A Must Have Book For Pom Owners

This is an excellent book for all Pomeranian owners whether you are a new owner of have owned them for years. So much information inside to help answer any and all questions you may have. The author is very knowledgable and writes so that one can understand the information without getting too technical. I have had Poms for years and have learned a lot about their care and other things that I wasn't aware of after reading this book. Totally enjoyed reading and will keep nearby for reference.

This was a fun book that helped me a lot in my struggle to master Italian. I have been studying Italian for four years now and I was looking for some conversational material in order to improve my vocabulary. Retold Origins

I grew up reading Jonah Hex in 1970's in the pages of Weird Western Tales. You must understand the westerns I grew up on was John Wayne, The Lone Ranger, Wagon Train and the Virigian. It was later that I discover the Magnificent Seven and the Clint Eastwood Man with No Name series of films. My first exposing to the idea of the anti-hero was Hex.

In this graphic novel,the lucky reader has a rewritten original more suited to HEX, the bounty hunter and the man. In this graphic novel, which reprints three comic novellas, we are reintroduced to Jonah Hex. Thosde who do not know the comic nor the character will enjoy the intro to him.

The writing is crisp and to the point, not like a monthly comic more like a well told novel. The art is the stuff you frame when buying an uncolored one sheet at auction. (Does anyone know if this art is available to buy, I would love a piece from this Hex book)

Those who bought Showcase Presents: Jonah Hex, Vol. 1 would not be disappointed. Hex seems gritter for the times. Jimmy Palmiotti is an able scribe, similar to John Byrne when he rewrote the Man of Steel origins(Superman: The Man of Steel, Vol. 1

So if you like the anti-hero western, pick this up. If you have not tried Jonah Hex, start with this one. Worth five stars in my book

Jonah Hex is back... well, sort of

Being a big fan of Jonah Hex from way back in the 70's, I wanted to see what the new update would look like. After all, the character was nearly killed off in the 80's when he started fighting monsters and demons. Now Jonah is back as the western (anti-) hero he was supposed to be (though the Albano stories are still unbeatable).

I was a little disappointed with the first two books, as most of the artists where a let down and incapable of drawing a decent western (jeesh, isn't there a single artist nowadays who can draw a horse?). But with the third volume we get at least an artist who can draw westerns (Torpedo's Jordi Bernet). The storyline which goes through three chapters, takes us back to when Jonah was a kid and of how he got his scarred face (and no, he wasn't kicked by a mule).

For old fans like me, there is nothing new on the horizon, as this story was already told before (and much better) by Michael Fleischer. However, we can see that DC has taken an interest in bringing the character back again the way he was meant to be, instead of transforming him into some sort of futuristic superhero. Also, this time around he at least speaks in his southern western drawl (as opposed to the modern PC English he spoke in the first two volumes).

The other two artists in the volume are worthless, the second one faring only slightly better than an inept artist called Phil Noto.

Now DC, how about getting Russ Heath out of retirement and have him draw a story?

not really the best of the trade paperback compilations

`Jonah Hex: Origins' is a compilation of issues 13 - 18 of the comic book published by DC / Vertigo in 2007.

The first three issues / chapters comprise the `Retribution' story arc, which consists mainly of flashbacks dealing with Jonah Hex's younger days, which were marked by plentiful abuse at the hands of various personages, including brutal Union Army officers, a drunk and disorderly father, and vengeful Apaches. We learn how Jonah suffered the injury to his left eye, and later, who was responsible for the disfiguring scar that mars the left half of his face.

`Retribution' is reasonably well written, although for some long-time fans of the Jonah Hex character, the disclosure of how he received his famous scars - after so many years of remaining a series mystery - may seem like the breaking of a covenant.

If the modern incarnation of the Hex series could be said to have a dedicated artist, it's Jordi Bernet, who illustrates the `Retribution' storyline. In my opinion Bernet's art style, with its sketchy, rather hasty quality, is not the book's strong point. But it's probably unrealistic to hope that Moebius will ever step in to draw some Jonah Hex comics in that `Blueberry' style.

The next two issues / chapters deal with the history of Tallulah Black, a young woman from Tennessee who is Hex's sometime bounty-hunting partner, and sometime girlfriend. `The Ballad of Tallulah Black' reveals the gruesome treatment Tallulah underwent at the hands of renegade Union soldiers. Luckily for our heroine, Jonah Hex is in the right place at the right time to lend some assistance, and under his tutelage Tallulah learns how to draw and shoot well enough to seek her revenge. While these two chapters are an entertaining read, employing the mordant humor common to the Hex titles, Phil Noto's artwork is too stylized and too pretty to really give the storyline the necessary gritty visual character. For example, a climactic shootout is rendered via the use of too-small panels and too-spare sound effects, turning into something of a weak imitation of the shootout between Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman in the movie `The Quick and the Dead'.

The last chapter in the book, `I Walk Alone', is the best in the compilation. Featuring some good artwork by Val Semeiks, with moody grays, blues, and blacks for a color scheme, the plot finds Jonah confronted at his wilderness encampment by a runaway bride. A posse of armed men arrive, seeking to retrieve her; against his will, Jonah finds himself drawn into the conflict. `I Walk Alone' keeps the reader guessing all the way to the last few panels, and ends on a note of profound cynicism and moral ambiguity.

These downbeat, existential conclusions are what (in my mind, at least) makes the `Jonah Hex' title such refreshing alternative to the contrived angst that characterizes the writing for so many of the better-selling superhero titles on the comic shop shelves.

In total, `Jonah Hex: Origins' probably isn't the most impressive of the trade paperback compilations of the contemporary Hex comics, but fans will want to have it in their collection, as its stories continue to inform ongoing scripts of the series.

Trevor R. Jefferson has been a freelance writer, author and ghostwriter for nearly two decades, having written for various travel, business, sports and religious print and on-line publications under various pseudonyms.

Trevor lived in the tiny island Kingdom of Tonga for five plus years and experienced firsthand, various hurricanes, expat insanity and government corruption at its finest, while at the same time experiencing and receiving the bounty that came from creating – and later selling – perhaps the most successful real estate business in the kingdom’s history.

FIVE STARS: Like a Mix between a Lonely Planet Guidebook and a How-to-Relocate Manual

I picked this book up as a free Kindle read and it was great! It's like a mix between a Lonely Planet Guidebook and a How-to-Relocate Manual.

One of the co-authors wrote a similar book titled "TONGA: EXPATRIATE RELOCATION MANUAL" and that was even better as it combined a funny personal memoir feel to it, to go along with the guidebook and relocation manual feel. However, this Grenada book still gets 5 stars from me, even if the Tonga book was better :-)

If you dream of escaping the rat race, retiring to an interesting country and want to know how to do so I would highly recommend reading this book!

Welcome to the Spice Islands of the Caribbean

This relocation guide to Grenada, one of the Windward Island nations of the Caribbean, is brief and to-the-point. I like that the authors do not waste my time. It was an easy read and got me the information I was looking for without any time or trouble at all.

It includes the usual guide-book fare: where it is, how to get there, why I would want to live in Grenada, how much will it cost me in comparison to other places, etc. But, I also appreciate the important details such as what visas are available, how much do they cost, what documentation do I need to obtain a visa, and how do I submit my paperwork; as well as solid advice on needing a car (you don't) whether one should arrive on a visitor's visa (yes) before applying for residency, etc.

Though this book was published on Amazon's Kindle in mid-December 2014, it was originally published elsewhere some years ago. I noticed that some of the text contains forward-looking statements indicating that certain things are to happen in 2008, etc. The manuscript obviously needs to be edited with an eye to those kinds of passages that leave a stale taste in the reader's mouth.

Otherwise, I give it a solid four stars and recommend Grenada: Expatriate Relocation Manual to anyone with Grenada on his or her radar.

ADVENTURES OF MAYA is an engrossing story in COMICS format of a 12-year-old girl and her dog, Bangle. Maya is going home after buying medicines for her grandfather when she and the dog get magically transported to the Age of the Ramayana.
Maya comes face to face with Ravana’s brother, Kumbhakarna who is on a rampage because a splitting headache is preventing him from falling asleep. Maya gives him a couple of aspirins. He gets immediate relief and promptly falls asleep.
Kumbhakarna’s personal physician, Dr Kala Miri is impressed by Maya’s medical skills. He invites her to his house, hoping to persuade her to reveal some of her medicinal formulas. But no sooner have they reached his house than the Queen’s soldiers burst in and take custody of the girl.
Queen Mandodari has a magic mirror in which she can see all that is happening in her kingdom. She saw Maya bring Kumbhakarna under control and wants to talk to her as her own husband, Ravana, is having bouts of insomnia.
Dr Kala Miri helps Maya escape from the soldiers but then she is captured by an evil sorceress, the White Witch. The White Witch has witnessed the arrival of Maya in Lanka through her crystal ball. She knows that Maya has come from the future and wants to find out from her the outcome of the war that is looming over Lanka.
A chase develops in which Maya is pursued by Dr Kala Miri, the Queen’s soldiers and the White Witch’s pet python, Warra-Warra. Dodging all of them, Maya finally arrives in the capital, at the time that Hanuman is setting fire to the city.
The comics are illustrated by Gajoo Tayde who is known for his clean line and tidy, uncluttered artworks. The writer, Luis Fernandes is author of ‘Guest who Came to Dinner’ published by Ratna Sagar and several several Amar Chitra Katha titles and former editor of India’s only comics magazine, Tinkle.

A Comics for All

I have seen this comic in Dimdima Children's Magazine, published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai. I missed many in-between issues of Dimdima Magazine and the continuity was broken. Though I missed many pages, I still got fascinated by this story and wanted to read it completely from the beginning. I was in search for this comic book at every Bookstore I visit, to buy a copy for my kids. No Luck till I found it in amazon.com accidentally. Thanks to Amrita Bharati and Amruta Comics for reproducing it in Kindle format. We all are enjoying it by reading it again and again.

Awesome for kids and adults !

This is a great blend of fiction and mythology. It really took me back to my childhood when I used to devoutly read each and every Amar Chitra Katha comics. The current trend of blending older fairy tales and creating a new genre that movies like Shrek pioneered has been very ably applied here. But ultimately, it was wholesome story-telling at its best.

Black Dynamite’s one-liners haven’t been this good since the movie

Reading the 4th issue of Black Dynamite made me forget that any of the others in the series even existed. The story seems like it has little to do with any of the others, it works well as a one-shot, and there’s a new artist so the art is not what we’re used to. But don’t let any of this sway you. This is honestly the best issue in the entire mini-series.

Considering the last issue was all the way back in July, I legitimately thought that I had just lost my mind and forgot about the epic setup to the man with the shuttlecock. However, after reading issue #3 all over again, I can tell you that there’s very little that even hinted towards the epic showdown contained in this pages; although the issue was hyped in the final pages of #3 so it wasn’t like there was some bizarre mistake.

And while I was ultimately waiting to see Black Dynamite fight some epic bestial army, let me be the first to tell you that issue #4 is the very essence of Black Dynamite as a character and a franchise and I’m almost mad that we didn’t get four issues of shuttlecock foolishness instead.

The plot in Black Dynamite #4 echoes the film in that we see what seems to be a personal tragedy turn into a full blown plot by The Man (which, in Blaxploitation land almost always means rich, evil white guy). In the opening panels we’re treated to basketball star Paul “The Pole” Monroe make a sweet dunk that our wildest dreams could’ve never imagined. However, immediately after his success, The Pole meets his untimely death in front of a crowd of people and media spins it as the unfortunate case of an overdose. Black Dynamite soon discovers that there may be more to his death with he receives a tip (and a little more) from The Pole’s own wife.

It’s essentially Anaconda Malt Liquor all over again but man is it enjoyable.

In this issue I found that Black Dynamite was able to offer more of his witty one-liners and most of his action took a backseat to the excellent dialogue that Brian Ash fills each panel with. Rarely was a panel wasted and a specific panel regarding Black Dynamite taking some shuttlecocks to the face had me laughing until I cried. In fact, the dialogue seemed more in tune with the film and as a huge fan of everything Black Dynamite, I felt like this was the best tie-in to the franchise we’ve yet to see.

Another excellent plus is that artist Jun Lofamia is back. Lofamia did the artwork on the “Slave Island” one-shot. While Marcelo Ferreira didn’t have bad art, Lofamia just fits so well within this universe that I’m mad that he didn’t do the entire mini-series. Ferreira’s art was a little more cartoony and a bit closer to the animated series whereas Lofamia takes it back to this excellent old-school look that’s reminiscent of old Blaxploitation movie posters and a time when comics cost 10 cents.

Ash and Lofamia together is something I absolutely need more of and I sincerely hope that the two of them work together on some more Black Dynamite comics. While I heavily enjoyed the previous issues, issue #4 reminded me of why I fell in love with Black Dynamite in the first place and is something that I feel anyone will be able to pick up and enjoy. The jokes are way more accessible, the action is completely ridiculous, and the ending was something that we could only ever get out of a Black Dynamite anything.

One of the things I do enjoy and the comic series is that the focus is almost entirely on Black Dynamite himself. While the supporting cast of Black Dynamite is great, I feel like focusing on Black Dynamite himself makes him this almost superhero like character that seems perfect in a comic book world, makes him a little more like Shaft, and also allows us to enjoy his one-liners and penchant for taking down the Man. It’s a simple formula that works well and when it’s done this will it doesn’t get tired or repetitive. It just gets funnier and funnier. And they still manage to fit in some slick Bullhorn rhymes in the form of a sort of credits preface that sets the scene.

This is hands down the best Black Dynamite comic since the “Slave Island” one-shot and I think that this fourth issue even gives “Slave Island” a run for its money. “Slave Island” had shark punching, Black Dynamite #4 has a dude jumping over 3 pintos to catch an alley oop from Evel Knievel. I only wish I thought of some of this stuff first because it’s absolutely golden. Ash and Lofamia have created a perfect issue and I better be getting more out of this creative team. This is supposedly the last of the Black Dynamite comics, but I feel like the success of this may lead to more. After all, Black Dynamite was only ever supposed to get a one-shot as a comic. And I feel like the popularity of the comics would’ve been better if they followed this formula instead of actually trying to be a sprawling, mystical comic.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go read this issue for the 5th time.
