About the Author
Richard Van Anderson is a former heart surgeon turned fiction writer. His surgery training took him from the “knife and gun club” of LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, to the famed Bellevue Hospital in Midtown Manhattan. You'll be doing yourself at great disservice if you do

MY REVIEW:
Oh-my-word!!!! This was THE most suspenseful, sit at the edge of your seat, harrowing, eye popping read I've had in a long while. The action just never stopped in this novel from the very first page until the very last. I don't remember a book ever holding my attention as much as this one did. My mind kept telling my eyes to read faster and faster, I just couldn't get through it quick enough to know what was coming next. The writing is unbelievable, Richard Van Anderson has given an outstanding performance in The Organ Takers.
The ending was so abrupt that it tells me there is definitely a sequel in the works and I sincerely hope it's not too long before that is forthcoming. I just have to know what happens to David McBride and the others involved in aiding him.
Please, DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!! You'll be doing yourself at great disservice if you do. You won't be able to put this down for a second to even make a cup of tea. Totally enthralling and eye glueing!! I will be highly recommending this one to everyone and anyone who will listen.

Fabulous Read!!!

This is an amazing book! It's so suspenseful from beginning to end. I could not put it down. I loved all of the medical jargon and hierarchy of staff, doctors, detectives and street folk. It was so believable and easy to put yourself into the situations of each of the characters. Many of the outcomes were unpredictable and surprising. This can be hard to do for people who read a lot. There were many unexpected turns and I just LOVED IT!!! I can't wait for the sequel......there has to be one right?? Please!!!
It's very on the edge of your seat like The Firm but with a medical plot! Great read! Thank you Dr. Van Anderson, thank you, thank you!!!

A good book one in a new medical thriller trilogy. Good first novel. Exciting, fast-paced, and scary idea.

First things first, this is book one of a trilogy. Even though there are quite a few loose ends, you don’t feel like everything has been left unresolved when you get to the end of the book. I like some sort of closure in a first book of a series. If I don’t get that, I just am kind of put off. The Organ Takers was interesting enough that I will read the next volume when it becomes available.

Dr. Anderson is a former heart surgeon and it shows in this novel. The surgical procedures are extremely detailed. He probably goes a bit overboard on the minutia, but that is his background, so I’m sure that it is accurate, and that is what feels right to him. Most readers will be skimming though some of it. He does a good job with his first novel.

The main plot-line of the novel is realistic and believable. The basic idea, that there is a black market for stolen organs is a scary proposition, but rings true. Some of the sub-plots and character’s thought processes are a little far-fetched, but not inconceivable. The action drives the story and keeps you reading. You will finish The Organ Takers very quickly, because it is easy to get into and the prose is quite straight forward, and you won’t want to stop reading it. Characterization was a little shallow, but that is what you expect in an action driven thriller.

All in all, The Organ Takers was an exciting, and engaging book one of a trilogy. The author draws you into the story, and when you finish it, you will be anticipating book two. I enjoyed it, but wish that I had known going in that The Organ Takers was the first book in a trilogy. It doesn’t say that anywhere on the book, or on the Amazon page, except in the reviews. I think that the publisher needs to correct that. Some people don’t want to read a trilogy, and they should know up front what they are getting into.

Ignoring the trilogy issue, I thought that The Organ Takers was a good debut novel, and will try to read the next book. I give it 4 Stars out of 5, and recommend it to fans of Robin Cook, especially since there doesn’t seem to be many good medical thrillers out there lately.

This was a book I loved to read but found hard to enjoy

Buck is a little more thoughtful in this episode. This may reflect that his world is not as charmed as he thought. As usual, well written and full of intricate plot twists and turns. A darker Buck encountering the darker and more lonely life of politics. Buck discovers that people are not always what they seem to be and that they can challenge his talented and lively mind. His psyche gets roughed up here, along with his understanding of personal integrity. Buck manages to keep his sense of self - along with his impeccable fashion sense. This was a book I loved to read but found hard to enjoy. Which says something about me and not about the book. Well worth the extra time it took me --- although I am looking forward to more of the adventurous 'devil' romping through another episode. So the lack of a 'star' may say more about me than the author's talent!

Here comes Buck 98. Get ready!

4.25 actually. Just like in the first book, the story opens to Buck in the middle of a major crisis. This one was definitely twisted, and a bit humorous, and after reading the comedy of errors later on in the story, it puts a bit of a different light on Buck’s responses in emergency situations, and how he might interact with children. And guess what, his next case deals with a child. I can actually find myself liking this guy, even if he’s as obnoxious as anyone I’ve ever met!

Overall my impression of this story was good, and it was written in a refreshingly somewhat snarky and humorous style, where it was fairly hard for me to take the main character seriously. I think I was expecting a bit more serious and debonair ‘Gay 007′ character, but the actuality does not take away from the enjoyment of reading about Buck and his adventures.

Buck 98, above all else, is an opportunist, not exactly suave or debonair like I think of the ‘straight’ James Bond. Who actually wears turquoise pants with an orange shirt? There are many lovely quips about fashion and Broadway and various other gay ‘stereo-types’ that make this story very tongue-in-cheek, but that doesn’t take away from the underlying mystery that is to be solved in this caper.

All sex is off page but there is plenty of teasing, innuendo, and double entrende used throughout.

For the cast of characters in this book we are introduced to Phynilla, the African-American woman who is the right hand ‘man’ for the first openly gay Southern governor, Miguel Reyes. Oh. And she also happens to be a pastor at the church run by the zealots against Referendum 65.

Next we meet ‘The Countess’ Margareta, who stands guard with a rifle and her dogs Jenny, Earle, and Marquise. To add to this, she actually puts them in costumes, and the noisy pups act as an alarm system. Buck receives an outstanding welcome from this crew to his new assignment at the Mayor’s homestead.

We are teased with discussion about, but not actually seeing, the character of Mrs. Truque, the missing ‘tutor’ for Alejandro. She just so happens to be a 6-ft tall blond woman, and the references to her tend to tease something in the back of your mind each time she is mentioned. Why isn’t she the obvious choice as the kidnapper, since she seems to be missing along with the boy?

As in the previous story, we get to see Muffin (Agent 69), Buck’s superior officer, who is always quick with the comebacks. He is very droll, able to make jokes without cracking a smile.. I get the impression he actually has affection for Buck.

Where, might we ask, is Noxia (Agent 46) this go round? Especially since, in the first adventure, we received the impression she and Buck tended to get paired up quite often. Hmmmm.

Well, you’ll just have to get your hands on this book and find out for yourself. It was a very enjoyable, and to me, light-hearted read, with a bit of mystery, unforeseen catastrophes, creative use of a straw and nails, and some unexpected reveals. Oh, and this one does have a little bit more romance than the first in the series *only a smidge though*.

Another triumph for Eric Andrews-Katz!! Balls & Chain is the second in the Agent Buck 98 series and is every bit as good (or perhaps even better) as the first. I found myself reading late into the night just to see what Buck was going to do next! I was a bit upset that Noxia was not part of the book but, to my surprise....I can't tell you. You will just have to read the book!! Can't wait for the next one!!

An excellent resource for contemplative prayer

While I wasn't overly impressed by Bourgealt's "Mystical Hope", her true potential as Episcopalian minister/guru emerges in "The Wisdom Jesus" which to my mind is the single best work on the practice of lecto divinia and contemplative prayer since Thomas Keating (that "great patriarch", as she calls him) first introduced it to the majority of Catholics in the United States.

The majority of the book is spent on Bourgealt's the very vital theme--for people of any denomination or faith--of "kenosis", an ancient Greek word meaning "self-emptying" but commonly used in Christian theology as the definition of what Christ did when he was on earth. By virtue of his love for others he emptied himself more and more, became increasingly more humble until he was at the bottom of the social, economic and cultural level--and then rose up as infinity of this emptiness. In Philippians 2:7 it is written that: "Jesus made himself as nothing." Bourgealt stresses that even simple and very necessary virtues like humility, love for neighbor, etc will not place us in this state unless we prayerfully ask for it to happen. She is always aware that this will be an uncommon desire for anyone, particularly the comfortable people of faith who are content with what she calls "dogma, a fabricated religious identity, or sectarian complacency."

The last chapters of the book are devoted to furthering the practice of Sacred Scripture reading in our daily lives and the tradition of centering prayer which she demystifies in a fashion I have not yet seen matched. The complications of daily meditation in our busy lives and the simple lack of motivation that even the most outwardly devout Christian has to the practice are given gentle but serious treatment. Recommend for all people of faith!

Cynthia Bourgeault is a hidden treasure. When I first read her, I encountered, for the first time, the Jesus and the Christianity I had always looked for and longed for. This was confirmed to me yet again with the publishing of the her new book, "The Wisdom Jesus."

With the publication of this book, I was moved to do something I never do: give a religious book to a Catholic priest. And the results have been stunning. The priest was blown away by Bourgeault's synthesis of Jesus and his time on earth. He found new angles on both the Eucharist and the Beatitudes. He can't stop thinking about the book and was moved to give it to another priest. This priest read it and said, "Who is this woman, and why have we never heard of her?" He, too, felt changed by the beauty of Bourgeault's work and promptly bought all her books. He passed it on to another priest, and the story continues.

Cynthia Bourgeault needs to be read by everyone trying to make sense of a Christianity that has been tainted over the centuries. She returns us home. Her wisdon gives me great hope for my faith and my world.

If you are searching

With this quote from the Gospel of Thomas, Cynthia Bourgeault begins the Wisdom Jesus and then provides a path for those who seek knowledge of The Way beyond what the western church has promoted. You may find that what seems "new" is an affirmation of what you already knew in your heart, as holes within the traditional picture are filled in through interpretation and explanation that allow for a deeper, richer understanding of who Jesus is and what his call is for each of us.

Bourgeault's words are an artform, and a delight to read; what could be dense and unfamiliar terminology and theology is translated into a language all can understand. For those with "eyes to see and ears to hear", this book is much more... truly it is manna from heaven! Taste, eat and be filled...

About the Author

Joshua Fishman is a third-generation diamantaire whose grandfather, Abraham, and father, David, started A. Fishman & Son in New York City in 1947. Both Abraham and David originally came from Cracow, having left Poland before the beginning of WWII. With degrees from Lehigh University and Harvard Law School, Joshua practiced corporate law from 1976 through 1982 before joining his father in the family diamond business.

Happily married for forty-one years, the author has three accomplished children, Renee, Adam, and Jessica, as well as four adorable grandchildren, Oliver, Chase, Charlotte, and Sabrina.

A Must Read Before Making a Big Purchase

Fantastic book! Josh Fishman is a true diamond expert, and really covers everything that you need to know in this very easy-to-follow book. There are a lot of myths about diamonds, and Mr. Fishman really clears them up. I particularly like his approach on how to choose a balanced diamond that blends the best of all attributes. A must read before you make a really big purchase!

What a wonderful book for anyone who is planning to purchase a diamond! It's easy to read, incredibly thorough, and contains a lot of important information to help a purchaser not only buy a beautiful diamond but make a good investment as well. Mr. Fishman obviously loves what he does, and he speaks in a very knowledgeable, authentic and caring voice. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I have spent hour upon hour visiting multiple web sites as well as hours viewing diamonds with local jewlelers. Only when I purchased and read Josh Fishman's book did I really begin getting the education I needed before I could intelligently start shopping for a diamond. Finding the right diamond at a competitive price is more complicated than I ever imagined. If you are looking for a "pretty" diamond and you have not read this book I do not think you will be very successful. I'm looking for a diamond for our 40th Wedding Anniversary so it's important that I find the right diamond for my wife. After reading Beyond The Four C's I'm comfortable discussing diamonds with any jeweler. I plan on taking it to the next level and will be visiting A.Fishman & Sons in NYC this Spring to purchase a diamond from Josh. Even though I now feel educated on the scientific aspects of diamonds I know that no amount of education can replace having a third-generation diamantaire work with me to find the right diamond.

Riveting, this graphic novel was full of intense emotions that were at times painful and dark. It really isn’t a happily ever after however its rawness parallel reality where everyone has a secret the good and the bad guys gets blurred with intentions. Joanne and Terry seem doomed on all sides from Terry’s huge secret to Joanne’s father revenge rage. All we can do is look out for Bridgeland 2 to see how this saga unfolds. The high quality illustrations captured the story perfectly - thumbs up to Marc and Tristan and their support team.

Although Sam is determined to solve the mystery, he may be facing something more sinister than he originally believed-and finding the answer may be the last thing he ever does.

Enjoyed the interpay of the characters very much

I just finished this book and enjoyed it very much. The personality of the characters is very distinct. The humor and individual styles of the characters make the reading of this book smooth and you find yourself emotionally involved with Sam- the main character. During Sam’s investigation into the El Padre phenomenon, there are visits to many parts of the world. The detail and distinctiveness of the different cultures, the region and people are brought out in vivid detail. I found that aspect alone something refreshing and above the norm in the books I have been reading. There is also a historical counter point that slowly reveals itself throughout the book and is brought to the forefront at the books conclusion which I did not see coming (but I won’t give away any spoilers)!

When I finished the book I felt sense of loss, like I’d just lost touch with a small group of friends. I really enjoyed the characters and hope they continue in the next book (should there be one- and I hope there is).

Is he good or evil

In this impressive and gripping debut mystery, David Houser has created a remarkable tale featuring Sam Noll, a sometimes overly-confident journalist, and El Padre, a mysterious figure who appears with increasing presence along the course of the novel. When Noll finally sees a pattern in the appearances, the novel really takes off leading the reader through fascinating and convincing visits to Norway, Vietnam, and Burma. Moving back and forth through time and location, the story line creates a cluster of persistent questions: who is the mysterious character? How does he travel in time? Is he good or evil? How will Sam track him down? Houser’s narration is an exercise in economical prose, bringing to life two main characters Sam, and his girlfriend Katie. The author is at his best, however, in his cameo portrayals of side characters such as Becklin, the ex-CIA operative, the aging Professor Efram, now confined to in a nursing home, and Lilly, the Burmese revolutionary. The dénoument comes quickly and leads the reader to consider matters much broader than the actual plot itself. I highly recommend “The Sacrament.”

Well-written!

I like Houser’s writing style and enjoyed the book very much. At one point, one of the main characters dies and I was both surprised (because I didn’t see it coming) and saddened because I liked the character so much. The descriptions of locations in Peru and Burma were well written and the confliction Sam had between his social life and trying to find the solution to the mystery of “El Padre” made a connection with me. It was suspenseful with a touch of humor.

Be prepared for a story with everything

I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see what cunning adventure was going to happen next. I had tears from laughter, anxious nerves waiting to see if everyone was going to be ok. Sadness with the heartaches and an overwhelming admiration for Jane. Thank goodness your son was such a nag otherwise we the readers would be denied a truly talented author. Congratulations on your first book... can't wait for the next book. It was a pleasure meeting you at the Howard, Wisconsin book signing. Best wishes.

A real page turner

I waited for four years to finally see this in print. I often wondered how it was coming along after Judy and I talked about her project. I am the daughter of the Makies who lived at the intersection of M-73 and Stanley Lake Road and a cousin to the Gehlhoffs who lived just over the big hill and on the lake.

I love all of the great, practical and inexpensive, organizational tips that she has offered. She has so many wonderful ideas for keeping track of all the things on a Christmas to do list. At Last, An eBook that Gives What it Promised!

Lots of books of this sort promise more than they deliver; this book is different. Sandi Lane offers detailed directions for the recipes she includes in this eBook.

The author explains the difference between different grades of hydrogen peroxide. Then she provides a variety of recipes with directions and cautions. She explains which grade of hydrogen peroxide is needed.

We use 3 percent all the time for pet and personal wounds and scratches. However, I was not aware of using this relatively-cheap product for cancer treatment. Lane also provides recipes for cleaning veggies, meats, seafood, etc.

There are also recipes/directions for: teeth maintenance, gingivitis, ear wax buildup, bad breath and fungal infections. I wish the author had given some indication where to buy the food grade hydrogen peroxide. I was very impressed and pleased with this book. The author gave what she promised.

like instructions,benefits..i put a couple of drops in my water,tonic water i drink everyday..i was diagnosed with kidney failure..since using i feal healthier,calm.. i've always as a mouthwash used 1/3 dr titchner.1/3 peroxicide and 1/3 water to gaurgale.rinse mouth out after brushing teath at least 50 yrs... 1 bottle each inside portion 1 big bottle dr tichner last 1 yr..becomed cloudy when mixed..great so as not to mixup with others...
