Edogawa Rampo (pseudonym of Hirai Taro, 1894-1965) is the acknowledged grand master of Japan's golden age of crime and mystery fiction. He is also a major writer in the tradition of Japanese Modernism, and exerts a massive influence on the popular and literary culture of today's Japan.

Not bad

Not bad, but was expecting better. I will be checking out the more famous stories by this author because, as it says in the title and at the beginning of this book, these are the early works that even he himself thinks were "failures." Want to say that the print, paper and cover quality, and the book's size are in my opinion perfect; I wish every book was like this. However, there are more typos than I want to see and this collection should have included "The Psychological Test" (心理試験) so as to contain the first five works featuring this character. I understand that it has been translated and published elsewhere, but that is not a good enough reason.

Rampo is one of greatest writers within the mystery genre and his adaptation of a basically western genre to modernizing Japan in the Taisho period is fascinating.This anthology of a number of his earliest works shows this process as it began. The short stories are sometimes a bit awkward in working out the mechanics of the genre, but nonetheless intriguing for the way they show Rampo's origins. The longer novella The Dwarf is a near masterpiece, inticate and sometimes surreal in its plotting grostesque and disturbing in its character and events.

I stumbled across Vincent Cheung while scrolling through the search hits on Amazon's Kindle store. I never heard of him before. But the ratings were pretty good and the Kindle edition was reasonably priced so I took a chance. Cheung is a little caustic and abrasive here and there, but I happen to like "hard preaching." He does seem to have a good handle on Paul's letter to the Colossians. He believes Colossians is one of those biblical documents that can deliver its message without a commanding knowledge of the circumstances under which Paul wrote. In other words, the reader needn't bother spending inordinate time sifting through the Gnostic heresies of the second century under the misguided notion that Colossians was addressed to Christians falling under the influence of early Gnostic philosophers. Personally, I think he's right. As I write this review, I haven't read Cheung's entire book. But I'm sufficiently impressed thus far.

I loved, LOVED this book! Heart-warming, poignant, funny (true) stories about the varied characters who come into a second hand bookshop in a Scottish city. Some come looking for books, some to hang out, some just for a free cup of tea. Beautifully written, with the added interest of many Scottish words which - if you can't figure them out - are translated in a glossary at the end of the book. I wanted to give this book to every bookshop in my town, telling them: "If you only offered free tea or coffee and comfortable places to sit down, you'd have a lot more customers and at least some of them would buy a book". For lovers of books and bookshops - HIGHLY recommended!
