A fun cozy for any time of year, not just December

As far as mystery books go, I'm way more into cozies than something darker and grittier. I enjoyed reading the first book in this series, The Ginseng Conspiracy. It introduced us to a group of friends that, true to cozy format, get reluctantly dragged into a murder investigation. In this sequel, after an "accidental" death at a local retirement home at a Christmas party, amateur sleuth Kay Driscoll is brought in by suspicious residents of the home due to her exploits in the first book.
For me, the book is about the characters. Kay and her friends are starting to feel like my own friends. I felt rather nervous toward the end, when all heck was breaking loose and I wasn't sure if anything bad was going to happen to any of them. As it is...well, you'll just have to read to find out. I started out reading just one chapter at a time, but by the end, I couldn't put it down. I think I read the last third of the book in one long reading session.
It's also about food. Between all the holiday parties and family get-togethers, I spent nearly the whole time wanting to crawl into the book and eat with them. If nothing else, it's raised my interest in exploring my local coffee shops and bakeries.
There is, however, one character that aggravates me a little. That would be Phil, Kay's husband. In both books, his reaction to certain events seems to be, "Someone just tried to kill you, Kay? Well, I'm glad they failed. See you later, I have to go make a guitar." If I were Kay, I'd be getting a little ticked off at Phil's seemingly all-consuming obsession with jazz and guitars. But then again, it adds a little more realism. I mean, people are weird like that. In the past, I've probably said something to my wife along the lines of, "You had a bad day at work? Sorry to hear that. See you later, I have to go compare the career on-base percentages of Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio."
As a benefit, I read it right around Christmas. While it certainly helped get into the spirit of the book, I don't think it'll negatively impact your experience at any other time of year.

Murder comes to Christmas

"Murder Under the Tree," the second book in the Kay Driscoll series by Susan Bernhardt is out; now fans of the fearless sleuth can rejoice.

It is Christmas time in Sudbury Falls, 'Tis Time to be Merry, but as we've come to know when Kay is around, murder will follow her as it did Jessica Fletcher in the delightful television show "Murder She Wrote."

Attending a Christmas tea at a local retirement home, Hawthorne Hills, with one of her best friends, Deirdre, Kay witnesses a death, which is later ruled out as accidental. Residents suspect foul play and ask Kay to look into it. Not one to sit back and let injustice rule the day, Kay throws herself wholeheartedly into the investigation, despite repeated pleas by her husband not to get involved.

Before the book is over, a cascade of murders, three to be exact, take place as well as two attempts on Kay's life. Bernhardt had made an impressive debut with "The Ginseng Conspiracy," the first book featuring Kay Driscoll as an amateur sleuth, but "Murder Under the Tree" is by far the stronger of the two. Here Bernhardt shows her mastery of description, bringing her characters and settings to life with vivid and imaginative prose, and uses a touch of humor to great effect in a scene where Kay, who will go to any length to uncover the truth, disguises herself as the first victim's sibling to find information important to her investigation: a priceless moment in a book full of plot's twists. A sub-plot by way of a stranger arriving in Sudbury Falls is skillfully integrated into the main theme, adding tension to a story that keeps us turning pages until the end.

The reader's love for Kay's plucky and determined personality extend to her two best friends, Deirdre and Elizabeth, who were introduced to us in "The Ginseng Conspiracy." As they were then, both are integral to the plot here, helping Kay solve the puzzle of murders that had changed the sound of Christmas bells in Sudbury Falls to one of fear and gloom. When the book ends we miss the interaction between these friends and wonder what will come to Sudbury Falls next to bring them once again to the pages of another Bernhardt's cozy. This reader, for one, can't wait.

A Great Cozy Mystery!

When I first read The Ginseng Conspiracy, I was new, not to mysteries, but to 'cozy' mysteries. Susan Bernhardt's first book was my initiation into the group of Cozy Mystery Lovers, and I could hardly wait for her second book to come out.

Murder Under the Tree did not disappoint! If anything, it was more intriguing than the first, because i had the killer pegged from the start...then I changed it to another character...then to a third. It is just that kind of book, suspenseful, with clues demanding that you KNOW who the perpertrator is...only to find out you're wrong!

Kay Driscoll and her buddies, Deidre and Elizabeth, are again in control. Almost. Kay's husband Phil doesn't want her snooping into the death of a beloved caretaker that occurred while she was visiting Hawthorne Hills Retirement Home, but when it is ruled accidental, Kay and her cohorts decide not to leave things alone. Twists and turns find corruption, violence, revenge, and even fraud going on in the seemingly benign retirement home, and Kay is in the big middle of everything. She is determined to find the killer...or killers...even at the risk, twice, of her own life.

This is the second of a great series, and once again, I'm looking forward to the third and last book...although I can't imagine not ever again reading about the exploits of Kay Driscoll and her sometimes whacky friends.

I read the first one, a street cat named bob a couple of years ago. i quickly starting following James on Facebook and was excited to learn there would be a second book. i pre-ordered it as soon as it was available and waited until its release date. it was well worth the wait. it made me laugh it made me cry, and it left me wanting more. anyone who is a cat lover...not a animal lover will love this book. not only that it continues to show the power of an animal to help heal a human soul.

I love Bob

This is the continuing story of my favorite cat and his owner. I first met Bob in the book A Streetcat named Bob and was touched how the 2 street souls saved each other. I couldn't wait for a sequel. Here it is.
The tale this time more of the interaction of Bob and James. How extraordinary Bob is and how jealous and cruel people still can be even when you are trying your best to be your best. A good read and I hope again for more on Bob and James. I am a big fan of Bob!!!

A Very Moving Book

I've just finished this sequel to Mr. Bowen's first book on Bob and find it every bit as moving as the first one. I've even bought a copy of the children's version and will read that next. I've never been a fan of Facebook, but am considering joining just to find out what James and Bob do next. Also to see whether there'll be another book! I think it's great they helped raise 5,000 pounds for the animal charity!

About the Author
Cheryl Sinz graduated Athens High School in Ohio, 1962, and Ohio University, cum laude, in 1966, earning a BFA as a piano major. Following graduation, she taught and performed piano in several institutions of higher learning, including Indiana University, Bloomington, where she was awarded a piano assistantship during post-graduate study from 1967-1968. From 1970-1971, she initiated a general music program on the Outer Banks of North Carolina as superintendent for Dare County Public Schools and taught general music from Kitty Hawk to Cape Hatteras. She taught applied piano at Indiana-Purdue's Regional Campus in Fort Wayne from 1974-1980, and Yellowstone Baptist College, Billings, Montana, 1989-1999. Additionally, Cheryl has been a private piano and theory teacher in her home for over forty years, averaging as many as forty students per week at the height of her teaching career. She and her husband, a musician as well, live near Billings and belong to Laurel Baptist Church. They delight in camping, hiking, and traveling and are the proud parents of two sons.

Life with my new humans was fraught with difficulties. Having been top dog at the shelter for many years, I was not accustomed to such close human interactions. It was going to be a year full of surprises and unexpected discoveries for the Bones.

Helpful, and not a hard read

This short easy to read book will take you through the steps of what to do when you find that your pooch has gotten a bit to round in the middle. It gives you advice on what to ask your vet, and even gives you a helpful site to help you calculate some dog food calories. I even found myself laughing at some of the humorous references the author made at some things that dogs do. I highly recommend this book.

Connecting the dots for the cyclist in the urban context

From helmet use to land use, and from planning your ride to finding your tribe, Benesh takes the reader on a wide-ranging ride to look at everything you have typically pondered about urban cycling, and then on to a cargo bike full of issues you didn’t know were issues. About the only thing not addressed is how to wrench on your ride, but that is well covered in other books and online. This unique book stands apart.

Throughout, Benesh is concerned about making the connections between how and why we ride (and why we don’t ride) and our urban context. He is concerned to help the reader “understand where we ride and the influences, changes and happenings in cities that impact this conversation on urban cycling.”

The read is loose and conversational, but the material will keep your mind engaged (no coasting!) as it variously reflects Benesh’s academic credentials and his practical from-the-saddle perspective, gained from mile upon mile of pedaling his singlespeed around Portland (and other cities).

From suggestions on what to wear (bottom line: “…just be yourself, be comfortable, and wear normal stuff”) and what to ride (bottom line: a bike), to discussions about gentrification and the bicycle as a vehicle of empowerment, Benesh offers a fresh and interesting perspective on how a bike shapes, and is shaped by, the urban environment.

For the urban cyclist who wants to dig a bit deeper into their understanding of how they fit in to the flow of the city; for the wonk who relishes putting all the urban land use and transportation puzzle pieces together; and even for the newbie cyclist who just needs some encouragement to pull the bike out of the garage, The Bohemian Guide will be a worthwhile read. Must read if you want to be an Urban Cyclist.

Sean offers a playful insight into his inner struggle or being a urban commuter vs his love of mountain biking. Through great story and insight he offers us readers a insider look on how to be a urban cyclist. Sean guides us through selecting the right bike, gear, and needed accessories to ensure we are effective bohemian cyclists. The mystery of how to be a urban cyclist is revealed within these pages. If you want to learn to be a proper urban cyclist I suggest sitting down with this book.

I enjoy the ongoing fashionista conversation that is heavily anti-lyrca in its argument, yet there is an attempt by Sean to convince us readers he is not a fashionista while offering his tips on fashion such as cut off grandpa pants with singed ends and the low cost they are at local thrift shops. Perhaps this is part of what makes him to be bohemian despite it being his ancestral roots.

Sean also provides a valued insight to planners walking through the value in economics and the positive impact of proper bicycle facilities can have for a city. Digging into the conversation Sean gives the reader an valuable information about the ethics, equality, and justice of cycling. He shows us how bicycles level the playing field and are an important part of transportation regardless of social class.

More than I expected and super fun to read

This book really exceeded my expectations - mainly because I expected a book about riding bikes, and it was really about so much more than just urban cycling! Sean gives excellent context for urban cycling both from a practical as well as social perspective. I feel like it's super beneficial for anyone and everyone to consider ideas outside themselves and from a more complete viewpoint. This book helps the reader gain a more thoughtful and informed viewpoint all while being super fun and engaging. This one was a great pleasure!

This book describes an incredible journey through cancer from the viewpoint of a loving, caring partner. There are joys, difficulties, struggles and every possible emotion that goes along with being someone's stretcher-bearer. Although there is a lot of medical information shared, the underlying story is one of devotion, courage and love.

I tried to weave a pattern in my novel of the actions and conditions which surfaced during our prolonged involvement in both the Afghan and Iraqi wars. The novel's protagonist is Mark Ericksen, a courageous Navy SEAL Team Six platoon leader who was a member of an elite tier-one, Joint Special Operations Command team involved in high-value-target-missions in Afghanistan. Ericksen personified the best attributes of a special operations forces operator: duty, honor, and country. He expected one-hundred percent from his team members. He trusted his men and knew should he get injured or killed in action, they would never leave him behind, nor would he them. Failure wasn't in his vocabulary. When America urgently needed his services again, the CIA tasked him for Operation Avenging Eagles.
America had every right to launch Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan with the coalition forces in October, 2001, in response to 9/11. The objective was to capture or kill Osama bin Laden, the Al-Qaeda leader responsible for 9/11, and to eliminate the Taliban for providing Al-Qaeda sanctuary in Afghanistan. The role of the Special Operations Forces was crucial. 
However, the invasion of Iraq in 2003, which one might argue was either based on faulty intelligence or fabricated intelligence, will go down as one of America's worst foreign policy decisions in our brief  history. It is also America's longest war. The repercussions from those decisions are ever-present daily in the media, and has impacted every American citizen as to the thousands of American military men and women killed, hundreds of thousands physically or mentally wounded, and the loss of trillions of  tax payer dollars. 

About the Author
A marketing consultant with experience in Biometrics Technology from 1991 through 2013, Barry L. Becker served as vice-president of marketing from 1984-1986 for Eyedentify, a company specializing in eye retinal technology for positive identification, and transitioned to vice-president of international sales for the company from 1986-1991. He traveled over 500,000 miles setting up distribution channels and calling on targeted customers; foreign government departments (intelligence agencies/services, ministries of defense and interior); nuclear power plants; aerospace and defense contractors; and banks. In 1987, his article entitled "Eyedentify counters security threat," appeared in The Journal of Defense & Diplomacy, Volume 5, Number 8. The Ericksen Connection is his first published novel. Barry and his wife reside in the greater Portland area. Mr. Becker has a B.A. degree from San Francisco State University.

A thoughtful thriller

Good thriller and author seems to know the high security industry quite well. The style was crisp and it reminded me most of David Baldacci with the plot moving right along. Although we meet some of the usual villains of the terrorist era, having the main character portrayed as a working guy and not another super CIA or James Bond type made the book more enjoyable and realistic even though it is a tale in the heroic fiction genre. The main character's PTSD was also a realistic part of his character and integral to the plot. Lastly, I found the author's patriotism coming through but with obvious criticism of the price we all pay for our military industrial complex. I liked this book both for entertainment and its thoughtfulness.

A realistic and quick read

Being retired from a career involving NASA/DOD/ARPA and commercial space/remotely-manned/automated systems projects, consulting, world travel, and a TS clearance -- this novel piqued my curiosity.

Within several chapters it became clear that it was different from the usual spy thriller with none of the "imagineered" super-human antics. It proved to be a totally plausible fast-paced present-world drama involving the military/industrial/banking/espionage matrix, betrayal, deception, murder money-laundering, a touch of romance, and -- a faithful dog. All this is cleverly interwoven with a multinational terrorist mission to simultaneously cripple three U.S. cities using smuggled potent nuclear devices, and -- how the mission was derailed. The spectrum of technology used involved drones, satellites, biometrics/encrypted secure communications, stealth infiltrations, an escape in a mini-submarine launched underwater from a luxurious yacht -- to a mixed martial-art/weapon style dogfight. All this takes place as protagonist Ericksen (a former navy SEAL team leader with PTSD) seeks to exit a danger filled multi-faceted life.

To amplify this clever timely drama -- I intend to also get the audio book version with its use of character matching cultural accents. Additionally, I feel it's worthy of an Amazon Studio, Netflix, Hollywood, or other video/TV/theater production in the near future. See the trailer on YouTube.

Enjoyed the book

The book leverages fiction in a unique way built around many of the non-fiction problems facing America today. It follows Ericksen through a web of crazy terrorist acts that all stem back to an earlier poor decision during one moment that would define him on the battle field. I like that it helped shape and define the quality of his character by the end of the story.

She has been teaching crochet for more than 20 years, through Girl Scouting, various community centers, summer camps, at Charlotte’s Fibers (a yarn shop in Western North Carolina), and the John C. Campbell Folk School. She is active in the online community, Ravelry, and has written articles and patterns for Interweave Crochet and the e-zines, Crochet Insider and Crochet Uncut. Deb and her musician/potter husband, Don, are the parents of seven grown children and have several grandchildren, most of whom also crochet. In addition to crochet, Deb enjoys knitting, embroidery, painting, fiber sculpture, gardening, performing folk music, and reading.

Great for a begginer.

A wonderful step-by-step book that really explains and shows a beginner how to crochet. Or if you learned a long time ago and need a refresher for stitches you don't use a lot.

About the Author
Award-winning feature columnist Dave Rasdal was born in Lake City, Iowa, grew up in Marshalltown and graduated from Spencer High School in 1971. He completed a double major in mass communications and English in 1975 at the University of South Dakota and began his newspaper career as sports editor of the Spencer Daily Reporter. After two years in Spencer and two years as city editor in Vinton, he joined The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) as a general assignment reporter before initiating his Ramblin’ column in 1982. He was cited as Iowa columnist of the year by both the Associated Press and the Iowa Newspaper Association before leaving The Gazette in 2013. He currently lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

If your faith in mankind feels a bit tattered these days, you can spruce it up by reading Dave Rasdal’s latest collection of stories about Eastern Iowa people, places and things.
Like many, I read Rasdal’s Ramblin’ columns in The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). The columns were always well-written slices of life. Pulled together, though, the sum is greater than the parts, producing a quiet, powerful synergy.
This is the second book of columns to come out of Rasdal’s three decades of roaming Iowa’s “blue-line” highways. Like the first book, this one reminds you, again and again, of how many kind and funny souls live among us, if only we ask them about their lives.
In this book, Rasdal provides conversational introductions and follow-ups to most of the columns. You can tell from the interludes that he likes people and enjoys drawing them out and telling their stories. He’s not afraid to be positive, even romantic.
One of my favorite columns is about Joe McNabb of Cedar Rapids, who began collecting angels after his wife, “Willie,” died of Alzheimer’s in 2006. When the “mayor of Noelridge” died six years later, his kids and grandkids gave away as many of the angels as they could before finally spreading out late at night, leaving angels on neighborhood doorsteps and hanging them from trees and downspouts.
In another story, Diane Jacobs of Cedar Rapids tells us about playing her cello with the symphony for 61 years. Gladys Nekola of Toledo explains why she cooked on a wood stove for 50 years before finally getting a gas range in 1989. Dave Engle of Marion has an amazing story about what happened when his SUV was stolen.
Ed Saldana, a school crossing guard the kids call “Grampa,” talks from a hospital bed, saying he’s no hero, even though he saved a 7-year-old’s life in Cedar Rapids.
Rasdal also tells the stories of the little spots in Eastern Iowa—Muckersville, Spillville, Belle Plaine—and visits the cities and hamlets along the Mississippi River during the great flood of 1993. Particularly memorable are two columns about a couple who move their house up a hill to escape repeated floods in Chelsea, and the surprising reaction from some of those left behind.
In another series of columns, Rasdal goes farther afield, taking readers across country in a semi-trailer truck, complete with truck stops, casinos, and interesting conversations with the driver and characters along the route.
Taken together, the collected columns produce a tidal wave of good will—just in time for the season, or for any time you need a reminder about our shared humanity.
