into his own soul all make for exciting re-reads... Ive read each kindle single at least twice and every time find new joy and discoveries. Really looking forward to reading these on the printed page!

Funny. Deep. Poignant and moving, especially if you can relate from the point of view of a person in recovery (or one who might think they need to walk that path). As an amateur athlete, I appreciated how Mishka replaced certain aspects of his life that were detrimental with some that were positive. A good read indeed.

An Oft-Interesting Labor of Love (3.5 stars)

There are problems with Nevin Martell's book, Looking for Calvin and Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and His Revolutionary Comic Strip. While the title encourages the reader to think he or she will be reading the story of how Calvin and Hobbes came to be, what we get instead is one man's personal odyssey to score an interview with the elusive creator of the strip, Bill Watterson. It's true that we DO get to read the results of Martell's research (which include lots of tidbits regarding the aforementioned story), and it's often interesting. However, the book suffers from the plethora of personal asides about his wife, prior writing projects, and rock star interviews Martell had done.

Another problem rises due to the fact that Bill Watterson owns "Calvin and Hobbes" lock, stock and barrel. As a result, there are no comics printed in the book. Instead, Martell resorts to taking page upon page to describe individual strips, from first panel to last. While I acknowledge that this wasn't the author's fault, it adds a level of tedium to some sections of the book.

And yet another issue with the book comes in the writing itself. Martell primarily writes for magazines, and that's how this book reads: as a series of magazine articles on the same subject, rather than as a coherent whole. He repeats quotes from earlier parts of the book, summarizes earlier chapters in later ones, and so on. This would be fine if we were reading the book one chapter at a time over several weeks or months, but it doesn't work in book form. Also, his description is sometimes clumsy: "Everything was drenched in pure white, as if God had forgotten to shake the Earth as he would a snow globe." That's a long way to go for a simple image. In addition, Martell sometimes makes errors when discussing the comics themselves. When talking about Calvin's use of the cardboard box (one of the great conventions of the strip), he states that the Atomic Cerebral Enhance-O-Tron is one of the box's many uses. Well, the ACE was a colander that Calvin put on his head. A small error to be sure, but one that a fan will easily catch. Several more are scattered through the book.

However, the book is worth reading. His interviews with Watterson associates are illuminating, and his chapter on how Calvin and Hobbes influenced other comic artists is a must. He rounds up a who's who of current and former comic artists and syndicate bigwigs for these chapters. No one can fault the man's legwork.

Overall, I'm not sorry I read it. It was obviously a labor of love for Martell, and that comes through on every page. The problem is, that often comes through too strongly. It's interesting, but not essential to ones' appreciation for, or understanding of, the wonder that was Calvin and Hobbes. 3.5 stars.

Apparently, we have moved through denial, anger, and bargaining; we have survived the deep depression and now have reached acceptance--there will be no more Calvin and Hobbes. It is no wonder that Bill Watterson wants us all to go away, he gave birth to a wonderful creation but it lived its natural life and passed on. It is not coming back and let's be honest, we aren't so much interested in Mr. Watterson as we are in somehow squeezing out more of the joy he brought to us with Calvin and Hobbes. To this end, Mr. Martell tells the story of his attempt to recapture the joy of Calvin and Hobbes by coming to understand something more about its creator. Intriguingly, the book ends up teaching us more about life than about either Mr. Watterson or his creation.

Calvin and Hobbes, alas, is dead. I count myself as fortunate enough to have lived in a world where every morning brought a new Calvin strip. My children need not wait; they can merely rip through the complete work by taking down my well-thumbed books off of the shelf. I think it is unanimous that Calvin and Hobbes ranks as one of the great creations and it seems to annoy folks that the creator survives. Sure, we can always revisit Calvin, but the experience is fraught with a kind of ineffable sadness; rather like remembering happy times with a parent or friend who has passed away. As all great art does, Mr. Watterson's efforts have profoundly changed and affected all who encounter them and it is quite understandable that he has no desire to assist us in dealing with the emotions engendered by his unique exploration of life as Calvin and Hobbes spoke on so many different levels to so many people.

The value of Mr. Martell's fine effort is found in the examination of how to deal with loss and change. It is literally the story of bereavement and the finding of joy in what remains. Mr. Watterson tapped into something great and was pleased to share his talents; now, the man wishes to be left alone to enjoy life's journey in his own private manner. There is a lesson to be had in Mr. Watterson's devoted efforts to keep Calvin and Hobbes the purest expression of its medium, free from exploitation and complications. It is the highest evidence of Mr. Watterson's wisdom that he recognizes and appreciates that fame and fortune are more punishment than reward and this volume succeeds by highlighting this fact.

In nothing do we honor Mr. Watterson's creation more than by recognizing that--it's a magical world, let's go exploring.

I expected this to be a book about Bill Watterson, and not a lengthy blog about the author. After the introduction, when Martell says he would have to write the book as though the author were dead, he should have subsided mentioning trying getting in contact with Watterson, and he should have adopted a more formal, respectful tone, rather than the whiny, redundant, "why won't you talk to me?!"

The book is some two-hundred pages of fillers. Many vague quotes and anecdotes could have been cut. Most of Martell's material comes from very polite reaction stories, lacking depth and uniqueness.

That said, the quotes from Watterson--which can be found in full in /his/ books--provided perspective as to why he has made the choices he did. It is almost funny, that Martell, with his wealth of resources, was unable to provide any insight into his subject. It seems that Watterson has already explained everything. Why grant further interviews just to repeat yourself? Because this magazine wants their own? So this guy can put his name on it? Answers to why he refused commercialization, further work, and interviews have already been provided. From my understanding, Watterson is not a grouchy, old man--he is a serious writer, and when he finds subjects he is passionate about--say old comics that have lost relevancy but remain in publication for profits--he speaks on it. I see him as more selective than reclusive.

When Martell writes about Watterson's process, he mentions a quality filter on anything that left the drawing room; this is one of many lessons which Martell should have taken away from his own project. Had the book been rewritten with the tools obtained--instead of being about the search for tools--I think this could have been an excellent read.

I believe Bill Watterson has chosen intelligently in his non-participation with /Looking for Calvin and Hobbes/.

My very favorite! (But I say that after I finish every book) I started and finished this story in a single sitting, powerless to move. Engrossing, creepy, entertaining, and worth my time. I highly, highly recommend it!

Judi is so positive, and so frank and humorous it lifted my spirit to read her book.

Who wouldn't be amused by reading how Judi had her "Boob job", or moved by how she survived her husband's death etc...There are so many gems in there that I found myself going back to it for different anecdotes to see how Judi would say "yes" to life!

Off road, he is a music critic for Down Beat, and writes about all forms of American culture for Salon, Esquire and his home-town paper The San Francisco Examiner. He confesses that he traded in his orange 1974 Bug -- now up on blocks -- for a new silver Beetle.

BASSIST RON CARTER'S BOOK-AN INSIDE LOOK AT A MASTER

Trade size.425 pages,not including acknowledgments or index. There is an extensive selected discography of Carter's work. There are also appendices which includes comments and opinions from other musicians,awards won by Carter,and a section of infrequently asked questions,which give even more insight into Carter's life. There is an introduction by Nat Hentoff,one of the premier jazz writers and critics. Periodically throughout there are a number of black and white photographs which add to the overall story. THIS BOOK IS STILL AVAILABLE.

This is an informative,well written book by Dan Ouellette,on one of the premier bassists of this or any other time. Carter has played and recorded with most,if not all,the jazz heavyweights of the Twentieth Century. He has played on so many recording dates,that he long ago lost count. He is also a composer of note. Look at virtually any good jazz recording from the great era of jazz,and you'll probably see Carter's name listed on the credits. He has played/recorded with Nat Adderely,Gene Ammons,George Benson,Stanley Turrentine,and Miles Davis,among many others,and has recorded a number of albums as a leader.

The book itself is laid out more or less chronologically,starting with Carter's early years,and then proceeds through his music education,and then into his working years as a bassist. Along the way there are a number of small tales woven into the main story,which give a better insight into the times and Carter's history. Here is truly an insider's view of jazz and the people who make it. Anyone with a passing knowledge of jazz musicians will recognize many names throughout this captivating book. There is an extensive section on Miles Davis,and how Carter came to play with this jazz icon. From the first meeting with Davis,to Carter's eventual departure (he wanted to stay home with his children),there is good insight into both Carter and Davis and the inner workings of this famous,historic band. From there the book continues into Carter's work with Creed Taylor of CTI Records. When CTI finally imploded,Carter moved over to Orrin Keepnews's Milestone Records label,and from there to an EMI label in Japan and then to the much heralded Blue Note Records label,and,finally,into Carter's free lance years. From there he talks about his classical and movie work. All through this section of the book are well thought out,informative asides and views into both jazz and the inner workings of the business.

Another great part of this book,is that occasionally there are short written sections which are stories unto themselves. Rudy Van Gelder writes about Carter;there's the time Carter played with the great guitarist Bill Frisell;and the young bassist Christian McBride tells of his meeting with Carter and how he was influenced by him. All these stories are woven seamlessly into the body of the book,and give an even better picture of Ron Carter's influence on jazz and jazz musicians.

Anyone with an interest in jazz and,most importantly,an interest in one of the greatest musicians to have ever played in the genre will find this book informative,interesting,and just plain fun to read. To read this book is to open a window into the jazz world,when jazz was at one of it's most important points. Here,Carter's life and the lives of many other jazz musicians give a true insider's view of that world. We can be grateful that Carter's intelligence and insight,combined with Ouellette's writing skills have given us such a wonderful book.

This book probably cannot be found in your neighborhood bookstore. Its available through [...]. One great thing is that my copy is signed by both Carter and Ouellette. You can't find that everyday in a bookstore. And on that note(no pun intended),don't let this great book fall by the wayside-it deserves a place on your shelf of great books about jazz. And tell all your jazz friends.

Sets the standard

Its the music that matters and Ron Carter is amongst those that set the standard for jazz. Dan Oullette has set a new standard for jazz biography. As the previous review details, the biography has breadth and depth, it is biography, not hagiography. It is honest and the subject inspires.

This biography is well written and provides essential threads to discover all aspects of the Carter musical library as well as works by many others. The Miles Davis period is addressed directly and powerfully but given balance and context as a milestone and watershed not the be all and end all of Ron Carter.

Equally important, we are, to the extent a biography can, given an insight into the subject and his path to success. We learn much more than any personal development literature can tell us. Carter models the virtues of leadership, professionalism, practice, authenticity, self awareness and trusting his colleagues. His musical journey speaks in the right notes.

The finest book on bass playing ever!!!

This is simply the finest book on a bass player's life and career that I have ever read, edging out George Duvivier's book slightly since he did not live to see it published and was not as detailed as this one is. This one has a lot of Ron's comments and observations.It covers all of Carter's career from his high school, college and professional endeavors and in great details, many of which will be new to even the most avid Carter fan. There is absolutely no question that Carter is far and away the most recorded person in the history of planet earth in ANY genre of music and he belongs in the Guiness Book of Records for this. He has amassed over 3000 recordings to date and guess what? He is still at it at the age of 76 and going very strong. Any luminary that was around when he was he played with: We all know his time with Miles Davis but he also played with people like: Kenny Burrell,Bobby Timmons, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Don Cherry, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Sonny Clark, Dexter Gordon, Thelonious Monk,Oscar Peterson, Booker Ervin, John Coltrane, Elvin Jones, Alice Coltrane, Benny Golson,Jo Jones,Phil Woods, Joe Henderson, Andrew Hill, Harumi Kaneko, Red Garland, Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Chico Hamilton, Oliver Nelson, George Duvivier, King Curtis,Wayne Shorter, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Philly Joe Jones, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley, Art Blakey, Kenny Dorham, Lockjaw Davis, Johnny Griffin, Shirley Scott,Blue Mitchell, Wynton Kelly, Milt Jackson, Hank Crawford, Esther Phillips,Hank Jones,Houston Person, Joey DeFransesco, Helen Merrill and this is just a good month for him. The book details his experiences with the people he played with, the music structures, his issues with being recognized, his cello work early on and the author really probes into his musical genius and the book is a very pleasant read. I most highly recommend it to any person who wants to look into the life of a master musician like Ron is. I have had the pleasure of meeting him 3 or 4 times and he is always so gracious to me and signs my records and Downbeat magazines, takes the time to talk to me and makes me feel like he really appreciates me buying his music. I own over 800 of his recordings, which is of course, just a drop in the bucket of his total output but I am trying to get as many as I can his work is more amazing that you can realize.

The book really details some new items to me like his work with Monk in 1962 and having to ride to Philly from NYC after school 5 days a week with the Baroness's Rolls Royce, having almost come to blows with Pianist Harold Mabern over a disagreement of the way some music should be played and subbing for Ray Brown in the Oscar Peterson trio while he went to school in Eastman in Rochester and what happened afterwards (get the book to see what it was) among other tidbits. Most fascinating is his ongoing dealings with Christian McBride, again the book details how they got along and what Christian was able to pick up from him while learning to be the great bassist he obviously is now. In short, even though it is expensive and a bit hard to find, get this book right away if you have even a remote interest in jazz, it is fantastic. I am lucky enough to have 2 autographed copies of the book the first edition and the second one he brushed up and put out himself, I will treasure these forever.
