This is a great follow up to the author's original (auto)biography.

Continuing with some inexplicable happenstances, the author shares her "amazing" journey.

Her first book deals with the successful search for her identity. Only after finding the father she never knew, was she able to connect with her "being". She was embraced by his comrades and embraced them in return. Her incredible journey should have ended there, but it didn't. She writes about and embraces (as they do her) the members of that squadron as the deploy to Iraq to take their place amongst the honored.

She writes of the irony that connects the death of her father with the "current" members of the "Purple Foxes". She does so with compassion, respect and love.

I suppose that either of her books could be read alone. However, I would strongly recommend that one purchase and read her first book, "A Corpsman's Legacy", and then read (and enjoy), "A Corpsman's Legacy Continues" You will not be disappointed.

Excellent continuation to her first book. What an amazing story of personal dedication to a father she had come to know and love so long after his death.

Stephanie is a wonderful person and has become a very accomplished writer and fantastic researcher.

A very moving story about a life coming into focus. Many hardships were endured but none so insurmountable that it changed the original course. Very few people could have endured the crescendo of emotions as they unfold in the journey. It also excites me that the author now lives in my home state of Mississippi. I was in the infantry in 1970 and attached to an assault helicopter unit in II corps so I can identify with many of the events in the story.

About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lori Nelson has traveled the world as a special interests speaker aboard cruise ships. As an occupational varietist, Lori knows a lot of stuff about a lot of stuff. Her hilarious career history includes managing movie theaters, actress (Lori starred as a criminal in an episode of “America's Most Wanted”), casting director, voice-over specialist, bank teller, short order cook, and about 1000 other near misses to a mediocre existence. As a teenager, she especially enjoyed being a ride operator at the world's best amusement park, Kennywood! Lori also hosted her own show on broadcast radio, the eponymous “Lori Nelson Show”, and has taught continuing education courses at universities and school systems for more than twenty years. A pianist since age 7, Lori won several Carnegie-Mellon Music Awards, and earned a piano scholarship to West Virginia University. Later on, Lori ice skated competitively and volunteered as a coach with the Special Olympics. As an anthropomorphic observer of humanity, Lori is an etymologist (that's about words, not bugs), gemologist, anatomist, angelologist, and former optimist. She's happiest immersed in nature moments, amidst flora and fauna, whether horseback riding, at the seashore, on top of a glacier, or watching a butterfly – anywhere. Her passions include classical music, writing, and photography. Lori loves banana splits, yellow roses, and apparently … physical therapy. Torture is her first book.

From pothole to published author, Torture is an amazing and intimate journey... a journey of soul-searching and redemption. A journey possible only by the grace of an angel and one woman's indomitable spirit.

When Lori Nelson steps in a pothole on her street, virtually destroying her foot and shattering her soul, life as she knows it over. Or so she thinks. But, it seems, every time that inner voice says "I can't"... Lori discovers that she can. Souls and bones heal, but it takes time.

It isn't easy. It isn't pretty. It is long, slow torture. Telling herself every day, for days and weeks on end, that she can't, her own mind and body... guided by an angel named Graham... proves the lie to all those negative thoughts and feelings.

Torture is a frank... often brutal, often intimate... and transformative story. An experience that only a person with the keen insight of not just herself, but the human spirit, that Lori has could possibly tell. Interjected with equal doses of honesty, psychology and humour, Torture is a must-read for anyone who has ever doubted themselves in the face of adversity.

I had the broken foot....AND the shattered soul....this book hits home

Excellent book for the highly sensitive! I feel like I have just read my autobiography! I went through Achilles tendon rupture and had both knees replaced within the same time period. I still suffer with chronic pain and yet travel all over the world seeking distraction (including a dozen cruises!). I was in physical therapy for my hurting foot when I started reading this book. I told the P.T.'s they all should read it. Little did I know at the time how much more there is to it than the subject of physical therapy!
It's rare that I can identify with so many traits of an author-page after page. This book is deeper than the average reader can imagine. For those of us who do constant soul searching, it's a relief to find out that we are not alone. Thanks to this book, I'm now researching the term "empath:. I have always been treated as if hypersensitivity and excessive compassion was a curse. Now, I count myself as an "angel-in-preparation".

Fabulous! Lori Nelson took a short part of her journey of meeting an Angel and opened her heart and mind to share with others. From her childhood of pain, and abuse from a mother that was unable to give what she didn't have herself, to the day she broke her foot that set her on a path of Enlightenment. She didn't know it then but her life was going to change.

She was given the Light and Love energy from the Universe through an Angel that is a physical therapist. People that have a need for healing whether it be mind or body can receive this gift when you least expect it. Angels come in many shapes and sizes. Her first meeting with her Angel opened her conciseness. There was no turning back. The Universe has great plans for Lori's writing abilities. Her command of words draws you into her story with descriptions of emotions that pain can bring to us. Great read to the very last page. Looking forward to her growth as a writer.

You're never too old to change or to learn. Joanne Nussbaum's Mongolia Monologues is a perfect illustration of this truth. Joining the Peace Corps at the age of 53 presented some challenges to Joanne that might not befall someone much younger, but the lessons learned from them were no less effective. Challenges with hygiene conditions and her own natural clumsiness presented some irritations to overcome, but none was more difficult than attempting to eat the traditional food, mutton, which she ultimately refused after several attempts. There were challenges with relationships, but also the creation of some lasting bonds. All in all, Joanne grew, adapted and learned what things are most important in a person's life; proving that you actually can teach an old dog new tricks.

Many who have never experienced life outside of the U.S. or major European countries don't often understand that other people in the world have the challenge of simply surviving. Mongolia Monologues and Joanne Nussbaum help to address this particular ignorance and at the same time do so in a humorous fashion. Joanne is not judgmental about the more well-to-do countries, but does help provide us with a great deal of the wisdom that can be gained by seeing how the other half lives, so to speak. Peace Corps for the brave

Joanne believes she is old at 53 when she joins Peace Corps, yet we read of a young at heart mom going clear across the world to make a change in her life. Mongolia is world's away, from language to diets, weather, and that the local women rarely use toilet paper. As she said, "cultural differences can be freaking unbelievable! "
But she joined Peace Corps to make a difference in who she was, and in the hope of sharing herself with her new community. That's what Peace Corps is all about. Volunteers feel they have gotten more from the two experiece than the community. Yet the community feels they received more from the Volunteers. Though 50 plus years have passed, President Kennedy ' s legacy lives on. And Joanne ' s community and National Counterparts I bet feel the same...she left memories behind. She had a few accidents her first year which are good material for memories and work for Peace Corps doctor.But her students found a friend in Joanne, a home away from home. She feels she is the same person, but different too!
I strongly recommend this book for Joanne ' s honesty and beautiful use of photos. If you are considering Peace Corps or have a relative or friend as possible candidates, this book is a must. Or for those of us that served, her book brings back memories and few laughs! Thanks Joanne, and as they say in that difficult language of Mongolia...Shin Jil, Happy New Year! And how many out there have ever milked a Yak?

Honest and entertaining read

An honest and thoughtful reflection of a Peace Corps service from the perspective of a “fiesty, fifty-something PCV”. Her monologues, presented through four separate stages of trials, tribulations, triumphs, and truths, reveal the great extent in which her experience in Mongolia impacted her own life and perspectives (PC Goal #3, I believe). And hopefully as a result of her own time, care, and commitment dedicated during her service, she was also able to achieve PC Goal #2, by positively impacting the lives of the children and colleagues with whom she worked.
I found the organization of the monologues slightly unconventional, as her stories were not told in the usual chronological order. However, it was an interesting method, and I'm guessing that's how it all made sense in the author's mind. I was pleased to find it end on a positive note for both the author and the community, despite the extensive personal and professional challenges described.
It was an amusing and relatively quick read, which I enjoyed and hope will inspire me to follow through with some of my own collections of drafted compositions.

Like Letters from a Dear Friend on an Adventure

I enjoy first-person accounts of US citizens living in Asia, since this is something I did years ago. That this account was about living in Mongolia, a place so remote that its name is a simile for the middle of nowhere, grabbed my attention. Once I started reading this book I couldn’t stop. Finished it in one sitting. I felt like I was reading letters from a dear friend on an adventure. Laughed out loud in one part, at her description of her clumsiness with tools.

At first I was skeptical about her value as a Peace Corps volunteer when she couldn’t speak the language and everyone over there she encountered seemed to have to rush to her aid. However by the end of the book I came to appreciate that she did make valuable contributions to the lives of the children she worked with, and her bonds with her Mongolian peers were also helpful in making our world a friendlier place. I think it was fortunate that the organization allowed her the freedom to come up the concepts for her engagement based on what she thought she could do best. Overall, an enjoyable read.

This was an amazing book that I would recommend to everyone

It didn't take long for the action to start happening. From chapter one this book took me on a crazy journey, it excited me, frustrated me and kept me on the edge of my seat. This was an amazing book that I would recommend to everyone.

Frankie O'Neil has no idea her brother is in up to his eyeballs in a very bad business. But when the two of them take a weekend trip to their cabin in northern New Mexico, she certainly finds out. Her brother's murder is shocking enough, but dealing with doubting police, intruders and even arson back home is enough to revive the voices in her head that she thought were finally gone. Sometimes when it seems like a conspiracy, it might actually be one.

I think what frustrated me the most was how guilty she looked and how guilty she made herself look. Like when she was describing the rifle that shot her brother. It was obvious that the police didn't believe her but she just kept talking. At first I thought Frankie was crazy with all the voices in her head and her constant counting of cans - weird. But once I found out why I was thrilled, it was the little paranormal element that I needed in this book.

I liked how I also got the point of views from the killers, I always love that. It helps me to put all the pieces together and usually leaves me with less questions. Bellamy was an evil money hungry man that deserved what he got. Larry was the craziest one of them all though, he ate a whole bowl of crazy flakes for breakfast!

Nick was adorable! He was so protective of Frankie once he realized she was in trouble. I was so glad he didn't think she was cutting people up and stuffing them in her freezer.

I will definitely read more of Olive Balla's works, she is obviously very talented.

Two of the outstanding qualities of this book are the effective vocabulary choices and the great word pictures. Absolutely not a standard storyline rerun, it is captivating and highly suspenseful. I started reading it one afternoon and couldn't put it down. I finished it at 2:00 A.M. the next morning.

I highly recommend this book

Compelling from the first page. Olive Balla's first novel is a hit! I lost sleep over this one, folks. Frankie has lost so much in her life and now she sees her brother killed. It's no wonder she's afraid she's losing it. I would be, too. To top it off people are trying to kill her and she doesn't even know why. I highly recommend this book. It will keep you guessing. And the bad guy is pure evil.

This was not intended to be an elaborately illustrated book of Japanese sword masterpieces or museum collections, but more of an easy reference to the methods, materials and tools of Tsukamaki, and a practical starting point for anyone interested in Japanese sword handle repair. 

The book has a brief history of significant changes in Japanese sword design; a guide to setting up a Tsukamaki workshop; and, easy-to-follow illustrations for twenty-five of the more common styles of sword handle design. I also included three case studies on the disassembly, maintenance, repair and/or rebuilding of sword handles, as well as a visual glossary for the identification and understanding of such things as general Japanese sword parts, temper patterns, blade design, terms and definitions, and signature characters.

About the Author
Dr. Thomas Buck has been collecting and studying the Japanese Art Sword for over thirty years, acquiring his first Samurai Sword in October, 1975. In 1987, with the guidance of Dr. W. Y. Takahashi, Sensei, he began a three year intensive study/apprenticeship of the restoration and preservation techniques of John Grimmitt and Takahiro Ichinose, concentrating his research on Tsukamaki and Japanese Lacquer-ware. Since 1988, he has been performing restoration and research work on tsuka for various institutions, private collectors, and dealers.

More than the title implies

Traditional Japanese swordmaking stands among the most refined and complex of arts. In fact, it combines a number of different arts, including that of wrapping the hilt (the "tsuka"). This book covers that craft in enough detail for the determined artisan to put those techniques to use - not necessarily in such warlike manner. The reader finds more than two dozen variations, with surprising details like the use of paper shims to compensate for the thickness of layered bands. There's also a "tear-down" of an antique tsuka being restored by conservators - something very few artisans would be priveleged to see. I fault this part of the book only for lack of clarity in the knotwork that ties off the ends of the wrapping material

More than that, though, Buck gives brief but dense history of the swords themselves, describing how the blades' shape, length, construction, and metallurgy evolved over time. He details different patterns that remain from tempering the edge, and that appear in striations on the tang. Additional details cover signature markings, shape of tsuka, and some of the ornaments on hilt and guard. The author describes tsukamaki itself in a usable level of detail, but brings a lot more to the interested reader, too.

Worth 2x the cost!

Mr. Buck starts with the history of the Nihonto, then moves to many different styles (with great illustrations and explainations) of how to successfully learn Tsukamaki. I wish I'd have had this book a year ago - it would have saved me hours of learning the hard way!

Excellent practical resource for beginners

This book is well organized, quick, and easy. At least, as easy as embracing a new language CAN be. I am learning Hebrew using a variety of sources (Rosetta Stone, flash cards, online tutorials, TV, and my native-Israeli partner), and bought this book as another arrow in my multi-faceted quiver. I will say I've been impressed. Most of this was not new to me, but I believe the way it's presented is extremely useful. It doesn't necessarily seem logical at first glance, and I probably would have been frustrated had I not seen such a variety of approaches in teaching/learning a new language. Having gone through so many learning methods, I do believe this is a reasonable and logical approach.

What this book will teach you:
It will teach you basic sentence structuring, common vocabulary, and give you the building blocks for speaking the language on your own. You will get a series of vocabulary words to learn, then a series of sample sentences using those words. The idea is that once you understand how to structure a sentence, and have some vocabulary at your fingertips, you can begin constructing your own sentences rather easily.

What this book will not teach you:
How to read/write Hebrew or how to conjugate all verbs (ha! good luck with that!).

My only real criticism is that there are some typos, and the transliterations are a bit inconsistent. e.g.
- "ani omeretet" should be "ani omeret" (loc 331 on Kindle version)
- "bein" as a transliteration would make someone say the English "bain" (which is also used as a transliteration), but the word is pronounced "ben"
- a lot of transliterations are spelled differently (sometimes even on the same page), like "mechonit"/"mechoniit" (loc 292)

But these are small problems. I just figured I would point them out, because I have found myself very frustrated in the past trying to figure out a sentence only to have my partner read it and say, "Oh, you're confused because there's a typo" and wind up banging my head on the table, then trying to figure out how to say "Bandaid, please!" in Hebrew.

Good method to learn hebrew

When I traveled to Israel for the first time I purchased this book, at the visitor center at the Ben Gurion airport. This book is an easy way for you to get around the country with the basic hebrew it provides, even though most Israelis speak english, I still wanted to practice my hebrew and they all understood me and were amazed. I familarizrd myself with the words in this book. You won't regret purchasing this book and it is travel size as well.

but I am glad this method is in English script

For many years I struggled with learning how to read Hebrew, but I am glad this method is in English script, rather than Hebrew script, which makes it much easier for me to learn. This method is excellent in regards to teaching conversational skills in Hebrew, which is great for me, since I am new to Judaism.
