It's ok
By No Nonsense
A pleasant read, but not nearly as satisfying as Cleeves' Shetland series. The plot is straightforward, standard cozy fare. Ramsay is described, but not given life. The two other main characters (who are more clearly drawn than Ramsay) are traditional 'nosy parkers' of the cozy genre. Worth $2.99, but not more.

A Lesson in Dying by Ann Cleeves
By Lorraine Talbot
This book has a very involved plot. Harold Medburn, headmaster of the village school, is found dead in the schoolyard on the night of a Halloween party. The police accuse his wife Kitty of killing her husband because he was about to leave her. The school's caretaker loved Kitty when they were young and wants to help her. He sets his daughter to asking questions. No one is sorry Harold is dead, he'd been a bully who took pleasure in tormenting his staff, even some parents. So the emphasis is not so much on solving his murder as exonerating Kitty. Insp. Ramsey, who usually has a more effective role in Cleeves' mysteries, is almost a secondary character in this one. But the portrayals of the townspeople are well drawn and I enjoyed the story for that and the murder was solved in a surprising fashion in the end.

Sharni was about to have lunch in a very trendy Sydney café when her dead husband walked in!

Her hands shook as they gripped the menu, her heart racing as she stared at Ray with shocked eyes.

Common sense finally kicked in, steadying her thudding heartbeat and whirling head.

Of course it wasn't Ray. Just some man who looked like him.

No, that was an understatement. A huge one. This man didn't just look like Ray, he was the spitting image of him. If she hadn't personally identified her husband's lifeless body five years ago, Sharni might have imagined he'd somehow not been on that horrible train that fateful day.

My God, he even walked like Ray!

Sharni's stunned gaze slavishly followed the man as he was shown to a table by the window, not all that far from her own. She kept trying to find something different, something out of sync with her mental memory of the husband she'd loved, and lost.

There was nothing.

Maybe this man was a little taller. And dressed a little better. That rusty brown suede jacket he was wearing looked very expensive. So did his cream silk shirt and smart fawn trousers.

Other than that, everything was the same. The same body shape. The same face. The same hair, both in colour and style.

Ray had had the loveliest hair: thick and wavy, a rich brown with a hint of red. He'd worn it longish, well down onto his shirt collar. She'd loved running her hands through his hair. He'd loved it, too.

Ray's double had exactly the same hair.

Sharni's mouth dried as she waited for him to sit down, waited to see if he would scoop his hair back from his forehead the way Ray had done every time he sat down.

When he did, Sharni only just stopped herself from crying out.

What cruel trick of fate was this?

She'd been doing so well lately, finally feeling capable of moving on with her life. She was working again. Okay, only part-time, but it was better than sitting at home all day.

This trip to Sydney had been another huge step for her. When her sister had given her a weekend package holiday in Sydney for her thirtieth birthday a couple of months ago, Sharni had initially shrunk from the idea.

'I can't leave Mozart for a whole weekend, Janice,' she'd said straight away, even though she knew this was just an excuse.

Admittedly, Mozart was not the easiest of dogs to mind. He still pined for Ray and could become snappy with other people. John, however—a local vet and Sharni's employer—had a way with the sad little terrier, and would happily mind him for Sharni.

Janice had seen through her excuse and worked on her quite relentlessly. So had Sharni's psychologist, a very kind lady who'd been treating her since she was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress a year ago.

Finally, Sharni agreed to go.

Getting on that damned train yesterday had been difficult, but she'd managed, though she'd grabbed for her mobile the moment the train had moved away from the station, fearing a panic attack coming on. Janice had calmed her down with some sympathetic but sensible talking, and by the time the train had arrived in Sydney Sharni had felt a little like her old confident self. Confident enough, anyway, to have her hair done first thing this morning in the hotel beauty salon before hitting the shops to buy some new clothes. Just casual ones, but more expensive than what she usually bought.

Money wasn't a problem, Sharni hardly having touched the three-million-dollar compensation payment she'd received eighteen months ago.

When she'd walked into this café shortly after one, dressed in one of her new outfits, her spirit had been much more optimistic, and her stomach free from anxiety.

Now, suddenly, her whole world had tipped out of kilter again.

She couldn't stop staring at the handsome stranger with his heartbreakingly familiar features.

Sharni had read somewhere that everyone had a double in this world, but this was way beyond being a double. If she hadn't known better, she would have said this man was Ray's twin brother.

Her mouth fell open at this last thought. Maybe he was! Ray, after all, had been adopted, and had never found out the circumstances behind his birth, saying he didn't want to know.

It wasn't unheard of for twins to be separated at birth and adopted out to different families. Could that be the solution to the startling evidence before her eyes?

She had to find out.

Had to.

Adrian had spotted the attractive brunette through the glass front of the café before coming inside. Despite his having a penchant for attractive brunettes, her presence had nothing to do with his entering. Since moving into his luxury apartment in Bortelli Tower a month ago, Adrian had become a regular at the ground-floor café, partly because of its convenience but mostly because the food was great.

The brunette had looked up when he'd walked in. Looked up and looked right at him. Hard.

At another time, Adrian might have encouraged her by returning solid eye contact, instead of averting his own gaze and pretending he hadn't noticed her interest.

Today, however, he was not in the mood for female company. He was still smarting over what Felicity had said to him last night.

'You should never have a real girlfriend,' she'd thrown at him after he'd been appallingly late for a dinner date. 'What you need is a mistress! Someone on tap who's just there for the sex. Someone you don't have to seriously care about, or consider. What I need is a man to love me with his whole heart and soul. The only thing you love, Adrian Palmer, is yourself, and your bloody buildings. I'm sick to death of waiting for you to ring me, or to show up. A good friend warned me about your reputation as a womanising workaholic, but I stupidly thought I could change you. I see now that I can't. So I'm out of here. Maybe one day you'll meet some girl who'll break your heart. I sure hope so.'

Being told he had a reputation as a womanising workaholic had shocked Adrian. So had the realisation that he'd hurt Felicity, whom he'd always thought was as career-orientated as he was. Obviously, she'd been more emotionally involved with him than he'd ever been with her.

He should have noticed, he supposed. But he hadn't.

He'd spent a sobering few hours last night, vowing to change his self-centred ways. Which was why he continued to ignore the brunette, despite his male ego being seriously stroked by the way her eyes followed him all the way across the room.

But when he sat down and scooped his hair back out of his own eyes, he caught a glimpse of her reflection in the window.

Wow, she wasn't just attractive. She was very attractive, with long glossy black hair framing a pretty face and big brown eyes, which remained flatteringly glued to him.

When he picked up the menu, Adrian couldn't help slanting a quick glance her way. Her eyes immediately dropped away, but not before he saw embarrassment in them.

Thank goodness she wasn't the bold type, he thought, otherwise he might be tempted to go over to her table and ask her to join him for lunch. Which didn't say much for his resolve to mend his womanising ways.

The brunette's action of getting up from her table and approaching his totally surprised Adrian.

'Um…excuse me,' she said, rather hesitantly.

He glanced up from where he'd been pretending to read the menu.

She was even prettier up close, with a heart-shaped face, clear skin, a sweet little turned-up nose and a very kissable mouth. Her figure wasn't half bad, either, shown to advantage in superbly tailored black trousers and a fitted pink jumper, which emphasised her full breasts and tiny waist.

'I'm sorry,' she went on, 'but I have a question which I simply must ask you. You'll probably think it very rude of me, but I…I need to know.'

'Know what?'

'Are you adopted, by any chance?'

Adrian blinked up at her. As a pick-up line, this was a highly original one and very effective. Far better than the old 'Have we met somewhere before?'

Maybe he'd misread her earlier. Maybe she was bold. But with enough womanly wiles to be subtle in pursuit of what she wanted.

That was one of the reasons he was drawn to brunettes. He'd always found them interesting. And more of a challenge.

Adrian was a man who liked a challenge.

'No, I'm definitely not,' he replied, and wondered what she'd do now.

She frowned, her expression bewildered.

'Are you absolutely sure? I mean…I don't want to cause trouble, but some parents don't tell their children they're adopted. Is there any chance at all that you could be?'

Adrian finally appreciated that she wasn't trying to pick him up. Her question was genuine, evidenced by the distress in her quite lovely brown eyes.

'I assure you that I am my parents' biological child, and I have photos to prove it. Besides,' he added, 'my father would never have kept something as important as that from me. He was a real stickler for honesty.'

'That's incredible, then,' she said. 'Truly incredible.'

What is?' he asked, curious now.

She shook her head. 'No matter,' she muttered rather dispiritedly. 'I'm sorry for bothering you.'

'No, don't go,' he said when she began to turn away. There was a mystery here to solve.

Adrian loved mysteries almost as much as challenges.

'You can't leave me up in the air like this. I need to know why you thought I was adopted. Sit down and tell me.'

She glanced worriedly back at her table where she'd left her handbag, along with several shopping bags.

'Why don't you get your things and join me for lunch?' he suggested.

She stared back at him for a long moment. 'I'm sorry. I…I don't think I can do that.'

'Why not?'

Her eyes grew agitated, as did her hands, their wringing action bringing his attention to her wedding and engagement rings.

The realisation that she was married disappointed Adrian more than anything had in a long time.

'Because your husband wouldn't like it?' he said, nodding towards her left hand.

Mentioning her husband seemed to agitate her more.

'I…I don't have a husband any more,' she blurted out. 'I'm a widow.'

Adrian found it h...

Title does not fit plot
By Caroline L.
It sounds a lot different than what it turns out to be. The sex in this book is extremely rough and/or kinky. The love-slave part only figures once, when he ties her hands behind her back. And it's not even in a scene, but a remembrance of one of their evenings together. The amount of the sex that they have on first acquaintance is incredible. And, after she decides to tell him that she wants to end it, she proceeds to agree to meet his mother. And, en route, he proposes, to which she eventually answers yes. I liked the heroine and the hero, but I thought that the plot could have been worked out better.

Bad title, very good book
By Mae Adamson
Thank goodness for the Internet. Without it, I would have been too embarassed to buy this book. I am not sure which is worse, the title or the book cover.

Do yourself a favor and disregard both.

This book is excellent. It it one of the best Harlequins I have read in a very long time. Good character develoment. Effective building of the emotional connecton. I also like that the writer turn the tables and made the hero the one who longed for a sign of affection from his partner.

The quality of Harlequins in the last few years has been hit and miss. Books like this one keeping me rolling the dice. I may loose a lot of the time, but every once in a while I strike it big with a book like this one which makes it all worth while.

An Unexpected Surprise !
By E.Capri
First let me say I read this book in a few hours I could not put it down and then just this morning I recommended it to a woman that I met at the bookstore.

I have to say I agree with the first reviewer about the title of this book they could have done better its totally misleading and the only reason I initially brought it is because I tend to purchase all 8 books in the Harlequin Presents series and hope for the best that my money hasn't went completely down the toilet; although I have to disagree with the comment about the cover art for harlequin this is an improvement over the recycling over covers that they have been doing recently in the past year or so, I was starting to think that the art department over there had gone through budget cuts, but I digress the book itself was great I enjoyed that Sharni was the kind of character that a reader could relate to, she was older than the typical harlequin heroine (30 years old) and had some experience in male/female relationships. She wasn't your typical "Harlequin weeping of the vine-virgin". And Adrian the hero complemented her strong-brook no nonsense yet still possessing that soft romantic feminine characteristics that I think some harlequin authors struggle to find a mix of either they go totally overboard with the naïve-innocent heroine or the "I am woman her me roar" characters. Adrian was gorgeous and of course and had alpha-male written all over him but it wasn't to the degree that you hated him or just thought he was over hearing with it, and even when he wanted to be all rich-man he-manish Sharni had the kind of personality that could put the breaks on it without hurting his male pride.

The interaction between Sharni and Adrian is sizzling you find yourself getting sucked into the story from the first few pages, although the back synopsis of the book throws you off and you keep trying to figure out the connection between Adrian and Sharni's dead husband and once you think you figured it out the author throws a wrench in the works, I absolutely loved it! Ms. Lee really gave good character development I never once felt she rushed or dragged the plot between these two. It was the perfect balance of believable/unbelievable happenings although in this day and age anything is possible. The book was an over all success on Miranda Lee's part good character and plot development. I recommend this as a good Sunday afternoon or rainy day read to make you feel all warm inside.

"Kiss me", he growled..."and make it believable"
By Marilyn Shoemaker
I can certainly see why Prince Voronov's Virgin was chosen as the Book of the Month by Mills and Boon. Lynn Raye Harris has again, out done herself with this ruthless Russian hero, Prince Alexei.

Alexei and Paige met in a most interesting way as Paige was roaming Red Square looking for her sister. He heard a scream, then foot steps and found a woman frightened and alone. When he learned some men were after Paige, Alexei came up with a quick plan......."Kiss me,' he growled... `And make it believable." He had decided they wouldn't be bothered if they acted like lovers, so he hauled her into an embrace. Nothing like that had ever happened to Paige. Later on after their hot kiss, Alexei found out why Paige was in Russia, she worked for Russell Tech and his American cousin.

What a coincidence; the very same Russell family he hated and wanted to destroy. Years earlier after his father died, he, his mother and terminally ill sister needed help. Alexei went to his uncle for financial assistance and was denied it. That's when they lost their family home and everything including his sister. Revenge was what he wanted now, he wanted them to suffer as his family once had. He'd restored his fortune, gained back the family palace but in the end the only thing that mattered was taking down Russell Tech. When he found out Paige worked there, he decided to use her.

All of her life Paige always thought of others first, especially her sister Emma, the very same sister she had to raise when their mother died. Now the man she had a crush on, her boss was having an affair with Emma and wanted to marry her. Broken hearted, Paige took a chance and let the handsome Russian prince take her to dinner at his palace. He was so handsome and the palace was incredible. But still she felt she was betraying her boss by seeing him. Then something she didn't expect happened. She slept with him. However, on the way back to her hotel she found out Alexei had won the bid and Russell Tech had been destroyed. She was furious with Alexei, felt used and returned home to Texas.

Talk about a shock when Paige found out weeks later that she was pregnant! On top of that, who should arrive at her door step and witness her with morning sickness? You guessed it, Alexei! He was determined to take her home to Russia, marry and take care of them. However, he would never love, never care again because he had failed his mother and sister. She saw things in Alexi, things that no one else had and that made him vulnerable. It was easier not to need nor love anyone and so he left her alone again. He wouldn't take that chance again and so he made a decision. He would leave her at the palace, only returning occasionally to check on her. What a lonely life and existence for Paige and she was miserable.

The ending chapters of Prince Voronov's Virgin were difficult to read. Paige told her husband she loved him. However, Alexei was too afraid to tell her he felt the same. Because love meant loss to him. He was a coward because he didn't want to face his feelings and his fears. However, Paige was determined and she followed him to Moscow and everything came crashing down upon them. He was afraid he would loose his wife and/or baby, just like he had lost his sister, Katrina. Paige wanted it all and I couldn't blame her. Even though she loved him, it wouldn't be enough unless he loved her back. It was time for the people in her life to put her first! Sometimes in life, it takes a near tragedy as a wake up call. Well the Prince got his and in the end, gave his Princess his love and all of her dreams came true!

drama, revenge, and love
By Karen Clarke
From the opening drama to the revealed family tradegy, this romance has backbone. I love Paige's character as she is a rare HP heroine that has the ability to open her mouth and speak for herself. Which she does. Often. Great not having heroine with long winded conversations in her head going over and over the same thing.

It's not a perfect story as readers will discover at the night Alexio and Paige finally come together but it is well written and holds interest. When the family history is exposed, it leaves reader wondering how the tragic past is going to be resolved or even if it will be resolved. I love Paige's power and determination to grow and hold onto to the good things in her life. And I love Alexio's sense of rightness and eventual fair play. Well worth the read.

The book was filled with such a wide variety of characters, it was amazing!! Loved the business battle and love patterns. Just a perfect plot that was not easily predictable as usual harlequins. However, I love them all!!! >.

I can't wait to read more of his booksan soon!
By Emma Parker
Author Falko Rademacher has penned a book that for me was literally so different and interesting that I couldn't put it down! Trust me, this author is so refreshingly talented with a unique gift of storytelling that I can think of no one to compare him to other than perhaps Missouri's own talented Mr. Mark Twain (who also had a funny way with words). I can't wait to read more of his booksan soon!

Review
5 stars
"Lisa Landtroop's young adult fantasy/science fiction novel, Easy Does It, is entertaining and exciting. Leo, Brandon and Sara are great characters. They're irreverent and funny, but they also become intrepid space explorers who answer Leo's call. After all, the future of planet Earth is in their hands. Landtroop's writing is breezy and fast-paced, and I quickly got involved in this deliciously different science fiction tale. I'm looking forward to the next book in The Haurenthian Chronicles. Easy Does It is a lot of fun, and it's highly recommended."- Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite

4 Stars"Lisa Landtroop writes her tale with utter imagination and creativity that make the story come alive. Her dialogue between the three characters is filled with realism and humor as Sara, Brandon, and Leo banter and bicker their way through many adventures. As an avid fan of young adult books, I enjoyed this book and the characters who, over time, develop a bond as they fight creatures from another planet. Each character is imbued with his/her own strong personality and identity. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves science fiction."- Christine Nguyen for Readers' Favorite

A page-to-page thrill ride for fantasy lovers.
By Autumn
Lisa Landtroop's first SF novel is an absolute delight. A well paced adventure, it opens up your imagination to just how fascinating aliens can be. The 70's era vibes accentuate the trio's quest to save Earth with fun lingo and scene settings. I wait in hurried anticipation for the second book in the trilogy.
