About the Author
Robert Woollcombe was born in 1922 and educated at Marlborough College. He enlisted in the 60th Rifles in 1941, and was commissioned into the 6th Battalion, the King's Own Scottish Borderers in 1942, with whom he served in north-west Europe. He served with the 2nd KOSB in India from 1945 to '46. His association with the regiment spanned three generations - his uncle was killed in action with the KOSB in France in 1914, and his grandfather was Colonel of the regiment.

Absorbing account of front line battle

Woollcombe served with 6th Battalion KOSB, of the 52nd Lowland Division from Normandy until VE-Day. He started as a platoon commander but as casualties took their toll he also commanded the company at times too. It is an exceedingly literate look at the intense warfare that took place in this campaign.

The author was fortunate to be with his unit for a considerable time before Normandy. He knew them and they knew him. This included the other officers and his commanders, who he idolised. The training and partying that took place served them well in making them an effective and cohesive fighting formation. This was necessary as they arrived in France on D+8 and went into battle against the five SS Panzer divisions deployed against the British.

After a few days being worked into the line, Woollcombe is in the hedges and corn fields that of the front. They are warned by the Canadians they relieved, that the SS shot the wounded. He’s sees dead bodies for the first time and indeed, one of his first jobs is overseeing burials. He is astonished at the sights: pale faces, waxy skin, scattered personal effects. They face concerted attacks that are only broken by intense artillery fire. They also conduct attacks and Woollcombe writes of meeting the teenage SS boys. There are many casualties and Woollcombe writes, so “This was the war. Vicious. Bestial. Insensate.”

Following Normandy, the division advances through France and into Holland. Again, there is tenacious resistance from the Germans, this time including Fallschirmjagers, who were very skillful. As with his Normandy section, there is strong detail on the battles but also observations on the Americans and civilians. There are some jarring moments and very close calls. At the end, he is one of only a handful of men left who had landed with the battalion. Even these though have suffered painfully from the strain.

The standout feature to me was the power of the writing. Woollcombe is a very literate writer and conveys his story in vivid ways. His style is almost impersonal though, he doesn’t so much describe his own actions but more the experience. He even slips into second person at times. Yet, the effect is absorbing. I felt it was one of those rare books that really did drag you in. It is almost poetic too. This book was first published in 1955 and it really deserved a re-issue. (He also wrote a history of his regiment) The power of the author’s prose and vivid perspective of front line combat makes this book a must read. Highly recommended. 4 ¼ stars.

This thoroughly entertaining and impossible-to-put-down crime story hits all the right notes. Set in Boston, a classic melting pot of culture and ideas, amidst the values, questions, lifestyle, and colorful characters of a particular generation, the plot unfolds through the issues of cops, workers, unions, organized crime, politics, dissidents, race, friends and lovers. Characters come vividly to life through spot-on dialogue and I want to hear more from this author who seems to know them so well.

Buy this book! This, I Command!

The 'G.I. Joe Field Manual' is an absolute joy. It is a behind-the-scenes visual delight of Season 1 (and the pre-Season 1 mini-series) of the 80's G.I. Joe cartoon by Sunbow, and a wish come true for G.I. Joe collectors (especially 'Joe cartoon fans), or even fans of cartoon "bibles" in general.

This book 208 pages long, and is packed full of thousands of drawings, sketches, notes, descriptions, and even a few excellent highly detailed background concept designs. Sadly it's all black and white, but probably most of it was anyway, so it's not a big deal.

Of course most of the 'Joes and Cobras on screen are shown, but where this book really shines, is, it also features art and notes of most of the guest stars, civilians, and the like. Wanna know about trucker Honda Lou? She's there. Want to know about Mara "the mermaid"? She's there too. How about Destro's creepy therianthropic clan mates who wore animal masks and wanted to sacrifice Lady Jaye? Goctha, covered. There's even a section on the Synthoids! Most guest stars are shown, but not all. And unfortunately one character design we didn't see, was the concept art of 'Snake Eyes in drag' from the "Pyramid of Darkness" mini-series. Yes, yes, I know that's a heartbreaking omission for many of you, but the rest of the book more than makes up for that one, singular, serious lapse of quality control! ;) :P

What's also refreshing, is, in addition to getting the basic stats on many of the common 'Joe and Cobra vehicles, we also get the names and stats of many of the in-show only vehicles that never made it to toy form and whose names weren't mentioned publically until now---like the Cobra fighter jets in the first mini-series, or the giant Cobra snake-head cargo plane in the second one. That's a big deal, because now we know. And knowing is half the battle. (Or so they say.) The only thing I'm a little sketchy on, is, the authenticity of some of the file names and specialties with a few non-core characters. Are all the notations and character profile descriptions taken from the from the 80's bible, or did the authors take the liberty to add a few things in here or there that weren't fleshed out in the original pieces? Regardless, it's a very minimal issue, only dealing with a handful of characters.

There is very little to complain about, if anything. Truly, it's that good. But if I had to pick a token gripe, it would be the lack of more notations and descriptions outside the characters and vehicles. This book is primarily a visual field guide. And it does that exceedingly well, as all the basic information is there. But on the interior front and rear covers are actual typed and handwritten notes that Hasbro and Sunbow used to flesh out the show, emphasize what could or could not be done, and so forth. These notes are fascinating, and I really wish we had much more of those. Hopefully in the Season 2 book... But as I said, this is a visual book, and in that capacity, it's near perfect.

There are very few things I rate 5 stars, but this book is one of them. Granted it's aimed for a niche audience and draws heavily on nostalgia, but if you are/were a part of that audience, or even newly exploring or re-exploring it, this is an absolute must buy. Because if you don't, you're a stinking commie listening to too much Cold Slither on your cassette boom-box, or you have a red uniform hanging in your closet!

Where Was This Wonderful Book When I Was A Kid?

User C. Chung's review is spot on - so I'd recommend anyone wondering about this book to read that review. I'll add that this works very well as a "how to draw G.I. Joe" book - and if I'd had it in the mid-eighties I probably would never have left my little drawing table! What a pleasure, and the more off-beat models like the Dreadnoks as Cold Slither are a special treat. Yoooooo Joe!

If you loved G.I Joe as a kid then this is the book for you. It has some great art work and brings me back to when I was an addicted G.I. Joe show watching kid. The books could include more but their really not that expensive for what you get and a great buy!

About the Author
Trevor R. Jefferson relocated to Tonga in January of 2005 during the reign of the beloved King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. He resided in Tonga during the infamous 2006 Nuku'alofa riots and horrific 2009 MV Princess Ashika ferry sinking, survived various hurricanes and watched as the world mourned the death of Tupou IV.

Trevor lived with his wife and children in both the Tongatapu and Vava’u island groups, the latter being where two of his children were born at home and without the aid of a doctor or even a midwife. He and his family experienced living in island paradise without running water but with a million-dollar ocean view.

Trevor and his family left Tonga in June 2010 during the reign of King Siaosi Taufa'ahau Manumataongo Tuku'aho Tupou V (aka George Tupou V). He experienced firsthand the Inquisition-esque witch-hunt that was the Royal Land Commission, threats of physical violence from jealous competing realtors and government corruption at its finest … while at the same time, experiencing and receiving the bounty that came from creating – and later selling – perhaps the most successful real estate business in the country’s history.

Simply put, there are very few individuals on the planet that have lived a life half as interesting as Trevor Jefferson, period.

Strange Little Book

I don't regret buying it; really I don't. But what a strange little book. I actually enjoyed reading parts of it, but more for its quirkiness than for its informational value. The book is a fascinating mishmash of genres: religious narrative, post-colonial imperialism, travel guide, history, autobiography, and mansplaining. The author definitely can "talk story," but it is also clear that he never did realize how much he must have tested the hospitality and good manners of those among whom he lived. It sounds as if they were more than generous and patient with his trying ways.

The descriptions of specific places were sometimes lovely and might be useful for a visitor. And it was fun for me to see the relative cost-of-living break downs, though that information is likely in flux all the time.

The author's characterizations of Tongans as peculiar, simple, ignorant, silly, and goofy - all words he uses - are more than a bit off putting. He dismisses anyone who does not agree with his business practices as stupid.

The book is replete with typos, changes in font sizes, proofreading fossils, and varying layout.

While not by any stretch literature, this book is an odd cultural artifact and might interest those widely read in Pacific literature, in part as a demonstration of the white traveler obliviously imposing his privilege on Tonga - and outraged when he is not allowed that imposition.

I picked this book up as a free Kindle read and it was great! It's like a mix between a Lonely Planet Guidebook, a How-to-Relocate Manual and a funny personal memoir!

The same author also co-wrote another similar book about the country of Grenada and I read that one too ... it was also good but not as interesting, funny or personal as this one was.

If you dream of escaping the rat race, retiring to an interesting country and want to know how to do so, as well as what sort of crazy experiences might await you ... I would highly recommend reading this book!

Turquoise Waters, White Sandy Beaches and a Laid-Back Lifestyle. What's Not to Love?

Very good, to-the-point and easy read about moving to the South Pacific's Kingdom of Tonga. I like the author's clear and concise organization of the material. Information presented seems to be current and very much in line with other sources, but with the added zest of the author's own experiences living in Tonga from 2005 to 2010. This latter benefit is worth the cost of the book many times over.

I fault the book for multiple grammatical and typographical errors that should have been corrected during editing. Tonga's Constitution is appropriately quoted throughout the book. In all but a handful of places, though, the date of the constitution is given as 1975, not the correct year of 1875. Simple mistakes such as this often make me wonder what else may be incorrect.

In another minor error, King George Topou II is noted as having been the grandson of King George Topou I, while later the correct relationship is given as great-grandson. I do hope that these and other mistakes (including some incorrect use of compound direct-object pronouns, such as "to her and I" when "to her and me" should have been used) will be corrected and uploaded soon.

The author is also too strident in grinding his axe against allegations of wrongdoing by real estate agents, former business partners and governmental officials during his more than five years in Tonga. While I appreciate his honesty and warnings, the allegations and naming-of-names takes something away from the narrative and should be softened considerably.

Due to the typos and axe-grinding, I am tempted to rate it just three stars. But, if you overlook these faults (which may be corrected in a later edition), Tonga: Expatriate Relocation Guide rates a solid four-star review.

I recommend it for anyone who has Tonga on his or her radar for resettlement.

i cant begin to express how intrigued i was with this forthright funny self help type of book!! I say 'self help' because although i myself am straight, i shared this book with many gay friends that felt relief and satisfaction by watching someone go through similar issues and pains that Josh went through. feeling so alone in particular that many years ago when the lifestyle was less accepted and unfortunately still is in many parts of the country). it is never easy to come clean about such sensitive and often embarrassing situations that Josh so freely did with out hesitation and with humor and dignity. i applaud his attention to detail ( his memory blows my mind) and wished the book never ended! i laughed and wanted to cry at times for his pain. i am glad he told his story so my friends had a chance to settle some of their own confusion in their minds about their sexuality and dispel some of their own fears..
Congratulations Josh on a job well done.. Hurry with your next book!!!

Engaging and poignant memoir!!

I loved this memoir! I stumbled upon it after seeing my friends chat about it on Instagram. What could have been a salacious group of stories about sex with famous people, is instead, a lovely and poignant memoir. I really felt for Josh and all that he went through in trying to find himself. I've recommended to several of my friends. I love his writing style and hope this is the first of many books from this author!

After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name.
At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. This was a great adventure!

Knowing that it's a book about a guy with a mission to learn how to dance in Colombia, I didn't know what to expect from it. Will it be purely about dance? Or about traveling? I got both and much, much more. It's a cool guide to Colombia, even cooler guide to Colombian dances and most of all - it's a great story about pushing one's limits, struggling to reach a goal and a transformation of a person. It's written with humour, so the read was smooth and enjoyable.

I highly recommend it! :-)

Less could mean more

Buried under maybe 20,000 excess words is a five-star book struggling to come out.
The basic premise is interesting (especially for a reviewer who has just started ballroom and Latin classes, and is itching to lug her backpack around Latin America one day); the information is there - about the dancing, the food, the history etc, and the writing is articulate and evocative (and, if I remember rightly, typo free - considering I've spotted typos even in 'serious ' books by supposedly reputable university presses, that's hugely impressive).
However, as a previous reviewer said, it is a bit repetitive. Repetition may be good when it comes to learning a dance, but it's not the best way of keeping a reader's attention - as that previous reviewer illustrated. Their beef was that we had the same story repeated over and over again - author arrives in a city, starts to learn a dance, struggles to learn said dance then achieves some degree of competence. Me, I got really frustrated by the way the author would make some witty observation then repeat it but said in a different way, in the very next sentence, just in case we had missed it the first time. Those, to me anyway, were the words that could have gone, making the book move faster (and, thinking about the bottom line, cheaper to print). If those words had to be kept, maybe they could have been employed to say more about the dances themselves, perhaps, or about the place of dancing in Colombia? Yes, dancing is very popular, but, for example, exactly how common are the folk dances - are they taught in every school, or are they a minority pastime, as Morris dancing is in the UK?
I'm in no way dissing this book. I enjoyed reading it, I learned from it, I was inspired by it, I'm glad it was published. I would certainly class it as 'better' than some of the massively-hyped ones published by mainstream publishing houses. But it could have been even better.
