About the Author
Anne Lafferty was born in rural Wisconsin, and in some ways never left. She has been employed as a teacher and a musician, has worked in the field of nursing, is currently a freelance writer and author in Scottsdale, AZ. That being said, some of her most intense living was spent off the grid, no utilities, survivalist. Lafferty raised her children in the hills and woods and fields with the smell of wood smoke, the rules of strength and endurance that only the land can teach. They remember.

Good read.

If you enjoy country living or just imagining living off the grid, this book will allow a look into the lifestyle. I was filled with a nostalgia for the farm animals and outdoor life as I read Core Hollow. It is about simplicity of living. The reader also gets a glimpse of living with someone slipping into madness and the affects on family. Good read.

Plutarch described Antigonus the One Eyed (382-301 BC) 'as 'the oldest and greatest of Alexander's successors,' Antigonus loyally served both Philip II and Alexander the Great as they converted his native Macedonia into an empire stretching from India to Greece. After Alexander’s death, Antigonus, then governor of the obscure province of Phrygia, seemed one of the least likely of his commanders to seize the dead king’s inheritance. Yet within eight years of the king’s passing, through a combination of military skill and political shrewdness, he had conquered the Asian portion of the empire.

His success caused those who controlled the European and Egyptian parts of the empire to unite against him. For another fourteen years he would wage war against a coalition of the other Successors, Ptolemy, Lysimachus, Seleucus and Cassander. In 301 he would meet defeat and death in the Battle of Ipsus. The ancient writers saw Antigonus' life as a cautionary tale about the dangers of hubris and vaulting ambition. Despite his apparent defeat, his descendants would continue to rule as kings and create a dynasty that would rule Macedonia for over a century. Jeff Champion narrates the career of this titanic figure with the focus squarely on the military aspects.

About the Author
Jeff Champion studied Classics and Ancient History at the University of Western Australia, achieving a First Class degree. During his subsequent career with the Australian Customs Service his interest in the ancient world has never waned. He has travelled extensively in the Mediterranean, visiting Classical sites with his long-suffering wife. He is the author of Pyrrhus of Epirus (2009) and the two-volume The Tyrants of Syracuse (2010 and 2012), were all published by Pen & Sword Books and received much praise. He lives in his native Western Australia.

Telling the story of the life and career of Antigonos the One-Eyed is perhaps one of the best ways to present the rather complicated, long and very tumultuous Wars between the Successors following the death of Alexander.

He was presented by Plutarch as “the oldest and greatest of Alexander's successors”. To a large extent, his career fully justified Plutarch’s assessment. Contrary to the other Successors after 319 and the death of Antipater, he was of the generation of Philip II, not of Alexander. He is also the first to have come close to reunifying Alexander’s Empire, although he ultimately failed and was killed at over eighty in a huge battle. He was clearly a rather formidable individual. As the nickname Cyclops shows, he was a giant of a man (certainly well over six feet tall), even among the Macedonians who often tended to be taller than other Greeks. He was also One-Eyed. However, contrary to what the nickname given to him by his enemies might also suggest, he was far from being silly or gullible.

The great merit of this rather excellent overview by Jeff Champion is to present the “life and times” of this largely unknown giant (in all senses of the term) among the Successors in a way that is accessible to all. Given the complexity of the multiple wars among the Successors, some of which were fought on several fronts, coming up with a clear presentation of these wars in which Antigonos played such a central role is no mean feat.

The two first chapters are also particularly valuable. In just about twenty pages, Jeff Champion manages to provide succinct but nevertheless sufficient context on Macedonia, its geography and its history, and the reigns of both Philip II and Alexander III. The clarity of the presentation and the amount of ground covered in so little space while making all of the main points are simply remarkable.

The book's clarity is achieved while making use of all the main references on the Successors, and on Antogonos in particular. These are either listed in the bibliography or in the various notes. Six maps and four sets of schematics help the reader in following the main campaigns and battles, while five appendices deal with specific issues that have led to lengthy debates among scholars, such as the literary sources, thorny issues related to chronology, but also the meaning of Antigonos’ policy of “Freedom” for the Greek cities that would be frequently – and just as cynically – be used after him as a political ploy, including by Rome.

Another interesting annex which usefully completes the narrative is titled “The Cost of War”. This annex, by listing the pay rates of various types of soldiers, the costs involved in building and fitting out a fleet and the financial resources that were available to Antigonos and his son Demetrios, is a particularly valuable one. This is because it helps explain how they managed to more than hold their own against the three and then four other main Successors for so long, and also why they all “ganged up” against the Antigonids who were more powerful than each of them separately. Incidentally, this annex, and additional information contained in the book, may also be useful for those wanting to conduct wargames based on the Successors.

This book has plenty of other qualities and while I will refrain from listing all of them, if only to keep this review to a manageable size, some need to be emphasised.

One is them is that the narrative also includes what little is known about the career of Antigonos before the death of Alexander. In particular, the book, drawing on pre-existing scholarship, shows that he did not “come out of the blue” but was close to Philip and a tried and tested commander with lots of experience by the time Alexander came to the throne. It also shows that although very little is heard of him during Alexander’s conquest, the role assigned to Antigonos was vital. He had his work cut out for him and he managed to fulfil his role which was to keep Alexander’s lines of communications with Greece and Macedonia open despite a little known major Persian attempt to reconquer Asia Minor.

Another strongpoint of this book is a largely successful attempt to present the personality and character of the old but very energetic warlord, while remaining largely unbiased. An interesting piece is the contrast drawn between the ageing and no nonsense commander, who seems to have had “the common touch” and been genuinely popular with both his troops and his subjects, and his dashing, very talented but supremely arrogant favourite son Demetrios.

A further and related merit is a comparison of the generalship of both father and son and their shared responsibilities in the crushing defeat of Ipsos where Antigonos was killed. An interesting feature of this book is that Jeff Champion lays – quite rightly in my opinion – part of the blame at the feet of the old warrior, contrary to Billows who, in his book on Antigonos, is at times rather biased and tends, like Plutarch, to blame Demetrios and his hubris for just about everything that went wrong.

There are however a few, relatively minor, setbacks as well. The least important is the existence of some typos and few repetitions, with both seeming to become more frequent in the second half of the book.

A second limitation, and a more important one, is that Jeff Champion has indeed come up with a very successful narrative of this titanic figure but he has almost exclusively focused on the political and military aspects and on the various campaigns and wars in particular. There is just a mention towards the end about Antigonos being an effective administrator and ruler but this very much feels like an afterthought. Largely missing from this narrative is the role played by Antigonos in the creation of the Hellenistic State and the example he set, and which other Successors were quick to emulate. This can be found in Billows’ book (Antigonos the One-Eyed and the creation of the Hellenistic State (1990).

Military history of Antigonus the One-Eyed

This is one of the better Pen and Sword titles that I have read. I really enjoyed Jeff Champion's previous book about Pyrrhus of Epirus, and this book left me just as satisfied. It does not cover as much ground as Richard Billows' biography of Antigonus, but it is not meant to. That book is a bit more well rounded with discussions of Antigonus' rule, relations with the Greeks, etc. This book is unabashedly a military history, and does a great job of covering the wars, battles, and sieges of Antigonus' career. If that's the kind of book you're looking for, and if you're interested in Hellenistic warfare or just the history of the early successors, then this is a great book to pick up. Mr. Champion also does not always agree with Billows, so the book is not just a rehash of the narrative half of Billows' book, though there are similarities. Personally I bought both, and I'm happy with that decision.

Power of Prayer and Mr. Mueller's work with English Orphans

I read this book years ago while I was just a teenager. Just today I turned 30. Since the time I was a young teenager I have had a burden to help troubled children. The book only fueled my desire to work with children. I am also a devout Christian and know the tremendous power that prayer can bring into one's life. It is 2:32am where I am at and although it has been over 15 years since I read this book, I woke up after several dreams tonight with George Mueller's life on my mind. I can't rest until I know even more about George Mueller's life. I need direction in the way that I am to serve. The book is that powerful. More importantly, the testimony of Mr. Mueller's faith and dedication have inspired me to commit my life to the service of God. I hope you are inspired as well.

What an encouragement to my soul

George Muller was an 19th century Christian leader in England who took the Lord's command to look after orphans and widows in their distress very seriously. He build and maintained orphanages caring for thousands of kids over time never once asking any person for a penny to support the work. He also built works around Bible and Gospel tract distribution and foreign missions with the same dependence solely on the Lord. The book is essentially a collection of Muller's journal entries with some corresponding background to help explain the circumstances surrounding the entries. It is extremely well done and being Kindle free makes it even better. The book is clearly worth spending some $$ on.

Throughout the book I was repeatedly moved by the intensity of this man's faith. Although he repeatedly said he did not believe he had any special gift of faith, I don't know whether I could aspire to count on God the way this brother did, even in the direst of circumstances. Journal entries covering six decades of work in building and sustaining orphanages provide a well rounded view of how his faith remained consistent over time.

Here is one of his purpose statements for recording these things for us:

Now, if I, a poor man, simply by prayer and faith, obtained without asking any individual, the means for establishing and carrying on an Orphan-House, there would be something which, with the Lord's blessing, might be instrumental in strengthening the faith of the children of God, besides being a testimony to the consciences of the unconverted, of the reality of the things of God.

More than once in the book he professes great thanks for the many trials that he endured because they increased his faith and dependence on God. This could be the most striking element of the book to me. Listen to how he explains this aspect of his Christian walk:

The more I am in a position to be tried in faith with reference to my body, my family, my service for the Lord, my business, etc., the more shall I have opportunity of seeing God's help and deliverance; and every fresh instance, in which He helps and delivers me, will tend toward the increase of my faith.

Muller actually looked forward to the times where He saw no earthly solution so he could wait on God to deliver. It is a truly remarkable story in today's age of "I'll believe it when I see it".

The book is highly recommended.

A testimony to the power of God.

George Mueller's life's work was to have G-d glorified, by living a life of total dependance on Him. One of Mr. Mueller's chief rules was never to tell people the needs of the orphanages, but only to ask G-d for help. This book is a collection of exerpts, a kind of journal, that describes the wonderful ways in which God did indeed answer Mr. Mueller's prayers by providing for thousands of orphans often on a meal to meal basis for over 40 years! The powerful ways that G-d provided for each need will touch every reader's heart. It will give encouragement to fellow Christians and challenge the skeptical. I have never read a more powerful account of Jesus' faithfulness to His children and would strongly reccomend this book to all people.

I Like This Author

This was the first book by Abby Green that I read and I really liked it. I just finished reading a second book by her today and I believe she has me hooked and not just on her writing. She's made it acceptable to find the French just as dark and intriguing and alpha male and attractive as the Greek and Italian heroes so prevalent in all other Harlequin Presents novels. Finally we have a different ethnicity on the block. She gets a star for that alone.

My main issue with this book is that the back cover states that the heroine (Alana) is a virgin. Seeing as we find out she used to be married to a football star, I really wanted insight into how she was still a virgin and thought there would be some intrigue there, and in fact, was looking forward to it. But in reading the book, we find out she isn't a virgin, she just never enjoyed sex with her cheating, lying husband. I have a feeling that this issue had more to do with an oversight by the publisher than by the author, so I'll let it go.

What I've come to realize is that Abby Green books spend a lot of time on character development, and she does this so well, unlike other authors who have tried to do the same, you end up with insight of both characters which makes them both appealing and human without the book being boring or lagging. Very few authors seem to be able to accomplish this feat so kudos to Ms. Green.

While the situation in which Alana finds herself (unemployed and facing public scrutiny) creates some tension for her and the hero, don't expect a lot of conflict or verbal abuse from the alpha male as we've come to expect from other Harlequin authors. Don't expect a doormat heroine either. She is a career woman who fought to get where she was and took on a lot of scrutiny and hate to do it.

Expect sex scenes so hot they'll curl your toes, a nicely woven plot, and realistic protagonists. I especially love the epilogue. So many times you read these books and the fantasy they weave is so great that you know in real life those couples wouldn't make it past the first month of marriage. This book makes you walk away knowing that 50 years from now they will be the little old couple that still adore each other and that's what I consider a true romance book.

About the Author
Jay Lacklen is a retired Air Force reserve Lt Col with 12,500 flying hours who teaches Air Force pilot training simulators at Columbus AFB, Mississippi. He flew in all major military actions from Vietnam to the 2003 Iraq War. Lacklen graduated in 1969 from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill with an American history degree and is married with four grown daughters and one grandchild.

"Flying the Line" is a straight forward and truthful account of the life of a USAF pilot

I finished reading this book on the second day after getting it in the mail... it is very good. It was too good to put down and after reading it I'm looking forward to the next two books in the series that Lt Col Lacklen is in the process of writing.

I don't know what I expected but Jay Lacklen is a very good writer, he covered the subject matter in a way that made it possible for me to visualze things that I'd never actually seen before. The book was also fun, and Jay admitted to some things that will surprise you, it surprised me.

I would never give away the story... I will not read the jacket covers on any book... I want the whole story in the book with paper pages. My wife reads all book covers... I won't let her to say more to me than "Honey, you should read this one." With that, I hope that all of you get a copy and read it.... it is a fantastic book...

I was in the USAF several years before the author and was in the Strategic Air Command, and stationed at Loring Air Force Base. As I read the book I recalled memories of events that I had forgotten for close to half a century.

The same airplanes are still flying, and these pilots are still protecting all of us. Lt Col Lacklen is still training military pilots, and I'm still proud to be an American... and an USAF Veteran.

The personal side of SAC

Excellent story. Funny, sad, and everything in between. Brought back a lot of memories as I was a Avionics Technician at the same time and at the same locations. If my memory is correct, I worked the same airframes that Col Lacklen flew and I am sure that we crossed paths many times at Loring and Dover. Great writing and I cannot wait until the next book is published.

Awesome read all, both military and non-military!

Awesome read all, both military and non-military readers! For those who have military backgrounds it is a great read and will bring back many fond memories. For non-military types, you will find it most entertaining, as well as most informative from a historical perspective, and will gain a great personal perspective of what our military brethren went through during the Vietnam era, which I believe was most unique, compared to other wars. I found that the book was very hard to put down and could not wait to read the next chapter. I also found myself smiling, sometimes laughing out loud, as I read each page relating to LT COL Lacklen’s day to day personal experiences and perspectives of what he, and most of us, were going through then. Lacklen is brutally honest throughout the book and holds nothing back, especially with his “political” perspectives, which some may challenge, but should seriously respect, as his logic and facts are well founded. Thank you LT Col Lacklen for serving our country, protecting freedom for all, and for sharing your great story. I cannot wait to read your next book.

Reading Lincoln: A must for anyone with interest in this time period. The references are not just your ordinary references to your basic Lincoln. Instead this a very extensive set of resources with a great deal of texture of the people, places, and events that formed history. I not only gained knowledge but found leads on topics related to the President, the Civil War, the collateral damage and loss to all concerned, but also to the characters of the period. You can feel the passion of the authors as well as their insight. This not just a "one reading" book. Instead it is a lifetime resource for so many topics.

Excellent, entertaining, and interesting reviews on books about Lincoln!

As a life member of the Lincoln Forum, I have attended every session of this group, and have purchased many books about Lincoln. I have read most of them and have enjoyed learning more about so many different aspects of Lincoln's life and presidency. But there are still so many more worthwhile books about him that are out there to be considered. Imagine my joy at finding a book that not only lists some 275 books about Lincoln, but which provides very honest and serious critiques of all of them. Dr. Tom Peet and David Keck have spent manny, many hours reading these books and offering their take on each book's content and what is good or bad about it. I especially enjoyed reading what they had to say about books I had also read, and was pleasantly surprised to see that I agreed with much of their perspective. But they also peaked my interest in a number of other books I have yet to read, and have already begun gathering such books to read in the months ahead. I believe that any serious fan of Lincoln will gain a lot by "Reading Lincoln".

No serious historian of either the man or the civil war should be without this reference. In addition to unearthing historical facts and perspectives I hadn't been aware of, the bibliography also shed light on the authors they are reviewing, including many people who either knew Lincoln personally or shared his time.

Great, Wonderful Read ~!

Richard Loren is not a professional writer, however his tales of working in a less than honest music business may be spot on. Without a legacy to maintain, Mr. Loren's memory gives a honest account of working with such diverse musical artists as Liberace, The Doors, David Grisman, the Rowan Brothers, the Chambers Brothers, and the Grateful Dead, High Notes is a fascinating fast read giving his first hand accounts of bailing out Jim Morrison in New Haven, and arranging the Grateful Dead's legendary trip to Egypt. Mr. Loren's take on a totally drugged out Garcia (heroin) taking the veil off in detail just how Garcia's heroin addiction affected the judgments and decisions regarding the band. He also notes that Bill Graham who also has a mythic status in the San Francisco music scene was less then honest in dealing with the Grateful Dead and other bands ( And that's putting it nicely). But this is no trashy tell all book as Mr. Loren shares his fond and loving memories as well as his sadness of what could have been. In High Notes Richard Loren tells an honest first hand tale with no axe to grind and no legacy to embellish to those who want to listen..

My only knock is that it to too quick a read.

Fascinating read for anyone interested in the music and cultural events of the late 1960s and early 1970s

This is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the music and cultural events of the late 1960s and early 70s.

The author is a unique witness. He was the manager of the Grateful Dead, a good friend of Jerry Garcia, and a friend/acquaintance with many of the personalities of that time period. For example, his take on Bill Graham, was fascinating and a bit chilling to me. He also managed the Doors.

This book is interesting from another perspective. It provides a brutal insight into the nature of the music business. It has always been a system to steal from musicians as much as providing a venue for music.

Loren comes across as a real anomally. He seems likable and ethical. He only stayed in the business about 10 years. I would have been interested in learning a little more about him personally. However, he wrote this as a more of a memoir about the musicians than about himself. It is well written or maybe I should say well edited. It's well worth $15 plus about 2 hours to read.

Review of the Martino Fine Books edition: Be suspicious of this publisher

I don't know who "Martino Fine Books" are, Googling them seems to indicate a Used Book Store near Hartford, Conn. But with them now advertising a paperback edition of "Magick In Theory And Practice" that is going for $57.99, and a hardback edition for $199, I thought a direct reference to their product might prove instructional to the potential buyer. This is merely a facsimile of the original edition, which itself was Part Three of "Book 4", and originally published in paperback between 1929 and 1932, in four parts.

Instead of paying a very high price for an unknown publisher's highly priced edition, I'd highly recommend that any potential buyer seek out the Dover Paperback edition (very cheap) or the Castle Press hardback edition (relatively cheap)Magick: in Theory and Practice, or better yet-- get the lovely and durable hardback of Magick: Book 4, Liber Aba (Magick Bk. 4), as it has the complete text of "Magick In Theory And Practice" as well as the other three parts of "Book 4", and actually costs less (here on Amazon) than the paperback edition that Martino Fine Books is trying to shill here.

If any of you have purchased this edition, and can tell me what it has (if anything) that would command these prices, I would greatly appreciate your making mention of it in the comments section.

Excellent introduction to magickal practice

This book covers everything that a true practitioner must know when approaching magick. The first half of the book is highly informative, and helps you cover all the bases in creating the proper mood sets as well as enviroment for your work. The second half contains several of the most important magickal rituals of Thelema, the most important being the Star Ruby banishing. If you are interested in the Occult at all, or are a magick practioner, GET THIS BOOK. You will not regret it. I have two of Crowley's other books, and they're a bit difficult to digest, but this is very smooth reading. HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A Bludgeon instead of a Scalpel

Aleister Crowley's lecture notes on the subject of magic read exactly as it sounds like they would. Some people have said that the book is so difficult it reads like the Bible. I disagree... I think it reads like COMMENTARY on the Bible! Israel Regardie, Crowley's friend and secretary for many years, once said that he uses "language like a bludgeon where a scalpel would do..." No where is this more evident than in Magic in Theory and Practice.

But despite this, anyone interested in the subject absolutely MUST struggle through it. Crowley's knowledge of magic was unparalleled for his time and remains rarely challenged. This book was written earlier in his life, before years of drug-abuse and syphilis had a chance to ravage his obviously powerful mind. Though the discussion, as it were, ranges from typical magical ritual to the dark "drug-and-sex" magic he's famous for, this wide variety of explanation, theoretical musing and practical advice can't be beat.

That being said, it needs to be approached with a strong will. Crowley's path is tempting, especially for people who are interested in magic for its more Faustian aspects. People who want wealth, fame, sex and power will see the perfect opportunity in this book. After all, Uncle Al died famous and rich, right? Wrong. He died poor, desparate and alone, barely eeking a living by mooching off of his sycophantic followers. The path he chose has its price, and readers should remember that when they peruse these pages.

Okay, editorializing aside, this book has some gems of wisdom in it that really can't be found elsewhere if you have the patience to look. If you want to be a Magus, you need to read this book and take what you can from it. For followers of any path and on any level of study, this book will most likely provide some interesting ideas. Its not 5 stars, because its not 100% accessible by everyone, nor is it easy to read, but its definitely 4 stars with high marks. Hope you enjoy!

It's the noose for bad guys when the Hangman is on their trail

More menacing than the Batman of today, The Hangman returns for a second outing as a new attraction for MLJ Comics in his own book. This comic keeps up the quality of his "Special Comics" debut (a title that was used only once as issue #1). Harry Lucey once again supplies the artwork in three tales of how "crime doesn't pay." Artist Paul Reinman and writer Bill Willfolk add two marginally entertaining adventures of "The Boy Buddies" (Dusty the Detective and Roy the Super Boy). For some reason, MLJ seemed to have a policy of making their heroes' solo books live up to a much higher standard than that in their flagship title, "Pep Comics," which featured The Shield and The Hangman in decidedly less impressively drawn and written adventures. So "The Hangman Comics" it is -- and UP History and Hobby and Amazon have made the entire run of this title available! As usual with comics of this vintage, the color registration is off with the masks especially bleeding into the wrong spaces. But this can only be rectified by an expensive process of removing the color and then re-coloring the stories, which would double the cost of these books for collectors. I'm fine with them looking like the originals.

It is not your run of the mill political thriller and is more of a good mystery with some intrigue thrown in for good measure.  The plot moves along at a steady pace that will keep the reader's attention and desire to see what happens next. The dialogue is excellent without the use of excessive bad language or violence. I would recommend this to readers who like good mysteries along with a little political intrigue. A very good story. Best One Yet!!!

I've read all of Rick Robinson's novels and they just keep getting better. I love the characters, the storyline, and the political context woven throughout. It's easy to attach yourself to the characters and you find yourself flying through the pages. There are lots of words to describes Rick's novels - compelling, intriguing, and most of all - a fun read.

Another Great Masterpiece by Author Rick Robinson

As always author Rick Robinson combines his knowledge and experience of being a former Washington insider with a great story that is entertaining, interesting and educational. Read the book, and if you haven't read his other books, read those as well - you won't be disappointed.

Unfortunately, shortly after beginning this book I was interrupted. Then upon beginning again, I had to stop for a day for unforeseen circumstances. Finally, the third time was a charm, and I sat down, read the book and was "hooked". So satisfied when finished, I wanted to thank the author for writing it.
All four of Robinson's previous political fiction thrillers are good, and the Richard Thompson character is always compelling and interesting, however, I think this is the best yet. My advice is to carve out some time to sit down and read it in one setting. Sincerely! During my two interruptions of the text, I found myself anxious (even irritable) to finish the unscheduled task at hand so to get back to the "real" action in these pages!
The story is good, the writing is good, Rick Robinson has another winner!
