ADVENTURES OF MAYA is an engrossing story in COMICS format of a 12-year-old girl and her dog, Bangle. Maya is going home after buying medicines for her grandfather when she and the dog get magically transported to the Age of the Ramayana.
Maya comes face to face with Ravana’s brother, Kumbhakarna who is on a rampage because a splitting headache is preventing him from falling asleep. Maya gives him a couple of aspirins. He gets immediate relief and promptly falls asleep.
Kumbhakarna’s personal physician, Dr Kala Miri is impressed by Maya’s medical skills. He invites her to his house, hoping to persuade her to reveal some of her medicinal formulas. But no sooner have they reached his house than the Queen’s soldiers burst in and take custody of the girl.
Queen Mandodari has a magic mirror in which she can see all that is happening in her kingdom. She saw Maya bring Kumbhakarna under control and wants to talk to her as her own husband, Ravana, is having bouts of insomnia.
Dr Kala Miri helps Maya escape from the soldiers but then she is captured by an evil sorceress, the White Witch. The White Witch has witnessed the arrival of Maya in Lanka through her crystal ball. She knows that Maya has come from the future and wants to find out from her the outcome of the war that is looming over Lanka.
A chase develops in which Maya is pursued by Dr Kala Miri, the Queen’s soldiers and the White Witch’s pet python, Warra-Warra. Dodging all of them, Maya finally arrives in the capital, at the time that Hanuman is setting fire to the city.
The comics are illustrated by Gajoo Tayde who is known for his clean line and tidy, uncluttered artworks. The writer, Luis Fernandes is author of ‘Guest who Came to Dinner’ published by Ratna Sagar and several several Amar Chitra Katha titles and former editor of India’s only comics magazine, Tinkle.

A Comics for All

I have seen this comic in Dimdima Children's Magazine, published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai. I missed many in-between issues of Dimdima Magazine and the continuity was broken. Though I missed many pages, I still got fascinated by this story and wanted to read it completely from the beginning. I was in search for this comic book at every Bookstore I visit, to buy a copy for my kids. No Luck till I found it in amazon.com accidentally. Thanks to Amrita Bharati and Amruta Comics for reproducing it in Kindle format. We all are enjoying it by reading it again and again.

Awesome for kids and adults !

This is a great blend of fiction and mythology. It really took me back to my childhood when I used to devoutly read each and every Amar Chitra Katha comics. The current trend of blending older fairy tales and creating a new genre that movies like Shrek pioneered has been very ably applied here. But ultimately, it was wholesome story-telling at its best.

Black Dynamite’s one-liners haven’t been this good since the movie

Reading the 4th issue of Black Dynamite made me forget that any of the others in the series even existed. The story seems like it has little to do with any of the others, it works well as a one-shot, and there’s a new artist so the art is not what we’re used to. But don’t let any of this sway you. This is honestly the best issue in the entire mini-series.

Considering the last issue was all the way back in July, I legitimately thought that I had just lost my mind and forgot about the epic setup to the man with the shuttlecock. However, after reading issue #3 all over again, I can tell you that there’s very little that even hinted towards the epic showdown contained in this pages; although the issue was hyped in the final pages of #3 so it wasn’t like there was some bizarre mistake.

And while I was ultimately waiting to see Black Dynamite fight some epic bestial army, let me be the first to tell you that issue #4 is the very essence of Black Dynamite as a character and a franchise and I’m almost mad that we didn’t get four issues of shuttlecock foolishness instead.

The plot in Black Dynamite #4 echoes the film in that we see what seems to be a personal tragedy turn into a full blown plot by The Man (which, in Blaxploitation land almost always means rich, evil white guy). In the opening panels we’re treated to basketball star Paul “The Pole” Monroe make a sweet dunk that our wildest dreams could’ve never imagined. However, immediately after his success, The Pole meets his untimely death in front of a crowd of people and media spins it as the unfortunate case of an overdose. Black Dynamite soon discovers that there may be more to his death with he receives a tip (and a little more) from The Pole’s own wife.

It’s essentially Anaconda Malt Liquor all over again but man is it enjoyable.

In this issue I found that Black Dynamite was able to offer more of his witty one-liners and most of his action took a backseat to the excellent dialogue that Brian Ash fills each panel with. Rarely was a panel wasted and a specific panel regarding Black Dynamite taking some shuttlecocks to the face had me laughing until I cried. In fact, the dialogue seemed more in tune with the film and as a huge fan of everything Black Dynamite, I felt like this was the best tie-in to the franchise we’ve yet to see.

Another excellent plus is that artist Jun Lofamia is back. Lofamia did the artwork on the “Slave Island” one-shot. While Marcelo Ferreira didn’t have bad art, Lofamia just fits so well within this universe that I’m mad that he didn’t do the entire mini-series. Ferreira’s art was a little more cartoony and a bit closer to the animated series whereas Lofamia takes it back to this excellent old-school look that’s reminiscent of old Blaxploitation movie posters and a time when comics cost 10 cents.

Ash and Lofamia together is something I absolutely need more of and I sincerely hope that the two of them work together on some more Black Dynamite comics. While I heavily enjoyed the previous issues, issue #4 reminded me of why I fell in love with Black Dynamite in the first place and is something that I feel anyone will be able to pick up and enjoy. The jokes are way more accessible, the action is completely ridiculous, and the ending was something that we could only ever get out of a Black Dynamite anything.

One of the things I do enjoy and the comic series is that the focus is almost entirely on Black Dynamite himself. While the supporting cast of Black Dynamite is great, I feel like focusing on Black Dynamite himself makes him this almost superhero like character that seems perfect in a comic book world, makes him a little more like Shaft, and also allows us to enjoy his one-liners and penchant for taking down the Man. It’s a simple formula that works well and when it’s done this will it doesn’t get tired or repetitive. It just gets funnier and funnier. And they still manage to fit in some slick Bullhorn rhymes in the form of a sort of credits preface that sets the scene.

This is hands down the best Black Dynamite comic since the “Slave Island” one-shot and I think that this fourth issue even gives “Slave Island” a run for its money. “Slave Island” had shark punching, Black Dynamite #4 has a dude jumping over 3 pintos to catch an alley oop from Evel Knievel. I only wish I thought of some of this stuff first because it’s absolutely golden. Ash and Lofamia have created a perfect issue and I better be getting more out of this creative team. This is supposedly the last of the Black Dynamite comics, but I feel like the success of this may lead to more. After all, Black Dynamite was only ever supposed to get a one-shot as a comic. And I feel like the popularity of the comics would’ve been better if they followed this formula instead of actually trying to be a sprawling, mystical comic.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go read this issue for the 5th time.

By the time we took Dale up to his room to settle him for the night, he was much calmer, although he insisted that Henry stay with him at all times. Even when Henry was lying beside him on top of the blanket, Dale still needed reassurance that his dog was not going away and was feeling all right. I had an idea and whispered to Jamie, who then said in Henry's deep voice, "Dale, I'm feeling much better now. Please take my Band-aid off."

Jamie gently removed the Band-aid, saying, "Dale, I'll put this in the trash-we won't need it any more."

Dale's face immediately flooded with relief and Jamie left me to say goodnight to him.

"Dale, give Henry his night-time kiss," I told him. "It's time to sleep."

He turned and did so, saying, "Night, night, Henry. Love you. See you in the morning."

I tucked Dale in and kissed him, saying, "Goodnight, Dale," as I cautiously turned to leave.
Then came his quiet, upset little voice, wanting more reassurance: "Mummy, Dale loves his dog."

I didn't want to make any more of a fuss and carried on, saying, "Yes, darling, and Henry loves Dale."

As I opened the bedroom door wider, Dale repeated softly, "Mummy, Dale loves his dog."

"Yes, that's good," I replied, still trying to leave. Then I stopped dead in my tracks as his next words hit me.

"And Dale loves his mummy."

Just five little words, yet I was numb, paralyzed with shock. Then somehow my brain started to function again, although my heart was pounding-I desperately didn't want to get this wrong. I turned around and knelt down beside Dale's bed, where I gave him a cautious and gentle hug, telling him, "Mummy loves you, too. And Daddy loves you. Goodnight, Dale."

His sweet, small voice replied, "And Dale loves Daddy."

I kissed him on the head, quietly left the room and wept-copious, silent tears. Through this mist I noticed Jamie, who had been waiting on the landing to see whether Dale had settled. We just gazed at each other, disbelieving. Then he took me in his arms as I continued to weep.

Profoundly Moving

I kind of feel like I don't even know where to start talking about this book. I knew very little about what families with autistic children go through, and after reading this book, a first hand account of a mother with two autistic children, I feel I can empathize much more with the struggle they go through. And while all the daily tasks and events, the simple communications and learning events most parents take for granted are extraordinarily more difficult, this book is in no way a downer.

First of all, I think the Gardners are fantastic parents. They worked tirelessly to help their son live the most normal life he possibly could. After years of working with him and using his obsessions (such as with Mickey Mouse and Thomas the Tank Engine) to teach him about human emotions and connecting with other people to minimal results, they discovered he loved dogs. And so they researched and searched until they were able to find a golden retriever puppy...the breed they thought would be a perfect fit.

A wonderful testament to the glory of dogs, this dog loved their son and became a companion to him and helped this family "get their son back."

This book is the story of a life...of Jamie and Nuala's life, of Dale's life, and of Henry's life. It's about struggle and triumph...parental love and the love of a dog. It's profoundly moving, inspiring, and educational. I highly, highly recommend it. Just be sure to have a box of tissues nearby when you read....you'll need it.

Slightly deceptive title ....

I have a great respect for any parent of a handicapped child and this mother was exceptional in her relentless passion to help her son. However I would not have purchased the book if I had known it's content was more pertaining to her struggle with coming to terms with her son's autism. The cover and write up led me to believe the book centred around the Labrador. Henry only came into the story after approximately 37% of the book was read and then the mother's detailed infertility issues also became a large feature. If a reader has a desire for more insight into the understanding of autism and how to handle it then this is an excellent book to read.

Honest, blunt, rewarding

a friend like henry,written by Nuala Gardner and published by Sourcebooks is a parents' book about autism...with all the fluffy bits removed. Honest, blunt, significant, rewarding. A well written, meaningful and very readable book.

a friend like henry is a book that tells the reader how frustrating, enlightening and magical living with autism can be, both for the person on the spectrum and those that live in the world parallel to ours.
I am happy to say that at no time in this book is it ever implied that Dale should be 'cured' of his autism, it is obvious throughout the book that the search is for coping mechanisms and behavioral modification.

One of the things I enjoyed most was that Nuala does not claim that pet therapy is the only solution to the above dilemma but she does openly and honestly share one way of using an autistic child's obsession to their family's best advantage.

One of the things I disliked the most about this book (besides the use of all lower case for the title and author name), was the way it rewired all my emotions and made me cry every few pages. I found that I had to pace myself through this book by reading it in between several others in order to give my emotions a break. I nearly couldn't continue on reading it at the end but I am not going to tell you why, as it will 'ruin' the ending for you. However, I am happy that I did carry on.

After reading this book I am still convinced that our N3S is still the child most likely to be savaged by a dog but I picked up a few tips encouraging on behavioral modification which we will apply through other mediums.

The section where Dale 'speaks' at the end of the book along with Nuala's afterword are nice twists and are the perfect ending to what I feel is a triumph of literary honesty. This is a very special book.

I speak as both an adult Aspie and a mother of an Aspie child when I say that this book will break your heart into several pieces and then show you interesting new ways to put it back together again.

This author through his research has finally revealed the third Fatima prophecy; and the prophecies of garabendale were especially interesting , would have liked to know about his opinions about medjegoria as it is in the Baltics where one of the Balkan leaders were assassinated. Very helpful guidebook!

Bob and his wonderful Theme park Press has done it again- put out another "must have" book for fans of the Disney resorts. Kristi Fredericks (501 Ways to Make the Most of Your Walt Disney World Vacation) is a bonâ fide Disney park fan, and frequent visitor, and it really shows in this very helpful guidebook.

Basically this little book compares the two mega resorts that are Disneyland (and DCA) and Disneyworld, with short concise listings of every attraction, show, restaurant and hotel. If a attraction exists in both parks, Kristi tell us which is better, and I mostly agree with her. (This can be important for fans who visit one set of parks often, but rarely get to the other, like us. Knowing you can skip Soaring over California on our Florida trips saves time. Knowing NOT to skip Magic Kingdoms Haunted Mansion is just as important).

I would have liked to read a little more of Kristi's fun commentary, but other than that minor quibble, this is almost required reading.

What a wonderful book. This really helps those of us that are having trouble deciding which park to go to. Very informative and easy to navigate, this book gives you some incredibly helpful information on every aspect of choosing between Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

This is a great book full of real experiences and good tips. We like it so much that we have ordered another copy to send to the Family back home. We especially liked the personal insights from the author in the “For What It’s Worth” section of each chapter. Highly Recommended.

From the Author
I first conceived of, and started writing, TWISTED REASONS, when I was living in Vienna and traveling throughout the former Soviet Union. I had read a great little book called THE ATOMIC BAZAAR, by William Langewiesche, that talked about the ease which with terrorists could get their hands on nuclear material from one of the secret cities where Stalin developed the atomic bomb. Delving further into research on the Soviet bomb, I learned about the many accidents and the utter disregard for human life and the environment in the Russian nuclear program right through to this day. With the International Atomic Energy Agency headquartered in Vienna, and its role in monitoring the disposition of nuclear material from the various sites in the former Soviet Union, I thought this could all form the basis for a great thriller set at least partly in a a city I knew well and loved. In thinking about it further, I found that Graham Greene's novel, THE THIRD MAN, and Carol Reed's wonderful film based on it, set in post-War Vienna, which takes the story of two friends, one of whom gets involved in trading tampered antibiotics, would serve as an excellent template for the beginning of my thriller. The two friends in my book have Hungarian-American backgrounds, and this adds an extra layer of depth as I am able to weave some of my own family's experiences in to the novel.

About the Author
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Geza escaped with his family in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution, immigrating to Canada the same year. He grew up in Toronto, attending the University of Toronto Schools, where he was School Captain. He graduated from Harvard University with a BA in Human Ecology in 1972 after taking a break in his studies to work as a host in the Ontario Pavilion at Expo’70 in Osaka, Japan. Geza was selected as a Rhodes Scholar from Ontario, attending Oxford University and graduating with a BA / MA in Human Sciences in 1974; he completed his studies with a MSc in Economics from London School of Economics and Politics in 1975. Geza represented Canada as an épée fencer in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. Geza is a prolific writer and has produced thrillers, memoirs and a collection of poetry. He is currently finishing a thriller about a coup d’état in France as well as finalizing the second book in the Cold War Escape Trilogy. His next project is to complete the second volume of the Twisted Trilogy. Geza’s professional experience has included stints in government, international organizations, finance and environmental entrepreneurship. Since 2004, he has been managing a few investments mainly in the clean energy sector and devoting himself to his family and his writing. He is on the Origination / Investment Committee of Syntaxis Capital, a mezzanine fund investing in Central and Eastern Europe and other emerging markets. Geza is a citizen of Canada and Hungary, and currently divides his time between Bordeaux, France, and Barnard, Vermont, with frequent trips back to the many places he has lived, including New York, Boston, Montreal, Toronto, London, Frankfurt, Budapest, Vienna and Montevideo.

This is a good, solid read. A thriller with politics, nuclear bombs, beautiful agents, and a regular Joe caught in the middle. Set in current day Vienna, the story loosely follows the film “The Third Man”, adding current politics, terrorists, and morals.
The backstory is revealed through the main character’s family history, many times in first person and set in WW2 and just after. Painstakingly researched for the history of the nuclear research project in Russia, and the Russian annexing of Hungary and Austria, and also the modern day situations there, this book is a treasure trove for anyone interested in those subjects.
The long descriptions, which would be fascinating to those mentioned above, do slow the story down a couple of times, but are necessary to follow the twists and turns of the plot.
It’s an exciting story, kicked off by the main character arriving in Vienna to visit and old friend, only to find him dead in a car accident hours before. From there he gets tangled up in missing uranium, terrorists, a beautiful Interpol agent, hidden agendas, secret deals, and a fight for his life, which he may lose.
Even if history isn’t your thing, I still recommend you get this book. It’s filled with strippers, Russian mobsters, and intrigue.

A Nice Blend of Suspense and Old World Charm

The author, Geza Tatrallyay, really knows his stuff when it comes to nuclear fission and Stalin's brutal policies in the Soviet Union. He has put together a truly intriguing crime thriller, reminiscent of the fabulous German crime novels of the 1950s. Indeed, there is a good dose of Eric Kaestner and a lot of old world charm in Twisted Reasons :)
