I was probably one of the first readers since I've been anticipating it's debut for some time now and I was absolutely thrilled! It made me laugh and it made me cry especially because I'm familiar with the characters, but the heartfelt narrative made me feel as if I were right there with them every step of the way! An awesome read for all dog lovers!

Warning! Reading this series might not only entertain you in many ways, but it might be somewhat educational as well! Let’s start with ninja skills, samurai period drama and sexy teens. Yes, we have them all in one informative, semi-historical series from the famed creators of Lone Wolf and Cub, Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima. It’s the story of to-be shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, in his late teens, battling and politicking his way to the leadership of Edo-era Japan. To do so, he must survive assasination attempts, political sabotage, bloody battlefields and a ferocious wife. And he does this with the help of his friend and vassal, the unstoppable ninja Hattori Hanzo. Heard these names before? That’s because they’re a revered part of Japan’s (sometimes secret) past!

Ieyasu's son Takechiyo turns out to be a Child of Smoke
By Lawrance Bernabo
I do not know if the gap between Dark Horse Manga's publication of each volume of "Path of the Assassin" has been steadily growing with each new release, but it certainly seems that way. It becomes necessary to fight the temptation to read each new volume cover to cover (starting at the "back" of course) as soon as it finally arrives and to limit myself to one story a night and letting the experience last an entire week. Fortunately an appreciation of Zen is helpful because you will discover in Volume 7, "Center of the World," that there is not a lot of action this time around. That is not to say that nothing happens, because the Baldy Rat shows up with a strange proposal, Ieyasu and Hatori Hanzo fight with the stems of weeds, and there are a couple of assassination attempts. But somehow the most compelling part of these stories become when Ieyasu lays out his options and his next step (or hop) along the path that will lead to him becoming Shogun, especially since in this volume he asks for Imperial permission to take the name Tokugawa by which history best remembers him.

We end up with parts of three different chapters in Volume 7, beginning with the end of the "Chapter on 'Shogyo Mujo.'" No. 3: "Oman," is about a young woman with whom Ieyasu is smitten. Of course, as lord of the castle he can have any woman he wants, and Hanzo is certainly happy to go and bring Oman hither, but Ieyasu has no desire to take any woman by force. So Hanzo arranges for Oman to be Ieyasu's maidservant, and that sets the stage for the rather innocent seduction that takes place. Now Hanzo's only problem is to make sure Ieyasu's wife does not find out what is going on, revealing yet another aspect of his limitless ingenuity.

The next five parts belong to the "Chapter on 'Josha Hissui,'" most of which is taken up by a massive story that surprisingly does not give this volume its title. That would be No. 1: "Center of the World," where Ieyasu's court is wondering what Hanzo has not been rewarded, when even those who have been conquered have been given something by Ieyasu. There is a simple explanation, so obvious that Hanzo does not see it. No. 2: "Child of Smoke," is the key story in this collection, and begins with an assassination attempt on Takechiyo, the young son of Ieyasu. While the boy's mother confronts the assassin, Ieyasu and Hanzo consider the political implications of such an attack. However, it is the Baldy Rat who shows up and offers not just an explanation, but also proposes a strange course of action for Ieyasu to take. Meanwhile, Hanzo and his wife consider whether having a child would interfere with his duty towards his lord; it turns out there is duty, and then there is duty.

The other two parts constitute an interlude between this chapter and the next one. No. 4: "No Pretty Trees on the Mountain Top" has Ieyasu considering the question of whether he should buy muskets to arm his troops, giving him another opportunity to weigh his opponents and mark his course. Similarly, No. 5: "Neither Sings nor Flies" finds master and friend sitting in a field playing with flowers while considering not only the future but the importance of luck. Finally, we get the opening part of the "Chapter on 'Esha Jori." No. 1: "Shinobi with Extending Fists, Part 1," has an assassination attempt on Ieyasu and single combat between Hanzo and the assassin to force a confession of who is behind the plot. I guess we are lucky that they found a convenient place to stop this story, and once again we have to wait for the next book, "Path Of The Assassin, Volume 8: Shinobi with Extending Fists" to see if this is halfway through the story on just the opening act of some larger saga. The fact that this story gives the next volume its title would be considered a clue.

With their fictional telling of the early life of Ieyasu Tokugawa, I think author Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima have crafted yet another masterpiece. Trying to pick between "Path of the Assassin," "Lone Wolf and Cub," and "Samurai Executioner" is just like the classic example of talking apples, oranges, and bananas. As long as you like fruit (for "fruit" read "manga"), there is no reason that you should not like watching a young boy turn into a Shogun, an epic saga about the quest for vengeance, or a contemplative look at the nature of justice in feudal Japan. I think "Path of the Assassin" might be my favorite, but that might just be because we are just shy of the halfway point in this 15-volume series. As always, keep in mind that these books are intended for mature readers and that the Parental Advisory label on the front cover (which is in the "back" since these books are oriented in right-to-left reading format as originally created) is a serious warning, because there are several scenes of naked nude people having sex.

Good but complicated
By Timoleon Kiritsis
Like the other two series "Lone Wolf and Cub" and "Samurai Executioner", "Path of the Assasin" is a very pleasant book for one to read. But unlike the other two series, there is a focus on the geopolitical events of that era in japan and much less battles. Also it is almost impossible to remember all the different names and charactes that take part on the plot.

Take one burned-out city girl. Add a crusty codger, a pinch of gossip, and a dash of romance. Stir in a generous helping of murder and you've got the ingredients for one truly delicious mystery. . .

Haunted by the car accident that ended her career as a cookbook publicist, Val Deniston has traded in the chaos of New York City for a quieter life near the Chesapeake Bay. Living with her curmudgeonly grandfather in the tourist town of Bayport is hardly glamorous, but she enjoys working at the Cool Down Café at the local fitness club, and she finally has time to work on her long-planned cookbook. But when one of the club's patrons is found dead, she'll have to cook up a scheme to find the killer. As the number of suspects rises like crabs in a bucket, it's out of the pan and into the fire for Val. If she can't find the culprit soon, she might as well be chum in the water. . .

Includes 8 five-ingredient recipes!

"Cozy mystery readers will the love the puzzle and the enjoyable look into this small tourist town by the sea." --Nancy Coco, author of All Fudged Up

A Tasty Mystery, Perfectly Prepared and Presented
By Edoardo819
This is a delightful debut novel by a writer with real detective-fiction chops. Good characters, an effortlessly puzzling and engaging story, more than a soupçon of red herrings and misdirections, a charming grandfather-granddaughter relationship, and a satisfying finish make this novel intelligent and enjoyable. Highly professional plotting and characterization, plus a smooth prose style and excellent styling, enhance the story and increase the reader's pleasure.

Corrigan is a professional in every way. The mystery and its solution are plausible, the interactions and reactions of the characters well observed and psychologically sensible, and the five-ingredient trick enjoyable without getting in the way. Corrigan works into the mix a double handful of cooking metaphors and references, which add to the fun. I await with great appetite her second novel, due in June 2015.

Maya mixed up a fun new cozy mystery
By laurathomas61
With tennis, vying for manager of the Cool Down Cafe, and trying to sell real estate, there are some pretty serious competitions going on in this book.

That’s what makes this such a fun mystery.

When one of the woman from the local tennis club is found murdered, there’s also an unsolved hit-and -run, and some arson going on and it may all tie together, or not.

I bet Val didn’t expect to be helping the police with a murder when she left New York City behind to move in with her grumpy grandfather in the small town of Bayport in Chesapeake Bay.

Managing the cafe and playing on the local tennis team, Val quickly gets to know a lot of the people in this small town. And like most small towns, it’s hard to keep a secret and the gossip is rampant.

Val is drawn into the murder investigation when she discovers the body of a fellow tennis player. And the number one suspect is her cousin. Not wanting to believe her capable of murder, Val starts her own investigation, but being a stickler, she doesn’t scratch her cousin off the list of suspects. And that list is long.

As Val’s suspect list shrinks, the danger escalates. She’s being stalked and someone ran her off the road. She’s getting close, but to which case. The hit-and-run, the arson, the murder, or all three?

The author had me going in circles trying to figure out who the killer was. It wasn’t obvious. There were lots of false trails. And I didn’t have a clue until about two thirds of the way through the book. There was still a ways to go so I knew things could change and have me suspecting someone else, so I paid close attention, sniffing for clues.

This cozy mystery had a lot to offer. Several mysteries, lots of colorful characters, danger, and romance.

Val and Gunnar are flirting with a burgeoning romance. This wasn’t the main focus in the mystery, just a dollop of whipped cream to add zest, and it’s early in the romance stage.

Val has her own personal mystery to solve too. Her memory of the car crash that ended her budding career in New York is still not clear. Did she cause the crash or was it an accident?

Lots of questions and the author gave me the answers bit by bit. There was no rush to wrap this up, and the ending left me happy and eager for more.

I received this book for my honest review.

Loved The Granddad
By Richard Morgan
I read the whole book in three sittings—most enjoyable. This is an excellent first novel; I found so many things to like. Author Corrigan has a flowing style with a fine grasp of grammar. Her English prose exhibits effortless transitions; I found it easy to follow her on a change of thought.
I have always enjoyed Maryland’s eastern shore and I think this is a fine venue for a mystery story. I plan to read her second novel as soon as it appears.
I rate this tale as a 5 star book, but I did notice some minor incongruities. To my way of thinking, Val is too perfect: perfectly moral, no strange urges, gets along with people. To this reader, she is maybe a little boring. On the other hand, stealing the show and over shadowing Val is the Granddad. To my way of thinking, the Granddad character in Author Corrigan’s subplot is many times more interesting than her protagonist.

Ghosts of East Berlin, by Eric Friedman

November 9, 2014 marked the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In their joint memoir, Ghosts of East Berlin, Santa Barbara, California residents, Celeste McConnell Barber and her son, Eric Friedman, recollect their experience as some of the first and only ordinary Americans to live behind the Wall. It was January, 1988 when Celeste McConnell Barber and her son Eric Friedman departed for six months to live in East Berlin, the city at the center of Cold War politics – among the first Americans to be invited to the Eastern Bloc under Gorbachev’s glasnost (openness) policy. The late Frank McConnell, Professor of English at U.C. Santa Barbara, had been awarded a Fulbright grant by the International Exchange of Scholars to teach at Humboldt University. The Fulbright was part of a global effort to enhance cultural exchange and communications between the West and Eastern Bloc nations. “Just six months after President Reagan issued his challenge – ‘Tear down this wall!’ -- and suddenly we were traveling in a subway through No Man’s Land. Most remarkable, our family of three became goodwill ambassadors for our country,” said McConnell Barber. “I was only 10 years old,” added Friedman. “My world instantly expanded from a local to a global perspective. It was a lot to grasp at the time, but the friendships I forged and the foreign view of my home country changed me on a fundamental level. Twenty-five years later and I am still discovering how those six months impacted me as a child and adult, in my understanding of the responsibility of being an American citizen, and the significance that I am a descendant of European Jews.” The memoir highlights the challenge of everyday life under Socialism, as the family grappled with both the American Embassy and German Stasi and the joys of simply engaging with East Berliners on the most human level, walls be damned!

Great Stories of an American family living in East Berlin
By Frontier Technology, Inc.
Great stories and very interesting perspective on the cold war and life as an American in the heart of the Eastern Block. I particularly enjoyed how both the perspective of a young boy and his mother are described. Although they went through the same experiences, their are subtle differences in their view of their experience. I learned a lot about what it was like for an American living among the "Enemies".

A Great Little Book
By BQ
Not only did I get a better understanding of East Berlin before the wall came down, it was told from the points of view of both an adult and a 10-year-old-boy (Americans) who were living there. I found the book both informative and entertaining. A bonus for me, living in Southern California, was both authors coming to my book club. If you aren't far from Santa Barbara, you may be able to meet them, too.

the non fiction memoir effectively conveys life in East Berlin ...

the non fiction memoir effectively conveys life in East Berlin in 1988 for 3 Americans but also for the Germans who live there. The descriptions come alive The vision of this gray city and the contrasts to W. Berlin are strong.

But the main draw is the experiences of Eric and how he coped with the strangeness and grew as a person/

Nice art compilation
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:957b6018665973b1330e23821cff63f9]]I only found out about Infected by Art after seeing this book on Amazon. The artworks featured are from their IBA website. IBA is a huge online platform where artists can submit their works, and through voting and judging, the artworks are selected for inclusion in the book. Volume three is already in the pipeline.

The works are mostly fantasy art with just a handful of sci-fi art. The book kinda reminds me of the Spectrum series of artbooks, however the Spectrum artbooks have more variety in terms of subjects as for IBA it's mostly about characters and some creatures.

Having said that, the art in this book are beautiful. What's interesting for me is to see some familiar names who are also displaying their artworks there, such as Peter Mohrbacher, Joe Jusko, Patrick Jones, Donato Giancola and many other artists. Over 300 pieces of artworks are included in this 304-page hardcover.

The artworks are grouped by the type of media used, namely oil, acrylic, watercolour, digital, pen, ink, pencil and mixed media (sculptures actually).

I guess the only downside is the paper used seems thin. The printing quality is decent enough.

Overall, it's a good art compilation to check out. And definitely visit Infected by Art website for more artworks.

(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Fallen Land: A Novel, by Patrick Flanery

From the critically acclaimed author of Absolution, a “dazzling . . . thrilling . . . downright exhilarating” (The Washington Post) page-turner set in the American heartland.

In Patrick Flanery’s tensely brilliant second novel, the layered and tumultuous past of one plot of former farmland comes to haunt its new owners in breathtaking yet deeply meaningful ways.

When Julia and Nathaniel arrive in a luxury suburb of neo-Victorian homes on the edge of a sprawling midwestern city, they have no inkling of its history. For the East Coast couple and their young son, Copley, it is a fresh start, promising a bucolic American future. They buy up the signature home of the development in a foreclosure sale and move in to their brave new world. Yet violence lies just beneath the surface of this land, and simmers deep within Nathaniel—as it did in the development’s architect. As the remaining trees on the land bear witness, reality shifts, and the edges of what is right and wrong blur and then vanish, as Copley becomes convinced that someone is living in the house with them.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The land once belonged to Louise’s family, but she had to sell it in the wake of her husband’s death. Now she watches from the small plot that remains in her possession as Paul Krovik erects his new housing development, beginning with his own home. But Paul’s vision is ill-founded, and when he loses everything, he sinks into madness and goes into hiding in a bunker beneath his house. Chasing their own dreams, Julia and Nathaniel buy Paul’s foreclosed home and move to the small town with their son. Unaware of the man living below them, they cannot conceive of their danger. As they become increasingly mindful of an unexplainable presence in their home, Nathaniel’s reservations about the move grow to the point of insanity, leading them all toward the tragedy hinted at in the novel’s beginning. This psychological thriller doesn’t stop at suspenseful and chilling, though. Fallen Land deconstructs the American dream to expose its most damning flaws and unsound foundations. The novel is rich in imagery and metaphor, and its conclusions are deeply disturbing. Written with the same elegance and ease demonstrated in Absolution (2012), Flanery’s second novel will keep readers riveted from intriguing prelude to stunning finale. --Cortney Ophoff

Review

"Dazzling . . . thrilling . . . downright exhilarating"--"Washington Post"
"As in his sterling 2012 debut, "Absolution," Flanery balances thriller-novel twists with smart and sincere sociological meditations."--"Wall Street Journal"
"Patrick Flanery has fashioned a crumbling 21st-century manor that can hold its own among those authors most sepulchral, allegorical inspirations. . . . We follow "Fallen Land "on tenterhooks from fearsome opening to shuddery climax, waiting to see what it will do."--"Boston Globe"
"Flanery has planted a modern-day bogeyman tale in this fertile ground of suspicion. . . . He has the skill and the vision to transform the darkness that has infected this country into something that walks the earth"--"New York Daily News"
"[Flanery is a] gifted storyteller . . . manages to both provoke and enthrall in this densely plotted page turner."--"BookPage"
"[Flanery] confronts the traumas of American life with poignancy and the gravity they deserve, approaching them with the care required to help weather the storm."--"BookSlut"
"This psychological thriller doesn't stop at suspenseful and chilling, though. "Fallen Land "deconstructs the American dream to expose its most damning flaws and unsound foundations. The novel is rich in imagery and metaphor, and its conclusions are deeply disturbing. Written with the same elegance and ease demonstrated in "Absolution," Flanery's second novel will keep readers riveted from intriguing prelude to stunning finale."--""Booklist ""(starred)
"Flanery's engrossing new novel speaks to modern anxieties through themes of loss. . . . Flanery excels in depicting psychic anguish. Paul is both disturbing and fascinating, and Copley, helpless in the face of his father's increasing harshness, is eminently sympathetic. The characters' struggles culminate in a shocking and memorable denouement."--"Publishers Weekly "(starred)
"Flanery explores family and social mores, cataloging emotional damage tumbling from generation to generation, all woven into a metaphorical tale about the human cost of bubble economics, the undermining of personal freedoms in the name of homeland security and the ugly consequences of the privatization of public service. . . . Flanery's dark view of human ambition, weakness and complacency is both thoughtful and terrifying. A haunting, layered allegory."--"Kirkus "(starred)
"Flanery gives every character a nuanced inner voice, allowing the reader to empathize with, if not fully understand, the actions of each. This is a tense, gut-wrenching take on the American dream gone horribly awry."--"Library Journal," (starred)
"Like Flanery's debut, "Absolution," "Fallen Land "is thematically ambitious--the financial crisis and the legacy of slavery are among its concerns--but also thrillingly tense and atmospheric. The author tugs at the edges of his narrative until it assumes exaggerated, Gothic shapes. Comparisons to Nathaniel Hawthorne, to whom there are allusions throughout, would not be extravagant."--"Financial Times"
"Now, on the back of his highly regarded South Africa-set debut, "Absolution," Patrick Flanery takes up the challenge of what DeLillo calls 'the American mystery' in a new novel that also explores the dark shadows cast by history and old lies. . . . In "Fallen Land," Flanery has given us a gripping thriller, and a superb portrayal of how ordinary men can veer into madness, but its real power lies in its recognition of the tragic failure of an American dream that should have tried, at least, to live up to Francis Bellamy's principle of 'liberty and justice for all.' "--"The Guardian"
"Patrick Flanery's second novel . . . combines old-style suspense with a chilling picture of modern America. . . . "Fallen Land "is an ambitious thriller vehicle for a dissection of America. . . "Fallen Land "impressively examines how thoroughly the American dream has turned into the American nightmare."--"Sunday Times"

Well-written tale of people desperately striving to feel at home in the world
By Kcorn
It was impossible for me to read Fallen Land without seeing obvious parallels to the recent housing crisis, with events in the novel, surreal as they often were, reflecting the feelings of so many who have lost their homes. The alienation and loss of identity of people who've lost their refuges in the world - or are unsettled in their new surroundings - is almost palpable.

At the heart of Fallen Land is Paul Krovik, a property developer who wanted to be a builder ever since he was a young child playing with blocks. To fulfill his dreams, he eventually purchases Poplar Farm. The land has been in Louise Washington's family for generations. Although Louise was pressured to sell the land, she was ultimately unwilling to leave her beloved house. She feels added resentment because she is forced to watch the trees and wildlife on Poplar Farm being destroyed for an inept, senseless plan. She'd been led to believe they would be spared.

This is is a haunting and very poignant work, one which is also at times suspenseful and violent. The actions of most of the main individuals are so extreme that I found it best to view the story as a symbol for current events and passions in today's world - rather than a depiction of believable events (similar to the way a good fantasy may highlight reality in sharper detail).

As time goes on, Paul grows increasingly unhinged and out of touch with reality. Not only are his luxury homes half-finished but his wife and young sons have also left him. Even so, he clings to the home he no longer owns, living in secret within it (how he accomplishes this is too complicated to explain here).

This is the same home which a young couple, Julia and Nathaniel Noailles, have purchased, having left Boston with their son Copley - to start a new life. But Nathaniel has misgivings from the start. He can't seem to find an identity, a sense of self, in his life. Neither can young Copley.

As events play out over time, life becomes much darker for each person. Copley goes to a school with rules reminiscent of Animal Farm, with arbitrary judgments handed out by unyielding and harsh teachers. Paul tries desperately to find a solution to his failed dreams. Louise continues her fight to remain in her home.

While I was entranced by most of this book, my interest waned in the last few chapters. This is where events seemed rushed and made the novel somewhat weaker for me. I had to struggle to find the integrity and structure of the the earlier part of the book. Even so, this is a powerful work and I was stunned by the finely crafted writing. I look forward to Mr. Flanery's next novel.

Fantastic beginning, weird middle, flat ending
By D. Sorel
Whenever I hear that there is a novel about a plot of land that has been handed down from generation to generation, I can't get my hands on it fast enough. "Fallen Land" sounded perfect in that it was about a plot of land that had inadvertently been given to a sharecropping family after the Civil War. But what happens when that family's legacy can't keep the land? What happens when the land is corrupted by greed and crippled dreams? And when another family enters into the mix in hopes of starting anew...will they be able to overcome the cursed land?

While there's a flashback to how the property came into its current hands, the majority of the novel focuses on the land as it is today. Based down from generation to generation in a time when African American families were not considered landowners, the plot had huge significance to the African American family that lived on it. But when the patriarch died, there was no one to keep up the house and farm. So the last woman in the legacy, sold off pieces to a developer who promised to bring prosperity to the land and rejuvenate it. Instead, he divided up the land, cut down the trees, and built shabby houses. All the while, the last woman in the family watched as her property was thrown to the wolves and she was on the brink of getting evicted. When the developer went bankrupt, he had to leave the land...but what if he had no where to go? What if the land had such a hold on him that he was incapable of leaving? Another family moves into the developer's old house to start anew in this little Midwest town. The family is far from perfect and the land seems to further irritate their already tenuous relationship. It's obvious from the get-go that this is a prescription for disaster!

Are you sucked in yet? Well, I was! From the very beginning, I was captured by the characters and their stories. I could barely pull myself away. As I got to the middle of the book, things slagged a bit and I lost some interest as the characters became overly repetitive and stereotypes of other characters trapped in a house/land that was eating them alive (The Shining, Treasure of Sierra Madre, Gone With the Wind, etc). What began as fleshed our dynamic characters, became cardboard cutouts. Still, I plugged through the end as I was hoping for a conclusion that was just as explosive as the beginning. No dice. Whatever intrigue there was in the middle, merely fizzled and died a slow death. You could see the end coming and while certain authors can pull it off, this novel ended up falling flat.

Overall, I would say a 5 star beginning, three star middle, and one star ending...averaging out to three stars...

5 star entertainment with disagreeable assumptions
By Digital Rights
When Julia and Nathaniel relocate from Boston to an unnamed mid western city with their 7 year old son Copley for better jobs, better pay and escape their own haunting pasts their lives collide with a builder that's lost everything, a company that gets an A+ in evil and town that's become socially dysfunctional as it's finances have collapsed.

"Fallen Land" is a taut psychological thriller. It's a winner but one that owes kudos to everything from Dennis Lahane to "Cape Fear" to Jon Cassar. Dystopia sells and Patrick Flanery is selling it at a bulk rate where Nate, Juile and Copley have moved into a failed society of evil corporations managing lives, alienating suburbs, racism masked as immigration, drug pushing psychiatrists, narcissistic parents to consumed to understand their child, cynical "education" that teaches nothing but obedience bullying and tasers and really bad weather. In the end no one can ever rise above it and instead defer to their worst instincts. Some are victims. Others get just what they deserve.

As entertainment it works. We love this stuff. "24", Kennedy conspiracies, "Homeland" "Revolution" or anything on the SciFi channel. In all cases we're not in control, cannot make a bit of difference and it all ends badly.

And there is good horror too. We read/watch with half closed eyes as our lead characters all inevitably dissolve. We want to look away but you can't. I know I couldn't. I LIKED IT! Just like a good Parker novel or Charles Bronson flick. The only thing missing from was our stalker Paul Krovik "calling from inside the house".

My point here is that as entertainment it's great. He builds tension and some of his characters, particularly the son Copley and his father Nate are intricate, complex and thoroughly interesting full people. But I believe Flanery is attempting a greater message of an America collapsing into a state of fear and willing to sell it's freedoms to have it. As the very short term pendulum swings there is some truth to that but on any longer reckoning it's not. Wilson took away far more freedoms during WWI. Justice Taney's court was far worse than any outrage that may upset us about today's Supreme Court, crime rates have been on the decline for 2000 years and the mid west is NOT a giant right wing nation of stultifying conformity. Want to voice your opinion? Join the 2,000,000 bloggers on Tumblr. Don't like the education your kids are getting? Choose any of thousands of options. In Flanery's world we are all heading towards less choice and less participation in our democracy.

Here Flanery writes expressing Nathaniel's opinion and likely his own and I could not disagree more.

"Of course he wants Copley to have a childhood of trees and lawns before the possibility of houses and yards like the one they have bought disappears into a future of hot and unpredictable chaos, of high-density living as the only possible way for the species to continue. The world Copley will inhabit as an adult is bound to be a far more difficult place than the one Nathaniel has inherited. If it has not already happened, humanity is about to enter a new era, when security will matter more than anything else: not just of person and property but also of food, water, health, medicine, the environment. Security will become the defining quality and concern of human existence on the planet and beyond; to guarantee the long-term security of the human species (if such a thing is desirable), we are going to have to leave the earth. Hawking has already said it, and others agree."

Flanery panders to our fears and he does it well. This is good fiction. It's just not good philosophy.
